True, but well..that brochure is more than enough to claim an RJ45 dongle for free from Dell...they put it there by mistake...they pay for that...

Website specs mention the Ethernet dongle but it's not part of the order. Probably a screw up.

Does anybody know if this new model comes with a backlit keyboard? I do a lot of work late into the evening so this would help with wife based nagging about needing the lights on bright!

For people ordering the XPS 15, what discounts are you getting? I ordered the middle config on the phone and managed $165 off 1899. Dell Advantage 5%, + $50 + $15 when I asked for a student discount. It basically covered tax + $50. Anyone manage better than that?

The manual is already online (search the XPS13 manual, open it and change the model code to xps15-9530).

It seems to be service-firendly for such a thin notebook.
After taking of the bottom, you can change/access:
battery(!), RAM (two not soldered DIMMs!), HDD, MSATA card(!), NFC card, Wireless, fans (two!), speakers.

Phillips screws, now Torx or Pentalobe, nothing glued, RAM/HDD exchangeable - take this apple.. :)

The only thing I missed was a mention on the version 512mb MSATA / big battery. Would be interesting if it`s one big battery, but probably it is.

In France the student discount is a 10%-off coupon, so I got the top model for 1800€ instead of 1999€ :)

Too bad for not having the RJ45. I've used it on my XPS 15 when my wireless had gone on the fritz due to interference or when in a hotel that had really slow wireless (which are many hotels). Sure you can get a dongle, but that's just something else that'll get lost.

My Sandy Bridge XPS 15 is feeling heavy and old, but I'm waiting on reviews for the 1800p screen on this since it might not be that noticeable of an improvement over the 1080p screen and if the 1800p resolution is dropped to 1080p, does the text look fuzzy. I'm also going to wait for reviews of the trackpad, keyboard, potential heat and throttling issues, and wireless issues before buying. Being able to use the 5 Ghz band should help with wireless.

It has to be one big battery. If you compare the dimensions in the spec sheet the 91Wh battery is the same on all dimensions except width. The teardown confirms that the hard drive is next to the battery so removing the drive would allow a wider battery to be installed. Looks like a good design overall after looking through the manuals it should be easy to service/upgrade. I wonder if it will accept 16GB dimms?

    Type 6-cell (61 Wh)
    Dimensions:
    Width 10.63 in (270 mm)
    Depth 3.65 in (92.65 mm)
    Height 0.35 in (9 mm)
    Weight 0.71 lb (0.32 kg)

    Type 6-cell (91 Wh)
    Dimensions:
    Width 13.48 in (342.4 mm)
    Depth 3.65 in (92.65 mm)
    Height 0.35 in (9 mm)
    Weight 0.97 lb (0.44 kg)

Hmm would be interesting to purchase the bigger one after the fact. Swap out the hdd if you know you'll need the extra juice. I know it would be kind of a pain, but I can think of times I'd like to do that.

I was wondering if I get a lower model and than I got the bigger battery and fit it in it would it be a pain and how much that would cost probably expensive but now the manual is out its easier to figure it out.

Edit: sorry I did not see someone already think about this lol

Spoke with Dell, just wondering if any of you have managed to get a lower price
    $2300 version
    $150 off coupon
Further 2% off after finding a nice sales guy
    So it's like $2107

They also told me that the return policy is now 30 days from shipping, no restocking fee, free return shipping as well.

Also, do people here recommend dell's warranty? What about the accident protection? does dell support give deals for that as well?

I signed up for their advantage program for a 5% gift card, then their member program for a 4% discount and finally some $50 discount. I couldn't find cheaper options not being a student. Took forever to order through their support though.

Sadly the members program doesn't have 4% off in canada, and their doesn't seem to be a student discount in Canada either!

It's the maxed out version, no warranty changes

The warranty on XPS products is based in America so they are easy to work with. They actually send a technician to your home or office to replace failed parts for you so you don't have to ship your laptop to the service center and go a few weeks without your laptop. As far as the accidental coverage goes I had a laptop a few years ago that I spilled water on that had the accidental coverage and they replaced the system without any hassle so I am a huge believer in paying extra for the accidental coverage (but only on laptops).

