Does anyone know if it's possible to enable 3 finger tap for middle click?

Yes. Use an Apple mini displayport to dual-link dvi adapter. (Or monoprice makes one too)

I got a 3 finger click to work for the middle-click. I did the same command for a tap, but it doesn't seem to work for me. I went into the regedit.exe and changed both 3FClickAction and 3FingerPressButtonAction to a hexadecimal value of 4. Then restarted the computer. I hope this helps.

Someone also asked about my power connector, it fits just fine, not loose at all.

Does anyone else have really nasty backlight bleed? I called Dell and apparently they're "aware of the problem, but there's nothing [they] can do"

Yes so part of the backlight bleed issue. Dell reps told me that there's a new batch coming out around late June that will fix both the coil whine and backlight bleeding.

I must have a really good screen, because there is no noticeable back light bleed for me. The coil whine is present for me, and it doesn't really bother me. It's as loud as my old laptop's hard drive when accessing files. Plus there are always other noises in my office. Turning off the keyboard back light does suppress the noise.

Anyone have the 4010u model? How is battery life with a non turbo boosting cpu and no tocuchscreen? Plan to run Linux so didn't need any of that. Wonder if the whine noise is present on non touch screen.

I'm in for one for my wife (i7-4650/HD5000/256SSD for $900 from the outlet after coupon). I have an XPS 15 top tier I also bought from the outlet (w/o coil whine) so I'm pretty stoked about the XPS line

If you report your coil whine issue, is it possible to negotiate with Dell then to get a new system exchange when the hopefully coil whine free system comes out?

They will replace parts and if that doesn't fix the issue they may agree to an exchange but it will most likely be a refurbished one.

They will replace the faulty parts, but if those parts are replaced enough times and you complain enough, they will certainly replace the whole unit. I've done this several times (IT guy at work). There are no guarantees though, and it depends on who you get in support. There have also been cases of being upgraded to a different model if it is believed the problem is un-fixable... Many XPS 12 users have been given XPS 13 replacement items due to the XPS 12 screen Image Retention burn in issues.

I just received my system exchange (from a dead pixel issue a month ago--it took a while because having bought from Microsoft store my computers purchase date was already 21 days past when I personally acquired the computer). Comparing the two machines, the coil whine sounds very similar between the two in sound and volume. Both also have backlight bleed in similar quantity but different pattern (as if about 50% of the backlight LEDs along the bottom of the screen and lower sides cause bleed). The bleed is only discernible on a pure black screen and even dark video and backgrounds are displayed without bleed.

Also this came up earlier in this thread but wasn't answered, the top 5-10 rows of pixels on my screens appear to be darker than the rest of the screen (especially on bright blue screens like the setting loading screen with the gear icon). Does anyone else see this?

Hi I received mine today and it won't turn on. When I press the power button, the keyboard lights up but then it shuts down. I let it charge for 3 hours and still the same response . Does anyone know what I could do please ?

    Thank you :)

Do all xps 13s have the coil whine issue or is it luck of the draw? Thinking about trading in my xps 12 which has very common image retention issues but don't want to be trading one problem for another :(

I don't have the constant whine on mine.. I did hear it for a few seconds one time though and it wasn't too loud. Moving the mouse pointer seemed to affect it.

Just got my 9333 I7 win 7 from the outlet store, same old whine that everyone else has reported, greatly reduced by turning off the keyboard backlight, except in bed, in the dark, in the quiet is exactly when you want the backlight on, AND the thing to be quiet.

That isnt my main issue though, completely random "No Audio Output Device is installed" is my main issue! I can reboot and have sound working fine, reboot again and have zero sound and no sound devices listed what so ever. Reboot again and I may or may not have sound, completely random. Have tried installing, uninstalling drivers, nothing makes any difference to how random it is. I suspect hardware fault, there is nothing more I can try short of a factory reset/windows 7 reinstall and the F12 menu doesnt seem to give me any options to do anything like that so I am not sure how I am meant to do it (nor do I know the serial number for my copy of windows 7 which came installed on the laptop). Seems to work fine aside from the whine and the completely random sound, well done Dell, good quality, good service!

