    Hi all,

I've got an XPS m1530 since August. It has T8300, 4 gigs RAM and 8600M GT. I reformatted the Vista partition and installed XP Pro a month ago, and the machine has been working great until lately.

Two days ago, the computer shut down when I was playing Fallout 3. I just restarted the computer but it shut down again after 20 mins of play. I thought that it was an issue with heat. I was running A08 BIOS and I updated to A12 yesterday. Then, I upgraded Nvidia drivers to the latest beta. But it keeps shutting down when gaming after a short while. I attached the temperatures below. These are just after an Alt+Tab from Fallout 3. THM gets very high (90) when playing. However, it drops very quickly (in a few seconds) to 60-70 when I make Alt+Tab from the game. Idle temperatures are OK (THM 45-50, CPU 40-45, GPU 58-62).

    Any suggestions?

Hey guys, can someone please help me. Only yesterday when playing Far Cry for a while, the game would suddenly freeze and jitter for about 5 seconds and sometimes the graphics would go all screwed up like missing/distorted textures or missing models. After this it would go back to normal however the framerate takes a huge drop from like 60fps down to 10-15, and in the menu when it's usually over 250fps, it would drop to about 30fps. I quit the game and restarted and it worked fine.

Today however, the same thing happened but now I had to restart the computer for it to go back to normal. But then it wouldn't take long (when my comp was already warmed up nd all) for it to happen again.

I've attached some pics...can someone tell me if they're ok or what.

It also happened in Rainbow Six Vegas from 30fps to 10fps. I think the GPU is like downclocking or wtv because I noticed that the temperature stayed under 70C while I continued playing Far Cry with the huge lag (just to see).

I tried CS Source out but it seems to maintain a constant framerate between 60-100+fps unlike Far Cry which suddenly dips. Although, I think CS might have been affected slightly when the temps were over 80C as at some moments I noticed it dropped to 30fps and then going back up to 60+fps. So not so sure as I can't quite remember if it usually does that since I've never really taken notice of my fps in CS.

I've had my M1530 for about 5 months and have already had the fan/heatsink replaced because it rattled. I've played heaps of other games that are more graphics intensive like Crysis, Prey, HL2:Ep2 but it only started to happen with Far Cry but now feels like maybe it's happening with all.

I don't have a laptop cooler but I do have the back end elevated with a couple homemade 'stands'. Does this seem like some kind of hardware failure or is my GPU downclocking for some reason (I haven't heard really of anyone elses doing this)...84C isn't too high is it...or is it..? Oh and can someone tell me what THM is...the top ACPI temperature thing? Thanks

You have high temperatures and are viewing artifacts on the screen, it sounds to me like a faulty graphics card,or at the least its overheating, I'd get on to Dell as you are still under warranty and get them to replace the motherboard.

Argh. Which temps are high? All of em? What's normal for GPU when gaming?

I tested Far Cry on my brother's Asus M51S and after testing around in some intensive firefights his GPU max was 82C. So his is the same as mine. Could it be ventilation? I've got my M1530 on a desk and it's facing the wall...about 12cm away.

Is replacing the motherboard a long process requiring dismantling basically the whole laptop? I've heard horror stories of Dell techs being rough and damaging stuff....it was hard enough for me watching the guy just change the fan/heatsink...

Its more than just your high temps, its the fact that your gpu is artifacting(lots of fuzzy dots etc.) and that its downclocking. Mid 80's isn't neccessarily bad for the gpu, some people have been reporting over 100, but it is pretty bad for the cpu.

replacing the motherboard isn't that big a job, the techie should do it in an hour or two.

hi, just a question for scottbenntt. Did you lose any of the data on the computer when they replaced the mobo?.. or did u back them up before hand?

yo scott, what was the old mobo?...and is foxconn much better or something?

I'm gonna have to ring Dell and get my mobo replaced. THM goes up to 94C and CPU up to 85C.

I just tested on my bro's ASUS M51S running games and his THM only went up to 76C and his CPU only up to 70C max. So yeah yomamasfavourite is right...mine are looking way too hot.

I can answer that question mate because Dell replaced my mainboard 3 times allready.
No you dont lose anything. You just have to adjust the BIOS time and install the newest BIOS Update because Dell just gives you the refurbished shi* without flashing the BIOS to the newest Version.

Just good the vacuum cleaner, turned it on, hoovered the cooler, and it was amazing! temps went 20C DOWN! take a look at this.
    before and after!
    No kidding!

Max load is done under 3DMark06

Hey my temps have gone down 10 degrees after the technition changed my fan:

    Idle
    GPU 55-63
    CPU 44-56

    Load
    GPU 79-80
    CPU 72-77

    is this acceptable?

