ive got a dropped full coverage in bad condition october 2005 m170 laptop.
it has full coverage still until october.
do you guys think Dell will throw me around for a few months so they dont have to do anything or am i lucky to get a replacement? -
There's only one way to find out......
-
ha awesome...
yah i will soon. -
But seriously, you have a M170 with 5 yrs warranty?
It depends what is wrong with it, but I wouldn't wait to long if I where you.
With all these replaced systems here I feel becoming like a dinosaur with my M1730. I've seen ppl really excited about their rigs being replaced by the M17x. Besides the performance boost, I wonder what are the pros and cons compared to the M1730. -
Comparing between the two, I like the shape, design, and feel of the M1730 more. Performance wise, the M17x is faster.
I had:
-M1730: x9000, 8800 mGTX SLI, Physx, 4 gig. RAM, DVD-DL, 1920x1200 screen, Intel Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 200 gig. hard drive, and other standard stuff.
-M17x R1: Pretty much loaded but went back to mothership due to screen firmware, computer shell color, and latency issue.
-M17x R2 (currently have): 920XM, 4870 xFire, 4 gig. RAM, Blueray burner, 1920x1200 RGB LED, Intel Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 500 gig. hard drive, and other standard stuff. -
Well to me, going from M1730 to M17x, it boils down to these:
Pros:
-Design and build quality (Plastic vs. Aluminum)
-AlienFX (Color changing from keyboard to cover)
-Better Hardware (Of course)
-No latch on screen (Opening and closing of lcd)
-Overall laptop temperature remains cool (maybe a little warm under full load)
Cons:
-No G15 LCD (Extremely useful with different screens)
-Fan Noise (M17x gaming turns fans to full)
-Glossy Screen (Looks nice, but shows too much glare)
-Trackpad (M17x trackpad quality is terrible) -
Ok thanks, I got the picture.
I'll wait it out. I'm still satisfied with my rig. I don't gonna spend €3800 every 2 years for a new system.
After 2 years my M1730 is running still flawless. I try to keep it from dying by taking it apart for cleaning from dust bunnies every 2nd month and replacing the thermal paste every year. It's a kind of ritual to me.
-
Hello, guys!
If my M1730 has died and it still on warranty on what I can count?
Can it be replaced with m17? If so what I should do for this? -
If you still have your warranty, Dell would try to fix your laptop by replacing parts.
The only way they will offer a replacement is if they don't have replacement parts.
You can demand your money back/replacement if they tried to fix an issue for three times and failed. -
mfractalv, thanks a lot!
One more question: do you know if there any term exists in which Dell should repare my lappy and if they not I can ask for a money back/replacement?
About money back: should I show 'em invoice or something or just Service Tag will be ok? -
they only issue money back to orginal owners as far as i know.
The terms for replacement are like i said
1. they don't have the part to replace your faulty one
2. they tried to fix the problem for three times unsuccessfully -
I couldn't get money back because I owned the M1730 more than 30 days. I could have bought a new M17X-R2 loaded with 4 years warranty complete with accidental care for less than when I bought the M1730.
What I got was a loaded M17x-R2 (no SSD drive because I did not have it originally) plus an extra year warranty/accidental care extention.
Even I got what I have now, I did not enjoy the experience I went through. -
Does anyone know what parts Dell is out of and in turn would replace your computer if that part went bad?
I have complete care with 480+ days left on it and my son knocked it off the table chasing my dog around the house.
The funny thing is I never take it off my desk in the basement and the second time in years it gets dropped.
Does complete care cover drops or just water spills?
Thanks all -
C/C covers drops too.
-
I have my M1730 with X9000, 8800m SLI, 2X200GB HD RAID 0, BR Write fail and Dell offering me an upgrade. How much credit did you guys get from Dell toward your old 1730??
Thanks -
DELL has been replacing M1730 with Alienware. If this is your route, read around (at least this topic) to make sure you are not short changed.
-
I did read through the whole thread.. (took me a while..)
Dell is offering me $2300 credit towards the new system (M17x) From what I see here people been getting replace lappy for free, what am I missing? I have to pay like over $1000 to get a M17x replace....
What should I do? -
Silver,
As you read through this thread you'll notice that people have had widely varying experiences and treatment.
Personally I'm almost to the point of litigation with dell.
