    Any temps for i5-2410m, GT 525m, 4gb ?

Not at 100% load or anything... just email, watching movies/netflix, youtube, very light gaming.

    90 C sounds scary !!!

90C is not scaring. outside will never get that hot.
Temps are on the inside of the chips. I guess cooling system wil get close to 60 but not a lot higher.

Dont forget the system is measuring the inside of the chips. This is the place where all the magic happens.

it would be better to know the temp at the fan.

Also the system is protected against overload. Thats where the throttling kicks in. Thats also the reason why it can go to the max temp of 100C.

But intel would say it can go to 100C max. But it wouldn't surprise me if it can get above 100 easily without breaking down. The 100C is just a limit to protect from breaking on all cores.

Well i read a review on Anandtech and it seems that they never found such throttling. They have reported that the laptop did actually turbo boosted till 3.3-3.4 Ghz. I guess they have posted the screenshot of that aswell.

What temps are people getting with the i7-2630qm during "regular" use ?

Web browsing, email, word, excel etc...

    Thanks

I was just using my loaner Vostro (core 2 duo T5270, integrated gpu 965 express chipset, 2 gb RAM, and decided to see what temps I was getting doing the normal day to day stuff...

    Example...

-One window open, three tabs open, one for each email account... chatting and sending work email. another tab open with a youtube video playing and or on pause depending. 8 other tabs open - shopping and research...
    -Google SketchUp 8 running.
    -A word document open
    -Excel document open
    -Netflix movie playing/on pause depending.
-CPUID Hardware Monitor doing it's thing...

Been doing this for the last three hours straight and both core temps have stayed between 40 C and 45 C.

I know this is nowhere near 100% cpu/gpu usage.
Someone previously posted i7-2xxxQM (i forget which model) temps of 65 C or so with just the browser open. That's pretty good.
What temps should I expect while doing the stuff I normally do from the i7-2630QM, 2720QM etc... 65 C and higher I imagine ?

It''s better than that. The first pic is my new L502X w/i7-2720QM with one browser window and my e-mail open. Been sitting in my recliner with the L502X on my lap surfing the net, posting videos to facebook and writing some e-mails for the past two hours and still have %80 battery left.

The second pic includes CPU-Z and a wmv movie playing. When the screen capture was done, the movie had been playing for just under three minutes. Note the cpu speed and voltage in cpu-z.

    NP,
I think people are really getting hung up on the %100 load temps. It should be pointed out that this is a %100 load on the cpu and gpu. When I only load up the cpu I see temps in the low 80's, it's not until the gpu is thrown into the mix that the temps hit the 90's.

The reality is this cpu rarely breaks a sweat with everyday tasks, as evidenced by the cpu in my last post staying at 800Mhz and 0.78v despite playing a wmv movie and having the browser and email open.

    I have a question.

Would it be possible to use HW Monitor Pros PWM control option to adjust the fan speed / default fan speed ? To turn on at a lower temperature ? Or maybe to just have the fan always on ?

That's good to know Acrux, and your setup is an i7 quad correct ?

I was planning on getting the i5-2410m... wasn't sure if there would be any big difference in the thermals it being an i5 and only having the two cores.

    Dell is having a weekend sale... an i7 quad, 640gb hd, 6gb ram, gt525m, 1080p display... for $30 more than the i5, 500gb, 4gb, gt525m, 1080p setup I was considering. hmm

B3 from the following (command prompt)

    Code:

Hello there Guys and Girls :)

I must say im VERY tempted to go with L502x i7 2620 editio, fullhd rbgled, nvida 540. But my fear is growing with same speed as this topic expands :)

    My questions:
    1) is this kind of configuration silent during normal usage:
    - 10-15 tabs in summary: chrome, ie, ietester, firefox
    - photoshop cs5 (webdesign, so not that much intense usage)
    - foobar2000 / itunes with music

    2) Let's assume, during longer Bad Company 2 gaming round i got temperatures around 85-90C. Does cooling fans run like crazy loud or they turn on, cool down and then go off (or at least 50% of max speed or smth).

    3) I need L502x for amazing FullHD B-RGLED screen and great inside. But im worried of it's loudness. Is it possible, that a bit more expensive Latitude E6520 / E6420 will be cooler and stiller ?

I can speak only from my previous history because I have no basis for what you consider "loud".

