Send it back and get a lower res, does it not save you some cash?
I'm on 1440 res and its just lovely. AU Optromics screen but Dell should be calling me back today, hoping to get an LG one back in there (long story).
Just de-bloated and put new nvidia drivers on. New partition and system image saved. Will test out some gameage like the Bioshock demo tonight hopefully. Lost Coast was running at 1440 res no problems, everything up to its maximum.
May investigate Fraps if I want to get anal about FPS, although don't really want to!

Came out to be $2200 for the laptop, $2700 for everything. And that's with free 2 day shipping.
My rep said even though the ship date was the 6th, it should ship before then as there were no backorders or low stock on anything I requested, but I won't hold my breath...
EDIT: Also, I'm aware that the XPS comes with a case and I bought two additional cases. Mainly because 1 is a sleeve and one is a backpack that a friend of mine has and I like the way it's laid out. I travel alot and when I'm not travelling, I want to keep it in the sleeve and when I'm on the go, the backpack will hold everything I need.
And even with my portable HD's, it'll weigh less than my 8lb HP dv6000. -

I <3 this machine
I had a M1330 but didn't care for the resolution and was overcharged by dell and I could only return the machine to get savings. So I decided on the larger 1530. The + screen res makes all the difference -

7 days from order to delivery...not bad!
Some initial impressions - Packaging is top-notch. The included case is much more substantial than what I had imagined. The notebook's appearance is even more impressive in person than in pictures. Overall materials quality seems pretty nice. The LG screen, while having a fair amount of backlight bleed, is nicer than the one in my Sony AR series. The audio quality isn't as bad as I was expecting via the built-in speakers (but still not great). Headphone jacks sound really clean, no hiss or interference that I can detect using a set of Sennheiser HD280's. Touchstip seems to only require a very light touch, also surprising considering what I had read prior to ordering. The Teac DVD drive is also much quieter than I was expecting.
The bad - First and foremost, the hump in the keyboard/touchstrip panel. Inexcusable. If the fine people assembling these notebooks in Malaysia are having issues routing wires appropriately, the problem needs to be addressed instead of turning out one machine after another with this rediculous deformation. I'd personally like to pimp-slap every single person in quality control at Dell. Looked at the M1530 display models at Best Buy and Sam's Club and both had worse warping than mine. It was humorous to see the $500 Acer's with perfectly flat KB's sitting next to the botched $1500 XPS's. Going to call Dell and see if they'll send a new KB/touchstrip and let me replace it myself. Hopefully routing the wires so that they don't push the keyboard and panel up won't be too much of a problem. The fan is clearly audible most of the time. The HDD is also fairly loud with a nice fingernails on sandpaper sound. Luckily I don't work too often in a totally quiet room. Other than those 3 things, the notebook is excellent, and i'd have to say i'm pretty happy overall.
Maybe worth noting - Vista seems like a dog compared to XP. I did the clean format, and it still lags a bit. Going to try Les's tweaks next. Also, the user interface looks nice, but doesn't seem as intuitive as XP. -
I don't know when mine is coming... stuck in pre-production...
-
And it shipped today. DHL says it'll be delivered on or before 3/5/2008.
But my secondary package is still in production.
EDIT: Grrrr. Tried to get my Service Tag... At first the rep didn't want to deal with it, and I stated that I have had previous reps give me the Service Tag after the laptop shipped, so he tried. No Service Tags attached to order yet... I tried. -
New Inspiron 1525 it's replacing a 700m that did such a fantastic job for many
years it was a tank. The 1525 does'nt feel as solid as the 700m did, but I'm not sure what Dell would. I'm pretty happy so far with it, paid $699 for 7250 CD2, 250gb HD, 2 gb Ram, webcam, the fan's a bit loud runs alot encoding video a processor intensive task for sure, but so far I'm pretty happy with the performance for the price. -

I've ordered myself a high spec M1530 a couple of days ago .. and my order has only just been upgraded to "confirmed" .. I hope they are not this slow on the rest of the process!
I phoned and asked for XP to be installed, but "no can do". Also asked for red color, but they said I had to order the product red which contains that abomination "vista ultimate" - I dont want to pay for something I will delete! They refused to make a product red with vista home or XP.. I also got them to promise by email to use a LG screen, will have to see if that really happens or not.
Specs

Vista(R) Home Premium (will be replaced by XP immediately!!)
..and all the standard stuff, dvd, bluetooth, etc
From Dell Australia/NZ, price about $1990 USD -
why would you pay the ridiculous price dell asks for ram? shouldve went out and bought some 200-pin 667mhz ddr2 laptop memory. its so much cheaper still going to be a sick system. you won't be able to use the fingerprint reader though with xp. but o well.

