Well looking under HID compliant Touch Screen in device manager (under Human Interface Devices), I see that the driver is a stock Microsoft one from 2006. I have a feeling that the touch screen keeps going out b/c Dell failed to provide us with a new/updated driver for the touch screen in these computers and we're using the basic Microsoft one.

Yeah that issue definitely does sound driver based. Sounds like when the pc shut the screen off, it shut off the touch screen, and then was unable to wake the screen. More in line with a power/sleep setting.

I agree. I'm willing to bet the OS is putting the touch screen into a low power state that it doesn't support.
Does anyone know the actual manufacturer of the touch screen?

It's not just happening when the screen goes off or computer goes to sleep. It will happen to me randomly during normal use and won't come back until I restart.

I'm also having another weird issue that I just noticed. When I move the monitor lid from the top up and down, it looks like there is pressure on the screen on the bottom right. My fingers are nowhere near when I see the pressure but it looks similar on the screen as it does when you put pressure on the lid from the exterior. Getting close to exchanging this thing.

That's been reported by a few people already.
I'd recommend you call dell and get it replaced.

Several people have this. Mine does it as well. I also have several stuck pixels on my screen. I'm going to wait until these have been out for a while longer before getting the screen replaced.

Sounds like this model needed to mature a little bit longer in the incubator before being released into the world !
I'm glad I decided to wait for the reviews to start coming in from you folks.
If I had received a model with so many quirks and defects I'd be livid after spending so much money. You'd expect to get a product that has surpassed the quality control benchmarks for the price.
I'm not sure if Dell Canada includes "in home" repair as standard in the price. I see that some of you are having good experiences with Dell coming out to replace your screens, etc.

I don't know.....clusters of stuck pixels, touch screen being unresponsive, touch screen doing wonky things in the bottom right of the display, wireless and touchpad driver issues, high-pitched sounds, etc - geez !

A big thanks to all of you early-adopters, though - as your pain and trouble trying to fix these things will push Dell to address these issues - hopefully soon, so I can eventually own one.

why even fuss with Dell System Detect? Download the drivers manually and the OS will tell you if it is the same as what you already have

Can you revert back to factory install?

That seems like a software problem to me. Do all the Windows Updates and NOT Dell ones for a while. I trust MS in software more than I do Dell. I didn't even touch any Dell updates until I had mine for at least a week.

I dunno, lots of all-new products have teething issues. Even Apple products at launch have seen GPU lockups, erratic thermal control and behavior, display issues, odd noises, etc, and they've been fixed by driver/firmware updates and, when necessary, hardware replacement. I expect the same will prove true here. Thus far on this model we've seen Wifi issues (solved with a driver update, at least for the vast majority of people), a couple panels with dead pixels (to be expected for a brand-new panel model with this kind of pixel density, and apparently being addressed promptly by Dell), and intermittent touchscreen dropouts likely caused by an outdated Microsoft driver. And then there are SOME reports of a high-pitched noise that has apparently been heard on other PCs and seems to vary in volume here from unit to unit, though some are perfectly fine. That sounds somewhat par for the course when you're an early adopter of a product that's got so many new features all crammed into the same package, and none of this sounds like a dealbreaker to me. There's no other PC that offers the same feature set of the new XPS 15 in the same package, so I'm not worried about getting mine because there's no other machine that offers what this one does. There will be driver updates, firmware updates, and BIOS updates to smooth things out in the coming weeks and months, and of course Dell offers long warranties with good support and prompt service -- at least that's been my experience.

Also keep in mind that forums like these are always biased toward hearing complaints. Far fewer people check in to say everything is awesome than to say "I'm having this weird issue...."

To those who orderd @ Costco, I checked with their Customer Service. Looks like the ship date runs about the same as the Dell site shows, they gave me a preliminary of 12/5 for delivered date, hopefully Dell can bump that up a few days. I ordered 3 days ago.

Mine was originally supposed to ship on the 13th. It shipped last Tuesday. Unfortunately I was out of town when it arrived so I didn't get to mess with it until Sunday.
So you might get things about a week early.

Yup mine has this problem. It did not arrive like it, but seemed to develop after id used for a few hours. I phoned Dell and they asked me to send photos (hard when it occurs when moving!) but they were extremely nice and I have a new laptop being built for me now. Supposedly. Its a shame because everything else about this laptop is near perfect to me.