I've gone through the Attorney general and BBB with absolutely no help.
Dell has defrauded me from obtaining lawful warranty service. They have repeatedly lied to me about the status of my account as well as fixing any problems. I've caught them in so many lies and been through hundreds of hours of phone calls that were a complete waste of time.
Despite having purchased an at home warranty they have denied me lawful service. This has been a repeated tactic going back for about 5 years with various systems that I have owned or still own. I have noticed this as well with clients. It seems their default stance is often to send the machine to the depot whether this is warranted or not.
Even when there is evidence of a hardware or software problem Dell refuses to acknowledge it and it often ends up in the hands of attorney generals or as class action lawsuits.
The type of treatment you've undergone is unacceptable. Some of reasons may be who is handling your case, what type of warranty you have, whether you purchased it directly through dell, what country you are in, etc.
My advice is to seek counsel immediately. I'm piling up tons of evidence against dell. I'm tired of their BS. -
I had a very similar to your system. This is what I ended up with (just as a reference for you): M17xR2: 920XM CPU, 4870 Crossfirex, RGB LED, 500 GB hard drive, 4 GB RAM, Intel WIFI, Blueray burner, an extra year of extended warranty plus complete care, and other standard stuff. This is the result of many phone calls, 6 orders cancelled, and a total of roughly about 3 and a half months.
I would try and call to talk to someone else to get help. I am sure they have documented the discussions in your case number. Make sure you know what you want, be firm, don't yell or scream (it's another person on the other end of the phone; even sometimes it's proved other wise), and ask the case to be escalated to someone who can help.
And take a deep breath, be ready for a bumpy ride. -
Thanks for the reply. But Dell only offer me $2300 for my old 1730. I have to pay additional $$$ towards M17x... I did not ask for refund or system replacement, just they cannot fix the old 1730. I bought the 1730 2 years ago at Dell Outlet. Would that be the reason they pay me less?
-
out of interest, why can't dell fix it ?
-
I just had my M8800 SLi card die in my m1730 today (actually 2nd card to die in last 2 yrs) and supposedly they are overnighting a replacement to a service tech to replace it. I will update you all if/when it actually arrives and is replaced, but i received an email saying it was shipped from Ohio via Fed Ex.
So it's looking like they have cards in stock and aren't offering replacements atm
-
I am sure Dell can fix it by replacing the parts. I guess they don't want to spend mroe time on my 1730 after few replacements. I did not ask for replacement, just they offering me the repalcement system..... I rather have a nice working 1730 than M17x. I am sitting without lappy for 2 weeks now.
I am not looking for how to fight Dell so I can get freebies. Just wondering how Dell is offering different resolution for their customers. -
Here is an update of my m1730 repair. Dell sent a tech to my house today and replaced the system board on my machine and also put in a 9800m gtx sli card. The Dell part number for the video card was K650M. My laptop is now fixed and they were able to do it 2 days after i called with the problem.
-
So let me get this straight...
You got your original 8800M GTX replaced by a 9800M GTX?
Whow, that's some nice upgrade. -
Its cheaper then Dell giving you a new M17x as they have done before, looks like there is a new batch of 9800M GTX cards floating around. I have the engineer here now replacing mine! It took 1 Day for the engineer to come round. Reported the fault on Friday Afternoon and the service enginer arrived today at 0900. Pretty good service that isnt it?
I thought I would be getting a new M170x laptop - alas no but I know that I will one day!!!
Im gonna thrash my graphics 24/7 now! - 2 more failures till i get a new M17x!! ???
-
Surely it has to be a like for like replacement. Thats the law
in the UK not sure about the USA
-
Dell man came replaced my GPU and left. I am now left with a very cool running A2 9800M GTX (65c idle and 70c On full load - compared to my old card 75c Idle 85-90c on full load).
-
It's a nice upgrade.
Now I hope my GPU's will die.
-
I started getting the "NMI: Parity Error" on my M1730.
So I called and went through the process of letting them troubleshoot... we ran diagnostics, during which my m1730 rebooted itself. They immediately approved a parts replacement. I decided to let them try to fix it their way, before I raised a stink. They are sending me 4GB of RAM, two new 320GB HDD's, and a new GPU. I had to send screenshots of my BIOS and device manager to prove that I have 8800 GTS's in SLI, because the original configuration of this machine had 8700's.
