LocTite instructions may say that it is not for use with plastics. It can cause them to fall apart.

A few of the XPS bottom plate screws go into some type of plastic so I use the blue LocTite only on the screws that go into metal and then just check up on the others on ocassion.

You should buy yourself a nice T5 screwdriver m8.

Woa, I am scared to reboot in case this is a hickup (and the amount of chrome tabs I have open) but the 2.3 NVMe driver and the 3B7QCXE7 firmware seem to have enabled bitlocker support.

    *edit
Still there after a reboot, might have to go through the pita process of creating a win2go drive, secure erasing and installing windows again to enable this!

Wow! I just checked and I am missing one of the bottom screws and many of them are not tight. Given that I have taken the laptop apart at least 5 times, it is probably expected :) Ordered some threadlock.

XPS screw come with self lock adhesive, if you been repaste/open chassis the adhesion may degrade thereby the vibration may causing the screw loose and drop out.

No joy getting hardware bitlocker running despite a secure erase setting encrypted drive to enabled, bored of it now so macrium's restoring the image.

Can someone say to me if this kind of ram (HyperX Impact HX421S13IBK2/32) are compatible with the 9560??

Yes BUT the ram is slower than standard, you should look for DDR2400 unless you get get that kit silly cheap as in 150 euro's

You would be better with Part Number: HX424S14IBK2/32

Samsung have said I will need to RMA the drive (960 EVO) for them to reset it... And this is via my engineers contact line as well!
Best not to click the encrypted drive option until they have a better way to reverse it as it prevents secure erase. *sigh*

    I ran HyperX 32GB DDR4 2400 ram in the Dell XPS 9550 i5 and 9560 i7 no problems (same model quoted by @GoNz0: HX424S14IBK2/32).

This was the fastest CAS latency ram available at the time 2400 CL14 I think. Not sure there is anything faster today.

Owned it for almost a year. Silly cheap at about 140$US

Do you mean 190Euro per 16GB stick?

Not that far off prices I see assuming it includes VAT of say 20% but do a search for suppliers in your country for prices. There may be other brands of compatable memory that are cheaper but that is always changing...

That seems to be a decent price in today's market. Search around to confirm. I wouldn't pay a lot more just to get to 2400 unless you are looking for ultra performance lol

This are used and the same, new, cost about 280 euro.
They are 2133 and my question is... there are great difference between 2400 and 2133?

Hi guys, got a 9560 with FHD+ i5+1050 today. Having a issue - thought to share, and see if it's a common issue.

Reset it to scratch (Dell's Win 10 1607). Updated the bios, etc. Then updated to Fall Creator update. Shortly afterwards, there is was a strip on the Windows / display flickered a bit. So I switched it off and the strip appeared in diagnostics mode too.

It's now gone. I'm going to try to reinstall both the video driver (with DisplayDriverUninstaller).

Is this likely to be a software or hardware bug? Machine's meant for a colleague (they need a laptop before going abroad to work) - keen for them to have a unit without issue. When the issue is visible in diagnostics mode, I'm worried if this unit might last (there was once I tapped the lid when this came up - so it might be display cable issue). Thoughts?

You need to check the cable connection m8, tapping it means it probably needs reseating or the cables faulty.

Thanks - also when it arrived there was a mark on the back / a tiny bit of the plastic on the rear display assemble is nudging up a bit. Is that quite near where the cable is suppose to go through?

(just reinstalling NVIDIA driver now. Grr it's so slow to be back on HDD)

Update: graphics driver installed. Can't seem to replicate the issue yet. Maybe it was Windows fetching the wrong Intel drivers (I got them from Dell's site now). Will try to see if I can replicate it now.

It appears Intel is releasing the updated 9260. 2x2 but 160MHz channels, 1.73Gbps max, BT5, M.2 22x30, seems to fit into current XPS laptops (while 9560 is for the new chipsets implementing part of the wifi stuff)
    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/wireless-products/dual-band-wireless-ac-9260-brief.html

On the WiGig 60GHz front they are killing the tri-band 802.11ad 18260 (18265 still alive?), likely in favour of the follow-up 802.11ay.

    I am buying a router ;)
However, I don't seem to see a moderatly priced box that would support this.
Otherwise it appears the perfect means of flooding the 5GHz band the way 2.5GHz already is...

Hey guys, recently I think my XPS 15 9560 has been overheating.

While rendering a video in premiere pro, temps reach (core 0 to 3) 92/85/84/84 (max) & 86/80/80/78 (averages), clockspeed on all cores stays at 3.390 GHz. This is already after repasting twice. Are these temps normal? I've already undervolted by -125mV on the CPU as well.

When I opened the computer up and stressed it out, I touched the heat pipes on either ends of the heat sinks. The one on the end closer to the GPU was noticeably colder to the touch. (This is while stressing both CPU and GPU) I've been very careful when handling the heatsink when repasting. Although, by my knowledge heatpipes are supposed to heat up evenly across the entire heatpipe (as was there intended design), so I'm thinking maybe I have a broken heatpipe? Despite my carefulness, would a fraction of a millimeter of bending destroy the heatpipe or damage its vacuum seal/capillary walls?

