Received my FHD model yesterday. Everything looks fine so far.
Set FHD to 100% scaling from the 125%. No coil whine. Comes with the Toshiba SSD.
Was looking to do a clean install. Do I go with ACHI or RAID? Or it doesn't matter really? -
For fun...
I own both and like them both...
I think they are both of the same family of panels: SHP1476
Also something interesting...
4K
96% RGB
99% Adobe RGB
FHD
97% RGB
78% Adobe RGB
With a margin of error of course. Has anyone tested their screens? Are your RGB percentages about the same?

We measured both screens on notebookcheck and all their stats were tabulated. Check the UHD 9560 review for it

You may get the best of both worlds. Supposedly even with a FHD screen the Kaby Lake processor will output a full 4K signal to an external 4K TV or monitor, with the lid down.

I recently received my new XPS 9560 (FHD, 512GB, 16GB, UK) but unfortunately I've found that there's an issue with the display. The image appears to be off-centred horizontally by a few pixels, so the very left hand edge of the display is cut off by the bezel, and there's a narrow black bar on the right-hand edge. It's only a few pixels, but it's pretty obvious and distracting when using a terminal snapped to the left-hand side of the screen.
I'm running a fresh install of Win10, with display scaling switched off. I've put the latest BIOS on it, and have confirmed that the issue is still there. It's noticeable even on BIOS screens so isn't directly Windows or driver-related. I've tried several versions of the Intel driver including the latest Dell release, Intel's public release and Intel's most recent beta release.
I haven't seen any mentions of this issue - anyone else experienced this? Could it be a BIOS/EDID issue, or is the panel physically misaligned in the machine? -
No I was pissed off as I loved the light sensor on the 9530 I had, a simple registry hack and it was perfect.
-
AHCI with the Toshiba driver (may need to force it if it is a XG4 drive but it has been covered on here)
Very common that the panels misaligned, the problem is they will only ship a refurbished display along with the fact some half trained 3rd party engineer will pull apart your brand new laptop.
I would demand a new laptop is sent. -

For comparison, Spyder4 Express measured the FHD SHP1453 panel in my Precision 5510 as 99% sRGB, 79% Adobe RGB so very similar.

Since you seem to have more laptops than BestBuy, have you had any experience with ThinkPad P50/P70 and if so have some opinions on it compared with the XPS15. The dongle free life is tempting, especially being a consultant that frequently move around between clients and meetings. The "Oh, no Wifi, and I forgot to bring my adapter for X, Y and Z" are getting all to familiar
Of course, if anyone else has some opinions on Thinkpad P-series vs XPS15, feel free to share them
Full disclosure, I actually had a Thinkpad P50 myself for a short while but was pissed of with the subpar 4K screen on it and returned it. But must say that there are plenty I miss about it, dongle free life being one, but also the fact that it overall felt more "professional" than most laptops, including the XPS15. Things like Intel WiFi instead of Killer, fingerprint reader lit in the dark, full set of ports, MUCH BETTER support software (like an update utility that actually finds updates).
Edit:
Of course, the XPS15 have several advantages also, but those are probably well known already.Last edited: Mar 11, 2017 -
What about using eDrive SSD encryption with the Toshiba XG4 drives? Does it work well with the 9560? Any guides on how to use it that is XPS15 specific? Seem to be a lot of hazzle geting it up and running.

An interesting article about the Toshinba XG4 and how to improve performance. Not sure if it has been mentioned before.

I take it you didn't know all XG4 are listed as [Toshiba XG4 non-SED Solid State Drive]
So no you can't!

Well, thats a bummer
Is the same true for the PM961 SSDs?
-
It is the same for all the drives shipped with the XPS15 range, once you go to the 5520 precision range you can specify better drives that are SED based.
This is why I gave up and have bought a 960 evo 1tb so I can use the SED feature.improwise likes this. -
I can confirm. This works 100%. Just ran the benchmark and my results are similar to his.

Doe you guys like the keyboard on the XPS15? Must say I find it a bit, well, cheap, compared to MacBook Pro and Thinkpads. The screen is growing on me though and easily trumps the Thinkpads.
-
Any problems getting the Samsung 960 Evo/Pro to work with the XPS? Like a lot of messing with drivers etc? Which BIOS mode are you running it in?
-
Interestingly enough I was just talking to @DeeX about this as I've noticed that there are two different variants of the keyboard.
On the 4k it feels slightly more clicky with a slightly longer key travel, whereas the keyboard on the FHD feels more rubbery/bouncy and with a shorter key travel.
The tactile feedback seems to be about the same, but I do like the 4k keyboard better as it feels more confident with my key entries as oppose to the rubbery one where I did notice more typos.
I'm not for certain if the different variant of keyboards have any ties to which screen model it is paired with, but I'd be interested to hear what type yall have received and with what screen version.
Zero. Samsung 960 PRO in the 4K and Evo 960 in the FHD.
I usually don't use any extra drivers as it runs perfectly fine without it.
Definitely no magician software and if anything only use the Samsung SSD specific driver (not magician)
NO SOFTWARE / DRIVERS, JUST SIMPLE AND PLAIN.

