Me too. I have a credit from HP that is burning a hole in my pocket so I may end up going with that one. I do prefer the styling of the Dell better though.
-
-
I somewhat prefer the Dell too. The almost $700 difference in price for the Vega model made me order the HP though.
-
So, no way of getting 32GB with this one?
-
Not until later this year according to Alienware and XPS head Frank Azor in his reply in this tweet. https://twitter.com/AzorFrank/status/979368494687899648
-
There is no game anyway which would require more than 16GB RAM

Windows 10 is for cheap PCs.
-
No, Windows 10 is for AWESOME PC's regardless of price. good try though.

Sorry...but I tell the truth...have a nice day! Oh, they ARE releasing a 32gb ram version just later in the year? I will wait until I can get my paws on that one!!! sweet!
-
If I wanted to game I wouldn't consider this laptop for that anyway.

Seems to be interesting based on the initial reviews I could find. Looks like the firestrike score is better than my 9560: https://www.digitaltrends.com/laptop-reviews/dell-xps-15-2-in-1-review/
HP also has their x360 listed. It's quite a bit cheaper than the Dell, I can get an i7/4k/8gb for 1415. I'll probably just wait till the xps is in the outlet though and see if I can score one for ~1000. I could do that and sell my 9560 as well as my inspiron 2-in-1. -
If you are planning on the 15 2 in 1 soon, let me know how you like it. I am waiting until I can get 32gb of ram in mine.

Sadly it won't be until they are more affordable. Even with my military discount and 17% off coupon it's still ~1550 after taxes for the 16gb/i7 model. That's crazy talk to me. -
Are you in the USA? I am seeing the prices nearly the same... excluding coupons and such. Well I guess if you go 4k vs FHD on the dell that is.
-
Yes, in the US. This is what I was looking at getting. These are the specs for the Spectre x360 for $1,739.99. The same specs for the Dell is $2,409.99, except you don't get the free pen and the battery is smaller at 75 WHr.
512 GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD
Windows 10 Pro 64
6-cell, 84 WHr Lithium-ion Battery
Intel® Core™ i7-8705G (3.1 GHz, up to 4.1 GHz, 8MB cache, 4 cores) + Radeon™ RX Vega M Graphics (4GB dedicated memory)
Full-size island-style backlit keyboard with integrated numeric keypad (Dark Ash Silver)
15.6" diagonal 4K IPS micro-edge BrightView WLED-backlit touch screen with Corning® Gorilla® Glass (3840 x 2160)
16 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (2x8GB)
Intel® 802.11b/g/n/ac (2x2) Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® 4.2 Combo
HP Pen (dark ash silver) -
Ha ha, My system with only 16gb is 3300 cdn. I am waiting until the 32gb version so I am guessing 3500.00 Worth it to me since I use it ALOT and the extra power over my system now would be welcome for speed of doing things.

Yeah our priorities are different. That's almost as much as my 12 core desktop cost with 8x8tb hard drives... -
Oh, I know I can get a kickass full desktop. I travel alot, and I use my laptop as my desktop when home/design center. So, having the most powerful laptop and also having 2 in 1 / pen is very important.Starlight5 and custom90gt like this.

Another, more powerfull option at the same size has popped up. With 6core/12Thread and Nvidia P1000 (about GTX 1060 level)

I believe the Quadro P1000 is more along GTX 1050 levels (maybe a bit lower even). It will have the certified drivers advantage over the integrated Vega GPU, of course.ThePerfectStorm likes this.

Problem with that is it's HP and not a dell xps. Hp is down the hall.

I would Put Dell XPS and Insperon systems much better quality than HP Spectre and Pavillion counterparts.... But from experience, HP Elitebook and ZBook are better than even Dell Precision and latitude -
Was a few years ago that I had my last HP but HPs Z Book and Lenovos P and T series are top notch unless you are a believer that has to have a specific brand. The XPS is also great IF you manage to get one that works as it should, but Dells QC is abysmal unfortunately. Their customer service is usually top notch though. Had to return my AW17 R4 4 times due to one quality problem after another before I finally got one working as it should. My XPS13 works great though, although I mostly use it for trips, vacations etc.pressing likes this.

I have owned elitebook and pavilion models. Both had to be sent back numerous times for warranty repairs (yes, HP fixed them, and fast, but the same issues kept happening...MORE than I can say for Asus, who pretty well told me to get bent)...Dell, I have owned about 20 of them. NONE had hardware issues. I had one software issue where it was more windows 10 than the dell, but a quick call and all was set back to correct. Acer, same deal. have owned about 40 acer models with NO issues except physical damage (not acers fault).

