If you need high performance TB3, want a fingerprint scanner, or believe Dell dares release a premium laptop not "fully" vetted, waiting is smart

I've got the fingerprint scanner on my old Lenovo T. But I was always annoyed by all the delays during fingerprint logon. I think typing the password is faster actually.

I've canceled my order. Disappointed there is no Windows Hello compatible camera. And does not seem clear that fingerprint scanner is available right away.

I may buy a 9550 XPS, wait for the prices to come down. Where's a good place to read about problems with the 9550? I read something about a coil whine, etc.

There is no uncertainty regarding the fingerprinter scanner; it will not be availble over the short-term.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/forums/dell-xps-and-studio-xps.1049/

Note the 9550 was a disaster on release. Most major issues were solved months ago via firmware and driver updates. Coil whine may be inevitable on such small-powerful laptops.

For max performance you should consider repasting CPU-GPU and replacing the VRAM thermal pads. Undervolting can provide a big jump in thermal performance also.

The fingerprint scanners have evolved with the non swipe ones. There is no way I would be able to type maybe 1-2 letters before the one on my ThinkPad P50 has me logged in already.

I hope they did ;) The swipe itself doesn't take so much time. The longest delay is the "please wait" before it lets me swipe, longer than the recognition, got no clue what kind of preparations it needs. I'm afraid that this is another good opportunity for Dell to screw up a driver.

The recent Dell response did say that they are adding the fingerprint scanner in Feb. I'll stick to my order for now since my estimated delivery date at order time said Feb 2nd.

Edit: This is confusing. The order summary page mentions an estimated delivery dated of Jan 18th, yet when I click the order it mentions 28/02/2017 as the estimated delivery date.

What does it say for others that have ordered?

If somebody wants your data, still can take out your hdd and copy to an another everything. Windows will save you from nothing. If you serious of security, get a MAC.

Not with bitlocker. Also, what's "MAC"? The cosmetics company makes secure computing devices now?

Lol well actually, now that they soldered everything inside of those pieces of **** together...

To have Bitlocker you need to upgrade to Win10 Pro, right? Are there any other pros/cons for a normal personal user? Is it very user friendly? Does it have any side effects?

Bitlocker with a self encrypting drive is as fast with encryption on but Dell tend not to ship drives that have this feature, such as the Toshiba I have. Pathetic considering but it is Dell after all. Yes you need pro, google it for more info as it covers a wide range :)

They're removable if you remove the bottom cover, but they're not encased and exposed like a real "replaceable" battery is.

Are they Miracast ready? Is it easy to extend your screen to a good new TV? What kind of lag would you expect trying to wirelessly extend your screen with 4k video?

Would it have been better to have an Intel wireless card rather than Killer for streaming to TV purposes?

I wonder if windows hello compatible camera is part of the Feb / March version of XPS 9560 along with the fingerprint scanner, ecc memory support for 5520.

XPS 13 2 in 1 already has this

I received an email from Dell: "I regret to inform you that your order number XXX for XPS 15 9560 is flagged as invalid by manufacturing and no longer manufactured."

That makes no sense to me, since I picked from their configurations.

According to my chat with Dell rep today: "I confirmed with the product team and ECC RAM will be available on Precision 5520 update but there is no update on Launch date and it will not be offered with the Finger print reader." FWIW...

What would be the point of having ECC memory on the XPS15 as it does not come with a Xeon AFAIK?

The 9560 does not have an option for a smaller battery so that there is enough space for a 2.5 SSD drive?

I think I've seen two smaller-battery options on the Dell page, one with a HDD and 32GB cache SSD, and one with SSD only (a cable/mount for the 2.5" drive may be missing, I recall this was a low-spec machine). You can replace the cache drive with a proper m.2 2280 SSD.

So, what are the option to support a 4K@60hz monitor with the new XPS15? Dell repeating the debacle with the old version where the 13" had a DP1.2 but not the bigger 15"?

I see it is now active on the UK Dell site. Needless to say Dell wont upgrade me as it has been 3 years since my initial purchase so I have taken the refund option!

Question is do I stump up another couple of hundred (with current discounts offered) to get the 9560!

Having sent back 3 Dell units in the last couple of months I guess I'm not on the most wanted list either...or at least on the most wanted customer list :D

But the real problem here is Dells appalling lack of QC...

    Hi to all.
I write from Italy and i'm interesting to a dell xps 15.
I have read about to much problems for the 9550 series and, because this new model have all same specs except that of new cpu and new gpu, my question is...
is a good idea wait for this new model or the suggestion is to leave the dell and look at other brand?

Finally!!! I'm jumping desktop ship and I'll be getting my very own Dell XPS 15 9560. I debated for awhile between that and the XPS13 but the dedicated graphics and stronger quadcore i5 won out for me in the end.

Right now I'm in grad school and portability is a must but I'd also like to game every now and then... Right now with my discounts I can get $75 off a new one... I'll be parting out my i7-6700k desktop for awhile till I have enough cash to buy the XPS 15. Once I've got that all sorted out I'll be able to pick one up. Planning on swapping out the 32GB SSD and HDD for my SanDisk X400 512GB m.2. I've also got big plans for better thermal paste and some pretty hefty overclocking on the GPU if possible!

What's with the limited options on the 9560 from Dell website. The high end machine only has an i5, no options for hard drive, RAM, processor? Am I missing something?

Dell has gone the way of Apple, you don't get to configure things. There have been studies on buyer's remorse and it's often related to having too many choices...

Yes. You need to click on the "Next" button to view models 5-7 which have an i7-7700HQ and up to 1TB of SSD and 32GB of RAM. Dell's product page is really non-intuitive; you are the second person I know of who thought that the 4th machine is the best Dell has.

On an unrelated note, does anybody have a GPU-Z screenshot of the GTX 1050 in this machine? Gaming benchmarks would also be appreciated, but I would like to confirm the number of ROPs.

Yes, this is probably one of the worst website I know of today. Add to that zero support for responsive design and it is a miracle anyone manage to buy from Dell. Outside of the US the websites are also extremely slow and crashes frequently. And this from a company claiming to be a leader in the field of IT.
