I'm in the UK and i think that I don't have a choice if I go for the AG panel advertised. Am I stuck with the inferior panel in the "Home" section?............. I do not want 3D as I'm keen on the long battery life with "Optimus".

    cheers

    Hi guys, I recently purchased a L702x full 3D 1080P, 555m, I7 2720QM.
On playback of videos/blurays/dvds/streams online I am seeing a muddy/fuzzy/noisy look over the whole screen. I have just had a Dell engineer around to replace the mobo/gfx card and its still exactly the same. I have updated Bios, tried the latest WHQL nvidia drivers but nothing is changing. It is almost like the video is being played through onboard graphics.
Totally baffled now and almost thinking its just the new 3D technology in the laptops.
I owned a 1600-900 Dell Studio 1749 prior to this and blurays looked sharp and crisp with none of this noise throughout the image.

    Here is my screen details.

Did you and/or the tech confirm the panel is set to 120Hz in the monitor properties?

    >>> Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display > Adjust screen Resolution > Advanced setttings > Monitor tab

As shown below, the panel is capable of many refresh rates, but 120Hz is best even in 2D operation and required for 3D operation.

    Yup all set at 120Hz....
The video playback looks great if its minimized in a smaller window. Looks muddy and noisey when full screened.

Its almost like when I full screen the video is being run through the HD3000 on board... but I know this isnt possible as I have the 3D model which means that optimus is not available and the GT555M is constantly on.

    Weird...
Yes, Optimus is not available in the 3D compatible model. Other items to check -

    A. Another movie.

    B. The video player settings (make sure full resolution is displaying at full screen).

    C. The NVIDIA dashboard properties to see if the application or the video card is controlling the color and 3D/video settings.

    D. The external HDMI video output to see if the same issue is present on an external display. If not, it may be the LCD panel itself or a semi-flaky eDP LCD video cable inside the laptop.

    Tried multiple films, same outcome.
    Player settings are correct
I have tried to let the application controll as well as nvidia
I have plugged an external 1080p tv into the laptop and it is still blurry.

    Thanks for the suggestions Scott

Does this issue only present itself when playing back movies? To confirm, your desktop and programs look fine?

Have you tried any codec packs to enhance the player abilities?

Here is a good codec pack - LiteCodecPackFull.zip

Very strange. To me, it looks like a lower resolution setting is still enabled when you go full screen. If everything else in Windows is clean, including high res. photos, then it is most likely not the video card or system board. It must be software and/or driver related.

I've got the 1080p AG screen, and its just awesome. Colors are rich, viewing angles are great. The Anti-Glare coating makes all the difference as far as readability goes. Compares to my Inspiron 1720 that has a 1080p screen w/ glossy, the difference is night and day. Won't ever have a glossy screen again.

    Hi everybody !

I'm planning to buy a Dell XPS 17", but i'm still hesitating about the screen !

As i've got a 20% reduction, the FHD AG (non 3D) costs 85€ more than the HD+

Should I go for it ? Is it worth the extra cost ?

Or do you think the HD+ (1600*900) screen is good enough ?

I haven't found comparative photos of those 2 screens one the web...

Thanks a lot for your help !

Well if you want to have a full HD screen to play full HD movies/games, get the AG one. If you don't care, take the lower resolution. It's just a matter of how much you give importance to media. The difference is sort of huge between e 1600x900 and a 1920x1080. I took the AG full hd non-3D and I'm very happy with it (except of course the GPU issue which I hope will be sorted out soon... but it has nothing to do with the screen)

I've never had a Full HD screen, so I don't know if I'd prefer it for an everyday use.

If the overall quality is really better with the FHD screen, then I should take it.

I wish i could see comparative pictures of the 2 screens...

I've heard that mate screens generate less eyestrain... Is that true ?

Because i'm gonna spend a lot of time working on Word documents for example.

    Thanks !

Since this thread is specifically about the anti-glare screen available for some models, you should know, that the FHD 3D screen is a different screen and has a glare finish. If you like to know more about these specs in general, then I believe you should be posting (reading) in the general L702x thread ( link).

After weeks of anticipation, I just received my new XPS 17 with the 1080p FHD AG screen.

It's absolutely terrible. The color quality is fine. The anti-glare coating is *horrible*. Text is barely legible. It's so textured that white background actually appear to be refracted into multiple colors. It looks as if the screen is covered in a thin film of oily fingerprints. Imagine projecting a screen onto sand. That's what it looks like. Please tell me this is not normal.

I just got off the phone with Dell support and someone is coming out next week to replace the LCD. I can only hope this fixes the issue. Surely this is not what the screens are supposed to look like.

With a little bit of luck you'll have it replaced with an LG-Philips screen, which is also matte, but the coating is much better - at least I don't see it, as I did on the Chi Mei screen.

Ugh, please don't say that. This is the second high-end laptop I've tried, and I just can't understand manufacturers putting crap components in them. I had an Asus G74 before this and returned it because they all apparently use flakey keyboards and touchpads. If this is the standard screen quality for a high-end XPS, then it's getting returned as well.

It gets replaced tomorrow. I have my fingers crossed.

This forum has been really helpful. But also this this forum really got me worried about my desire for an anti-glare screen. Nevertheless I decided to buy a Dell XPS 17 inch HD AG laptop and I am so glad for this decision. None of the worries I read about in this forum actually came true. I don't have any problem with this so-called blur. The screen is wonderful. It is visible under every circumstance I use the laptop. During day time, in the evening and outside. I use the laptop for work and for watching dvd's. I don't play games. I have been working on about 8 laptops before, and none of them were anti-glare. The choice for an anti-glare was the best decision I ever made for laptops. Based on my experience, I really don't understand the discussion about the more deepened black on non anti-glare screens. I acknowledge the deepener black, but it is such a minor detail. In the delight of this anti-glare screen it is hardly noticeable. What is noticeable, however, is that you can watch the screen no matter what lights are burning. There is simply no reflection bothering you. Also, I did not notice the matte coating, a thing some posts were complaining about. To my experience, this is exaggerated. The determination between true life and anti-glare worried me the most, but I can truly say that my initial wish for a non-glare screen has been very rewarding. I hope my experience is of some help to those who have similar considerations.

Yea, some people really got really overblown reactions saying stuff like "text is unreadable" and "horrible".
I get compliments about this screen at work when I'm watching movies and playing games, so its not "horrible" as forum members claim.
I've had this computer for about a year now.

i have this screen and love it - good colors and brightness. it's the first screen i can use without problems in my yard due to the high brightness and lack of reflections.

as beertha stated comments like "text is unreadable and horrible" are overblown. i'm a web designer, so trust me - if it was that bad i would have returned it by now.

my only complaint is for the calibration - mine has a greenish tint in the yellows.
