I'm having a problem that when I close the laptop lid, leave it for say an hour and open it up it won't come out of sleep. I have to press the power button and that just restarts it? Is there some way to bring it out of sleep? This is all while the laptop is not plugged in so running on battery.
EDIT: Nevermind, updated to the latest bios and seems to be working correctly now

Hello everyone, this is my first message in this forum.
I just bought my new Dell XPS 13 a month ago, and already have a really annoying problem.
Every time I use the laptop on battery it becomes annoyingly slow, I mean typing lag, browsing folders delay and such.
I tried EVERYTHING, changed settings, formatted the ssd, changed motherboard, later on changed the ssd but nothing helps.
Dell wouldn't replace the laptop because I bought it in USA and I live in Israel.
Someone else have this problem? and maybe fixed it...
thanks -
I am sorry you're having slowness issues. I would keep contacting Dell support and I know it can be tedious and frustrating. What is your system configuration?

wondows 8.1
i7 4500u
8 GB ram
256 GB SSD
I just uninstalled the intel graphics driver and the laptop became fast again.
but when i reinstall the driver the problem returns. (tried 2 different versions).

both made problems.
I tried to find an older version, but with no success. -
Hi guys, bought my XPS 13 i5/8g/128g a week ago, pretty happy with it since i got a good deal.
just one problem though, when i'm trying to move the cursor using the touch pad just a little to any direction, say to the right, at a quick speed for a short distance(more like a flick of finger on the touchpad), the cursor itself would move but snaps back to its previous place as soon as i lifted my finger.
has this happened to anyone? do you know if updating the synaptics driver could solve this problem? it's pretty annoying sometimes. -
-
Mine arrived this morning, as soon as I booted it up two dead pixels and the high pitched whine stood out like a sore thumb - not impressed :/
-
I've had mine for a few weeks. Perfect screen, case and input devices. I can hear some coil whine but only if the backlight is on and if my ear is less than a foot from the keyboard. Not worth a mobo swap for me.
Some tips for new buyers:
My touchpad wasn't so great until I installed a different driver from dell's site. Under 'Dell Touchpad Driver' click on 'Other file formats' and get the Input_Driver_Synaptics_A01... file. Not sure what it did but the pad is really nice now.
If you use firefox you will notice that 2 finger scrolling is laggy and jerky. No way to fix that so use IE or just install Chrome Beta. Chrome still has an issue with display scaling so to fix that right click the Chrome icon go to Properties > Compatibility and check 'Disable display scaling'. Now start Chrome go to settings and set page zoom to 150%. -
Is it normal that the laptop rocks backwards when you touch the screen when it's on a desk? Seems it's very heavily back weighted, so the slightest touch on the touchscreen and it rocks back.

Hey, I noticed that the processors in the XPS 13 seem to have been refreshed on the Microsoft store. They now have 4210U and 4510U processors. Since I recently had to return my old one because of the awful coil whine, I was wondering if anyone knew if these were fixed in the new versions. I loved the laptop, but the coil whine nearly drove me insane.

I've been looking at this laptop pretty closely but holding off on buying because of the coil whine. I look forward to hearing from anyone to think if the problem has been resolved.

Dell support have now said there are new models of the xps 13 9333 out which supposedly "fix the issues reported" with the older model (after numerous people have said that Dell support claimed there "is no fault" with the existing systems!!!). However I have no idea how to identify these new models, it is possible that the new cpu's indicate these new models. So far I have only seen one person claiming to have one of the new models and he said the coil whine issue was definitely still there on his, so Dell have apparently 1: lied about it being fixed in the new models and 2: yet again failed to fix it after 8 months. He did say that the rubber surface was no longer completely flat, it has some sort of texture to it, so this may be a way to identify the new models.
Personally I wouldnt touch Dell with a barge pole ever again because in the same email that they confirmed this to me, they also said that I would have to pay £312 for the privilege of sending this faulty crap back and having a new model which supposedly fixes the issues (the "new models" being exactly the same spec as the old ones so I would be paying £312 for effectively the SAME laptop). So I have had a faulty laptop for 3 months, spent hours on the phone to them, wasted a day off work, and they now want me to pay £312 for the working laptop I should have had from day 1. bye bye Dell, I'll take the refund. -
Hello all,
I have been following this thread for quite a while because I have been looking to buy this laptop. After searching around, I found that the microsoft store is selling them for a lot less than all of the other retailers. The i5-4210U with 8GB RAM 128 SSD is selling at $999 and I can get 10% off for the student deal. Do you think I should pull the trigger on this one? -
Yes, you should do it! I've ordered several of these for work clients and that price with those specs is better than you'll ever get from Dell. Also with the recent updated model, you should be good to go!

Anyone here own the i3 Haswell model? Seeing it recently on a few refurb deals and don't necessarily need the power of i5+. I'm just curious if it gets similar or better battery life?

