Thanks Epic, it is curently unnoticeable in normal use so I will keep an eye on it. My IB XPS12 had 2 new screens and this is the 1st replacement on my Haswell one so we'll see how it goes...

Question about warranties.
I just got the panels (and main boards due to the annoying high pitched sound when charging) replaced on my Haswell XPS12's. My warranty runs out in the next few days. I presume if the IR problem still persists I can make a claim against the new panel, right? -
Another question... the mini display port.
I just bought an adaptor: mini display port to HDMI. However it doesn't work at all. Now I started reading around and it turns out not all display ports are created equal. In this case if the display port is not Display Port ++, you need to use an "active" adaptor apparently. Does anyone know if the XPS 12 (Haswell) has an active or passive display port? I presume the adaptor I have is passive, or it's just duff...
Cheers. -
This miniDP-HDMI adaptor worked for me on the XPS 12 (Ivy Bridge)...
-
Looks about the same as mine, which I'm pretty sure is passive (the active one's seem to be a bit chunkier).
Wonder why mine's not working then. Could it be a driver problem?!? -

I'm running the Haswell i7 model of the xps12 and have been having random blue screens and slowdowns after the computer has been on for a while. I understand this is related to the touchpad driver memory leak? I haven't read through this thread in a long time so I apologize, does anyone know a quick solution to this issue, or what the proper current drivers I should have on it are?
-
Just update to the latest drivers on the dell website
-
Just had the panel replaced in my i7-4510U Haswell XPS12 and now have zero image retention. Didn't get a close look at the panels myself while the tech was swapping it but he did say the stickers matched and both were LG panels. I'll try to remember to report back in a couple weeks if everything is still good.
Now if I could just get a 5th gen i7, much better sRGB coverage, and an SD card slot in this form factor it'd be about perfect. It's a shame this spinning screen setup didn't continue on long because it's really nice.

