Power plan? There is only balanced. Yeah I know cs struggles, but 430 in cinebench with a 15W usage, that's worse than a 6 yr old crap cpu hah :D this beast should deliver better

That is irrelevant and incorrect for the 9570. Because 9570 uses modern standby, there is just one power plan "balanced", and 90% of the settings of the plan are also hidden and handled by Windows. This is true for all connected standby / modern standby devices since Windows 8. The moment a device uses modern standby, the way the power plans work and are handled by Windows change. Most people dont know this and also all articles on the Internet are outdated, and never updated to this. Just if you deactivate modern standby and reboot, the normal power plans will become visible again and also all its settings.

Tragic  This modern standby feature crap is mostly intended for use with Smartphones, tablets or Microsoft's own Surface Book Throttlebooks. Force it on as default (If you meant this) is lame/stupid. Disgusting!

Have you booted with the AC plugged in? If I connect the AC after boot, my machine shows the same results.

I have it on high performance, you can change if you just left click the battery icon hahah
Running battery saver all the time on battery, not when the AC adapter is connected :)

So something else that is holding me back...

How do I save the changes (permanently) in the "Intel UHD-graphics Control Panel" ?

After bios update I have to change things in the panel, but changes are not saved and after reboot it is back to default. I can save it to a profile, but then I have to load this profile after each reboot.

My XPS15 must be broken or something...

My performance issues is srsly insane.

Just look at this, running stress test in CPU Z and MSI afterburner shows this on my cpu.

1700MHz clock speed, not never passin 55 Celcius as its only using 12W....

Running Cinebench gives me 430, at best 500! Can barely use programs like Phostshop or Adobe Illustrator, I CAN'T EVEN PLAY CS GO IN 1600X900 at lowest settings with more than 70-80 fps.

I have it set to max performance, I have the adapter connected and restarted with it plugged in. I have Dell power manager set to Max performance.

    What could it possibly be?

Well first of all I'll have you watch the language. Having said that, it's totally not clocking up. Do you run throttle stop or intel XTU? Maybe update the Dell Power Manager to see if that makes a difference.

WARNING DO NOT UPDATE TO BIOS 1.6!!!!

After all my performance issues I updated to the new bios to see if things would change.

Now my CPU is stuck at 798MHz! Apparently a common problem on 9550 and 9560 as well.

I tried unplug the battery for a minute, didn't work and Dell support is closed until Monday.

The new bios really screws your laptop

I do not have those issues with 1.6. You can try to do a bios reset or even downgrade to 1.5.0.

A reset of bios didn't work.

Downgraded back to 1.5 and my cpu is back to where it was before. Still performing issues, but at least it works over 798MHz and I can use the laptop for school work, such as word and excel.

Very enjoyable and professional show Douglas. I would encourage laptop enthusiasts to listen in. This is much like talk radio, so you can tune in whilst working on other stuff.

Doug has spent hundreds of hours tweaking the XPS and that expertise shows. He has a bunch of other laptops so lots of helpful comparative info is consolidated into the show.

I had another email talk, this time with an engineer at Dell. One good, or let's say, "maybe promising" news, the rest... not so much.

I asked him about modern standby issues/s3, dGPU "cold" clock issue and latency DPC issues. I mentioned a lot more, but he ignored these to comment on. I have to say, I wrote a really long email, mentioned all the issues, linked all the information I had, including this forums post, Reddit, ect. Mentioned how a TON of people have the same issues and are really unhappy, mentioned how a lot sold their 9570 and went for something else yadayadayada. Here is what he told me:

    1. modern standby/s3:

"For S3 sleep I can only confirm that this sleep mode is not supported by us. For problems with modern standby at least we would need to check in which way it is not reliable."

What is there to say? First, the machine's hardware does support S3 of course. Then, Dell sells these machines with Linux, and Linux uses S3, so where cant it be "officially supported"? What he really meant mostly is, "Microsoft doesnt want us to support S3 for Windows" and "we won't look into issues related to S3, even the laptop can do it". Then... what is there to say about "For problems with modern standby at least we would need to check in which way it is not reliable"... seriously? It sounds like, "hm, we at Dell are not aware of any problems with modern standby."...