Well, the hard drive is kind of loud (this is the first 7200RPM laptop drive I've had), but the fans don't kick on under normal usage. It is far less noisy than my Dell D620.

The fans are pretty quiet, about the same as my MacBook pro. They do run constantly while gaming, though.

    It is possible, but unlikely.

I think you should look into getting an i3 2310M processor (I don't see that Dell currently offers it, though). It runs at a lower clock rate and does not
include Turbo Boost. Barring that, find the slowest dual core option and disable Turbo Boost in the BIOS.

It's not silent, no. Fan at low level comes on from time to time when browsing and when thunderbird is syncing a folder of emails. At 1m it wasnt loud enough to register on a sound pressure meter on my N1 but is audible in an otherwise silent room in a quiet town. I'm determined that iTunes will not touch this laptop so dont know about that. Playing vimeo 'HD' videos full screen didnt make the fan run full time, or even make it consistently run at all (ie sometimes while playing it comes on for a bit, other times not at all)

At that temp they run at ~4800 rpm and are definitely audible. They dont scream or whine but there is a quantity of hot air moving. At that temp (I was running benchmark tools) the fan wasn't cycling, which isn't too surprising! Would probably be distracting if there's no other sound in the room but maybe not if there is music or game sounds. Not hot at all on the outside of the chassis.

Would be weird if the fan was at 50% while things were at 90C though, no? When would they run full steam, if 90C was half?

Thanks all for Your answers. Today I was checking L501x (for overall build quality, weight, form factor) and i must say it feels heavy, it feels durable but dang... it's huge. Keyboards and touchpad felt also very comfortable.

The "thing" is, that in Poland custom configurations cost at least 15% more than in other official Dell partner :\ The other "thing" is that at this Dell partner only i7 2620 will be equipped with FullHD B-RGLED screen (and this is for me bigges PRO L502x).

I still have at around 10 days to decide. After this short period of time i will have to buy something. It's important for me to wisely spend money, because:
    - it's my hard earned money
    - it's my first laptop "at my own" not as a regular employee :)
    - for a long time it will be the only computer i will have

I think i will have to check this topic regulary :)

(l702x owner but co-opting this thread for relevance)

for some reason, my cpu (2720qm) is posting scores in the high 90s when running dragon age origins:

note that the gpu is running mighty cool regardless. still, yikes! under other games that are more gpu intensive, like just cause 2 and divinity 2, core temps never got higher than 85ish. is this normal for sb processors?

The CPU and the GPU share the heatsink and exhaust fan. It sounds like when they are both stressed, the cooling system becomes unable to vent off all the heat. It can probably handle one or the other independently but not both simultaneously.

Of course it can, it's manufactured at a smaller transistor size and has some architectural differences to Clarksfield. Same reason why the L502x can be sold with 90W PSU where the 1645 needed 130W to work properly.

But the m1530 before it used a 90W PSU. It's not as simple as that. Smaller architecture, yes, but they use that shrink to pack a whole lot more into the same space.

Well, it uses less power so it is more efficient. If the i7-720qm can only go 2 hrs on the 6 cell but the 2630qm at higher speeds can last 3+ hrs I assume it uses less energy per unit of work. That's what we're debating, right? Energy consumed per unit of work. The SB chips are supposed to be more efficient at that. I also see higher temps on the GPU side. My 5730 idles at < 50 degrees and with Furmark running it goes up to 68 degrees. I see that the 525M/540M hits high 80s and even 90? Something is not right.

p.s. Can someone with the L502x in their hands already post some temps at idle with just a simple app open like a browser or Word? I want to compare idle temps with the 1645. Both CPU and GPU please.

    Thanks

Just ordered one 2 days ago (USA). It lists a 90W in the parts manifest.

p.s. Intel lists the TDP on both the i7-720qm and the 2630qm as 45W but the 2630qm includes the integrated video in that figure. So, the cpu alone has a lower TDP (by how much, I can't tell).

This is what you originally said. No mention about work, force, duration, etc.

Temps at idle are high 40's to low 50's. GPU temp at idle is low 40's. Please remember that your processor and mine can not be compared. They are as different as an intel and an amd. Only tests such as overall temps and benchmarks can be compared, but that doesn't mean squat, as these run completely different on the same tasks.

