it's noise from the cpu or ssd, quite normal

YEAAAHHHH. TTwo BSDO this morning without do anything.

Hey,
I have 2 questions.
1. Can I disable Geforce on battery so I get most run time? If yes, how? Or any onther way to optimize?
2. My Toshiba NVMe SSD is performing horribly (write speeds). Is there any way to solve this? (found a way with OCZ drivers but not able to install it)
Thanks -
Check the intel and nvidia drivers again. I think your intel update-ed with windows update, if you didnt ban it. Roll back and ban the update.
-
3rd arrived, bit of light bleed and still the red shift issue. Not looked into it further yet as I'm on hold after telling the premium tech to Google backlight bleed... Think I may use the attacking codes and order again as I will save £103 in top of the 10% I got last time

I wonder... isn't it costing them a lot to process all these returns?
-
Yeah sod them, I said you can give me some £££ back to keep the 1st and they said they can't Question is can I get a new one here before I arrange collection of the old one?
Not paying this much to have any problems
-
Maybe it costs even more to send faulty units to the dump
-
Well it will at the end of the day get some deals up on the outlet or failing that a bunch of spares!
-
Thanks! Just still curious why the noise would only come out when the power is plugged in? Scrolling can't be a CPU/SSD intensive task, yet it's only then, and only when power is plugged in, that the noise occurs .... Any chance someone could help me understand?
-
I think it's to do with the laptop running in higher power mode, it has been noted a few times on here and fact remains the laptop is so quiet without the fans and has so little insulation due to the ultrabook form factor it is part and parcel of it.

Hi Gonz0. I follwed your advice: "Grab the service tag from the packing list and use the service tag on the drivers page to see if it shows a Liteon or Toshiba firmware update, it if doesn't you may be getting a Samsung but no way to guarantee it."
When I go to the driver list, I don't see any drivers at all related to the SSD. Perhaps I'm just clueless as to what I am supposed to be looking for but I see no firmware related to Toshina, Liteon, OR Samsung. Thoughts? -
Through NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings
Change Preferred Graphics Processor from Auto to Integrated graphics
You can try to automate this switch using powershell to switch modes when on AC or battery
I running intel drivers and its performing very good.
According to CristalDiskMark 1030MB/s sequential and 158MB/s random 1 thread speeds
That's way tooo much for regular usage (of course it possible even more by installing latest Samsung SSD...) Can you run CristalDiskMark so we can understand what is "horrible" according to you? -
I was getting around 40MB/s writes in AS SSD seq
-
I got a Hynix today, 2k read so not that bad, it is going back for a refund anyway as the screens duff again.
No one will see a samsung again that was just for the review laptops and the initial run to get the word out, dodgy Dell. -
If I understand correctly, the SSD is handled by Intel RST in the default RAID mode.
You can apply the factory SSD firmware and get rid of Intel RST if you switch over to AHCI, but this is not the Dell official way. -
I am impressed! Ordered Monday morning, DELL just shipped from China.
I sure hope it is fine this time.GoNz0 likes this. -
Those new nvidia drivers (I think) were also causing random BSOD for me as well. time will tell if the roll back worked.

Interesting. The Dell sales phone support told me it'd be a Samsung. If it isn't, is my best course of action to call and request a discount, a return, or what? Are you sure they are done with Samsungs?
Also just curious how many 9560's you are going through? Do you want to own more than one or you've just had to return over and over again? Are your issues with your computers problems the average user would also be troubled by or more for advanced users? -
Dell sales reps are full of s**t along with the tech support. I even had a tech support today telling me they had no record of this redshift issue reported by any customer so I gave tech the service tag of the last system I returned and after reading the logs it he was lost for words.
No one has had a samsung drive for a couple of months so yes I am sure.
And when I am spending close to 2k on a laptop it needs to be perfect, it took 4 attempts with the 9550 and I owned 2 of those, I sold the good one on here last month and got a full refund on the other due to ongoing issues.
The guy who bought it couldn't believe how good the condition was so you can get a good one once in a while
I can play this game all day with Dell, they never win. -

Crazy stuff! So do you think they will at least offer some kind of cash back if the driver is not the promised Samsung that the chat rep guaranteed me would be in the laptop?
It's actually quite amazing how much money they must lose on some customers. While I agree with your sentiment about a 2k laptop warranting 2k quality, I fear my lack of expertise will make me a lot more likely to be a sucker than you. -
You had better have kept a copy of that chat so you have something to go at them with.
-