    2. dGPU "cold" clock issue:

"Currently I’m working on the low GPU clock behavior and can confirm that Dell is working on a change. I recently tested a pre-release BIOS version addressing this behavior but the BIOS version still needs some improvements before it can be made available to our customers."

So hopefully, this issue will be "fixed" in the next bios update. I have to say, I feel not comfortable, that he mentioned how it didnt run "stable". Also, if Dell speaks about a fix, does that really mean it will be a fix the customer wants? I could easily see Dell introduce some bogus "fix", and it is totally not something I want. What if they introduce for example some bogus "fix", that the GPU clocks to max boost the first minutes to raise its temperature above the 48°c? That would "fix" the issue, right (...) ? But it would NOT be a solution I would WANT. I want it to work correctly even under 48°c in low load games, because this would keep the fans quiet. I dont want some "workaround" that it heats up the GPU.

The whole issues seem to be with this outsourced company, who is making the bioses for Dell. I can see these are some cheesy Chinese guys, who just dont have the willpower to focus on satisfying solutions.

    3. Latency issues:

"So far I’ve not heard about a Latency DPC issue and therefore cannot make any recommendations."

What else is there to say about this? So it seems engineering team at Dell isnt really working on fixing this (maybe cant fix it?), even their "boss" Frank tweeted otherwise now some MONTHS ago.

He was also so kind to say "As for the modern sleep issues I recommend you to contact support via Dell Community Forum." :)

@Eason Very nice video, I just jumped to the XPS part and watched/listened to it. You were mostly a bit nervous and therefore mixed up a few things, but in the end, the whole point was the right one. I think you said 40°C instead of 48°C for the cold clock bug, which is an important difference obviously, and also said the normal idle package power should be 1.5W-1.7W instead of 0.5W-0.7W.

The absurd thing about modern standby on the XPS 15 is, that from a logical point, it doesnt make any sense to use. Modern standby was made for devices like phones or tablets, so that they can get push notifications with an always-on connection, while "sleeping". This isnt implemented in the XPS 15. The Wifi chip / Intels current platform the XPS uses doesnt support it and will turn OFF the Wifi connection during modern standby. Now... the whole point of modern standby is broken. The machine just enters, or lets try, tries to enter, a lower power consumption state, but it never really sleeps. Where is the logic now to keep everything on? Cpu... usb devices, Bluetooth, ssd, ect. Everything is having power during modern standby on the XPS. Where with good old S3 sleep, just the RAM had power to hold its state. Make your own logical conclusion now what is better, why, and what can go wrong with modern standby. This also means btw that the laptop is basically on 24/7 365 days a year.

About the 74°C throttle issue. I think Dell / their bios company, doesnt know or understand, that, like spoken about in the podcast, Pascals "normal" working temperature is in this narrow critical temperature window, of 75-78°C. There is totally nothing about or critical about the GPU running at 77°C, and how it is designed with its high turbo boost clocks, it is actually normal. Now that Dell lowered this critical narrow point, this makes the whole thing not reliable anymore. As I see it, there is also no need to have it lowered.

@eucalyptus Your CPU seems to be stuck/capped at 14-17W for whatever reason. Post your ThrottleStop window under load and also the Limits Reasons window. Make sure to update everything, drivers, Window, ect if you just got it new. Make sure SpeedShift is working correctly, what value does TS show in the FIVR stats? Also, the value of 1706MHz is weird for the CPU, and it is actually the max turbo boost value for the GPU. Are you sure, that is not some kind of bug of AB, are you using the latest version? Double check with HWInfo. There is a bug with AB btw, and I advice you NOT to use the HW polling by AB. Click into the graph of AB and click "pause", and restart AB. IF you dont do this, there will be a permanent 10-15W idle drain on package power. Use AB just for undervolting the GPU via fan curve, and then if you want an stats overlay in your game, you have to use HwInfo next to RTSS.