I just got confirmation of the Fedex overnight waybill, that the parts were shipped. Included is the K650M PN....
So, hopefully tomorrow, the tech will be out to do the work.
I'll update again when it's finished.
-E.W. -
Nice, they agreed to replace for a high end card even though the original config has the 8700?
-
Yeah, the original config was 8700's, however, I got a good deal on 8800's for the m1730, so I put those in myself, and the 8800's are the ones that just died.... So I had to go through the extra steps to prove that I did have 8800's, so that they wouldn't try to replace them with 8700's.
-
The deal yo got was from Dell then? Why would they agree to replace a card that wasn't purchased from them ?
-
But all of these cards were purchased from Dell, originally. You can't (and never could) buy dual 8800's in SLI for the M1730 straight from NVidia or anyone else... No matter where I got it from, it originally came from Dell.
Anyhow, my Dell tech just left. She installed 4 new GB of RAM, left me the two new 320GB HDD's for me to install myself if I want to later, and for the icing on the cake, she installed the new GPU's that they sent.... two 9800M GTX's in SLI.
It's awesome!
Couldn't be more happy.
Hope everyone else gets satisfaction as I have. I called Dell on Monday, and two days later, I've got a laptop that is better than the one I bought.
-E.W. -
Finally Dell is doing something to satisfy us M1730 owners.
I know I would be more than happy when they replaced my card for a K650M when it brakes down. -
if you didn't buy the card directly from Dell, it was not covered by dell in the past. There was a dude who used to sell Dell parts like GPU's in other forum, and many assumed it was covered under system warranty. When the GPU crapped, and Dell denied the warranty, the dude got the blame and was banned from the forum.
You were extremely lucky Dell covered it. -
Well my battle has begun with Dell with my M1730 ive been having problems with the graphic card for over a year but ive been trying to fix it with video drivers and other means myself when I should have just let Dell deal with it anyway.
They replaced the first card last Wednesday July 7th also the motherboard the lcd and the processor basically rebuilt the computer. After they did this it was absolutely horrible from screen flickering, to blackouts/whiteouts to the all the video drivers I tried crashing a new problem i didnt have b4. So they replaced it again this past Tuesday and the same day even without playing a game with the computer just sitting there it would automatically shutdown and give me the #M1004 error code oh if I tried to play a game this would happen within 5 mins, this was a brand new problem I never had b4 so now they going to replace it again tomorrow.
On my last call the lady I talked to I think she was more upset about it than I was since I was trying my best to be calm and patient, but she brought up giving me a total system replacement and even told me if this last card does anything to call and she will note in my case to give me a system replacement. Go figure.
I also believe they gave me a bad motherboard too because one of the USB ports doesnt work and the bluetooth and wifi will stop working ever now and then a problem I didnt have b4 either.
I guess I opened a can of worms by doing this huh lol. -
Hi all i purchased a M1730 off AUS ebay which still has 6 months of Premier Warranty
left. The seller has had warranty transferred & also emailed a letter stating i purchased the laptop and transferred warranty to me.
POW (Parts only Warranty)
COMPLETECOVER COVERAGE PROGRAMME
XPS 24x7 Phone Technical Support
NBD (Next Business Day on-site)
Year Value Night/Weekend Onsite Service
The laptop has had its motherboard, 8700 graphics cards, ram replaced 3 months ago. I'm a little worried about the reliability of these laptops and mine has the x7900 cpu so it runs a little hotter. I am planning on extending warranty and have had a quote from dell emailed to me. $250 1yr $480 2yr
though this does not include COMPLETECOVER COVERAGE PROGRAMME as Australia Dell does not offer this anymore.
Question 1 - If i extend warranty do you think they will continue to repair my laptop or replace?
Question 2 - Whats my chances of the video cards being replaced with better ones ie 9800gtx
Question 3 - How can i check ownership and warranty has been transferred into my name? (i assume it has as they emailed the warranty quote to my email) -
my replacement finally came in. selling it though...
have another more basic computer im using right now. -
Good luck with the sale!
btw,saw that you put your service tag there.. i wouldn't do it if i were you..
