Yeah even with a good GPU/CPU undervolt my GPU ended up throttling to <1GHz due to the 74C setpoint when gaming in Far Cry 5.

For everything else the XPS was a great laptop. Just about everything is superior to my X1 Extreme aside from keyboard/second NVMe slot.

@custom90gt I totally agree with what you are saying. I don't have a problem with it because I don't game but I guess that 3C reduction made a lot of difference for gamers.
Were you hitting the threshold even when disabling turbo for the CPU?

What will most use the GPU for if not gaming? GPU acceleration with Premiere Pro?

    CAD?

    Stuff like that?

Yeah video encoding and solid modeling are my main uses for the GPU and they don't get it close to hot...

@abujafar, I've never disabled turbo on a CPU in order to play games. I don't game on the laptop much (since the desktop has a 2080ti), and I hate the thought of having to gimp one component in order to have another one work at its rated speed. If I were to do it though, I would just limit the TDP going to it so it could still boost up a fair amount.

Sure. I love my X1 but also my XPS.

Things I like about the XPS more than the X1:
Screen is much brighter and better colors even after calibration.
Touchpad is better on XPS but I do use the trackpoint all the time on the X1.
Build is much better, feels a lot more solid.
    Battery life is unmatched.
CPU operates at higher clocks unless you edit TDP settings on X1.
Fans are less annoying on the XPS unless you remove the mesh on the X1.
Smaller build, fits into my 14" laptop case with ease.

Things I like more about the X1:
    Much better keyboard.
    Trackpoint.
    Dual NVMe slots.
Lenovo drivers seem to be better.
    No 74C GPU throttle setpoint.

Obviously there are trade offs between the two. I sold my XPS until Dell figures out how to fix their bios. If I could get this OP15's battery life to the 7-8 hour range then I'd probably sell the X1 as well...

Lisa from mobile tech reviews has similar experiences although she reviewed the 4k versions:

Anyone know why the XPS 15 9570 is so much cheaper from Amazon and Best Buy than Dell's website? The XPS 13 is cheaper too. The only thing I can see is maybe warranty/support contract.

The difference is as much as $500.

    Thanks!

    Cheers,
    Rich

When repasting my xps during Christmas i made a quick compare and it appears that difference between 1.2.2 and 1.3 bios (the one with 75C { not 74} temp limit and 78C temp limit) is almost impossible to notice. So it should not be a deal breaker.

Here are 3d mark results before and after the upgrade (both after repasting)
    https://imgur.com/a/bSPKDHZ

btw, it appears that after repasting fans are more steady. It light web brwosing on battery they are quiet and comes when they need to. When on AC they are on but on lowest possible mode. Its not perfect (they shout be silent) but at least they dont go on and off constantly.

One more thing, maybe someone knows something about it. This happened to me when my dell was completely new, 10 mins after unboxing and yesterday. I have stock killer card. Next day (after normal day of work) I sat by the computer turn it on and when system was ready to work mi wifi does not work. I switched to windows from linux. Same here. Both systems couldn't see network card as well as BT. In bios wifi/bt was on. I turned of my dell, connected to Dell docking station with usb c and booted and wifi was working again. wtf?!
Do you know what is going on? And what to do if it happens when I don't have my docking station with me?

So this Dell "engineer" is swearing that the 1.7.0 fixed the bios throttle set point. Can someone install it for me and reset the bios to system defaults and then check GPU-Z to see what the throttling set point is?

    @abujafar, if you don't mind ;)

    @custom90gt

    GPU-Z still reports 75C.
I tried both "reset to BIOS defaults" and "reset to Factory defaults" (what's the difference BTW?)

Seriously, I feel that the XPS15 is going from bad to worse, nothing seems to improve and much seem to get worse. But besides that, I am quite happy with it :D

Sorry can't check... wasn't this one supposed to fix GPU throttling at low temperatures?
While the decrease from 78 to 74-75 was most likely deliberate, because they got too many fried laptops to service? (Of course, not saying that I think this is a good choice)

Yes it was supposed to fix the low temp throttling. The thing is the Dell engineer swears it fixed both of the issues. I typed up a nice few paragraph email back to them basically telling them they are as incompetent as the day is long and that I will be returning the 3 orders for other customers (which I did). They would never notice the throttling set point, but it's the principle of it. I don't think the 3 degrees would really make a difference in the amount of dead 1050ti's they see, but who knows why the Dell does what the Dell does.

I reported the fan issues with bios 1.7.0 regarding the dGPU polls, it said a Dell customer person would answer in 1-2 work days. Took 1 week to answer, even I have Pro service.