Mines what it says When I ordered my dell to upgrade from 3gb ram to 4 it was only 50$ and i didnt have to put it in myself not bad I dont think
-
thats not bad. dell canada they want $150 to get 4gb upgrade from 3gb...not worth it when vista only recognizes 3.5
-
Yeah i thought 50$ was ok so i just did it im a big spender like that I mean the computer ive been using for the past 3 years only has 256mb so 4gb will be welcomed

Delivered: 03/10/08
On top of that, I noticed 5 days after ordering there was a deal going on at Dell Canada for XPS systems. I called Dell and asked if I could change my order to match the deal but they told me my laptop has already been shipped. To compensate however, they will send me a 500GB 7200rpm external HD plus extend my warranty for an extra year for FREE. Not too shabby.
Gonna play around with it a little bit then reformat to get rid of the bloatware. -
Specs in the sig... so far, I'm pleased.
PC Mark: 5723
3d Mark: 3844
Replaced a Toshiba Satellite Pro I purchased in 2003 for heavy road use. Design has changed a lot in 5 years, and I'm getting used to the different sounds, quirks of a slot-loading drive, and the glossy screen. In general, though, it's less bloated and bogged down than the last Dell I purchased right out of the box, and my satisfaction with Dell was very high throughout (ordered on a Tuesday, had it on the doorstop 6 days later).
Price: $1571, including 6% MD sales tax, through EPP (federal gov't employee)

hey guys,
how are you all?; gonna buy a new laptop and i was confused between two laptops the Lattitude D830 and the precision M4300. so any advice about which one is better?, better means more reliable, durable, and powerful all together.
till now i got the main difference between them is the graphics card the lattitude D830 has the NVIDIA® Quadro® NVS 140M and the Precision has the NVIDIA® Quadro® FX 360M what is the main difference between them??
also is there any other differences between them other than that....
and what is the build of each of them some internet links say that NVIDIA® Quadro® NVS 140M has the build of 8400M-GT based and the NVIDIA® Quadro® FX 360M has the build of 8400M-GS based..but i thinks its not correct....any ideas about that...
thanks in advance, appreciate your replies -
Just ordered the Vostro 1400! At $762 it was just too good of a deal to pass up! Got the 8400 graphics card and 3 gb ram. I can't wait to get a hold of it!

Hello! I'm new to these forums and have a new Dell (see sig) to match. I am extremely happy with it even with the Samsung display. I think the 1330 & 1530 are some of the nicest laptops Dell have made in a long while.
It replaces my ancient Dell Inspiron 8200 (P4 1.6GHz, 1GB DDR SDRAM, 15" UXGA, 64MB GeForce4 440 GO, XP Pro) which still works fantastically well except the battery is kind of dead now. This laptop has been relegated to 'kid duty' now.
Also in the house is a Dell Inspiron 9400 (Core 2 Duo T7200 2.0GHz, 2GB DDR2 SDRAM, 17" UXGA, 256MB ATI Radeon X1400, 100GB 7200RPM HDD, XP Pro) which I got my wife 2 xmas's ago. She loves it but I can't convince her to throw Vista onto it.
Yes, I like Dell notebooks. For desktops (two of those) however I build them myself. -
my notebook comes today..any minute in fact I hope..
-
I just order my new, very own, M1530! Huzzah! Since Easter is coming up I expect this to take a bit longer than usual to deliver. Oh well I can use my crappy Asus M6R for a while longer...
I guess now I'll have to update my sig so show off a little. -

Okay,
Just got my new 1530, completely hooked up. The ONLY problem is that the keyboard is slightly raised in the middle... is this something I should worry about? -
-
i have had my dell vostro about a week now and it is going strong i love it

