Hi guys,
I'm a newbie here who after a lot of researching (2 months)has narrowed down my search to the Alienware M18x or the Dell Precision M6600 workstation.
Both would be configured with the i7 2920xm processors, 16gb Ram (1600mhz), SSD drives. I'm going to be using them mainly for live recording as well as general music production & djing & a tiny bit of gaming. They are both great & powerful enough machines, but my main concern is with DPC latency, especially when i'm live recording audio... are there any issues with this with any of these 2 machines? do any of these have Pro A/V, like the previous precision laptops had? I would really appreciate any info on this.
Many Thanks,
Peace!! -
That would be the best place to ask. You probably won't get a lot of responses in this threat.

I'm not an avid gamer. I'm not an engineer. I'll be using the laptop at home and at work. I'll be using it for accessing large database files on disk and hash tables in memory. All 8 threads will be maxed for hours on end with the main programs I use. I'll be using it for editing home videos. I'll be using it for every other mundane task one uses a computer for.
What do I think about these computers? Well, the HP seems to have oodles of options. It has a 3D screen (which seems like a gimmick...but hey, it's there), though the HP website states that it only has a 45% color gamut, and I've never heard of such a thing. I can't seem to find out which manufacturer's screen is in the DELL, so other than the fact that one screen is 3D and the other is not I have no idea which is better...though I would think DELL's MUST be better than 45% (typo on HP website?)
I wish they had a blu-ray burner, but the HP has a player while the DELL has DVD+/-RW. Dual hard drives is nice, so as to have an OS and a database drive...and the HP has two 640's, while the DELL only has one 250. I have a 256 gig SSD waiting for the winner as well. I don't like that there are only two ram slots on the HP while the DELL has four, but it seems that the HP will have 6 gig while the DELL only has 2 (not to worry...2x4 gig Kingston P&P modules are waiting). Nor do I like the fact that the video card is not upgradeable on the Envy...and to start, the DELL has a better graphics card. The DELL does not have Optimus (ATI card instead), while the ENVY does have switchable graphics. I get two batteries with the HP. Dell has a 3 year warranty, the HP has 2 years.
But..the Envy is about $400 LESS. And let's face it...these computers are already at end of life when you get right down to it: Ivy Bridge chips will not be compatible with either chipset, and are only months away, with their superior IGP, PCIE 3.0, etc, etc. Sure, I can plunk in more memory or a 2920xm or 2940xm if they ever make one...but still...ivy is coming, and I can't see spending $1000 on a future chip upgrade. Nor can I see spending $400 more right now if I can't justify it.
So all told, it looks like she got a better deal than I did...when it comes to most of the tangible specs. Or did she? What do YOU think? Am I missing something? I really liked the DELL when I configured it, but does the HP's extras outweigh what the DELL offers...and what is that exactly? -
I've had the L502x for about 2 weeks now. It's my first and last Dell product

Can't believe my last post in here was around 5 years ago. All things need upgrading eventually so I've replaced my D630 with a E6420!
Specs:
1600x900 Screen
Core i5 2540m
4 GB of RAM
250 GB HDD (7200 RPM of course!)
Windows 7 Pro 32 bit....that'll be changed straight away
NVIDIA NVS 4200M with Optimus switchable graphics
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, webcam, backlit keyboard, the whole shebang!
Can't wait for it to arrive! Should be here on friday! -
1st posting on this forum!
I bought my 1st laptop, a Dell Inspiron 14R (N4110), ard 3 mths back. Original specs were as follows:
CPU: Intel 2nd Gen Core i5-2410M (2.3Ghz, 2.9Ghz turbo)
RAM: 4GB Samsung DDR3-1333Mhz SODIMM RAM
Mobo: Dell OEM Mobo (Intel HM67 Chipset)
GFX: Intel HD Graphics (from Intel i5-2410M)
AMD Radeon HD 6630M (1GB GDDR3 VRAM)
ODD: Internal Slim SATA DVD Writer
HDD: WD Scorpio Blue 640GB 2.5" SATA2 HDD
WLAN: Intel Wireless-N 1030
However, being a modder, i soon made modifications to the laptop. now it's tentatively as follows:
CPU: Intel 2nd Gen Core i7-2720QM (quad-core, 2.2Ghz, 3.3Ghz turbo)
RAM: 8GB Kingston DDR3-1333Mhz SODIMM RAM
Mobo: Dell OEM Mobo (Intel HM67 Chipset)
GFX: Intel HD Graphics (from Intel i7-2720QM)
AMD Radeon HD 6630M (1GB GDDR3 VRAM)(overclocked to 680Mhz/880 Mhz, performance slightly exceeds that of the commonly seen Nvidia Geforce GT 540M)
ODD: Internal Slim SATA DVD Writer
HDD: 120GB OCZ Vertex 3 SATA3 SSD
WLAN: Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230
what i like abt this laptop:
1) CPU fan doesnt spin when CPU chip is cool enough. saves batt and is dead quiet. at idle, believe it or not, CPU temp (after mod) is at 48 deg. fan doesnt spin, so i can use the laptop for normal work with 0dB anytime. the cool temp is also because i reapplied thermal paste for the heatsink contacts.
2) has 2 X USB3.0 ports for quick data transfer
now i'm waiting for my secret stash of DDR3-1600Mhz SODIMM RAM to arrive for final build test. -
I just settled for the 15.6" 720p display because for the same price as upgrading to the B+RG 1080p ($150) I could buy a 23" FHD 1080p monitor. Now I'm realizing that the latter may not be B+RG LCD. Basically I'm asking what exactly does FHD refer to?
Cheers,

Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Well you can always buy a professional monitor with higher color gamut, they just cost $$$. They also offer features like a useful stand that can tilt/rotate, and IPS screens.
I think the actual 1080p swap was 150 + the 1080p LVDS cable (20) -
-
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
See this thread on how to swap 1080p screen for L501x/L502x, it should be the same part number. Last I checked it was ~120-150 for the screen and 20 for the full channel LVDS cable.

Received my XPS 17 (LP02X) a few days ago. I loved the aluminum body and the sturdy built, but upon firing it up and testing it, I'm not as all happy due to these factors:
1.) The power connector (male plug) doesn't like to stay put and tends to fall out when I adjust for comfort, the power got disconnected three times on me. Dell suggested a tech to come out and replace the whole motherboard with a supposedly different jack. The last thing I wanted was for someone to come out and mess/hack open my brand new computer trying replace something that might or might not solve anything, so I declined.
2.) The overall length of the AC cord is way too short, but I can purchase a longer cord (the removable part that plugs from the 'brick' to wall). Dell only makes a 3-feet length for this model whereas the standard is 6ft. They do have longer cords but they are 2-pronged unlike the XPS with 3 prongs.
3.) There is a bright blue light, it's actually a ring around the plug end that stays lit effortlessly. It's an indicator that tells you if it is drawing power properly, but very annoying indeed. Most laptops have them on the power brick with a very small green light, but Dell is something else and it is brighter than everyone else's.
Other things on the back (including the power jack of course): is the status indicator for the HDD activity which I don't understand. Why on earth did they put this on the back when I needed to know the activity of my hard drive? Plus there are two USB 3.0 plugs which are also on the back, including the ethernet jack (not a big deal on this one since it 'locks' when plugged in), and HDMI video input.
These are the ONLY reasons why I am bothered by this deal and prompted to have it returned. I've searched carefully and there is absolutely nothing in the market at the moment that can match the specs of this Dell without having me to fork out at least another $300:
- The Intel Core i7 2670QM Processor
- 8GB DDR3 RAM (memory). Most only offered 6GB unless you pay more!
- nVidia Graphics card in addition to the Intel one.
- B-D ROM player with CD-DVD-RW burner.
- The screen resolution is Full High Definition (1080P) compared to most at 900p. Not only that, the screen is 'Matte', and not glossy! The only downside to the 1080 is that it makes the fonts looks smaller, but downloading 'NoSquint' had solved the issue.
- Hard Drive -- 1TB (2 x 500GB) at 7200 rpm compared to most others at only 500-750GB/5400RPM.
- Aluminum Body
- JBL Speakers with Subwoofer. The sound is better than most of my previous laptops but not as great as I'd thought.
- Two USB 3.0 Inputs compared to usually one.
- The Back-lit keyboard. Although this can be customized but the Dell Keyboard and Mouse Clicks feels really nice and soft!
Overall this is a very solid built machine. It doesn't feel cheap like the Toshiba (which I almost bought with less features and costs more) even though Toshibas are very reliable. This Dell felt similar to my little 14" Acer Timeline - nice solid aluminum body instead of the shiny/glossy 'dust magnet' plastic.
Dell had issued me an RMA to return this laptop. I have a few days to decide until I drop this thing off to UPS. I re-checked on an ASUS but I'll have to opt for a smaller sized screen (15.6), no Blu-Ray, only 6GB Memory, no HD screen, no Back-lit Keys but costs $100 more (came out to same with taxes) and ergonomically, the ASUS is much better with most things up front and to the sides. Although the power jack is on the back, but it is on the right corner and I'm pretty sure it is snug-fit, unlike the Dell where it doesn't lock in. I will continue to search for more options. -

I just replaced my old Dell Latitude E4200 (Core 2 Duo SU9300 1.2GHz) with a new Dell Latitude E6320. The E6320 cost me only $479 + tax with coupon. The only downside is that this E6320 does not come standard with an SSD. Dell's website says the laptop should arrive on or before 1/25/2012
I also have an XPS 17 L702x and it is working fine, but the touchpad once in a blue moon, does weird stuff. I've decided to sell my XPS 17 to a friend or someone in my family or ebay it. I have had the XPS 17 for more than two months. It is very hard to carry a 17 inch laptop to college classes along with 15-20 pounds of textbooks. I do have a souped up Dell Optiplex 755 that I can play games on. -
Just picked up a Dell Inspiron 15R for my wife. Her POS HP finally took a crap(never really ran good).

