Hey guys! Does any of you have any idea about when can we expect 9560s to appear in Dell Outlet? I tried the dell chat, but they gave me a phone number and I'm in Europe so...

Also I am in a rush to get a new laptop so maybe I'll end up getting 9550 or precision 5510, do you think I could get a palmrest with a fingerprint reader later from ebay for those or is there not gonna be any connection on the mainboard for the reader?

    Thx

Does it keep the profiles you used, in Windows Color Management?

I located the DPC folder, found the display profiles in a subfolder and made a copy of them, uninstalled DPC, installed the relevant profiles into Windows CM (a bit of a menu gym so one needs to google up instructions), now can switch among them in Windows CM without having DPC.
If it keeps the profiles used, that'd be super easy. Mind I need at least two, one normal wide-gamut and one toned-down for non-CM programs and untagged sRGB content.

If you calibrate, you must remove DPC anyway (maybe Intel video driver messes things up too?). I'd like to but I see my calibrator is dated and not suitable for wide-gamut displays, need to find someone with a more recent one.

I'm currently fighting support to see if I can buy a 6-cell battery from Dell. Given that I own 2 9560's (one FHD one UHD) they bloody well should sell me one.

That would be nice. I was going to go with the 56WHr battery on both of my XPS's as well, but with how large m.2 NVMe drives are today, I don't really have a need for a 2.5" Sata drive. The larger 97WHr battery will suite me better so I went with that...

Keep us updated...I'm curious to know if they will be understanding or not. Good luck!

    I called DELL today.
They offered to replace the product entirely or replace the screen with their premium one-day on site support. They've got some very respectable and great support there.
However, I am very unhappy, so I have arranged a return for a full refund. They will collect on Monday.
It is sad, as I will have to stay with my 6yo laptop for now, but I will be on the hunt for a new system very soon.

That's a bummer. So was your return due to the coil whine and screen issue? Perhaps I should search back and read. :p

I've been extensively testing the XPS, both the 4K and 1080p and have not come across the coil whine and/or screen issues. I remember on the 9550 - 4K there were some flickering issues, but that appears to have been fixed with the new Kaby refresh; so far? I'll keep a close eye on this and will report back with any findings.

Try the 4k on battery. Screen flicker maybe ever 90 minutes?

Yes, even if they replace the screen, coil whine will still be there. If they replace the whole system it is pot luck really, and I don't want to go into rounds of replacing units. I've had that with an iPhone 7 Plus hissing and screeching to me and replaced twice with the same issues :p
Adding up the fact that they promised 1x16GB stick, instead of 2x8GB that it came with and the Toshiba SSD, this turns into a deal breaker.

The laptop also had hissing going on but that was barely audible if I put my ear very close to the keyboard, so it wasn't an issue for me.

Someone said a few posts ago that the Toshiba SSD claim must stop. I am sorry, but I do not feel this way.
They sent the reviewers models with the Samsung PM961, probably the fastest consumer SSD currently. Is it moral to send customers an SSD with half the speed? Yes, it is contractually legal because they did not promise a specific brand or model, but for me it is immoral and I can feel disappointed about it. After all, this is why we have consumer laws in place which allow returns with no questions asked for purchases over distance.

It seems that they're having to source batteries from other countries, but they are willing to let me purchase the battery for upgrade. It may be 1-2 more weeks to get the part, though.

(I should point out that I live in Thailand, and the 9560 is not even released in APEC yet)

I was sat watching TV last night and saw 2 complete flickers (total black screen for a split second) within 10 seconds, then nothing for a few minutes until the power saving turned the screen off.

I'll keep an eye out for this on my 4K unit. I always do a clean install of Windows 10 and only install certain drivers, while cherry picking any updates one by one (crazy I know, but I'm very OCD and not much a fan of M$ nor do I trust them, but that's a convo for another day).

If it's not something in the bios then perhaps it's a bug in one of the drivers that is either related or not related all together, which is common.

Has this happened to you only when you're running on battery?

I've also noticed my screen flickering being progressively worse this past week, at least I think it is. Although frequency seems more or less the same, it blinks in succession more often when it's "time to flicker". I'm also having less black full screen flickers and more flickers that resemble a qr code; half of the time it is black while the other half it will be red/pink. I've read a thread back in December on the Dell forums that a mobo swap fixed the problem, but the thread here says otherwise. I still have a week until my return period ends so I'll keep monitoring until then. I suspect it might be a problem related to the wire that connects the motherboard to the screen. These flickers also wake up my computer from idle/sleep mode. Besides this and the sensitive fans (activates consistently at 2500 rpm when pch diode is above 45C and full throttle/5000 rpm at 60C), I have no other qualms about my current 9560.