I am still kind of worried about my CPU. its a T7800 (65nm) 2.6GHz and its got core #0 at 74 and core#1 at 77. Is this all normal?

you for real? was there a lot of dust or something? cause if those figures are for real that's pretty amazing...

my ACPI (i still don't know what this is) temperatures went up to 103°C today when playing COD4...highest it's been which is ridiculous!

I noticed in COD4 my framerate which is like 50fps usually often drops to like 10fps when moving around quickly then goes all the way back up...I don't know why but I'm guessing it's cause of the overheating.

stinkin dell won't answer my email I sent on Sunday about a replacement motherboard. they're meant to be next day support...grr!

ACPI means Advanced Configuration and Power Interface.
However, 103 C is to much. What I noticed from my M1530 :
Everything over 100 C at the THM and the performance drops. It looks like its an emergency performance cut off. I tested it with my old M1530 where I had a lot of overheating problems and as soon as you can see the 100 C the temperature drops about 20 C and the performance as well.

Get a new mainboard and , if you have the old one, get a new heatsink assembly. If nothing works stirr the shi* and you will get a brand new laptop (thats what I did after 4 technicians and still the same problems)

Yeah if I don't get a response tomorrow I'll give them a call....reason I don't call is cause I hate having to sit and wait forever to talk to someone.

Are they during games? GPU I'm pretty sure is normal if that's during games? Idle should be between around 53-62. CPU I'm not too sure about. 79 might be a bit high. I get high 80's which is bad but my bro gets 70 max during games....so might be a bit high not too sure.

why hello thar. long time reader, first time poster. i joined these forums for this very topic. i bought my 1530 back in january; it was my first laptop so i thought that the heating issues may have been normal. aaaanyways, i recorded these temps today while playing some Left 4 Dead. methinks they're a little hot. i was curious as to whether you guys think that they're hot enough to warrant a call to dell for a replacement heatsink/mobo/fan what-have-you.

i have the 9 cell battery and i elevate the back on a book about an inch for extra ventilation. i just cleaned the fan yesterday with a q-tip and have undervolted by from 1.250 to 1.075. thanks for your help. heres a pic from earlier today:

Those temps are too high bisken. They are WAY too high, I suggest you call Dell immediately. The CPU should ideally not be seeing numbers in the 80s, and the GPU should not be seeing numbers in the 90s.

Here are my temps after a run of 3DMark06 (obviously not a full stress test):

(M1530, T7500, AS5 on CPU and GPU, BIOS A12, notebook cooler, CPU undervolted)

Dell tech finally came over today and replaced my motherboard and heatsink/fan. Man, taking out that touch pad at the top with all the media buttons requires a lot of force....looked like he was gonna snap the thing lol. Took about an hour but the results are great. Check out my temps. The max temps are after playing games for a while. Huge difference. So if anyone has temps like I had before, definitely get Dell to replace the motherboard and heatsink/fan. Now...let's just hope I don't have any more problems...

Same here Dell Tech came and replaced my motherboard, fan and heat sink and temperatures all just dropped. Now my idle temp is around 44C compared to 60-65C before. See attached new temps..

Also noticed the heat sink they replaced, it has an aluminum like edges on it (where the pastes are) while my old one are all copper like material. My unit was so hot that it melted down the paste in the the heat sink, the tech had hard time pulling them out like, they were already fused with the motherboard, and when he finally pull it out, i can see that there's almost no paste anymore in between the mobo and the heatsink. hence my high temps.

Luckily i decided to call them up.. i would have burned my laptop maybe in a month or so...

Mmmm... I thought I had one of the shafted laptops, until I realized that I was running the old A09 bios. Hopefully the update will help slightly. I was only getting mid 80s on my GPU anyway, so nothing too horrible.

Hmm pchan what do you think the cause of the overheating was? Since we both had the motherboard and heatsink/fan taken out at the same time, we don't know which was the problem. Does the motherboard play a part in the overheating (defective or something?) or you reckon it was solely the heatsink/fan....since you said the thermal paste was all gone. Does the heatsink/fan cool the cpu as well or mainly just the gpu? Cause my gpu temps were pretty much fine but it was my acpi and cpu which were over the roof.

I didn't get to see the thermal paste on mine, but when he took it out it came out normally. It's a bit of a worry cause there's a good chance that the temperatures will gradually get high again if the thermal paste wears out isn't there?

not sure which one but my suspect is the heat sink not able to do its job anymore properly. i can pretty much see the difference in their make as mentioned above and i can say the new one looks and performs better. Btw im playing gta4 now here in my 1530 and its now playable, unlike last week when it was like a slide show and my temps were reaching 100C for GPU and memory chips and around 85-90C on the cpus. Now, my max after playing for about an hour is around 75c on the GPU and around 60-65C on cpu.

btw my new motherboard chipset now is Intel PM965 (Crestline-PM) + ICH8M.. i wasnt able to take note though my old one... searched their delivery receipt and nothing much is mentioned on it. Will call up dell tomorrow and see if they have some record of it somewhere...