Whoops! I didn't even realize I misspoke about the idle wattages. Definitely meant 0.5/0.7. I really hope by talking about these kinds of things, people will stop taking day 1 NDA reviews as a blessing to buy a product. Thank you for your efforts in trying to talk sense to Dell. I can imagine how trying that must be.

@ Eason What you said at one point in your video, and I think @ pressing mentioned it before is... and it actually makes me REALLY angry: All these "big" reviews of the XPS line, all these big Youtubers, they all prise the XPS since years. Giving it ratings in the 95-97%, "best laptop out there", "this is a beast", "this thing can game", "best support by Dell", "best keyboard", "most premium laptop"... and then I am like... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And I think. Are they all bought by Dell (did they always get a free sample to review)? Are they just not aware of these issues? Do they even know what they're talking about? Do they know, that they reach out to a lot of customers, and they mislead a lot of people into buying these products? And then also comes together, that Dell and maybe some other companies make the producte worse and worse after Day 1 reviews with bios updates. And THAT is, what makes me angry.

All these important issues the XPS line has (and the new ones of the 9570 like modern standby), you just find rarely in some forum posts mentioned by a few people. And then if you talk about the issues, you even get the typical nonsense comments by others like "maybe just you have these issues, I am happy with my XPS". Right...

And that is actually what I said before. Most XPS users are kinda just using this $2000 laptop for browsing the internet or doing some mild Word/Excel stuff. And then have no idea, the laptop has serious issues, with maybe more "exotic workload". But the irony is, it isnt even that exotic.

I actually have a friend who works for a big IT company, and they have a contract with Dell. They used the 9550 and then the 9560 for their people. And he always asks me to look onto his 9560 via TeamViewer, because something doesn't work or behaves weird. And he also told me how many complain they had with the 9560 line, especially in the first months of all the bluescreen issues. The sad thing was, how Dell replaced hundreds of 9560 machines for them, and the new ones all had the same issue. I told my friend to switch the Killer Card for an Intel one... and then the bluescreens were gone.

I cant see the 9570 actually be anything close to reliable for business costumers, who have no idea how to fix these issues by themselves and just want to rely on a working laptop. With modern standby? I see no chance this works out.

And Dell be so incompetent and ignorant about that? Maybe give the customer or business customers at least an option to switch back to S3, so it maybe.... maybe is at least reliable with that. But nope. Whoever is in charge at Dell for the XPS line needs to be replaced. Maybe that guy is too busy tweeting propaganda, instead of focusing with his team, and speak openly about these issues and how to solve them for the good of the customer.

Okay so, somehow I solved the performance issues I have been struggling with for a month. And in case somebody else is looking for a solution for the same problem you need Intel XTU, but Throttlestop too I think

I had these problems before I downloaded these programs. So somehow my computer locked itself to under-performance. May had come with drivers, but somehow it happened.

I am running -125mv in throttlestop and Intel XTU on Core and Cache. Also locked it to 3.8Ghz on all cores, not entirely stable on 3.9.

"Turbo Boost Max" TDP 56Watt was locked on 16Watt....... So once I set it to 56W it can now use more power. The "Turbo Boost Short Power Max" was already on 78W, but it could never reach 78W as it couldn't get pass 16W in the first place.

I am surprised this can happen... I am not a tech professional, not as much as you guys. But imagine someone buying this laptop without any knowledge at all... They would never be able to solve because Dell can't help you with this stuff as they don't have the knowledge or experience on the customer support to deal with this quite technical and advanced stuff.

The main problem trying to deal with XPS15 and all its problems is that I still was not able to find something that what obviously better. Do we have a clear candidate today as the XPS15 killer? ThinkPad X1E comes to mind but what I heard, it wasn't just all smiles either...

That said, Dells BIOSes seem to have gone from bad to worse last months. Does the Precision line have the same problems?

No. Youre not adviced to use XTU (which is buggy and sometimes lead to bluescreens) together with TS. Remove XTU and just use TS. I advice doing a clean Windows install. Was your laptop really new or refurbished?