One trick I use when I order a laptop from Dell is just getting the cheapest support contact that is included. Usually within a month of the purchase I will either get a call or email from Dell with a better offer to upgrade the warranty coverage. Dell will let you upgrade your warranty at any time while the system is still under coverage.

is anyone else excited about how serviceable this thing is? Yes the heatsinks look like apples and so is the battery placement. But they are their for the same reason that everyone smartphone looks like the iphone 1. it just makes sense.

This turned out to be an awsome machine for the PC community. Should be a gamer changer. i can see all other major manufacturers coming up with something similar next year.

    bring on the power ultrabooks!

This thing is basically more easily serviced than the Alienware 17 and much much much better than the alienware 14. And those are marketed an serviceable enthusiast notebooks!

    the XPS is back!

Only other company that's comparable to apple then, apple has apple stores everywhere, but dell comes to you, everyone else requires sending in!

Definitely. I'm very pleased. Take note, Apple: you don't need to glue your batteries and solder your RAM and SSD to make a thin, sexy laptop.

Edit: Although, I guess Apple doesn't actually want people inside their own laptops. One reason I'm not a fan.

As for coverage, I stuck with 1 year for the hardware warranty. Failures due to manufacturing defects generally happen earlier rather than later. I did get two years of accidental damage coverage, though.

I believe so. Just because I was curious, I went through the academic member checkout process, and on the shipping info page it asks you for the name of the school and "student or faculty ID" (paraphrasing).

Thanks for this info. How do you get to the academic member checkout process? Do you just go through the normal site, and after entering Ship To and whatnot, it lets you go that route, or is it a seperate process from the beginning?

Dell Member Purchase & Employee Discount Program (MPP) | Dell

Click "University Students" (should also work for faculty I think) and it should automatically apply a discount to everything you shop for. There's a field during checkout that you enter your school/ID info. I presume that Dell checks that info for eligibility after they receive your order, but before they send the order confirmation email, but this is just a guess.

Edit: Dell Australia also has coupons codes for students, up to 15% off, but with just a quick Google I didn't see anything like that for the U.S.

Side note, I got my order acknowledgment email, but over 24 hours later still haven't received the order confirmation email. It's supposed to take less than 24 hours, and the order doesn't show up under "recent orders" on my Dell account. I wonder if it's because it's the weekend? Anyone else have this issue?

Nope...they removed that long time ago...is anticommercial to give warranties for that long...basically at the end of the 4th year you will have a new laptop...hehe. Max 3 years of warranty and separately the accidental damage warranty...

Actually, the US website does show the 4-year option.
Whether it makes sense depends on how long you are going to keep the laptop.

Business site only shows three, but you might still be able to extend it through your rep if you really want to.
On the Home site: +$329.00 - 4 Year Enhanced Support
    +$199.00 - 4 Year Accidental Damage Service

I'll go ahead and post the chat log I had with the sales rep.

10/20/2013 01:04:49PM Logan: "I'm looking at buying the new XPS 15 and I don't see it on the university/students page for discounts"
10/20/2013 01:05:09PM Agent (Sohrab K): "Glad you chatted in today, I'd be happy to help you"
10/20/2013 01:05:13PM Agent (Sohrab K): "let me provide the link"
10/20/2013 01:05:17PM Logan: "I'm curious if this is an error in the system because its so new or if I actually don't receive any discounts on it"
10/20/2013 01:05:18PM Agent (Sohrab K): "please give me a minute"
    10/20/2013 01:05:22PM Logan: "ok"
    10/20/2013 01:06:07PM Agent (Sohrab K): "http://www.dell.com/us/eep/p/xps-15-9530/pd"
10/20/2013 01:06:34PM Agent (Sohrab K): "here is the to the XPS 15 and has the member / university discounts"
10/20/2013 01:06:39PM Agent (Sohrab K): "would you like me to recommend a great deal based on your usage"
10/20/2013 01:07:24PM Logan: "well im leaning towards the full specced one right now, i like that it has 30 whr more battery over the middle config. do you know what that equates to for tested battery life?"