My 1530 has arrived (finally!)
All seems good, clear screen with no grainyness. The left hand side USB ports seem to be very tight - I have to push my usb flash drive in quite hard, but on the right side it slides in smoothly .. a potential problem?
I have wiped vista and installed xp, just loading drivers now

Well, so far so good as they say.
Heard a lot of bad things about dell but so far my experience has been really good.
Ordered a vostro over the phone (UK) and the guy I spoke to claimed to be, and has so far been my sole point of contact with dell, offering smoe good deals and service.
I went for:
Vostro 1500
T8300 CPU
3gb ram
Nvidia 8600GT
etc...
It arrived this morning and i've used Les's fine guide to reformat and remove bloatware HERE and tommorrow i'm hoping to use his guide to tweak my vista to run faster GUIDE
I ordered on the phone on 12 march, and it was delivered 17th (without paying for or specifying any extra delivery options) which I thought was very good.
so far.. so good.

Came in today
M1530
T5250 (will be upgrading this myself)
2.5GB Ram ( Upgraded the ram myself)
Nvidia 8400M GS
And pretty much the standard stuff on a 1530
so far i must say i really like the design and the looks of this laptop over my HP DV6000 -
with T5250 your upgrade patch is rather limited
-
my 1530 has arrived yesterday
T7250 2.0ghz (will change to T9300 later)
1gb DDR667 (already changed to 4gb OCZ DDR800)

no bluetooth (planning on adding bluetooth 2.1)
broadcom dell 1505 wireless
sload-loading dvd burner
9cell battery
yesterday completly re-formated, reinstalled mediadirect, installed windows vista 64bit SP1, downloaded all drivers.
Everything is good -

Hey guys, I hope you all know Dell quite well as I'm looking for some advice:
I'm looking at buying a Vostro 1400. I notice there's free shipping until the 26th of March. I've heard Dell's shipping can be pretty expensive. I was going to order at the beginning of April but I might end up getting stung for postage.
So, would it be best to order while there's free postage? If I don't what's the postage likely to cost?
That's the real question.
On a side note - here's what I am ordering and why:
My current laptop (L100) has some minor shortcomings (x200m graphics, celeron cpu, woeful battery life) which are starting to annoy me. So I will be ordering:
Vostro 1400
14.1" WXGA with Trulife
Core 2 Duo T5270
2GB DDR2-667
120GB 5400rpm hard disk
8400M GS 128MB
8x DVD-RW
6-cell
Vista Business
£385.40 shipped
The T5270 is a bit diminutive at 1.4GHz but Dell's cpu markups are ridiculous and I'll barely even tax the T5270 with my usage. -
-
never mind, got something confused, T5250 is santa rosa
-
I just got my Dell XPS M1330, specs in signature. This is one slick notebook!
-
for those that had their XPS (1330 or 1530) laptop for longer time, lets say few months.
Does screen/hindges slowly wore out? screen getting loose a bit? or no? -
I ordered an Inspiron 1720 (in sig) on 3/19
ESD: 4/1
Expected Deliver Date: 4/4-4/9 (unfortunately, 4/4 is a Friday so in the worst scenario, which is likely to be the case, it will arrive after the weekend.)
That's a 3 weeks process for a laptop with no delayed config. I can only imagine what it'd be like to have waited another week or more just because one chose those high on demand equipments. *sighs* -
I've just got my Vostro 1500 (from Dell UK). I ordered it on a Saturday, by Monday it had been shipped, and I recieved it on Wednesday. Pretty good!
Spec:
1400 Core 2 Duo
2GB ram
120GB HDD
X3100 graphics
1280x800 display
First impressions:
Keyboard: great. In fact, I've never come across better.
Touchpad: great (once I'd turned off the scrolling and dragging features). The buttons are a bit spongy, but are quiet.
HDD: very quiet (Western Digital)
Screen: not great. Lots of back-light leakage (though only really apparent when the screen is black), and awful vertical viewing angles. Horizontal viewing angles pretty poor too. It's bright though, and no 'grittiness' that some Dell displays have. Reflections are bad too, but that's glossy screens for you!
Speakers: excellent (for a laptop)
Fans: rarely on, and the low setting is very quiet.
Build quality: good solid feel, but battery wobbles and the lid has some movement when closed. The media buttons feel cheap. The most irritating thing is that the screen lid shows fingerprints like you wouldn't believe. I'm going to have to keep a micro-fibre cloth handy at all times. Other than that, it looks really cool!
So, it looks like I'll be keeping it. For £350, I think it was a real bargain. Highly recommended. -