I explained as detailed as possible the issue. 3 Days later this guy wrote back, that I should do the usual crap like copy over Dell scan tool results if anything reported bla bla bla. I told him, that is not necessary and when I revert back to bios 1.6.0, the issues are gone, and present again if upgrading to 1.7.0.

Two days later he said, "great, glad he could help me", that then "bios 1.7.0 wouldn't be recommend to use" and asked "if there is anything else he could help me with"...

I asked for this ticket to stay open and to please report it as a bug to the internal dev team, because I want feedback on how the status of fixing this issue goes on. 2 days later he wrote back, that he cant do that, he reported the "issue" to his direct supervisor and asked again "if there is anything else he could help me with"...

    I hate Dell.

Hahaha sorry, but this is the exact experience I have been facing for months ...

After 5 days of struggling with pickup, my xps is finally shipped for good today. 7 days until I get my refund they said.

The knowledge of this forum is a MILLION years than any personell at Dell customer support and development team.

I am probably not alone with the feeling that the XPS 15 is an abandoned ship... They only want to sell for quick money and don't care about the rest. Probably only spending time and development cash on a new model to be the new cashcow

I recall folks reporting first Ambient 120+ and freezing/restarting before, I guess by reducing the GPU throttling temperature the overall power draw under load and overall temperatures do decrease... Can't be done without hurting the performance if they can't fix cooling in the first place. It would be possible to set a threshold elsewhere that wouldn't hurt as much if one improved cooling on his own, but obviously they don't care.
Remarkably they even changed the VRMs on the new motherboard without saying anything... but cooling them seems still too much to ask, though seen in the 9575.

Updated | Dell resolves the XPS 15 9570 NVIDIA GPU issue with BIOS 1.7
    [IMG]
Dell unexpectedly released BIOS 1.7 for the XPS 15 9570 last week. (Image Source: Dell)
XPS 15 9570 owners rejoice. We can confirm that Dell has finally fixed the NVIDIA GPU issue that has been plaguing some 9570 laptops for months with BIOS 1.7. Unfortunately, the update has introduced some fan peculiarities though.
Update: Dell has commented on the fan behaviour in BIOS 1.7.

"it is normal for the fan to run even before reaching the temperature threshold. This has been verified by our product engineering team. This should not affect the functionality of the computer. The system behavior is as per the BIOS instructions."

Hahhahahahahhaha yup, that is Dell. It is a functioning computer, why change anything, it starts, you can surf the web, we see nothing wrong - Dell in a nutshell.

Can just say that I got myself a MSI P65 Creator with 1070, and the S3 sleep works like a charm! Fan controls are also crazy good. I can let the laptop hit 80 degrees before starting the fans... So for most part its dead silent.

I am done. THIS IS NOT NORMAL OR "WORKING AS INTENDED":

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/w9eouyny81ctd9h/dgputriggersfans.mp4?dl=0

    Fans/dGPU are off.
Opening Task manager (or other apps which access dGPU for <= 1 second).
dGPU is on for half a second.
Fans go on for 7-9 seconds
    Closing Task Manager.
dGPU is on for half a second.
Fans go on for 7-9 seconds.

ALL OVER WINDOWS. Opening (or closing) whatever short dGPU related (task manager, Nvidia panel, Ms Edge, MSI AB, HwInfo, right clicking in Windows Explorer on EXE). NOT TEMPERATUR RELATED.

I recall someone reported improvement in this fans behaviour with a workaround, changing the performance mode somewhere in NVidia Control panel, from sth like max to sth like adaptive or optimized. Or was it maybe the power profile...

@J99 No, I use HwInfo right now. Be aware it just works with <= 1.6.0, 1.7.0 breaks it (when dGPU poll happens). Yes, crappy Dell being crappy just implemented 3 fan speeds (25, 50 100 I guess), no PWM.

Nice one Eucaly, pleased for you. I did the same. :)

If you keep buying these machines like this they'll keep makin' 'em like this. Vote with your £/$.

A few minor tweaks should be all thats needed to get an expensive laptop to run as advertised, not extra parts and software IMHO.

Problem is, that the majority of the XPS buyers have no idea about these issues and think they bought a premium laptop. Also all major Youtubers advertise the XPS every year in a row as the "best laptop" "premium" ect. None of them ever mention the problems, mostly arent even aware about them, or they get a free laptop from Dell to advertise.

