If there's a part shortage, until that's alleviated. If there's no part shortage, not long. Also it wouldn't be unusual to actually receive it before being notified that it had shipped.

Any idea when it'll go from Pre-production to in production? Mine's been stuck there for a week :p

Pre-production is when they are getting the parts together. That's why I found it cool to see mine "in production". If it's in production all the parts are in and it's a matter of just putting them together. During my first order back in Dec it was in pre-production for about 2 weeks before they said it would delayed until March at which point I cancelled it. I would've had it by now if I did not cancel but there was no way for me to know this at the time. In the end it worked out since I got a 15% discount with my 2nd order.

I would think it shows "in production" because the parts are already in. During pre-production it states that all the parts are being gathered. I imagine it takes a day or so to put it together? I've never put a laptop together but it takes me about an hour to put together a PC.

Mine was 'in production' for a couple of weeks in December while something was delayed. My assumption is that it's partially assembled, then stored until it can be completed.

I don't know if it was solved in this thread, but for the issue with Chrome's fuzziness (and other apps), has anyone tried going to Control Panel > Display > Adjust Resolution > Make Text and Other Items Larger or Smaller > and toggling "Let me choose one scaling level for all of my displays." (so that the box is checked)?

    That may solve the issue?

That's not necessarily true. I ordered my laptop on December 7th. It was "in production" for about 7 weeks, before I got it on Monday.

And now my bluetooth has completely disappeared. I used to work with my bluetooth mouse. Now I cannot find any bluetooth setting anywhere. It just disappeared from the control panel. My bluetooth device is working properly it says in device manager.
Anyone's got an idea on how to fix this?

Please do not say use the search function because that's completely useless in a thread this long (I tried)

Strangily I solved it by unintstalling my bluetooth device in device manager. Then I ran this driver 9530_Network_Application_8MNTH_WN_3.1.1309.0390_A01 and chose remove. Suddenly my bluetooth started working again

In response to jphughan's reply about the Close Lid option, which I appreciate, I'd like to ask clarifying questions... I have a new XPS 15 on it's way to me and I've also ordered the Dell 3.0 USB docking station. My desired setup, which I have now with an old Latitude and port replicator, is to when I come home, hook up my new XPS to my new USB docking station; power on; and use my external monitor, keyboard, and mouse with the XPS lid closed. My questions are: 1) To connect to the USB docking station, I have to connect via the USB cable and then power on the laptop with the lid open in order to hit the power button, correct? 2) Assuming that is the case, to then close the lid of the laptop such that it looks cleaner on my desk and make use of the external monitor, I need to set the Close Lid option to Do Nothing don't I to keep it from going to sleep/hibernating? 3) And I need to set the output device to the external monitor as instructed, but then the laptop will actually notice when it's docked to this external monitor again and therefore intelligently switch to this setting? And when not connected to the docking station it will make use of the XPS screen?

I appreciate any steps as I'm looking for instructions on how to set up the XPS with the USB docking station such that I can work at home with the XPS lid closed and obviously do the docking and undocking with as much ease as possible. Thanks...

Everything you said is correct. :) The only additional note is that while the laptop will switch the display configuration when you dock and undock, it can't entirely switch SCALING on the fly, so you may have to log off and back on when docking/undocking as well.

It doesn't. The issue isn't with per-display scaling or lack thereof, but with ANY scaling. And disabling per-display scaling isn't really an option for people who want to use the QHD+ panel alongside non-4K external panels, since there's no single scale factor that works reasonably with both at the same time.

Replacement parts aren't guaranteed to be new, but with the QHD+ panel shortage I'd be surprised if it was used. And even if it was, it couldn't have been used for very long. I don't think it could be a repaired unit though since these don't appear to be repairable, so worst case you get a panel from a system that was lightly used, returned, and couldn't be put on the Dell Outlet for whatever reason.

As for the issue you're describing, a picture would be helpful.

jphughan, thanks... I got it... As far as the scaling, this makes sense... Normally, i actually turn off the laptop to undock and then power on after i dock. As such, this should address scaling. The intelligently switching between docked and undocked is what I wasn't expecting. Pretty darn smart...

The only other question is about my setting the Close Lid option to Do Nothing. I'd like to have the ability, when running on battery, to still sleep/hibernate when i close the lid. But in your previous reply, and i've seen this in other replies, it is mentioned to set the Close Lid option to Do Nothing on BOTH battery and plugged in. However, this isn't necessary in my application, correct? If I'm going to be only closing the lid and running the external monitor while docked, then I wouldn't have to set the Close Lid option to Do Nothing when on battery too, correct? Thanks again.

Correct. I set Do Nothing on both because there are several times I want to close the lid to save battery power but want to keep some unattended task running while I'm away, even on battery power. When I actually want my system to sleep/hibernate, I don't consider it very difficult to select that in the Windows UI, so I feel no need to tie that action to the lid. But for what you're describing, your proposed setup is fine.

Regarding scaling in Linux: since the native resolution of this display is so high, I find that there is no noticeable blurriness at other resolutions. It's like the old days of CRT monitors! I've tried running the screen at 1920x1080, and it looks great. I wanted a little more screen real estate so I am now running at 2048x1152, which I find excellent. By selecting the resolution that best corresponds to the font size I can handle, I don't have to worry about any scaling issues.

