Thanks to forum poster win32asmguy my wife just got a nice little Dell refurbished Inspiron 1520. This is our first Dell product ever.
Specs:
Midnight Blue Inspiron 1520
1.5Ghz Core2Duo 2mb L2 cache
2Gigs RAM
Vista Home (will immediately upgrade to Ultimate 32bit with a reformat)
nVidia G86 8400 128mb
120gig Hdd
WXGA non-glossy 1280x800 LCD
She was really just wanting something to replace her desktop and be able to play the Sims 2 well (and to look slick). This should fit the bill nicely.

I just got my Inspiron 1420 this week! works great, and is truly one of the best laptops I have ever used. specs in the sig.
-
Just got my M1330 today.. wow, its pretty awesome. Screen is nice, I hear no whine, only problem with the build was something I had to snap back into place on the underside.. Now to format it so I remove this bloatware.
-
My big bro kindly gave me a brand new laptop, although the model is a little old: a Dell XPS 1710 (yup, the one with fancy LED lighting and metallic-like cover!)
Specs:
T7600 (unfortunately not the G version that's overclockable...I believe...)
7900GS 256MB
200GB 7.2k
WUXGA (I love this resolution!)
Think I'll add the bluetooth module later when I have spare time. The upgrade sounds too easy to pass it up.
The laptop weighs a monster and is sized like one as well! I got the new Targus Flare backpack and surprisingly, this backpack makes carrying around the laptop very tolerable (or maybe it's because my very old Jansport is just very very bad now). -
I think I got a pretty good deal what do you guys think? Also I heard good things about the LED LCD screen. Am I going to notice a big difference with the LED screen over the standard screen?

As far as the deal, I just now was able to configure the same specs, but with 3-year warranty, at-home, accidental damage, and LoJack for $1464.41 before tax. -
Just ordered mine, took advantage of the 40% deal (thanks to whoever posted that up) and basically went all out (except I didn't get blu-ray, it was still an expensive upgrade at $300)
Dell XPS M1530-Tuxedo Black
Intel T9300 2.5GHz 6MB L2
4GB DDR2667 RAM
WUXGA Display (hopefully won't take too long)
320GB 5400rpm
nVidia 8600m... yea yea, the standard vid card
Intel 4965 Wifi
Bluetooth
Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse
Slot-load DVD
X-Fi Sound card
9-cell Battery (still expensive, but only $101 with the 40%)
Hybrid TV Tuner with the Gyroscopic Remote
2yr Complete Care w/ LoJack (how well does lojack work?)
~$2800
-40%
=$1700
I could go on, but everything else is standard and everyone knows what's on the M1530 already so that'd be pointless.
I just want to thank everyone who left reviews and/or provided updates on this laptop, you've been very helpful in this purchase!
-
And also, probably a little late since I've made my order already and the deal has expired, would the LED display be worth the upgrade? I was strongly considering getting it when I was stuck with purchasing the notebook with the standard 6-cell battery, but now that I've got the 9-cell, would the slight increase in battery life outweigh the dramatic decrease in screen resolution or are LEDs just an opinion thing?
-
Well just received my 1330 with the following specs... love the look but I have to honestly say right out of the box performance is terrible. I've had to manually shutdown almost after every session. Not sure where to start I know I need to remove all the bloatware and reformat but I also want to dual boot with xp mce. So doing all my research. just setup internet etc...

I was very pleased to have it delivered so fast, I am very happy with my new laptop, absolutly no problems at all, so I am a very happy customer. -
Just recevied my Inspiron 1525. Everything is great so far, except that the fan noise is lounder than I expect, and it runs more frequent than I would like too. Well, the notebookreview did mention the fan noise. So I think notebookreview is very accurate at pinpointing pros and cons.

Im either getting a Vostro 1500 or a Vostro 1510. Im getting the Vostro because of the XP (if not it would be the inspiron 1520).
My basics are :
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5670 (1.8GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM
160GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor
However the problem is that the 1510 has integrated video, I would have to pay an additional $150. But I like it because is a bit lighter than the 1500, and its a brand new model.
My laptop is intended for office and home use. No gaming or DVDs.
Or should I get the Inspiron 1520????
thanks to all who can help.
best, -
Got my new 1720 to replace my 9400.
Everything so far is nice, EXCEPT that I got screwed BIG TIME with the display....
My 9400 had the UltraSharp display. Although my 1720 has the HI RES 1920 with TrueLife, it is NOT the same as the 9400's UltraSharp.
Dell keeps telling me it's the same display, but both SIDE BY SIDE and you see a world of difference.
And they still charge the same price for this display. This is my deception about my new 1720. -
just got mine, finally!!!! but I have WXGA+ and I want to ask you guys, if youre so damm goodsighted or if you have changed the DPI settings.... regular 96DPI on 1440x900 seems sooooo tiny!!!!!

The actual delivery date was over 2 weeks earlier then they estimated, which was realy nice.
So I opened up the box and did a complete visual check of the exterior of the notebook to check for any defaults. (scratches, keyboard flex, bad assembly, seeing if the notebook wasn't tilting to one side, ...) Next I started it up and checked if all the hardware I ordered was actually inside. Next I checked the screen for light bleed (there pretty much isn't any), dead pixels, grainy screen and last but defenetly not least the manufacturer. And woohoo, I was soooo happy when I saw the LG Product code in my device manager.
In the next few hours I did a complete format and upgraded my memory from 3 gig to 4 gig. (it came standard with only 3)
This thing is just brilliant.
On a side note, I also bought the Zalman ZM-NC1000 notebook cooler which works great. -
XPS 1530 - T9300 2.5GHz, 4GB RAM, 250GB 7200RPM HDD, 8600GT, 1680X1050 LCD, Intel Wifi N, Bluetooth, etc.