In my country (Italy) all XPS15 are sold with 130W PSU, including i3 2310M with GT525M version.

For USA, 1GB VRAM gets 90w, while 2GB VRAM gets 130w.

I don't think anyone but Intel knows what this is, and I don't see how anyone but Intel would care. If you are still trying to compare those two processors, just drop it and enjoy your new xps.

p.s. You should have gone for the i7-2720QM

I am kind of having cold feet/contemplating cancelling the order. I am not sure how the L502x will feel compared to my 1645 SXPS. I wanted the SB due to the advertised better power characteristics but if it's about the same I am now questioning my decision. The other thing that I am unsure about is the build quality of the SXPS vs the XPS. I have not been able to find a decent comparison between the two.

My best friend has the SXPS 1647 and I've used it a few good times to be able to compare the two.

Everything in a nutshell: The L502x will be faster and run hotter. No debating or getting around this. Every test will prove those two facts. Looks are in the eye of the beholder. I like the design of the SXPS but I also like the design of the L502x. The heat will not be a problem. When the processor is 95C, you won't feel a thing on the outside, except for at the vent. The 1080p screen is a nice upgrade. If you chose the 720p screen, you will be disappointed compared to the SXPS's 1600x900 screen. The island keyboard has a refreshing look and feel compared to every keyboard made in the last 10 years. Is the L502x gonna blow the SXPS out of the water? No, but you'll notice the performance difference. Turbo Boost 2.0 is nice.

I say try it out. You can always return it if it doesn't meet your expectations.

NoSlow got to your temps point, but just to address the efficiency angle...

TDP represents the amount of power that the cooling system should be designed to effectively deal with. It can somewhat correlate with expected heat output at the highest loads, but you can't make big claims about it otherwise.

There are sort of two types of efficiency: Using less energy to do the same work (e.g. less waste energy in any given computation) and scaling the energy to the actual workload (e.g. power gating, throttling, TurboBoost)

Sandy Bridge is generally better at the latter: it shuts down cores and downclocks when power isn't needed, and only scales up into TurboBoost when the demand is there. But the cooling systems are dynamic. If the fan was running 100% all the time, idle temps very well might be much lower than they are, but that isn't power efficient, would drain the battery faster, and would be annoying. So the cooling system is setup to keep temps at some reasonable level while idling, and your/our idea of reasonable may not be the same as the processor's idea of reasonable.

Thx, my 1645 has the 1080p WLED and so does the L502x that I have on order.

What do you think of the build quality between the 2?

Agreed, I think two endpoints can be compared. Idle and a specific bench. The 1645 with 720qm + 5730 idles at sub 50 for both CPU and GPU.
Furmark standard 720p test bring the CPU into the 60s and the GPU to mid to high 60s.

If anybody has had the chance to look at the heatsink mating surface (NoSlow?), do you think the design is conducive to lapping? I've heard the surface was pretty rough, but I want some more input from you smart people.

I will say it was not smooth at all. There were small grooves on the cpu copper mating surface. It even made me think about lapping the surface before I stuck it back on. The only reason I didn't is because of the quality of the heatsink design. I was afraid that lapping would take off too much material to get a perfectly smooth surface. Not only that, but the heatsink copper portion did not appear to be perfectly aligned with the aluminum surrounding, making me think the heatsink was sitting on the chip at an angle. I didn't want to create a bigger gap between the heatsink and the chip, resulting in even higher temps and no way to correct this besides ordering a new heatsink. I'm not saying it's not possible, I just decided one night to do the repaste and didn't want to leave 50 screws laying around overnight, forgetting where they all went the next day, so I did all this from start to finish in about 2 hours. I should have done a spread test with some of my AS5 before putting my good paste on to test all this, but like I said, I was in a hurry.

Thanks, NoSlow. I just ordered the lapping kit from SVC.com and will give it a try if my stupid computer ever gets here.

You're going to lap the XPS 15 heatsink?
    Careful.
When I repasted mine it had some deep grooves and from the beginning stock config it looked like there was quite a bit of distance between the CPU and heatsink as it is. Taking more surface off will only make it worse.

Dragon age is a multi-core CPU optimized game. It is going to stress all four cores of your cpu. It is an an oddity right now in gaming because you need both a good GPU as well as a good CPU to run it at max.

It really will perform better on any QuadCore cpu over higher clocked Dual cores.