Yes. Just follow https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell there are daily countless complains. I have to say, 99% of these complains are redundant and not justified as I see it, and the problems mostl always are on the "user side" to find. Sadly you have to know a certain amount, to deal with the Dell laptops. And most Dell customers dont have this knowledge, and then complain it running hot or whatever. My biggest concern is, that Dell listens to these people crying for more fans running, because they dont undervolt or have crap running on their devices, and then throttles the laptops even more.

The problem with Windows is, that you can easily mess it up, with everything, even something little like installing an anti virus product. To have these laptops run "decently" you have to literally have a certain amount of IT knowledge, and also "work together" with the laptop, and maintain it every day and also while using it.

I don't understand how Dell is able to fill their XPS 15s with so many stupid BIOS and configuration bugs, the funny thing is that these problems could be easily solved if we were able to flash an unlocked BIOS so we wouldn't need to rely on them taking ages to release a BIOS with a different thermal throttling value on the GPU. Even just letting the users tweak a few more things in the BIOS would be a nice move from Dell (although we can already use EFI shell to change many hidden settings but not everyone is into that).

Dell really needs to start getting their stuff together regarding BIOS and drivers issues, it isn't funny to see the same problems yearly on every XPS 15 refresh and having to pray to see them sorted out eventually.

@Garcia98 To be honest, I dont know why there are no hacked bios roms of the XPS ever made or tried to make. Anyone know if Dell bioses are based on one of the usual bios vendors like award, amibios ect, or are they proprietary (I guess the last, how bad they are)? If we had a hacked bios, which is configured via some EFI tool, it would make things way easier. Alter fan curves, edit DMI table, activate sleep, modify throttle temperatures, ect.

The XPS 15 use an InsydeH2O BIOS, unlocking it is fairly simple but since Dell locks down BIOS flashing we can't flash any modified BIOS (unless a major vulnerability was found).

The most we can do is use an EFI shell to change some settings as is explained here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/tutorial-xps-15-9550-9550-bios-advanced-options.810307/

In my XPS 9550 that has allowed me to overclock the RAM, enable SpeedShift, change DPTF settings and more but since I don't own a 9570 (or have a 9570 BIOS) I don't know what settings might be available to you.

@maffle "Your CPU seems to be stuck/capped at 14-17W for whatever reason. Use AB just for undervolting the GPU via fan curve, and then if you want an stats overlay in your game, you have to use HwInfo next to RTSS."

Spot on! And yes, you are right about the package drain too. Just noticed after I solved the first issue. Noticed now after I read your post.

Constantly draining 15W on package. I did what you said.

Open AB, pause monitors. Close and open again. Now IDLE goes way below 10-15W. THANK YOU!!!!! Would never have noticed or known about it without you mentioning it. The 15W drain actually forced my CPU to do 3.7Ghz in idle....... (locked it in at 3.7GHz now to keep it stable under load).

Quick question, do I need AB open (start with windows) all the time to have it load my GPU Core Voltage curve?? I have adjusted my curve after something I saw on the internet.

Remember, my performance issues (the TDP Lockdown on 15W) appeared and came before I ever had installed Msi AB, Throttlestop or Intel XTU! It came after a month's regular usage of the laptop. Schoolwork and some Pubg/cs go gaming. No weird programs installed or what so ever. Intel XTU/Throttlestop was the only solution to get unlock the TDP....

How it happened and why is really weird. Imaging it happen to someone else without them knowing or knowing how to solve it.