Then there are the companies who buy laptops from Dell. I have a friend working for a IT company, and they have a contract with Dell. The last unit they had was the 9560, and they had tons of issues with it with bluescreens. They returned them like a couple of times, had Dell replace the motherboard and so on. I just looked onto a 9560 from my friend via Teamviewer, and could identify the issue in a matter of minutes, bluescreens caused by the Killer wifi driver. Dell is just incompetent, or lets say the management. Little issues like this could easily be fixed. Changing contract from Killer to Intel, coil whine could be fixed with maybe 10cent better coils, driver issues too by testing, and so on. The XPS is good from the idea, but then little things ruin it, and the worst is, they are fixable. But Dell doesnt care. Then there is this incompetent outsourced company who makes the bios for their laptops...

Sadly I cant ask for a refund for my 9570. I have it since September 2018.

I paid for mine in July and got it in August. You can still get a refund :) If there are issues and they change motherboard 3 times, the 4th time the option is to get your money back :)

And yes, I HATE all these stupid youtubers and PC magazine websites praising not only Dell XPS, but a bunch of laptops, MSI included, to be "the best laptop"...."oh wow best laptop of the year"...."oh wow this model is so great". No, they are not great, they never ever say anything about the issues. Even she from 'MobileTechReview' which some say are one of the best on youtube says things like "oh they had some issues before but it's all good now, the XPS is a great machine and working just fine".

No wonder everyone is buying these laptops, myself included, when people lie about the performance/true story. Dave Lee from Dave2D is great on youtube, but he also praises every single laptop he touches and never says anything about issues.

It has been a while since we had a bluescreen issue with our drivers. That said, if your friend's company managed updates on the machine, they may have been using outdated drivers, in which case that would be out of your friend's hands. For anyone else, if you have bluescreen errors with our drivers, first follow our clean-install guide here - https://www.killernetworking.com/ki...q/105-clean-install-the-killer-control-center - and, if that doesn't resolve the issue, please contact us here - https://www.killernetworking.com/killersupport/contact - so that we can help troubleshoot the issue. I don't want any users out there having bluescreens with our drivers!

Recently I have returned two 9570. First one had visible backlight bleeding in the bottom left and right corner, and terrible coil whine. The second one had exactly the same backlight bleeding, less coil whine, but also one of the fans gave a high pitched pulsating sound, not very noticeable at first but disturbing in the longer period. The thermals were ok for me. I could live with the screen as the bleeding was visible only when the background was black, but the noises were too much. Perhaps I am sensitive to the high pitched sounds. Now I have to chose if I want another 9570 or to look for a different laptop. I liked thinkpads t480/t580 but they have inferior processor and graphics.

I try to keep an eye on this thread to check if the issues of this laptop have been resolved in any way. Unfortunately, it seems that some new issues have arisen since I returned this machine last summer. Unfortunately, I cannot think of a good alternative in this product category. I ran into issues with the Thinkpad X1 Extreme too, when I had that machine. Razer has their own problems and the extra cost for GPU power I don't need is not ideal. I'm likely waiting for a Dell XPS 15 refresh, in the hopes that maybe some of these flaws, including the audio crackling, which is more bothersome for me than performance throttling, can be resolved. Either that or Dell fixing their problems with this current model, including audio and latency problems, and offering a deep discount too.

Despite the amount of negativity this thread has, I had to (Yes) had to buy the 9570, its the only thing out there that fits my definition of a premium and fast notebook.

Took it straight for drivers and bios updates, along with Windows 10 Build 1809 update, and then all OS updates, after that installed all of my Apps and Office, configured Windows Hello and all settings, 1809 is great by the way!

Cleaned the murder that took place on my SSD after all of the above, and reclaimed exactly 29.4GB in the process, then trimmed it!

Installed FarCry Primal, FarCry 5, Need for Speed Payback, and took all of them for about 2 hours spin, rested of course in between the games! But during my several gaming sessions in the past 10 days, I have not seen ANY of the complaints that you guys are talking about.

    Bios is 1.7.0 System Specs are 8750H / 1TB Samsung NVMe SSD / 32GB RAM / 4K version

Used ONLY official Dell drivers off the Dell support website, yes older but I don't give a rats' @ss as long as they work.

Using ThrottleStop 8.7.0.6 and only undervolting CPU/Cache to -135 mV. All is Gold, No Crazy fan spins, No coil whine, No throttling or slowing down on all games, and what scared me the most was the talk about (GFX polling and/or slows down when using file explorer, or Task Manager, thank God, I do not have any hints of that, I also can't hear the fans whatsoever when I'm not gaming, using Chrome with 35+ tabs along with Spotify App, nothing, Nada! just kicks in when I'm encoding some Videos or converting a bunch of other media types.

Slows down in File explorer were there, but as soon as I have gotten rid of OneDrive, all is back to normal, just remember to get rid of the dreaded thing, by either disabling it or nuking it out of existence!