I have an xps for about 3 mounth and i woud like to post some temp. like everyone else.

    In idile : GPU : 56
    Core 0 : 40
    Core 1 : 40
    Hdd : 30

    In load ( nfs -undercober , COD 5) : GPU : 75-82
    Core 0 : 74
    Core 1 : 74
    Hdd : 39
I took a picture of my cooling system. I don't know if is the new or the old one.

But I think I have a problem with my dvd-rv (Mathshita); It can not write dvd-dl, and when i insert a dvd-dl in the dvd-rom , it is read, but when ai try to copy on the hdd i get after several minutes an error

that is exactly what i had before mate, all copper like heat sink... when i had mine replaced just this weekend, you know that end points under the big square chips are, the contact points are all aluminum like now on my new heat sink.... your temps doesnt look good, i had my 1530 since July this year and when the dell tech guy tried to replace that same heat sink, it took him a screw driver to pull them out coz they were like fuzed to the chips.. when he finally took them out, i can see that the cooling paste were almost melted, that there were almost nothing left between the chips and the contact points.. hence playing gta 4 for about an hour or so will shoot my temps to CPU=~90C, GPU and memory chip=100C... i suggest call your dell support persons there and have your mobo and heat sink replaced. Did the trick for me.... now my temps are just around CPU=60C, GPU and Memory=75C max after playing GTA 4 for a few hours not even just an hour.. and we know how demanding this game is to our machine... btw is there a COD 5 now? loved the COD 4 in PS3... oh.. not the COD where the setting is on 2nd world war.. i think that is what you are referring to as COD 5.. dont seem to like that game...

Those temperatures are a little high but not as bad as it could be. Althought it could just be a matter of time before it gets hotter. Maybe just get the heatsink/fan replaced first cause that could easily be the entire factor. If temps are still high get the Dell tech to change the motherboard (make sure he brings both). This would also be a favor to me as I'd really like to know since I didn't do this when the Dell tech changed my heat sink and motherboard.

Hmm I don't know what heat sink I had in before and which one the Dell tech put in. I could open and see maybe. But from memory I think those square copper pieces were aluminum and each had a square piece of thermal paste under them. Is that what your new one is like pchan? I also had my heatsink replaced 1st about 4 months ago so I don't know when they started using the new heat sinks.

If it is the heat sinks causing the problem, won't it just be a matter of time before they fail again? I have 4 months warranty left. By then I bet my temps will slowly start increasing as the thermal paste wears away like you said pchan.

BTW in that picture, I know the top left chip is the CPU.....but what about the bottom 2? Are they the GPU and ACPI or something...I don't know. If so which one's which?

Your temps are sound as a bell, perfectly normal.

Undervolt your CPU and you will probably shave 10-15C easy off that load max, and maybe even a couple off the GPU from having less ambient etc.

But whatever, your temps are fine, nothing to worry about.

I found the undervoltage guide...is a nice work, a masterpiece :). I lowered the voltage and I obtained an incredibel result.
In full load, when playng nfs undercover, COD5 I reached a GPU: 74 max
Core 0, 1 : 66 or so., and an increase in batery life of 15-20 min (not fully tested) ,

hmm just played tf2 for 1.5 hours and my temps since getting the motherboard/heatsink replacement have a new max cpu and gpu. CPU was 64,70 before and GPU was 79. Now CPU is 71,71 and GPU 82. Maybe my first test just wasn't thorough enough and so didn't give me the right max temps. Just hope that the temps aren't just slowly getting higher. Interestingly though ACPI max is always 77. I reckon it's solely the heatsink that causes these overheating problems. Who wants to bet that temps will gradually increase and I'll have to get the heatsink replaced again? I ordered a Zalman NC1000 but the place I got it from rang me and said they just ran out and won't have stock till mid January! Bah..

cool, but doesn't it decrease the fps in the games? if so, by how much?

oh and I found another pic of the old copper heat sink.

i do not know how to see if the fps is affected by undervolting....i'm not such a game player...give me a method how to do that, and i'll post the results.
that was the old cooling system, but Copper isn't a beetter heat conductor? then the aluminium that consists in the new cooling system?

lowering the CPU vcore will not affect the CPU's performance (unless you are starving the CPU of voltage it needs to run stable). If you take for example a T8300 at 2.4GHz with 1.2v and run bench tests, they will be the same as running 2.4GHz with 1.0v. The voltage isn't for power, it is for keeping the CPU signaling clean at higher MHz (clock cycles).