Even if I have a recording, what would you recommend doing? Are there more options than just suck it up or return it? Do they give any kind other compensation? Will be pretty upsetting if I was lied to but I guess that's the most likely scenario given what you've said.
-
People have asked for a partial refund to cover the lower spec drive as they released all review samples worldwide with high spec samsung drives that cost more so it is basically fraudulent activity in my eyes. If they refuse tell them to come and collect it then ask to go to the resolutions team if you get nowhere. Anyone that says you wont notice the speed difference between a Samsung reading at 3000 mb/s vs a Toshiba at 1800 are so very wrong when it comes to unzipping a large file or opening a large photoshop image.
Thats all I can say on the matter as I have just got a good discount on a new one so I will wait and see what I can get away with when it arrives on the odd (slim) chance everything else is in good order. -
Any thoughts on the performance of Toshiba NVMe SSD?
I found this article but I cant seem to find the NVMe controller to change the driver to OCZ one.
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answe...purchase-nvme-drives-proprietary-drivers.html -
From the drivers section, it looks like my latest order will come with Toshiba SSD... hmm let's see. If everything else is good, I might keep it and push for a partial refund.
-
I'm sorry, but just about every real world benchmark of the fastest 960 Pro vs even SATA SSD drives has shown that there is no real god-like gains to be had when using mainstream software such as Photoshop, Lightroom, After Effects... Games load the same speed, the OS loads the same speed, etc etc etc.
If you want bragging rights or want to copy huge files between two 960 Pros, then cool, it'll be faster, but for general use and even pro use, you'll likely not notice the difference, aside from your bank balance.aBs0lut3z33r0 and vas like this. -
The problem isn't that the keyboard is thin, its that it just feels cheap. One might not like the keyboard on the new MBPs, or the MacBook Pros for that matter, but they do not feel cheap (and they aren't either
). Now, this is not the place to discuss the merits of the MBP, but rather, the keyboard for the XPS15 which just doesn't feel premium to me.
-
Any point asking for a replacement or are they all "OK but not great" (which I agree on myself).
-
Yes, that is what I have said over and over, how much money is Dell loosing on the pathetic QC they seem to have? All these returns must cost them so much.
-
Lol, does anyone here check other forums? Such as the Apple Macbook Pro forum? Tech is tech, and it all fails, all the time... no matter who makes it..
There are as many disgruntled posts over there as there are here, and they of course have no bearing on the overall QC of the company. The majority are happy and the minority post their woes... we all know this, so why bang on about it?! -
Well premium feel is a rather subjective thing ... I still dont like the mushy keys but then I like the carbonfire composite palm rest much more than the cold aluminum MBP. So a loss and a gain I can live with. Hopefully my fingers will soon accustom to these, forgetting the MBP.

The XPS 15 9560 Microsoft Signiture Edition sold by MicroCenter last week all seem to have had Samsung SSDs, at least according to the buyers posting here:
https://slickdeals.net/f/9860380-de...7-7700hq-16gb-512gb-ssd-gtx-1050-1620-or-less
Just seems like Dell store is no longer selling XPS 15s with Samsung SSDs. -
They probably specced a set hardware?
-
I bought the $1600 512GB version from MicroCenter last week and mine has the LiteOn. It would have been nice to have the Samsung, but it's pretty fast even as it is so I'm not too bothered by this. If you keep your laptop for more than a couple of years, you're probably better off upgrading it about halfway through the intended usage span. I've done it with most of my previous machines and I think it will work with this one too -- NVMe SSD prices are falling.

Can someone run the full dell diagnostics on the dell support site and tell me if every test runs. I am testing mine and every time a random test will either say "can not run", show an error or hang? I ran the diagnostic through the bios and do not have any issues.
-
I received my XPS-15 9560 yesterday (config: 32GB/1TB/UHD) and it's lovely!
I'm in Western Australia: the order was placed 13 March and delivered 22 March. Impressed with that.
For those interested the SSD is a Samsung 961 and the system build date is 16 March.
I've run through an extensive checklist of issues others have reported and performed the system diagnostics. No problems at all.
Even so, I've updated the BIOS and those drivers that needed it. Again, no problems.
Just a genuinely positive response to balance

Can we use external monitor with gsync? with a tb3/dp adapter? or since the nvidia goes through the intel, it doesnt support gsync externally?
-
I am afraid you cant use gsync in such case. Nvidia Optimus works in the way that all calculations made on Nvidia chip then go through Intel to the display... so all IO stuff made by Intel. Probably if Nvidia add " FreeSync" technology to list of supported standarts - then we can benefit from exactly similar technology ... but Nvidia doesn't want it at the moment as they have own proprietary gsync.
As workaround - you can connect external video card and connect your display directly to it.
Also make sure your external display support gsync
Nvidia maintains list of actual gsync displays here

Yes, but even better, I buy the products and draw my own conclusions. Unless I've been EXTREMELY unlucky with Dell and EXTREMELY lucky with Apple, there is a a huge difference in QC. Dell lack of QC is unfortunately a well know fact, not an opinion.
-
Nice to see you here Lisa, your reviews on YouTube are among those that I respect the most. And if I remember correctly, you weren't to impressed with the XPS15 keyboard in you long term review.

I don't know how you can say Dell lack of QC is a well known fact. I could go ask numerous people about Dell's QC and I would likely get numerous answers. I've set up a bunch of xps 9550's in an office and they haven't had any issues with them. On the other hand I've worked on a ton of apple products that have had many issues. Unfortunately most of the people I know that are apple fans would consider their overheating macbook pro a feature and not a problem.
I'm not going to say that Dell is perfect far from it, but in my experience the same thing applies to apple...improwise likes this. -
So I just noticed that the latest BIOS from Dell is version 1.1.3. It claims to:
My current version is 1.0.3. I don't have a Thunderbolt Dock and I haven't had any problems with the boot or the Nvidia GPU. Is it worth installing this? Does it override stuff like undervolting or mess with GPU or CPU performance? I would guess not, but it's theoretically possible for it to so. -