You've owned over 60 different laptops
? What do you average? like 4 or 5 a year? That's epic
I thought I was nuts with about 1.5 a year since early 2000's

Internals are much different than those of the XPS 15 (9560).
There seems to be a metal cage soldiered to the board which shields the CPU, GPU and vrm. That might be for thermal purposes, electrical noise purposes, and to prevent people from repasting lol.
I would be interested in seeing where the 3 heatpipes go under the secret metal cage.
The new fans seem to have more blades than the old ones. The close placement of the fans will reduce air intake from the case bottom compared to those of the 9560. -

That's an EMI shield. I doubt it is soldered, typically they have little tabs that hold the shield down. -
There are some low-res images in the service manual.
The VRM mosfets appear to be lined up and have a heatspreader.
Thermal performance under Prime95 and Heaven, before & after repaste, anyone?
-
Not sure. The front sure looks soldiered to the motherboard when compared to the right side. But then again, the photos are low resolution so I can't tell for certain.
-

Yeah it is hard to tell, but having a soldered EMI shield is a rarity at least in all of the electronics I've opened/designed.ThatOldGuy likes this. -
Common in good radio tuners, scopes etc. where EMI really matters.
But to your point, not typical to have soldered shields like this in modern laptops. We should have a friendly wager on this!ThatOldGuy likes this. -

Hahaha @custom90gt wins the friendly wager!
Some pretty smart servicability and what appears to be a nice 3rd gen layout. I quite like this laptop but will reserve judgment until some "real" testing comes in here by the nbr crew. A few quick thoughts:
- Easy removal of that "heat-sink shield".
- Coin-cell battery, big battery & fans are easy to access.
- The heatsink has 4 screws (yes!) somewhat equally spaced here; there seems to be a lot of piping to the fans albeit the 3 pipes are not dedicated (apparently but need to see underside to confirm).
- vrm takes a lot of space (higher power delivery potential). There seems to be some copper bridge to the "heatspreader" perhaps from some mosfets. Bridging more heat to the GPU. We will see how that balances out following the 9560 debacle.
- Unfortunately the PCH chip is floating in the wind (which causes fans to ramp up at very low temps on the 9550 and 9560).
- The keyboard is a root canal to replace. . .
BONUS - the LED diagnostic error codes are summarized on p.71 of the manual. -

Even in high end aerospace electronics most of the stuff is clipped/taped down and not soldered from what I've worked with. I don't think I've ever seen a laptop with a soldered EMI shield...
I'm glad that it looks like they've attempted to cool the VRM a little bit. The VRM cooling on the 7577 is great so maybe this will work well too.
If dell didn't overprice this laptop I'd already have one to put through the ringer.
In terms of the PCH, my guess is a little bit of thermal pad will take care of that.pressing likes this. -
Well considering its WAY cheaper than a comparable macbook pro, it's main competition, they priced it just right.
-
custom90gt Doc Mod Super Moderator
But more expensive than a HP x360. I'm considering the HP more and more every day. -
ThatOldGuy Notebook Virtuoso
I'm waiting till May to see what the HP Zbook 360 brings. The 600 NIT Dreamcolor screen is what is tempting me most. It starts at same price as XPS 2 in 1
I don't see how Macbook is competitor at all here; different use cases with Tablet and Pen functionality. Also Macbook's entry level GPU performance about 40% slower.
On the other hand; I guess it's about anything that is premium and aesthetically "pretty" that is a Macbook competitor now. Even if only basic functions are needed, the masses will through money at it if they like the way it looks, and think other people will notice. -
custom90gt Doc Mod Super Moderator
I do think the screen will be amazing but the P1000 is what turns me away from it. I wish they would offer something faster in its place. -
ThatOldGuy Notebook Virtuoso
Its about 10 - 15% faster than the GTX 1050... Which is ok, a little better than the XPS 2:1 Vega. But it is heavier by 3/8 of a lb.
What worries my most about the Intel G series is AMD graphics driver support in combination with Intel drivers. Neither are reputable in this area at all. I suspect they will be ok with AAA titles, but I love legacy and indie / more obscure games. I also use CREO and Key Creator which Quadro will be good for -
The XPS and Macbook directly compete against each other. When regular people compare devices, they look at the mbp and xps lines. Not, MBP and Inspiron basics. The fact that the dell is a 2 in 1, is another extra feature that macbooks don't do. More value again. So, faster, more features, more usage options, touch screen, pen support, and hundreds cheaper. I love this device. I cannot wait to get mine. I am going through ebates too, 10 percent cash back on dell purchases!

I had problems with my hp notebooks, I just can't get into them anymore.

I am curious as to where you got those performance numbers from. From the specs the P1000 is an underclocked 1050 (same gpu, same cores, same rops, etc). I realize you can overclock it to stock or higher than 1050 speeds.