@eucalyptus If you do it properly and have nothing else running, and also didnt mess up anything else, idle package power should be 0.5W not 10W, even with AB running but only if the monitoring is paused. For monitoring in-game, use HwInfo64 to pass data to the RTSS. I advise to activate dGPU vcore monitoring via HwInfo, to make sure the clock curve and therefore the undervolt work correctly. There is another bug with AB, that the clock curve gets shifted/reset sometimes. To make sure that this is not the case, use HwInfo to monitor dGPU vcore in-game that it uses the wanted 0.875V. If you notice it goes over 0.875V (default is 1V at 1706MHz), you have to alt+tab out of the game, look into AB press ctrl+f and youll see, that the clock curve got altered. You have to apply the profile again (toggle back and forth), then switch back into the game, and then it should work. There is no reason to close AB, but I have not tested it actually. Not sure if the clock profile gets reset maybe every x seconds by the Nvidia driver. You have set an undervolt of 0.850V which might be a bit too aggressive for 1700MHz but you have to test that. Mine looks like this
    [IMG]
It is important, that the curve is flat from the start value of the max undervolt to the end.

Overclocking the memory from its default of 3500MHz doesnt make much sense in my opinion btw, because the 1050ti is crippled with a 128bit memory interface. You can easily set a +500MHz overclock (these memory chips mostly even work up to 4500MHz-5000MHz), but it doesnt give any advantage really with the 1050ti.

I advice to deactivate autorun of AB, just start it before you want to game. Same for HwInfo. And close it afterwards.

Hello everyone, i don't know if someone asked this before but i have some problems with my XPS 9570 (4K, i7 8750H, 16gb RAM/512GB SSD)
Firefox is really laggy at 4K resolution, with both Intel HD 630 and GTX 1050Ti. At FHD resolution everything seems to be better but i can't figure out what my laptop behaves like this. Also, other apps lime Spotify are laggy when i scroll vertically. This thing are "lightier" at FHD res.
All drivers and system updates are up to date. Disabling hw acceleration in some apps does not fix the performance issues.
    Any suggestion?

@Stefan Tanasa The XPS has lots of issues, including latency and lag problems with 4k, mostly because Windows 10 DPI scaling is too inefficient, but performance issues in Chrome or Firefox I dont have any. Can you give an example where things get "laggy" for you with Firefox? Which website, do you use any addons, just after opening the page or after longer scrolling. Be aware that the scrolling of Firefox feels really "laggy" by default. To optimize this, you have to disable "smooth scrolling":
And also open about:config and set:
    mousewheel.default.delta_multiplier_y to 200

Also go to system control, system, performance, effects and deactivate mostly everything but (disable all animation blending options, one of them effects browser scroll speed too):
Are you really on latest Windows 10 1809? It got a bit better with 1809 actually. I also advise to set DPI scaling to 200% instead of 250%, that helps a little bit too.

    Hello, thanks for your reply.
For example, if I open sites like tomshw.com or xda developers, vertical scroll gets laggy.
The only addon I have is adBlock for Youtubs.
I have no issues with site's opening whitch is really fast, the only weird thing is the scroll.
I will do what you said in the message above later on, thank you for your advices
One thing I noticed, as I said, is that at FHD resolution things gets obviously better.
At 4K resolution I have lags also with apps like Spotify (if I have a Playlist with for example 100 songs, scrolling between them is embarrassingly laggy).
This appens also with Steam and other apps
At FHD lags are still there but less noticeable.
I really don't know what to do, this laptop is supposed to be better than my tower pc (i7 4790K, 16GB DDR3 and 120GB 840 EVO SSD)

@Stefan Tanasa do all the steps I suggested and do they correctly (I dont know the English names of the visual effect settings, it should be obvious though which they are), that should already help to boost scrolling in Firefox but also in UWP Windows apps. That Steam is terrible slow and laggy is normal, it is just terribly programmed. You can fix this a little bit, by deactivating HW acceleration in Steam and restart it. All the examples you gave are separate issues and need separate workarounds. I can confirm though every one of them, which I noticed too. I would think that the Spotify app is also badly programmed or not properly optimized for 4k. The UHD630 GPU though is also as I see it too weak for 4k animations, even little tasks like Windows animations. Intel and MS made it a bit better over the past 1-2 years, but maybe just about 30%. Then also make sure through TS, that your CPU actually works correctly clockwise and with Turbo Boost. I have to say that the laptop wont ever be faster than you desktop. I still have an 3770 in my Desktop and it is just about 50% faster in the "feeling" of using Windows. That's mostly because of the energy savings of the laptop CPU. But I also think that the XPS just has some weird issue, making it feel "laggy" and not snappy, especially if it has a 4k display. There is a long debate about it in the Intel forums, but it was closed by Intel because they said there is nothing on their end.