These temps absolutely normal if you take into account that your CPU still work at decent frequency - 3.4Hz - meaning there are no throttling.

Is it helpful to cap the processor at around 3ghz on laptops? On thicker workstations, e.g. ZBook, P51, etc happy to let them run with it - but on thinner machines, I do wonder what a good upper limit is.

The 8*C temp delta between cores 1 and 3 indicates that you might benefit from a repaste. I suppose people aim for say ~2*C variance but the CPUs vary a lot out of the factory so you don't know what is possible until you try.

Based on the limited info you posted, It does not seem that your heatsink pipe is damaged.

There are a lot of posts here where people run popular benchmarks and show scores with the 9560. If you want comfort that your system is performing in line with typical repasted/undervolted systems, just run the benchmarks and compare your scores/temps to those posted.

There are several layers of thermal protection. The CPU has built in procection in the 100*C range also.

Has anyone made any progress with the 77*C Thermal Cap? Now that I figured out how to Overvolt the GTX 1050, It's begging for some breathing room. So far I can do +215Mhz Core and +650 On Mem. I would really like to see +400Mhz on the core.

The Intel 9260 is likely to work in the 9560 and other XPS. Once it really becomes available. But not sure how many routers support the 160MHz channels (3x3 from the 9550 was rarely useful but is less exotic).

Hi all, i have an issue with my xps 15 9560: just recently it has started to emit a buzzing noise (coil whine) when idle from the top-central area under the keyboard ( where the dell logo is) and on the right side under the power button.
It's weird because the coil whine noise started recently and i didn't had it before.
I tried to re-install windows and use old drivers but still the same.
Do you have any suggestion (apart from calling dell support) ?

According to Intel-SA-00086 Detection Tool XPS 15 9560 systems are open to all sort of rootkits. Did you guys try to do anything about it? Capture.PNG
Drivers for Intel Management Engine available on Dell website are older than drivers from Windows update...

My battery wear level is going a bit crazy. It was 6.7% for awhile. All of a sudden, after having my computer die once from lack of battery, it showed 12.7%. Figured it was some kind of calibration problem so I calibrated the battery. After that the wear went UP to 14.1%. Hmm, so I tried once more and it stayed at 14.1%.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and it was still at 14.1% so I tried to calibrate it again. The result? Now 16.1% wear. What on earth is going on here? Time for a new battery or is it just some kind of error? This should be enough for a complaint to Dell if it isn't fixable given that it's barely 6 months old.

I have the windows update version, and the intel tool still reports as vulnerable. I suspect this can only be fixed in firmware

Can you check your battery management settings in BIOS? I don't remember the exact naming, but there should be a section that allows you to select options like "Adaptive", "AC only", " Custom", etc. This could be causing the results your seeing. The adaptive in particular alters the battery capacity to limit charge cycles in an attempt to extend battery lifespan

EDIT: did a restart, the section is called "Primary Battery Charge Configuration" under "Power Management". There's adaptive (the default and would dynamically alter battery capacity possibly like you've seen), standard, primarily AC, and custom

Thanks for the reply and checking your computer for more detailed instructions. I went to the BIOS where it is set to the default 'adaptive' setting. I don't really understand how that could explain the wear level dropping significantly after a single time fully draining the battery or why the battery wear would go from 4% to 16% in 6 months. Is there something I should do? Do you think the battery is to blame at all or it's purely a matter of configurations?

While its possible you have an issue with the battery or capacity calibration, with only 6 months use you shouldn't be seeing the level of wear you report and it shouldn't fluctuate like that, so I would bet its the adaptive setting causing this behavior. The adaptive mode is basically an algorithm that if it senses you don't use the full battery capacity frequently, it limits the single charge capacity in an effort to extend battery life span. I.E if this algorithm limits your battery capacity to 80% of total, every time you full discharge and charge the battery it only uses 4/5 of a cycle rather than 1 full cycle out of the lifespan rated 300 cycles, theoretically making the battery last longer in terms of months/years (as the number of cycles doesn't change). Here's a link I found about Dell software that explains it better: http://www.dell.com/support/manuals...bbbeff-4928-4def-89af-3d28d0a231ce&lang=en-us
To test this, you could set it to standard (or custom), and then fully charge and discharge the battery a few times to see if the capacity resets and stabilizes at a more expected value (say 90 to 95% of original capacity). Does this make sense?

For anyone wondering, I have just tried an Apple 61W USB-C charger with my XPS9560 and it appears to be charging OK with the laptop on. Most people have only mentioned the 87w version.

Currently at 68% with 1hour until full.
My mains power meter says it is sitting at 39-40W power draw, with occasional peak at 66watts. Laptop set to better performance mode.

I may be wrong, but i think if the battery was at a lower charge % then it would sit at a higher power draw and once it gets to a certain amount of charge, it lowers the draw.

To make proper calibration you could fully charge your battery to 100%, wait a bit until battery cool-down, set power settings to shutdown your PC at very low % (like 3% or bellow) and then draw its energy in one continuous discharge cycle until it switched off. In that circumstances FCC will be updated with value closest to real battery capacity.

Does it make a difference if you use Dell Power Command and set the battery charging to "Express Charging". Or does that only work with the original Dell chargers?