Why is your keyboard different? just because you have a fingerprint reader the keyboard is different? That enter key looks funkkkkkyyyyyyy

UK layout if i'm not mistaken.

And yes they do come with dirty marks as the filthy bastards who test them do not wash enough!

Take the base off and see if you can spot a misaligned part, microphones are the usual culprit.

    Hi all,

New here but have been watching this thread with interest. I received a brand new top range (i7, 4K, 32GB, 1TB PM961 SSD) XPS 9560 back in early Feb but it had a few issues; minor coil whine and the 4K screen has a red/yellow tint on the right side which is really annoying. Reading advice here and on Reddit, I pushed Dell for a replacement and they sent one out.

Receiving the replacement...things are worse. Coil whine is really bad (I can hear it upstairs when laptop is downstairs) and they put a Toshiba SSD in... I'd have been tempted to keep it as the screen is fine, but the whine is just too bad.

So contacting Dell again...my only option is return all for a full refund, or have an engineer replace the screen. Given the supply issues on Samsung SSDs and the fact that it's just the screen, I've opted for an engineer to swap out. Annoyingly they won't guarantee a "new part" and the screen will be labelled as "refurbished" which means its either "new, factory tested" or "from a new system returned by a customer". No amount of phone calls have resulted in a new part, so I'm going to see what happens and if it's an old part, I'll be pushing for a refund.

Otherwise the system has been great - I've followed the recommendations on undervolting and get around 38oC idle (plugged in) and anywhere from 70-90oC under load. I've not yet encountered thermal throttling that I can see.

If the screen replacement goes well, I may see if I can get a deal/discount on extended premium warranty, as I suspect the screen will be the first thing to go. I'm also expecting a call from one of their "customer concern team" to see if I can wrangle some sort of discount/comp for the hassle - the tech support team were adamant they could offer me nothing and unlikely the other team will.

I'm in the UK if that helps anyone else!

If you can make one good one from the 2 laptops then do it, been there, done that.

You can make the engineer do it, don't let him bully you he gets paid plenty for the call, paid PER call so they always want to run of!

I tried to get support to swap the screen from the replacement unit I have to the original system I want to keep and they refused, stating it's not possible for <reasons>. I'll see if I can get the engineer to do it when he's on site but they are also collecting the replacement system on that same day, so may not work. At least if I have to have a few screen replacements, its better than the other internal components...

Yeah just tell the DPD guy the laptops not ready and off he will go happy as larry (they showed up Monday without Dell telling me)
They will contact you sometime over the next month (yes month not hours or days) to arrange another collection. Do you live near Derby? I could do that job in 10 minutes and have you sorted with a repaste thrown in while you drank a brew :p

Unfortunately not - I'm down near London. Will Dell not try to charge me for keeping hold of the replacement if I then the DPD guy away? May just call them and ask them to move the date anyway.

Will let you know how I get on with the engineer. Definitely not keen to have a refurbished part put in a new laptop!

I was also going to repaste - probably after I get the screen replaced now. Any recommendations on paste to use? I used to use artic stuff back in t'day.

The prices have increased for refurbished 9550 after the launch of 9560. It's not a huge difference after the discounts and refunds. 9560 refurbished will have almost the same price of new one after dell discounts and refunds.

Sometimes it did happen on 1.0.3 too (may be after changing BIOS seetings). I think this is good at least i can know if the fans have deteriorated over time. In my old laptop the fans became slow over time before dying.

Malaysia , Hongkong , China , Australia has it listed . US has the best pricing

Check out the XPS 15 9550 temperature observations (undervolt + repaste) for paste opinions, I have some Gelid GC extreme at the mo.

TBH the 3rd party engineers Dell use should be happy enough, if you know you have a good screen sat in front of you and a good base sat next to it then imo it would be a no brainier to keep said customer happy by swapping the parts over, seriously, f**k what Dell said on the phone, get your story ready, Dell said as laptop A has a good screen and a base with (inset issue) and laptop B has a bad screen and good base that you will be able to swap parts over as they couldn't guarantee you having a perfect new screen for my brand new laptop.

And yes you could try to arrange a new collection and no they will not charge you. If they even show up on the day as they showed up week late for one of my many collections.

First dell XPS unit that I've received with signs of testing. Filthy bastard is right.

I've taken the back cover off to check if something misaligned but can't see anything. I think it's the carbon fibre chassis that is bent in a bit so bottom cover sticks out. Where is the microphone located?

How hard and how long does it take for that ? I don't mind having "only" 16 gb ram but did you change the wireless card for drivers or performance problem ? And I still wonder how noticeable it is in term of ssd performance between toshiba and samsung one ? I mean both are SSDs but if it makes a few sec of boot difference I wouldn't bother changing it at all.