@maffle, if you add "L" to the end of your images before the .png/.jpg you can make your images more reasonably sized. I have resized them for you. Please refrain from posting huge images on the forum as not everyone has 4k.

@custom90gt I totally dont think that is my "job" and bad programming of the forum. It has to do this by itself and not me. Every proper community forum does this automatically and has a fixed percentage or width size for embedded images. A proper forum shows a fixed/resized image and when you click on it the original but also properly scaled. Because it is not uploaded images but linked, it is not any of the forums business what the source is. Feel free to make in intern bug report for your devs, so that the zoomed out image when you click on it is properly scaled and is not shifted out of the frame, which it does right now and is totally a bug.

As you can see it is broken for me too on a 4k display: https://i.imgur.com/WyJVzJD.jpg

That was obviously not the 100% scaled image. The forum messes it up, and that is a bug / bad optimization.

Another doubt is about temperatures. Somstimes my XPS gets really hot while encoding. I also got temperatures over 80 Celsius. I don't think this is normal, isn't it?

Mine reaches 97°C after 2 seconds even with -140mV undervolt. 80°C is incredible low under full load. Yes, most people on here are using TS.

I tried figuring out with some settings here and there but I noticed some weird things.
First of all, by default my CPU nearly ever uses the TurboBoost. Even if under load it stays at 2.2 GHz but I think this is because of temperatures. I get 66-70 C under a Cinebench test but I get a score of 660 which is awful.
I noticed that by default, Turbo settings (in TPL section) are :
Turbo Boost Power Max : 56W
Turbo Boost Short Power Max: 90W
    Turbo Time Limit : 28S

I also saw that disabling Intel Speed Step and enabling Speed Shift "bypasses" thermal limits but temperatures are really high, over 85 degrees (i think thats because of the high power absorption 56W) but performance is great (over 1230cb in Cinebench)
Could you (or anyone that experienced with this) explain me how to set up the program?
    Am I missing something?

@maffle TS sadly won't unlock the extra power. I still have the same issue with my laptop being locked down on power at 13W ....... Ran CPU-Z stress test and it is still stuck.

That is with ONLY TS open.

THE ONLY way for me to unlock it is with Intel. But listen to this, with XTU it is still locked when the settings are 56W on boost. But if I move the slider to 56.25W [apply] and then move it back to 56 and apply again, the it will unlock all the power...

But when I do that, I have to re-install my Nvidia drivers all the time as CS GO and any application says "this application has been blocked from using graphics hardware".

So something is blocking me from using power........Please Dell do something.

I can not do fresh-install as I have so much stuff, so many programs I don't want to lose. Do you think a "windows install keep all your files and programs" would help?

90W? Holy damn. Mine is at 78, and other users too I think. And you still get lower temps than me.... Mine is at 97-99C with -130mv undervolt hahah

1230 score?? I get 1137 at best....How can it differ so much. I've seen some forums with Acer and Razer laptops doing around and past 1250 with the 8750H.

Could you share your TS configuration so I can compare with mine? Just to be sure I'm not messing up things.
As I could see, power absorption in about 56-60W under load and temps about 80-86 Celsius.
Also, do you have SpeedShift enabled from BIOS?
Sorry, I'm not new to Overclocking (I have my 4790K at 4.8/1.25) but I'm new to TS environment

My config won't help much... I had speedstep enabled, just disabled it, didn't realize I had it on.

Do you know is what "clamp" in TPL is supposed to do? I did not found anything in Internet

Those are my settings for normal usage
    (See attachments)
The only doubt I have is about Turbo Power Limits, i think 56W are too much for our XPS so i reduced it to 44 (seeing it's TDP on Intel's website)
    But I don't know if I'm wrong