Actually, I doubt that there are two different types of keyboards, rather the QC monster coming back again. When I bought my XPS13 in 2015, it required two replacements before the keyboard felt as it should. Which to me means less wobbly keys and rattle but instead something firm that feels like it was made to last more than ten times before the keys fell off.
Do you ser any benefits for the Pro over the Evo diregarding the longer warranty and 2TB version?
Edit:
To be honest, I am kind of impressed by the fact that Dell manages to make different versions of something as simple as a keyboard. Ie how the quality can vary so much that it feels like two different products. Are these man made in some asian sweat shop or what?

It's common for Dell to have different manufactures to make certain components as I've found on the AW's. The actual keys texture look physically different, therefore, I really think there are two makers and/or they are just from two different runs from different molds I guess? Interesting eh....
The Samsung EVO is more than enough as I would take that over any other brands MLC any day.
I only have the Pro as well, because I store a lot of important files on there for clients, however, I would trust the Evo just the same....really would. Okay....fine I admit, I just got the Pro for giggles, just because. I 100% do trust the data integrity on either one the same. After it is Samsung. #1 in the World.

custom90GT repasted a dozen 9550s so might be the best person here to comment.
It seems at least two keyboards and two trackpads have been floating around; similar but different -
I forgot to mention that the track pads are definitely different as well. No doubt about it ...mind you I've owned 2x 9550's before so the characteristics of the track pads are nothing new to me...Last edited: Mar 12, 2017pressing likes this.

Would a display from the 9550 be compatible with the 9560?
-
Same panel so yes.
-
Good to know in case I hate my FHD.
-
Lost count haha
-
You are probably right, I always assumed that Dell only used different manufacturers for standard components like RAM, SSD etc and not for unique components like the keyboard. But if you can actually see a physical difference between the two then its hard to deny. But it still feels strange if it should be decided by what screen type you have, but nothing surprises any more with Dell.
Thanks for the Pro vs Evo thoughts.

This has probably been up before but does anyone else notice lag and stuttering when not running in High Performance mode? I do and DPC watching seem to confirm this, but when switching to High Performance mode, it seems to decrease quite a lot. This is for stuff that shouldn't really require that much performance, like playing a YouTube video in FHD quality. Is the iGPU and its drivers to blame?
-
I just did a fresh install on one of the xps(s) and had tested out the different Intel graphic drivers, including the beta etc... The laptop felt really sluggish with the stock driver from Dell and the ones from intel.
Try this one, ending in 4590 as it fixed all my lag issues.

Thanks. Seems like unlike the Dell Update, the Intel Updatera actually seem to find new drivers including the 4590. Have to download it manually though as it won't update Dells drivers but hopefully when having installed the Intel stock one, it should work for the future.
BTW, will make a clean installation myself if I decide to keep the XPS15, I always do that, don't trust anyone who could have an incentive to put in some crapware of any kind on my system

Where some hazle upgrading but once it was done, I think the lag has decreased and also the scrolling is more smooth now.

Thinking that there might be something wrong with my LCD screen, even in a room that is very dark I feel that the maximum brightness is still not bright enough and that it seems like there is some kind of "layer" on top of the image. Is it the touch thingy that could be causing this? Also noticed that on some solid backgrounds, like the blue windows background you get when doing a ctrl-alt-delete it almost looks like the screen is dirty, some faint dark clouds over the display area. Anyone experienced anything similar? This is the 4K screen.
Last edited: Mar 12, 2017 -
No issues like that for me. I feel brightness is adequate. Not too bright on the highest 100% but plenty bright. I also find the screen to be pretty uniform. Sounds like you have a defective panel.
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk -
Adequate is probably the correct description, but I had imagined the 4K screen to be better than "adequate". It's still better than MANY other LCD panels though.
-
What kind of accessories do you use with th eXPS15, like adapters, docking stations etc? Any thoughts about the TB16 dock?

I am now also experiencing the problems where the screen (4K) "flashes" without any warning, kind of like if the cable connecting it to the GPU had broken or something. A second or two later it is back again. I've seen this being reported here before, any solutions found?
-
Ah that's good that it's finding the 4590 driver...
Yes, ALWAYS clean install.... just the peace of mind alone is worth every bit....
The 4K in the Dell XPS is one of the best, if not the best 4K panel that money can buy at the moment...
I was just thinking of putting Linux on my XPS...actually I will it's just that I'm not sure if I want to do it right this second or work more on tuning this little gem....
Hmm..No issues here...It's highly likely due to a driver of some kind...perhaps a driver that's not even related. -
Am I being crazy/picky, or is my backlighting too uneven? Left side is warmer than the right (pics taken at 6500k and 10000k, respectively) Should I get this replaced?