Ordered on 4/28. ESD is 5/28. -
Just got my new Vostro 1500 today (orded it yesterday with 3-5 day shipping, I can't believe it got here already).
- Core 2 Duo T7250 2.0 GHz
- 1GB RAM (will upgrade soon to at least 3GB)
- 15.4" Widescreen with Truelife WXGA
- 120GB HDD 5400 RPM
- GeForce 8600M GT 256MB
- DVD burner
Only cost $635 including shipping. -
Got the following scratch/dent model for $2500:
Dell XPS M1730 (sapphire blue)
Intel X9000 CPU (2.8 - 3.4ghz core2duo)
NVidia 8800GTX SLI video
4gigs RAM
200 gig 7200rpm freefall sensing HD
DVDRW / BluRay drive
Windows Vista Premium
802.11 a/g wireless + BlueTooth
When the unit came in, one of the blue lid plates had a 1" scratch, 1 LED cover gaming light was out, and the LCD has some weird discoloration at the center of the screen. I contacted Dell XPS Premiere Support. After several incorrect parts being shipped my way, I'm only 1 gray cover plate short of having an like-new system. Considering that I saved over $1800, it's still quite a bargain! I should see the final component tomorrow along with the Dell tech. Needless to say, I'm a very happy customer -

ok, its been over a week now since I got my new XPS (in sig) and I LOVE IT!!!! its perfect in (nearly) every single way. It took me a while to get it going exactly the way I wanted....put up x64 Vistas, worked the drivers a little bit, then I changed the folders : \Users\ABC location to different partition, changed the settings of Media center folder management......but its a very very good computer, very quiet. I got the AUO screen-AMAZING. the best viewing angles I have seen on any laptop so far....plus great crystal clear colors..... and even though its glossy, the does absorb some light (my brother has A6J and its like a mirror...mines so much better :-D ) so just letting you guys know...
-
That was fast....I placed my order Yesterday and it was in "production" all day and this morning I checke dmy email and it shipped yesterday as well. I hope it gets here soon 3-5 day shipping. Anyone know how itll come? I remember FEDEX shipped my last dell laptop.

I just received my M1530 today. The Blu-Ray drive doesn't work, but a tech guy is coming out to replace it later this week, and there is a single stuck pixel in the center of an otherwise perfect screen. As this was a Dell Outlet computer, I was shocked that I got an LG. It is just gorgeous.
What should I do about the pixel? It bothers me a lot, but Dell won't replace the screen. I would have to return it and wait for another outlet deal. -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
i think there are videos / programs that can some times "unstick" stuck pixels and some times fix dead pixels as well
-
That's what I have been trying- I'm hoping that a few hours of the flashing will make the thing go away.
-
Well I finally purchased a Dell 1510 Laptop. I went for the base config.
Celeron 540 1.86Ghz
Intel J integrated Graphics x3100
1 GB memory 667Mhz
80GB HD
DVD/CDRW Combo Slot drive
Dell wireless 1395 mini PCI

65W Power Adapter
15.4" Widescreen(1280 x 800) with Anti-Glare Coating
No bluetooth, No camera
Windows Vista Home basic
£270.33 (Inc VAT and Delivery)
Order date 09/05/2008
EDD 06/06/2008
This is the cheapest configuration. I did want the Nvidia 8400gm, but Dell were charging £100 pounds extra. Not worth it. At least I can be confident it won't be too toasty or loud. I hate noisy laptops. I think the Celerons are
an under-rated cpu. I can always upgrade it myself later on assuming the it isn't soldered onto the motheboard.
Dell are one of the few companies that still do anti-glare screens. I often use a black background with white text. It's just easier on the eyes. Those mirror screens would just reflect too much.
I try to avoid Bloatware and use the more efficient open source alternatives.
The most demanding App will be Quake 3 cpm. I should be able to squeeze 100 fps out of it once I drop the resolution and lower other graphics options. I will even watch some hi def videos, only the 1K ones though.
I will be rejecting the Windows Vista EULA and installing a previous version of XP Prof. I may apply for a refund on Vista and MS Works. Someone else managed to successfully do it on this forum. An oem version of Vista Home Basic is worth about £50.
Couldn't find any reviews of this laptop yet. So I am putting my trust in Dell. Shame about the estimated delivery date. They do warn of delays on the configuration pages. Hopefully it will be brought forward. -

I got a new XPS M1530! Great except it doesn't come with gigabit ethernet. Big let down but still happy overall.
I installed Vista 64-bit and seems to work well.
But having a software issue with a program I use... not sure if it is 64-bit bug or not. The application seems to work on 32-bit Vista.
XPS M1530 Vista WEI score = 5.1
Dell XPS 720 score = 5.3 -
Loving my new 1530 thus far. The LED hurts my eyes in a good way. Only gripe thus far is the speaker/sound quality. Not too great, but man this thing is fast!