Just an FYI, so far Windows 10 Home (the free upgrade) is working great. I've had a touch of wonkyness with the screen rotation, but have been able to recover with a couple of screen flips and contortions. Nothing worse than the normal Windows 8.1, and everything else just seems to work better. Haven't really put it through its paces yet, but the upgrade was flawless, and the display scaling seems to work A LITTLE better. Still not perfect, but Chrome looks much less fuzzy, so that's a huge bonus.
Zero regrets. Going to totally wipe it in a few days, think I'm going to get a 512Gb EVO 850 SSD... -
Ummm, dang! Fresh Windows 10 on the Evo 850 500Gb SSD flies, and is fantastically fantastic. That is all.
Dell released some drivers for Win 10, including a new touchpad driver. Haven't used it enough to know, but I always had problems with the touchpad scrolling stopping working after going to sleep. Sure hope that is fixed. if so, this thing will be perfect now... -
I was also having a problem with auto-rotation -- it stopped working after the laptop woke from sleep. I spent a while in the device manager sleeping and waking the laptop, and I figured it out. If your laptop isn't auto-rotating after sleep, check out Sensors > HID Sensor Collection V2. If you see the status "Failed to update device properties on reconnect," then you can solve that by going to Human Interface Devices > I2C HID Device and unchecking "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" for both I2C devices (disabling it for one or the other sometimes works, sometimes doesn't). For whatever reason, this device isn't waking properly from sleep and it's preventing some sensors from coming back online. Keeping the device from sleeping solves the problem.
Also, I've discovered (while testing the above) that when my laptop sleeps, the power button doesn't wake it any more. Only closing then opening the lid will do it. Anyone know how to fix that?
But, in general, W10 is a pretty solid upgrade. Continuum works great.
*edit* Oh, and a question -- was the W10 fresh install easy? Was it necessary to install any drivers separately, or did Windows Update put everything into place on its own? If it's just creating a usb and running it, and no after-install driver work, I'll probably do it myself.Last edited: Aug 7, 2015 -
Hi all,
First time poster. I have owned the dell xps 12 for just about 12 years (mid 2013 model) and went through the screen replacement for ghosting under warranty.
On balance I have enjoyed the laptop, but it has been plagued with wireless issues, both and home and work. Limited connectivity, being booted repeatedly, saying it is 'connected' on the wireless page while hovering over the toolbar items says 'identifying connection.' Most recently, if I manage to connect at home I get kicked off of about every 2 page views.
I have used all the dell tools, upgraded drivers (both from dell and directly from intel), tried managing the power and connectivity settings, had the IT guy at work look over it and still nothing. The odd thing is that on some connections it seems to be fine - but the two that I use it on the most give me persistent problems.
I am trying to go through the windows 10 upgrade (obvious challenge given an inability to connect consistently).
Does anyone have any additional suggestions before I just go buy a new laptop?
Thanks in advance. -
The W10 upgrade doesn't actually require an internet connection. So, once you've got the files downloaded, don't worry about it. Updates will download slowly on a terrible connection, but that'd happen on W8.1 as well.
I used to have wi-fi issues where it would drop randomly, but I found that just toggling "airplane mode" quickly would reset the connection. Newer drivers eventually fixed the problem, though. -
-
Regardless of what I said above, this computer with Windows 10 is better than with Windows 8.1, no question.....
-
- Restore to 100% factory settings
- Still have issue?
- If YES, likely WiFi card or antennas (connections or hardware itself)
- If NO, you just fixed the problem, upgrade to Win 10 from there (won't be able to until doing all patches)
The antennas would likely not be the easiest to fix. But like Epic said, the WiFi card is cheap and easy..... -
-
My Windows 10 experience, awesome. I upgraded. From what I've read, unlike previous versions of windows, more people are havig problems when they do a clean install compared to just upgrading.
I upgraded all the drivers from dell except graphics (it said I already had a newer version).
I had to go back to the older version of the touchpad driver because the gestures were changed. I like being able to swipe left and right with 3 fingers to go back and forward in the browser and 4 fingers to switch tabs. The newer version doesn't support that.Last edited: Aug 24, 2015 -
Well, I did a clean install of W10, and everything went reasonably smoothly. However, I have two problems:
1) My continuum died. After upgrade, I could set it to automatically switch and it did it flawlessly. Now, the automatic detection is gone, even though the keyboard is still disabled in tablet mode. *edit* Fixed! (below)
2) My touchpad gestures keep reverting to three-up activates Cortana and three-down brings up settings. I had that problem before as well, but I'd hoped the clean install would fix it. Driver problem, I guess.
*edit* For anyone with the same problem, "Intel Virtual Buttons" is the driver that enables automatic switching. You'll only see the unknown device for it in the device manager if you view hidden devices. Dell has the driver on their XPS 12 W8.1 page.Last edited: Sep 3, 2015 -
I'm having this annoying issue with my 2 year old XPS 12, where the screen will dim the brightness even though the power plan is set to plugged in/always on. Randomly it will shift back to full brightness, I think there's some adaptive brightness stuff going on with a bugged sensor.
Anyone got a solution to this problem? Windows 8.1. -
Have you turned off "adaptive brightness" in your specific power plan and "display power-saving technology" in Intel Graphics Properties? The former is based on ambient light in the room, the latter is based on the brightness of screen content. Although, I don't think either is supposed to activate when you're plugged in.