I just bought the new XPS 13 with the 4210U CPU and the coil whine is still there. Can only hear it in a silent room but I'll be using it in a silent room most of the time.
-
Is this normal? My cpu doesn't appear to want to go above 70% usage on intel burn test.
Another image.
I'm using high performance mode while being plugged in.
dell power saver is off and now I'm using throttlestopdan76 likes this. -
Hi all
just got my new XPS13. It is the 4650 version. Must have just missed out on the updated ones. But no coil whine or backlight bleed
Been playing around with the power settings. If i choose power saver and then in advanced settings set the computer to hibernate, the setting does not stick. when i open the advanced settings again it is back to 'never'. Anyone know how to get around this? clicking "change settings that are currently unavailable" doesnt make any difference.
Hibernate does work. i set the power button action to be hibernate and it hibernates fine. Just cant get it to work as part of the power saver profile.
thanks

Chris9446 - You would think that all those smart people over at Microsoft could figure out how to calculate CPU Utilization percentage but I guess the Windows 8 team is a little mathematically challenged. On my mobile CPU it is the exact opposite. It over reports the CPU utilization percentage. Next time you are testing, click on the Task Manager - Details tab. For me, the Details tab is correct and what is being displayed by the graph is wrong.
I will post a couple of screen shots in a minute that clearly show this problem.
ThrottleStop shows your CPU utilization just a hair under 100%. In your screenshot your CPU is throttling because it has reached the TDP power limit. The speed of the CPU is being reduced to keep power consumption in check. ThrottleStop uses high performance timers within the CPU and measures utilization directly so you can trust what it is telling you. It also accurately reports your CPU multiplier when it is being rapidly throttled. An i5-4210U is a low power CPU with a long term 15W TDP rating and that is exactly what ThrottleStop is reporting while it is being throttled. Short term it can go a little higher than 15W.
Edit - Here's a good example. This CPU has hyper-threading so it can process 8 threads simultaneously. The ThrottleStop C0% represents the percentage of time that the CPU is in the C0 state where it is actively working. At idle, this CPU spends about 0.5% of the time in C0. In this screenshot, I am running 4 threads of the TS Bench test so that is going to keep the CPU active 50% of the time and add on another 0.5% for when the CPU is working on Windows background processing. ThrottleStop reports 50.5% utilization.

Have a look at the graph in Windows 8. The TS Bench is a nice steady load so it draws a very flat graph. Great, except that it is reporting 71% utilization. That is completely wrong so I would not lose any sleep over the Task Manager CPU % Utilization graph. Maybe for Windows 9 they will hire some people that went to school long enough so they learned how to calculate a percentage. -
Looks like the Microsoft Store web site just started selling the XPS 13-7144sLV. Does anyone know if this is supposed to have the coil whine fix?
Dell XPS 13-7144sLV Touchscreen Ultrabook, Intel Core i7 - Microsoft Store -
I to would like to know also on Dell XPS 13-7144sLV if there's any coil whine.
From my understanding the coil whine is only when the keyboard back-light is on correct? So if I where to turn it off, it shouldn't whine right? -
there is the coil wine problem in the Microsoft store modal?
dell xps 13 4289
and why i can find it on other stores like best buy or b&h?? -

B&H now carries the 7144 version.

I just found out about that leak from a few months ago regarding a Broadwell XPS13. Late I know. Is/was there any truth to that and has any news about such a refresh come to light since, or is it likely to be another one of those products that Dell keeps under wraps until just before release again?

any updates on the buzzing noise from someone who recently purchased?
I was about to purchase until I found this forum. -
Something very strange happened to me.
My laptop also made that niose when the backlit keyboard was on, but suddenly the noise is gone, now it comes back when the backlit keyboard is off but when its on - silent.
Dont know the reason. -
Hi guys is there the coil whine with the newer XPS 13?
I have the XPS 14 but still find it too heavy to cart around I love the notebook but need something a little lighter and I wanted to wait until the XPS 13 had a better screen.
For the most part are you guys happy with your XPS 13? -
I'm reasonably happy with mine.
-
Hi guys, I've just got a question about scratching and build quality - specially inside notebook. Does it scratch easily how I heard and read in thread with Dell M3800? Thanks for reply
-
I got mine on Friday from a local auction site. It arrived with a pirate copy of Windows 7 on it.
I complained to the seller and he has agreed to purchase a licensed copy of Win 8 for it. I was wondering if it was possible to get the original factory image from Dell? Will save a lot of time doing drivers etc... -
Dell would have to come out and do it as they do not include an os disk. See how much a service contract would cost as that would be the only way they would do it.
-
-
They gave it to me when I had issues with my XPS 12 a while back. Worked great on the XPS 13 as well as my XPS 15.
Thanks for the responses -
Glad it worked.
-
For those of you with the 128gb ssd option, how much usable space did you have when you first got your computer brand new?
-
I think I had around 60GB left.
-
Did anyone upgrade their SSD drive after they received their notebook to a 512 gb or a 1 TB SSD? If so was it easy to replace?
-
My XPS 13 says "Dell" in the center of the LCD screen instead of "XPS" - which I've seen on pictures. Is that right?
-
Im having an issue with my new xps 13 not staying in sleep mode, Ill hit the power button or close rthe lid and verify it goes into sleep mode, but after coming home from work, the laptop has shut down and is at 10% battery. Has anyone seen this issue??
thanks -
Any word on the new motherboards? Is the coil whine still present? Do the Microsoft stores have the new shipments?
-
Yes, it is fairly easy to replace the mSATA SSD.
The difficult part is finding the right screw driver to do it.
But after you open the carbon fiber back cover, it is like 3 minutes job to replace mSATA SSD and wireless card.
-
Yes, it is right.
Rumor has it that this change comes from Michael Dell. He wants to show his family name whenever possible.