Mine is in my sig and I ordered mine really early the morning of march 20th a thursday and on friday morning it said that it is in production and mine has an expected delivery date of 4/3/08 and a EST ship date of 03/27/08 might it ship sooner is that what most of you have experienced?
P.S. It's an XPS M1330 -
I bought a dell xps 1730 laptop from dell in December for over $4,000 thinking it would be the best laptop I have ever owned. 5 days after I received the laptop, I started to have an error message regarding the hard drive upon boot up. After a few more days the computer would not boot period. I was out of town at the time and did not call tech support. When I returned I did call tech support and eventually went through the process of determining the hard drive had failed and a new hard drive was sent. The technician at that time sent me the following email:

The hard drive was replaced and everything was fine for a while, then the same problem starting happening again. I called tech support and they confirmed that the hard drive had failed once again and told me they would send me a replacement again. I told them that Eugene (the last tech) had promised me credit or an exchange and they told me the policy did not allow that. I then spoke to the supervisor (Mark) who recited the policy to me again and said it did not matter what I had been told by Eugene because the policy did not allow it. I then asked Mark (who by the way could not care less about my case and sounded like a broken record just telling me the same thing over and over again regarding the policy) how a support person could tell me (and email me) one thing and then the company does not deliver. He had no answer. I then asked to speak with his supervisor (Sam Gonzalez Mark told me) and Mark said that is not possible and suggested that I contact tech support to get a new hard drive.
My problem is that I did not escalate the problem when it first occured to try to get credit because I relied on what Eugene had told me and thought maybe this was just a freak accident. When a hard drive fails on a computer that is 5 days old it is not a good sign in my book and I was worried (with reason). I know that it is most likely a hard drive problem but how could the same problem happen with a hard drive twice (two different drives)? Add to that the fact that installing all the software dell puts on the computer takes a few hours and dozens of steps and it is a real pain. At the end, how is it possible that a customer support person can tell me something via email and on the phone and then have his supervisor say it is not valid and conflicts with policy (and do nothing and not allow me to speak to his supervisor)? The customer support person doesn't know the policy? In addition to this problem there have been other with this laptop.
I have owned more than 10 laptops in my lifetime as well as at least one dell desktop and laptop. I have never had a problem like this and have never returned a laptop. Right now I have a sony and a fujitsu (as well as old apples, gateways, etc.) that are still functioning up to 7 years after their puchase date. I cannot believe that this can happen with dell or anywhere. If you cant rely on what the customer support person tells you then what? -
I've had my XPS 1530 for about a month now and I have to say that this is the worst buy I've made in the last ten years. I've bought a laptop and desktop with Dell before and never had any problem. Both great buys. This laptop, however, has turned me off Dell forever. Honestly, I'm going to tell pretty much anyone I know to avoid Dell.
First of all, the keyboard is horrible. The keys easily get stuck and one of them came off. It took three people to manage to put it back in place.
Second, the screen is terrible. If I'm in a sunny room, lights reflect on the screen and I can barely see anything. The screen is already scratched and I'm someone who is really careful with her property.
Third, and my biggest problem, the internet connection. I know it's a problem with the computer and not the connection itself because I've had the same problem at home, school, and my brother's. My computer either does not recognize the LAN connection or says that it's limited. I have to reboot my modem about 16 times and restart my computers as many times as well, plus do the troubleshooting 2 or 3 times to finally manage a connection. It's completely ridiculous. I've never had so much trouble connecting online with a computer before.
I'm really disappointed because I've had a wonderful experience with Dell in the past. But I've learned my lesson. I will never buy Dell again.
Now I have to save money to buy a new laptop that will actually be worth it. -
Just got my new Vostro 1700 after having a pentium 4 for the past 4 years. My main use is as a DAW,