And I'm replying twice in a row, I know, but...
Dell's Skylake XPS 12 has leaked, and it's a freaking Surface clone:
http://www.neowin.net/news/dells-leaked-windows-10-hybrid-mimics-surface-design
Wow, that was the last thing I wanted. I love the easel-hinge design, and was all set to fork over the cash to buy a thinner and lighter one with longer battery life. If I wanted a tablet with a docking keyboard, I'd already have one. I suppose there's a chance we'll get the original XPS 12 design in a different model (an "XPS 13 Flip" or something), but it seems more likely that Dell's just abandoned the design for something trendier. Meh. I use my laptop in my lap probably 90% of the time -- the goofy little tablet stand on Surface-ish designs is terrible for that.
(Sorry, I just felt like ranting and this is really the only place to do it.) -
Next question; anyone know of an adapter that will enable me to use multiple external monitors? I currently have an active adapter with both HDMI, DVI and DP, but windows won't recognize more than 1 display connected to it. -
Hey Guys,
I've got an intermittent issue where the laptop screen seems to freeze when I connect the AC adaptor (I say that the screen freezes as if I open the task manager for example then it is open when I remove the AC adaptor).
The laptop screen unfreezes again when I disconnect the AC adaptor.
I think that this is a graphics driver issue but I was wondering whether anyone else has experienced this issue and if so whether they know of a way to fix it?
This is on Windows 10 btw. -

Only just done the upgrade to Windows 10 and I'm impressed overall. One big negative though, battery life. Any one else notice it's taken a noticeable dip in Windows 10? I reckon I'm lucky to get 4 hours on my Haswell XPS12, under Windows 8.1 I was probably getting between 6-7 hours.
Also, I will do a complete new install of the OS this weekend. What is the recommended partition size for Windows 10? 50GB enough? -
I have the Haswell i7 xps 12, it succumbed to water a few months ago. I opened it up today and was surprised to see zero corrosion or deposits on the motherboard, let alone anywhere inside the laptop other than on the back cover. When I turn the power on, the keyboard lights turn on and the cooling fan spins for a few seconds before stopping (I can't remember if that's normal, if it stays off until it gets a load). The screen is black.
I'm not sure how I can go about diagnosing what the problem is without replacing parts I potentially don't need replaced. I tried hooking up an external display previously, but I'm not sure if the reason it didn't work was because I had the wrong adapter (passive), not using the function key to toggle different monitor configurations, or if the motherboard is actually fried.
Does anyone have any idea where I could start? I am going to reassemble everything and try an active adapter and see if anything comes of that.
Thanks -
Passive adaptor definitely won't work IMO, I had to buy an active one (which wasn't that much more in the end) and then it worked as expected.
-
Does anyone know where I can source a new battery for my Haswell XPS12? I would rather buy something official from Dell rather than risk it on ebay...
-
Has anybody made WiDi work on Windows 10?
It worked for me on Windows 8.1 but can't get it to work on Windows 10. Sometimes it says "something went wrong", other times it connects but the TV screen stays blank and notification pops up on TV saying "The video data is not supported".
Tried with Dell and Intel drivers. -
my Dell Laptop is 24 months old

In my case I updated to 10 with windows update. Then I select "resetting without conserving datas" in advanced start
Is that a clean install ? -

I just spoke to dell and they're going to replace my screen because of the screen retention issue. I hope the new panel doesn't have the screen retention issue.

Got mine replaced in May/June last year. No retention whatsoever on these - and I went through 3 panels on my old XPS12. So you should be fine. They also managed to fix an annoying high pitched sound when charging the laptop. Neither of these problems should have been there in the first place on a premium product, but I can't fault Dells service, they have been superb in my experience.

I'm looking at replacing the battery on my Haswell XPS12.
Anyone know where to get a decent, preferably genuine replacement?
This model has a 50whr battery (model #PKH18) right?
Thanks.Last edited: Jun 7, 2016 -

Has anyone seen this with their XPS 12 screens?
There appears to be dust under the glass. It shows up on light backgrounds
Or if taking a flashlight to the side:
The top outside layer of the glass is clean. This is underneath.
Computer was indoors only and connected to an external monitor with the laptop closed and covered with a cloth.
Could dust have gotten between the glass? Can it be removed and cleaned? Or is this some defect?
Thanks. -
Any opinions on the new skylake kaby lake models that are fanless?