The 2048x1152 resolution wasn't a default option. I followed the instructions here: Add new screen resolution in Linux Mint - Linux Mint Community to add it. The only difference is that the screen is called eDP1.

Here is a picture of the gap I was talking about. Its annoying because you can easily see it while using the laptop. If I am going to receive a used panel I would be pissed because of the $2400 spent on it. Again the issue appears to be a lack of adhesive where the display meets the aluminum frame. Its within the 21 or 30 day return policy but I want to keep the computer.
-What would the recommendations be of this forum regarding this issue?
-If the panel is replaced would this contribute towards any degradation of the hinge in the future as they seem to be one unit?

    Thanks,
    Jesse

Wow, that's really strange and definitely shouldn't be there. I'd request a replacement if it bugs you, and no I don't think it will degrade the rest of the machine. If you take a look at the Owner's Manual on support.dell.com, you'll see that the entire display is one assembly, including the hinge, so there shouldn't be any worries about that. And as far as the "used" panel, like I said, with the QHD+ panel being as complex as it is and the supply being as low as it is, it's not like you'll get a repaired panel or even one that's been used for very long -- and you may very well get a new panel. That's just not a guarantee.

Or if you've JUST recently gotten the machine, you can try asking for a replacement system, which would be entirely new, though that could take quite a bit longer and obviously be more effort since you'd have to set up your system from scratch again. Dell allows no questions asked system exchanges for issues like this that are reported within a certain time of receiving the system, but I'm not sure what the cutoff time period is for that.

I've just noticed my laptop has a space on the right side of the hinge of about 1.5mm, whereas it has no space on the left side. Also the right side of the screen is about 1mm higher than the left side (only noticeable if you look at the space between the keyboard and the screen).

Other than aerojex, has anyone else seen this? I seem to recall the suggestion given to him was to not call Dell, that they could do more harm than good, and maybe try to fix it yourself could be better.

PS. The coil whine is always there. Whenever I scroll a page, or when the CPU is working (compressing files, etc). It's like a very very noisy hard drive.

PS2. All in all, I really love the laptop. It's amazing.

Hey everyone. Little update on my new XPS 15 (Haswell). I opened up my new laptop and removed the old thermal paste and cleaned the heatsinks very well and then applied some new paste (Gelid Extreme) and put it back together. This shaved off on average 7-10 Celsius on the CPU and GPU. Also, the fans seem to not work as hard and create that loud noise and they don't run as much. I experienced some coil whine recently when doing various tasks on it and doing this made a difference. Wont eliminate it, but definitely a big improvement! Figured I would share this with everyone.

That's surprising. I would expect Dell to assemble these ultra-thin laptops with high quality thermal paste... Did you clean the paste and apply new one just to the CPU and GPU, or also somewhere else?

I am Toshiba trained, and spill resistant on a Toshiba laptop means it will resist blowing up for a limited amount of time to allow you to backup some critical files or shutdown and remove the battery.

    So you should panic.

Liquids can also cause damage months after the spill as anything other than water will cause corrosion.

I have a month old ASUS UX51VZ that I upgraded from a 2012 HP Envy. I haven't been impressed thus far with the system in comparison with the Envy. I am very drawn to the new XPS 15, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with both this system and the Asus that I already own. I got a great deal on the Asus ($1600) for an open box so I jumped on the deal when I would normally do a 2 week search. Go ahead and sell me on the system more than notebookcheck did.

I was thinking of doing this, but instead with IC diamond instead. Is there a reason why you went for Gelid?

Will this void my warranty? I assume it will, but could Dell every find out?

    Hi, new poster.

Ordered mine (middle spec, can't afford the full SSD, despite wanting the big battery), on 2nd Feb, was told it'd be 7-10 working days during order, and then got a message saying 24th March!

Looking online at the sales page it's saying 17th March as the estimated ship date.

Can I realistically expect to receive it before either of those dates? I've nearly cancelled and ordered an MSI GS70 several times (I've told dell this and they don't seem bothered), but I've decided to stick with my guns. I think I'm making the right choice but the wait is going to kill me.

I also ordered mine the same date (full SSD) with a 30% code. I stuck with cheapest shipping during checkout, and then went in a chat with a dell support and complained about the long ship date and they gave me 2 day shipping for free.

Right now, my order says March 18, but I feel your pain...the wait is also going to kill me!!!

Purchased mine from there in November and no complaints on my end. Contrary to what some others have mentioned, you do still get Dells at home service warranty for a year is purchased via Costco (though it took a month for the letter saying such to come for whatever reason - it came in the form of an already paid invoice for $55 from Dell strangely),

I know when I went to check out there was a $100+ surcharge for not being a member.

I thought I did well with an 18% discount for being a Dell employee!! The 30% codes were part of Dell's Mystery Coupon promotion, which sent out codes worth either 10, 20, or 30% off; only 1% of coupon codes were of the 30% variety, and that campaign ended a while ago. And no, they weren't multi-use anyway. :)

I ordered it the same day as you, same estimated ship date. Spoke with a Dell "specialist" and he claims it usually will be here before a month. Fingers crossed though.

    Wow. That much? :O

Any chance you'd have any more coupons or know when the next sale will be happening?