While I normally believe that there's a vocal minority, I've had my computer for 3 days and already had the following issues:

    1. Windows update was completely broken and wouldn't download or update any apps. Finally fixed this by doing a system restore.
    2. Touch screen intermittently stops working until reboot.
    3. Sound from USB port when computer is plugged in.
    4. Screen pressure on the bottom right of the screen when opening or closing the computer.

If I had one of two of these issues I'd probably just suck it up and live with it. Having all four means I'll be exchanging it.

It seems that I'm wrong when I have said that PM841 is the equivalent of 840 Pro, in fact here:
Samsung PM841 512GB mSATA SSD Review - Performance and Capacity in a Client SSD | The SSD Review
Performance is listed at 540MB/s read and 330MB/s write with up to 95,000 IOPS, so it's not a twin of 840PRO (write performance are much lower than 840PRO)
On Samsung Semiconductor site there is no trace of SM841, the only model mSATA with 512GB listed is the PM841.
SSD Product Catalogue | Samsung Semiconductor Global Website
SSD Product Catalogue | Samsung Semiconductor Global Website

I have found some info here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sol...9-true-samsung-sm841-oem-version-840-pro.html
But the only useful info seems that PM841 uses TLC memory.

If I remember correctly someone has posted some test with Crystal Mark about XPS15 with 512GB mSATA (on one of 3 thread about this machine) and write speed was significantly higher than 330MBs, so SM841 seems better than PM841, but it's unclear what technology is used on SM841, MLC or TLC?

So battery life in Bootcamp is pretty much the same as on the XPS 15!
I'm running both Win 8.1 and Win Server 2012R2 on my late 2013 rMBP, and the battery life fluctuates all over the place.
The best I've seen is 5h30m, but when I actually do anything it drops down to 2h:30 or even less!

And yes that's because the 750m is always running - Although I'm booting from EFI (so the Iris Pro graphics are visible to windows) there's no Apple driver to switch between them - apparently Optimus doesn't work on these rMBP due to the implementation.

The biggest issue I'm having is with the touchpad: it doesn't always register clicks in the lower left corner, and often when i click on something, the mouse jumps down teh screen about an inch and then clicks what's there! Happens under OSX as well, and I have the latest EFI firmware loaded.
Tempted to go unbox my XPS 15 now and compare...

So XPS 15 owner, you're not alone in having battery/trackpad issues!!

According to Samsung's catalog here ( http://intelatech.com/Samsung_PSG_2013_2H.pdf), the SM841 uses MLC. The write speeds on the PM841 seem to match up pretty well with the 840 Evo.

That sounds like a "ground loop". Exchanging it wont fix that problem.

"Some of the most notorious effects of ground loops are the noise and interference that can become present in audio, video, and radio transmission systems. "

That's impressive.. how did you manage that?

I just did the 1999 Costco + 99 for 3 year ADH warranty. For some reason Costco charged me half price on the tax too.. so was only like 2200 total with warranty and all.

The GPU supports 120 Hz and the DisplayPort connector has to be 1.2 since that spec has been around forever (in fact that's when MiniDP was formalized), so I have to imagine 120 Hz would work up to 2560x1600 (though you wouldn't be able to daisy-chain a second display with that resolution), or you could run dual 1920x1200 @ 120 Hz displays off of that single port, and then the HDMI 1.4a port would have enough bandwidth for a single 1920x1200 @ 120 Hz. But since I have neither the laptop nor a 120 Hz display, I can't be certain.

Someone asked why Dell didn't include a Thunderbolt port on this machine, and I bet the reason is because Thunderbolt only supports DisplayPort 1.1a, which has half the bandwidth and thus can only do a single 2560x1600 display @ 60 Hz, or 4K @ 30 Hz -- and considering that next month Dell will be releasing the Ultrasharp 32 display with a whopping 3840x2400 resolution, which would require DisplayPort 1.2 to drive at 60 Hz, I bet that may have been a factor. ;) Thunderbolt 2 incorporates DisplayPort 1.2, but that spec might not have been ready in time for this system.

$2069 pre-purchase price after talking to the online chat guy for a while. Signed up for Dell Advantage for the 5% reward for purchases. Received laptop and had second thought and called to return it. They offered addition $200 off to keep it though I can still return it if I change my mind during the return window.