The best program IMO is Everest v4.6. Just unzip the files to a folder and run the everest.exe file. Then click on the Motherboard section and open the chipset tab.

Oh I see thanks. I think I'll give undervolting a go then and see what it does. Funny that you use the T8300 2.4GHz as the example cause that's what I have. Is that what you have and did you manage to get it from 1.2v down to 1.0v?

What voltage did you get your max multiplier down to? Is your 12x normal multiplier 1.1375v by default? That's what mine is even though the 11x multiplier of the guy that wrote the guide was 1.2500v by default...hmm I guess it varies between different laptops.

I haw the max multiplyes 11x and the value was 1.2500v, and now it is 1.037v.
It depends form laptop to laptop.
I playesd intensivetly last to days and the cpu t was 66 max, and the gpu was 78 max , and without the undervolting it was 75 fot the cpu and 83 max for the gpu

Awesome! :D I just undervolted from 1.1375v down to 0.9875v. This only undervolts the CPU but since the ACPI, CPU and GPU of the XPS M1530 share the same heatsink, the undervolting lowers temps for all components which is a bonus. Probably the best tweak you could possibly ask for!

Wonder how much lower the temps will go once my notebook cooler arrives.

The attached pics shows the before and after temps I got, after playing tf2 for over an hour in each case.

Yeah I have the T8300. I am able to run it at 1.0v (before under volting it ran at 1.18v) at full speed. I tested the stability by running Prime95 and ATI Tool at the same time for 4 hours. These programs stress the CPU and the GPU. So I basically pushed them both to the max. After 6 hours of not crashing, I considered it stable.

    Hi,
I am a new member and having same problem with my M1530 due to CPU or GPU too hot.
I am currently in Australia and its summer here...
I bought my M1530 a year ago (last Dec), at start it run smoothly on games, got no problems with them (Crysis, Bioshock, Gears of War) and I think it starts from July or August this year,
The cooler underneath at upright side of the M1530 is extremely hot.
It just like boil and at that time I didn't notice it much, cuz the weather is getting hotter.
However, at the start of Oct it begins to auto shutdown my M1530 when I tried to play Crysis, Guild Wars, or new game like Spore.
I googled the problem and I found here.
Crysis has been running smooth for me, but now, I played about 5 mins and it lags like hell.
So I can just call Dell and tell them to replace my heatsink, and they send guys over to replace for me?
I dunno how the instructions work, em.
I got a 3 years warranty to go... and just a few days ago I replace my Dell AC adapter due to my old ones failure (malfunction with the power connection inside the adapter).
I wonder why Dell got so much problems in hardware...cant they make it better??

edit: oh yeah I noticed when I play flash game in Facebook, it becomes laggy after few mins....terrible..

Sounds like your GPU is downclocking if you're getting excessive lag in games. Download HWMonitor and run it while playing games and tell us the max temps you get.

If you're comp is automatically shutting down when playing games that could indicate that your GPU or CPU is getting dangerously hot and so it's doing so for safety measures.

But from the sounds of it you should get Dell to check it out. Just ring them up (Australia XPS Hardware Support: 1300-790-877) and tell them the problems and say you'd like a replacement motherboard and heatsink/fan and they won't hesitate.

As to why Dell have many problems? Well, I had a Dell desktop before the laptop. I had it for 6 years and it still works but in that time I had my fair share of problems that drove me nuts and I said I wouldn't buy a Dell again but the XPS M1530 was too tempting. Now I've had problems with this laptop but at least their service is good and I do like the laptop. Laptops in general however are known to have problems related with overheating. It's natural considering the limited space and the amount of heat that is generated. That is why it is important to know how to maintain and keep your laptop cool as doing so will extend its life.

The weather becomes cooler now like 19 - 20C in evening, however I just played Spore for 5 mins and it comes out this temperature:
I dunno if its normal or not.....up to 9xC temperature.
Sometimes it will go up to 100C above when I played it longer, like 1 hour or more.

Look at my post at the top with the screenshots. The first picture is what your temps should be around. So as you can see your temperatures are about 10 degrees C higher than they should be.

Tell Dell you want your motherboard and fan/heatsink replaced due to overheating. Firstly get the technician to replace the fan/heatsink and while he is there, just run the game and see if the temps are lower. If they're lower than good, you're done. If they're not, then get him to replace the motherboard. There's a good chance it's just the fan/heatsink that's causing the problem because of worn out thermal paste or something.

I also highly recommend you undervolt your CPU like I did, as you can see in that second picture above that my temps decreased a lot. Here's the guide