It is very easy to steal "ownership" of Dell's laptops knowing the service tag.. -
Hey I dont know if anybody is stilling viewing this thread or not but I wanted to say hello and ask people for their advice/experiences on their 1730 replacements. Heres the brief history on my machine, Its now 2 years old and in the space of my 2 years of ownership I have needed the following replaced:
2 x graphics cards
6 x motherboards
3 x keyboards
3 x harddisks
2 x heat syncs
2 x dvd writers
Obviously i have lost all the data of my machine more times than i can shake a stick at and is still now after 2 weeks having power off problems, engineer told me there is nothing he can do to fix it and Dell informed me that I will recieve a replacement unit of equal or better spec to my current one. Does anyone have any idea what this might be and who i need to speak too. With all the problems and losses from businesses and this machine I would like to tell them which one I want as obviously I dont trust my XPS let alone want another, I want the alienware model but with a more recent spec. Considering all the hassle ive had I dont think its unreasonable but does anyone know how I can go about getting it? Can anyone recommend upgrades to the current spec that I should ask for? Cheers in advance peeps
XPS M1730 CORE 2 DUO T7700 2.40GHZ, 800, 4
4GB 667MHZ DUAL CHANNEL DDR2 SDRAM (2X 2
320GB (7200RPM) SATA RAID 0 STRIPE (2X16
FIXED INTERNAL 8X DVD+/-RW DRIVE
DUAL 256MB NVIDIA GEFORCE GO 8700M GT
AGEIA PHYSX PROCESSING UNIT CARD -
you are likely to get a alienware m17x-r2 with pretty basic spec.
-
Did anyone you know of get any luck is a better spec from a compensating me for hassle point of view? Might be pushing it but really, its been a mess start to finish!
-
Hey guys i logged a call with dell to get my MAT$%$I Bluray Drive replaced.
I thought it would be Next Business Day Replacement but wasn't i silly its now day 3. I phoned again just now and they said there is no stock. Went to the Dell Support History URL to check status.

What does Pending Approval mean and why are they replacing my Harddrives?
Also i purchased this unit of previous owner and to my knowledge the ownership and warranty has been transferred to me. but every second call to dell they state the previous owners name and i have to explain i am the new owner. They also said i takes 2 weeks to transfer ownership. AUS owner to AUS owner. I want to make sure its in my name before i extend. -
Did you get it repaired yet? Mines been over 2 weeks, NBD wwarranty and still not working, still no replacement.
-
mafimushkila still no repair and they haven't even contacted me. What part are you waiting does your say PENDING APPROVAL? So far i haven't had very good service from Dells XPS Support line i think this is going to be quite a battle. I have only just realized card reader will not accept xd card as theres a little spring loose inside & one of the lcd hinges seem a little loose can i put a warranty claim in for those?
-
as you can see above mines had a whole heap of problems, im still waiting on ANOTHER motherboard, hard disk graphics cards and CPU so a whole system basically, they did tell me they will replace the whole unit but still nothing on that front either. They tried to offer me a latitude at half my existing spec but i declined it obviously and told them its not suited to my businesses which it isnt. So im still waiting. Two weeks without systems or reasonable repair now, so they are now in breach of warranty, and will start looking at arbitration. You should ask them to sort the XD reader as well yes your warranty covers every hardware part of the machine, so they are obliged to fix it.I have no idea what pending approval means unless its that they are waiting for the part. But as dell so kindly told me, im a woman what can i know....grr i hate this company!
-
That's terrible... they should just replace yours a with m17x your laptop would have brought 2x m17x with all the parts they have replaced on your m1730. I brought this unit thinking it's got warranty so I'm safe but i wish i saved a bit more now and brought a ASUS G73 lol Don't get me wrong i love my m1730 but dell need's to rethink their after sales customer service. I'm not sure i want to extend my warranty if i have to use 1 or more months of warranty just waiting on parts. DELL come on your happy taking money for warranty but you have no parts.
-
1 month is pants to wait especially if your next business day. Start a lcaim going with them, pro rata the warranty days lost through waiting, pro rata unit cost whilst you cant use it etc etc then add on for hassle caused. Send it to the top bod and they will come back to you a heap quicker. I run two IT businesses from my machine and everyday I email then with updated claims that should I take it to arbitration I will be claiming for and everyday they call to keep me updated which is lovely, but its not productive. Dont call me about a manchine, send me one!!