4K hands down for me. I have both sitting right here in front of me.

The 1080p screen on the Xps hurts my eyes, because everything seems blurry and out of focused. I'm not talking about response time or ghosting, but rather just plain text on the screen.

Maybe I'm just so used to my 1440p that I run across the board or perhaps the retina displays of my Macs have spoiled me, but 1080p, no can do nor could I ever recommend that to anyone.

The 4k looks and feels a lot more premium as well. It has near perfect Adobe rgb and color gamut coverage.... Just a gorgeous screen and it'll make even make 1080p look way more vibrant and better. Some will talk about the degrading of the image due to scaling (interpolation?) but it has never bothered me...

I've gamed in both and even gaming at 1080p on the 4k was a much better experience.

BTW I don't run any of my 4k screens at 4k, but rather 1440p or the closest equivalent so the whole scaling issue is not even an issue...

Your display scaling is set to 125%... turn it down to 100% and that should fix that... I did just today and heck...gosh dood...everything is so sharp... Things are almost too small... you can also change your cleartype to help with text.

Try setting the FHD to 100% scale and see how you like it.

I'm in the process of swapping my UHD model for an FHD (glare, battery life)

Which is the exact RAM model shipped with the 9560?

If I choose the 16 Gb RAM model, is it a 8x2 (both slots filled) or a single slot with 16 Gb and one empty slot?

Is it possible to buy an already upgraded to 32 GB RAM model directly from Dell or do you suggest to upgrade by myself once the laptop has been delivered? I'm not speaking here about price only but also support if something goes wrong...
I'd buy from Dell Italy and I can't find any configure option for the xps 9560 models.

I've read the actual hw theoretically supports up to 64 GB RAM, do you think we will ever have single 32 GB dimms in the "near" future?

    Thanks

It will be 8x2. Just buy the RAM online if you really need 32GB.

I could understanding not wanting the glare, but to each his own....I really like the 4K much more than the 1080p and the trade off is well worth it.

It just depends on what you use it for and as a content creator, I need a good screen. The 1080p seems like a low end panel to me and no it's not just due to the resolution. I've seen excellent 1080p panels that are stunning. The one in the XPS IMO is not one of them.

Some software scales better than others. Setting everything to 100% scaling can result in some items being impossibly small. My approach is, for any program which scales badly, to go to the compatibility properties of the main executable and select "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings".

Solid advice - thanks! And also thanks for the offer of swapping, if I was closer I'd have taken you up - can't beat a good brew either ;)

Ordered some gelid and artic cleaner as per the guide, will see how I get on!

One other thing I was tempted to do was replace the wireless to an intel 8265. I'm not having issues per se any more with the new killer drivers, but is the intel that much of an improvement? I find my old 2013 MacBook Pro has better wifi signal than the killer when in same location. Would the intel improve again? It seems slightly better specced (bt 4.2 instead of 4.1 on killer etc).

I have a buddy with the 1080p on his XPS and he loves it, so ... as the saying goes, "whatever floats the boat." :)

I 'gotta' admit that my eyes have been spoiled starting from when the Retina displays first rolled out for Apple. Since then, the resolution around Retina, which is 2880x1800 has my retinas calibrated in that range. My favorite resolution even on a 4K is still 2560x1440 as I've always found that a sweet spot between FHD and UHD.

I was under the impression that the 1080 panels used by Dell were actually quite good compared to other FHD panels and what I have seen from reviews they seem to agree. Could it be that Dells total lack of QC has one again showed its ugly head? Like reviews getting excellent screens with superfast Samsung SSDs but average Joe getting something else...

The FHD panel on the 9550 / Precision 5510 is the Sharp SHP1453 LQ156M1 panel which is good. Can anyone who doesn't like their FHD panel check the type (in Device Manager or by using Moninfo). However, there's the point already touched on that some software at other than 100% scaling will look fuzzy. That's an issue with Windows, not the hardware.

There was a bit of a panel and Samsung SSD shortage / fiasco in Q3 and Q4 of last year so it became a hit or a miss with what we receive.

Sucks, because I've received Toshiba's in both of my XPS's :( Bummer... I would much rather have Samsung and/or SKHynix.

I'm on it. :) Let me fire up the 1080p XPS...

Update: Hmmm interesting....this is the Sharp SHP1453 from what the app says....(Monitor Asset Manager) is a great tool btw...

Is there really no auto dim on the XPS15 9560? Have received the 4K version a few days ago and brightness really seems to be much lower than I expected. And yes, Adaptive Brightness is off (seems to be default these days?). Does the Dell Premier Color affect brightness (in default settings)?