That's pretty good. I had it at 2200 and in Production, and then CostCo put it up for 1999 with the cheap warranty. So I decided to order from there(also with all the problems people had, it's a local return). When I called to cancel, they were like that's $205 off, we can't do that.. okay then, cancel my order.

Strange that CostCo could do it with the Dell, but Dell couldn't heh.

If you don't like it, then by all means return it -- but if on the other hand you're merely having issues that are irritating rather than showstopping and that in all likelihood will be corrected via software/firmware, then I say hold out unless you can find a comparable PC somewhere else -- which I certainly can't. And if they're hardware-level problems that will need hardware revisions of certain components, then wait a few months until it's likely that a revision has been developed and produced and then use that warranty to get a replacement. None of the complaints reported here seem like issues that render the machine unusable except maybe Wifi, but that was fixed with a new driver. If my system arrived and had every single one of the issues reported thus far I'd still keep it and count on them getting fixed in the future -- in the meantime I still have a sweet machine. :)

After all, it's not as if this particular Dell model smells of cat urine. ;)

Exactly this.... of all the issues with mine so far seem software/firmware based. I don't have an issues with high pitch noise(so far) or no dead pixel(so far). At first it seems I might have had a wifi issue but testing wifi with different routes, it shows that maybe the new XPS doesn't like my current router(I was going to purchase an AC router anyway). I'm not exactly sure why this is and it's not exactly slow it's just about 5-7Mbps slower than all of my other machines on the home router. On the router at work it seems to be 2-3Mbps faster or even. Only real issue left is that the trackpad is not as good as the one on Apple's machine and I have issues with the touchscreen not working after waking up from sleep. It fixes with reboot so it seems like a software issue. Something I'm not willing to deal with on a $2000 machine but something a few hundred dollars less? Might be livable.... still have some time on my return period to decide.

    That right, you imagine :p

The previous dell modell wasnt able to output 120Hz because the displayport was connected to the Intel HD GPU and THEN routed to the NVIDIA GPU. Thats why I wished that someone would try it out :(

I got my second attack of the no touch screen last night, again writing a blog on wordpress. I had two windows/apps open, the wordpress site, and my WD MyCloud network drive, where I was pulling pics from, adding to a folder, to pull into the blog. I was using the keyboard and a wireless mouse. when I was done, and went to drag both windows down with my finger...the screen laughed at me. so that's the 2nd time in a few days of ownership. but I was going to bed anyway, and didn't care that much. again, I know people are having major issues about the screen. im more subdued about it, but am I wrong to believe that this will be fixed with a firmware update or whatever...or are we all doomed?

Ordered mid-tier on Nov 6, shipped Nov 15 from California. When I ordered the expected delivery was Dec 2.

This forum has been great. I have been saving to Evernote all the post about drivers, where to get them, etc. so that I can tweak as needed.

My belief is that all the USA batteries are 6 cell. Just 2 different sizes. At least that's what Dell's site is showing

Great comparison, it did help me a lot choosing between the two computers, have you got further experience to share since your post?

Got my XPS 15 512 SSD version a few days ago and loving it so far. Only issue I have is the touch enabled going from time to time and yes its definitely a driver/firmware issue. Hopefully will be corrected in the next week or two...annoying but far from a deal breaker for me this thing is f*cking rad! :p

Anyone know if a XPS 13 haswell thread has been started yet? Thinking I'd like to order one for my fiancé for Xmas :)

Edit: Looking for a Canadian discount code if anyone knows of any. One guy previously posted a $150 off code that I used but that code has expired

I ordered 11/2 (a Saturday, so official order date is Monday, 11/4). It was shipped yesterday and Fedex claims it will show up Tuesday.

BTW, I just want to compliment the posters here. Lots of very detailed, useful information. I appreciate the time you are all taking to be so helpful.

It's not country-specific. In the US the Precision shows 9-cell and the XPS shows 6 even though the WHr rating is the same, which suggests that it's yet another typo/inconsistency between the models just like the weight. I notified a colleague in Dell Enterprise Sales about this and some other issues (closest contact I know to the website team), so hopefully it gets fixed.

Support.dell.com has everything, though I'd get the GPU and Wifi drivers from NVIDIA and Intel respectively myself, especially Wifi since that seems to fix dropout and performance degradation issues.

Well, I've tested out everything to clone the OS. Apparently, 64GB msata is not enought to fit the entire OS+recovery in it. Need at least a 120GB.