Hi
I received my Dell XPS 15 laptop a few days ago. Its a great laptop and the design is awesome, similar to Mac without the horrible OS. I am finding some of the many problems that other users are encountering. I have yet to face dell support, but have also found them to be helpful most of the time. -
I have bought Dell Inspiron i15N-2728BK 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
Intel Intel Core i3-2370M 2.4GHz 2.40 GHz
6 GB DIMM
500 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
15.6-Inch Screen
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
So far so good. I've only had it a few weeks but it does everything it says it does. Good value for the price I paid. Nothing to fancy, but it was a good buy at under $500. -
Just took the plunge and ordered another Dell laptop after a happy and problem free 2.5 years with Dell XPS 15 L501x.
I went for Inspiron 17R SE 7720 with i5 3230, GT650m and 1080p screen.

Well, Just put my order in for a new inspiron 13 5000. Its the base model, but I am upgrading to 16gb ram and a 1tb SSD as soon as I test the unit and make sure it's working correctly. As soon as that happens, its under the knife for a heart transplant. 578.99 plus about 300 bucks for the upgrade. Much less than getting dell to do it for me. can't wait to try out this new notebook. Been using an older acer 17" and a 2007 MacBook.
-
Suppose it's not new (2015) but I did recently pay $150 at a pawn shop for a Latitude E7250 and an additional $115 on eBay for a 1080P touch display assembly to replace the stock WXGA assembly. i5-5300U, 12gb RAM (4gb when I bought; I happened to have an 8gb chip laying around), 256gb SSD. For $265 combined, I feel like I got a good deal.

one week with my new from dell outlet 3168 4gb 500hd, replaced the hd with sandisk plus 240gb ssd keeping at 4gb ram since the n3710 really will not do much better at 8gb. I have my upgrades complete in one of my 2 new dell computers. I have 16gb ram and a Seagate 2tb firecuda drive in my 13 5000. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. Its much faster, fluid and overall just much better. my wife's 11 3000 2 in 1 is getting the same upgrade. 8gb ram, and 1tb firecuda!
-
Just bought a used E5470
-i5 6440HQ
-4GB of RAM (Will be upgrading afterwards)
-120Gb m.2 SSD (Will be upgrading, I'll try to get the SATA cable + caddy, else I'll have to pay extra for a m.2 SSD, quite expensive here)
-FHD matte IPS screen
-Backlit keyboard with trackpoint
First thing I had to do was crack it open to loosen the hinges, they were too tight and they twisted the back side of the assembly when opening and closing the lid. After that, a very solid laptop -
heads up for anyone wanting the inspiron 11 3000 series. You cannot upgrade the ram. It is soldered to the board. The hard drive can be upgraded however. It still chugs along quite nicely however. Once I get the firecuda installed in it, even more so!
-
Received my 7567 last week. It was short a power supply. Normally I would refuse delivery but I'm in a time crunch and I figured I could get the power supply faster than a replacement computer.
Received $50 in dell bucks as compensation for the inconvenience, it's not a huge amount considering I spent $2200 on the computer.
Was able to limp along with a 65W power supply to keep the computer charged up to surf with and install a few things.
The corners on this computer are sharp which tends to dig into my wrists.
Opened it up, installed a crucial MX300 1TB SSD, noticed it has 1 slot free for ram, which hopefully will be an option for me soon.
Have a windows 10 pro key through school so I upgraded to that from the included 10 home. I don't believe it had to download much so that was a bonus.
sometimes the thing seems laggy, will have to track that down. probably a dell service -
same with my 15 5000 MLO. sometimes it lags...not often but every now and then....I have an SSHD and 16gb of ram in mine. let me know what you find causing it.
-
-
What did you disable? Like I said, It seems to be more of an edge issue than OS issue...but worth a shot.
I got it done on my wife's 11 3000....WHAT A DIFFERENCE....this machine is so snappy and fast now! my 13 5000 the same way! thanks for reminding me...I also installed memu on both for apps we cannot get on windows 10. -
-
I wont use any other browser other than edge. It's the best...
-
Your mileage may vary with that.
-
Nah...works great for me. The only issue is some things will not work in edge that work in chrome...so I just use chrome when I have to.