Of course once Dell support get around to replying to my email about the sound issue, if it should turn out to be a hardware fault and need replacing, I then have to have it replaced twice, once for the sound and then again when they get off their arses and fix the whining issue. So I might as well not even bother spending hours installing any of my software on it (like I already have installing 100+ windows updates on it) if its going to get wiped off TWICE in the next couple of months.

Like many,I've got a little coil whine on my XPS 13. But I don't really have many complaints. I got the best specs I could on the dell outlet - Core i7 4500U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Windows 8.1 Pro. And I paid £840. There are a few machines with the Intel 4650U on them but they are rare and are usually pre-installed with Ubuntu.
Anyway I've looked at all the alternatives, Fujitsu Lifebook U904, Asus Zenbook UA301LA, Sony Vaio Pro 13, Lenovo Thinkpad T440s, Carbon X1, X240, Toshiba Kirabook and they are all way way more money. I think Dell are doing a great job with the XPS laptops,Venue tablets and Precision workstations. And the latitudes are decent.

    Anyone with Core i7 4500U. In the control panel/system it reports Intel Core i7 4500U @ 1.80Ghz 2.40Ghz.
Surely it should report 1.80Ghz and then 3.0Ghz?

Go to start -> run and type in dxdiag then enter. If it asks you a question click "no"
See what it CPU information is displayed. (It's most likely the same)

    Yeah did that. It says Intel Core i7 4500U CPU @ 1.8Ghz (4 CPU's) , 2.4Ghz.
Can anyone in the system of control panel tell me what its says about their CPU?

Some get coil whine and some don't. My 9333 turned up last week and had it. Yesterday Dell replaced the motherboard and this one doesn't seem to have it.

It means that windows is terrible at telling what your processor speed it - it gets it wrong on many computers.

Download CPU-Z here and see what that says, if you want to see full speed you'll need to run something demanding.

I just got my i5 9333, and I'm loving it! I got it for 1000 on the Microsoft store, and also got the Microsoft Complete Warranty, although I'm hoping I don't have to use it :p. I don't seem to have any screen bleeding, and I can't really hear much coil whine either, although it could just be me. I turned off the display scaling, and I've got to say: this screen is incredible. I do have a couple of things though. Anyone know of a good case for this laptop? I put in my backpack with other things, and I don't want it to get too damaged, so even a sleeve should be fine.

I also want to replace the SSD, but since I haven't played around too much with laptops, I just wanted to ask some questions. First, what is the maximum capacity SSD that the motherboard can support? I like to have extra space, since I fill it up quite quiickly (I've only got 20GB left already!). In terms of the install, I've heard that it isn't too bad as the SSD is towards the top. I just wanted to check what screwdriver I'll need? Also, I'd be looking to clone the drive and all it's partitions to maintain things like Rapid Start, but I read that some people were having some issues with cloning all partitions. Anyone got any tips for this?

I just received my second system exchange and the new one has pretty crazy backlight bleed. Stats are as follows:

First had 4 dead pixels, second has dim too edge (5mm) of screen and very dim top left corner, third has giant region of backlight bleed and two dark corners.

All three have the same coil whine.

First two have mild backlight bleed.

With regards to SSD Capacity, any capacity SSD will work (as far as GB are concerned), you just need to get the right size. The XPS 13 uses mSATA SSD's which, unlike M.2, are all the same length AFAIK. I'm pretty sure you need a T6 torx to open the bottom as mentioned earlier in the thread.

I got the digitrade 13.3" sleeve off amazon. The xps 13 is a unique shape, it's as wide as a 13.3 but very shallow so it's snug in the case one way and has an extra inch the other way. The neoprene stops it from sliding around inside though.
