    Hello!

Just bought the 1TB PCIe model with the 86wh battery. Looking to swap with someone that has the smaller battery and the cable to connect SATA drive (cage too, if you have it).

Doing music production so I need the extra drive (pcie for programs and plugins, sata for recordings) and will almost always be plugged in.

In Chicago. Face to face is best but will do exchange via mail.

Hey Jason I couldn't figure out how to message you directly on this forum but I have been watching this thread since mid April. I just received the notification that you posted, which is great I have the 56wh battery with a cage and sata cable. I am very interested but I do live in Arizona. I am admittedly nervous about sending away my battery but I am sure you are also. If you are interested my email is [email protected] and shoot me a message.

    Hello all,

I'm looking at getting an XPS 15 very soon and will likely purchase one that has the 56wh battery. I'll be looking to swap for an 84wh battery as soon as I receive it. I'll post again once I have the laptop, likely within the next 2 weeks.

Sydney: Have 56whr, need 84whr. Happy to pass on the 32gb drive, cables, caddy and some extra cash on top for anyone willing to swap.
Edit: Battery is 2 months old.

So here comes now the question: I got the battery, cables and swapped. Everything seemed to work - at first.
But then I noticed 2 things:
    1. When reaching 30%, the red LED comes on and about 10 seconds later the system hibernates.
    2. When playing a GPU intense game on battery, you hear crackling from the speakers and the framerate drops from e.g24fps to 9fps
Using the power adapter seems to solve that problem. Note: my power profiles have been modified to do the same for battery and/or plug in operation.

Did anyone experience something similar - or is my 56Wh battery toast?

In Norway right now, but will be in Osaka, Japan two weeks from now (and staying there). Willing to swap 84Whr battery for 56Whr and cable/caddy frame. Not time critical so if anyone is reading this a couple of months from now and want to swap locally, send me a PM. (Not interested in international shipping)

Hi I just ordered a 9550 with the 56Whr battery and I am looking to swap with someone for the 84Whr. I'm located in Portland, OR. I also added my request to the Google Doc.

Adding my name to this old forum, I'm from the UK and I'm living in Germany.
Looking to swap my 1T hard drive, the metal housing, the SATA cable, and the rubber pads that seat the drive, all for an 84Whr battery.
I would also be willing to pay a small amount if I could garantee a battery that still has a long life and has been carefully used, although I can't see any-way to verify the battery condition.

I just checked and there seem to be a lot of 84whr batteries for this model up on eBay now in the $50 range. I just ordered one so I'll let y know how it goes. 1080p and 84whr should get me 8-9 hours I'm hoping.

Yes please let us know how it goes. Is the battery a genuine one from Dell?

I wonder also if the 97Whr battery from the new Dell XPS 15 will work with the older one?

I say that the new 97 whr battery should work on the 9550 model. I feel cheated now that the 9560 launched with fresher specs. Fudging Dell. Makes my 9550 look like crap.

From a practical perspective, the 9550 and 9560 are very close in specs. The case and CPU are vanishingly similar. The small step forward by the GPU may be reduced in practice by the thermals of such a small laptop (and Dell's thermal engineering).

The increase in GPU-performance is not insignificant, and isn't pascal more power efficient than maxwell, thus reducing heat?

    HI,

I just installed a 56Wh battery (purchased from dell) in my new precision 5520 (which came with the 97Wh one - type 6GTPY, FYI).

Unfortunately the system doesn't recognize it as original and it won't charge it.

I tested the battery on the XPS 9550 and it worked.

I've also tried to swap the 56wh from the XPS in the precision but same issue. Battery not original.

Is there anything I need to update in the system?

The precision comes with the 56Wh as well.

    thanks.

    (97wh not for sale ;))

    Correct.

I downgraded the BIOS as well but nothing has changed.

The battery should be ok so it looks like a software issue to me.

It is unlikely that they changed the 56wh battery specs/tags/IDs for the precision 5520.

I'm waiting for another precision from dell and I'll check the battery on it as well.

The battery is chipped, mine returns this info.

    Code:
    Field Value
    Power Management Properties
    Current Power Source AC Line
Battery Status 100 % (High Level)
    Full Battery Lifetime Unknown
    Remaining Battery Lifetime Unknown

    Battery Properties
    Device Name DELL 1P6KD54
    Manufacturer SMP
    Serial Number 1290
    Unique ID 1290SMPDELL 1P6KD54
    Battery Type Rechargeable LiP
    Designed Capacity 83995 mWh
    Fully Charged Capacity 81271 mWh
    Current Capacity 83995 mWh (100 %)
    Battery Voltage 13.017 V
    Wear Level 3 %
    Power State AC Line

So I am putting my money on Dell coding the board to work with designated batteries. Should be able to confirm in a week.

Does the original battery work in the 5520?

Yes, the original 97Wh battery doesn't have any issue in the 5520.

The new 56Wh battery works in the 9550.

I've escalated the case to Dell but it might take forever.

Why they would code the board? The old 5510 still has the 4k configuration available with HDD and 56wh battery (and they are selling it now!).

Tomorrow I should receive another 5520 (RMA because of light bleed) but I bet that I'll have the same issue.

Could you check whether the 97 battery works in the 9550? This might help clear things up for compatibility across generations

Most likely the incompatibility is unintentional. Dell has a good track record of providing battery compatibility between different generations of notebooks which use physically identical batteries and business customers expect this compatibility so the stock of spare batteries can be minimised.

I would expect it can be rectified in a BIOS update in due course but the first task is to get Dell to agree that it's a problem which needs to be fixed.

I can confirm that the "new" 5520 machine arrived today has the same problem.
56Wh Battery is not detected as original and it won't charge.

It's really weird to me that there is this incompatibility.
The 5520, as well as the 9560, is sold with both configuration and the MB should be the same.

Maybe they also updated the 56Wh battery?

Looking at the photos another forum member posted here, the 97Wh battery has the same naming scheme as the 84Wh battery, but obv. a different capacity. It definitely looks like it would fit. Somebody who already has it should definitely throw it in a 9550.

It fits, the chassis is the same.

I haven't tried to install it yet because the xps is in use at the moment and I have the HDD there :).

I might try to see if there are issues with the bios.

It looks like the new models cannot work with the previous generation of batteries (the replacement part has a different code).

84w battery doesn't work in the 9560, 97w battery works in the 9550.

Go figure, Dell does it backwards again.

well, companies generally tries to make stuffs so that new stuffs are still compatible with old stuffs,
    and
they wouldn't have considered putting a 97wh battery in 9550 when they were developing it

    so, its backwards

In case anyone is still viewing these, just called dell and they offered me a refurbished battery for £85 if I return my 56whr, or £150 if I wish to keep it.. first off, what's people's experiences with refurb battery's? And also opinions on 3rd party such as eBay batteries. Don't want to go down that route but I if needs must..

Dell refurbished means it is taken from a scrapper or defective return, not tested (most people on here will back me up on Dell not testing things they send out) and shipped out, so you could get a year old one or even 2 year old if it has a bit of life left in it.

I'll check this and get back to you, I'm in lancashire so a collection swap is not doable. Could you do the same and check health of yours please?

Obviously it would be money coming my way, but how much?

Best to check with a 3rd party app to get the wear level, Dells "excellent" covers a large percentage :(

Aida64 has it in the power management section or you could try BatteryInfoView

The built in battery chip is wrong on the 9560 batteries so you need to check the actual full charge against the designed capacity rather than the wear level.

Mines 9% wear from new but actual charge is 97003 and designed in 97003 :)