Killer card is rock solid, no disconnections and never BSOD.

Build Quality is top notch, no misaligned LCD, also there is no backlight-bleed, no squeaky keyboard and I have no random Spin ups/downs coming from the fan, that would have been very irritating indeed!

Could it be that I'm just lucky? Nope! never was, why now ;)

This is my (OWN) take, does not invalidate others'

I agree, all of them have their own weaknesses and strengths.

I think the Dell is currently the best $/perf in this category (in the US) and it still comes with a couple of it's advantages. The XPS 15 is still among the smallest of the bunch and has the largest battery, along with decent power saving optimizations (which may have unwanted side effects).

I lot of me still wants the XPS15, though I'm still playing the game of wait-n-see come late Summer.

All Dell XPS 9570 Laptops are affected by Coil Wine. Bios 1.7.0 is a mess with fans control issue ( also random spins on Windows 10) and color saturation and they didn't resolve the 74C degree of throttling point in the 1050Ti graphic card, you can read all the opinions of members in this forum and also in the official DELL forum. The official DELL graphic drivers are outdated and if you use them the Graphic Control Panels are missing ( both NVDIA and INTEL). All the 9570 are affected by crackling and popping audio and sound issues, I could continue all the day but i don't want, you can read any posts around forums and see that all these issues are real but I am pretty sure that if you had no one of these issues then:

    1) You work for DELL
    2) You have not a DELL XPS 9570

Sorry but I can't believe that "you have not seen ANY of the complaints that we guys are talking about".

    @idark77

    1. is hilarious, actually, I work for Hewlett Packard Enterprise, called "DXC" now 2. Why would anyone lie, specially a long time forum member 3. just upgraded from 9560 and I'm really loving my new 9570.

Let me add some teaing facts, and I won't repeat my findings from my previous post.

I happen to be a musician and use DAW for compositions, and latency is a deadly factor while using any DAW solution, well, what do you know, I have no latency issues, and certainly no popping or crackling issues, got my machine from Costco in California 1 month back, been doing great, and if any of those complaints were happening, I would certainly return it, could it be a different patch?

Both Dell Drivers installed and both have their respective control panel in the right-click menu btw as we speak, I actually will remove them from the registry, why would I want them here?

Colors look great on the 4K, again, Bios is 1.7.0 and coming from the 9560 with an FHD, I'm loving the new LCD.

3 games played without lag or felt-throttle, maybe it's happening but I'm not being affected while gaming, good call regarding disabling Turbo while gaming btw like someone said, this way at least there is thermal headroom for the system, again, this is NOT a gaming machine afterall, but it's very much capable to do that! It better be for a $2500+ device!

Would you mind running latencymon and uploading some screenshots?

@maffle thanks for your reply. At 25, 50 and 100% what are your fans RPM?

@Willy330Ci Sorry but I can’t believe it... or maybe you have the only full working 9570 machine and We all are unlucky.
    Good for you.

Yes. He has the one only magical working 9570 out there. Frank Azor brought it personallly to his doorstep. Reviews like that is what I meant with the ordinary XPS buyer have no idea, what these problems are (how they work, how to trigger, how they manifest, what they cause), and arent aware about them. Ignorance is bliss I guess.

@therock003 He isnt talking about ANY of the real issues (isnt aware about them mostly), just about bogus problems. Dave is a nice guy but he is is just a "content creator", he should use his overpriced non repairable scam Apple products.

@J99 I just use "2100" and "5000". Just test it, I think the fans will use the value if youre close to the 25% 50% 100%. You cant give them discrete values, because it is not PWM.

Hi Idark77, my 9570 have no coil wine, and I promise you, I am very sensitive to these things.

Hi Willy, I am very interested in the part you mention about not experiencing any latency. Could you please run LatencyMon for 5 minutes and post screenshots of the 'main' page and the 'drivers' page. That would be a huge help! Thanks!

Also, what audio interface are you using? if it is the internal realtek one, what drivers and what buffersize?

    Thanks again.

@annabel_shanderin You dont need his results, he has latency issues too. I am still in contact with a dev guy from Dell btw on Twitter about the DPC latency issue. He gave me some more infos on this. After I hinted him to some clues what is causing the latency issues, he confirmed that it is actually the cause of it and even thanked me for the hint, which helped to identify the cause more. The latency issues are, as already theorized about, caused by badly programmed EC/SMM. He said Dell confirmed this and that too many sensor readings cause too many hardware interrupts. So Dell knows where to look, though there is no promise they can solve it, without re-writing the entire bad EC/SMM.
