Dell Inspiron 1440 (Best Buy model). $449 + tax.
Specs:
-Intel "Pentium" dual-core T4300 (actually it's a Core 2 Duo with a 1MB L2 Cache) 2.1Ghz [exactly the same CPU as Core 2 Duo T6500 with smaller L2 cache and rated by PassMark with a higher score than the T6500]
Independent hardware diagnostics identify this CPU as Core 2 Duo.
-3 GB PC2-6400 800mhz RAM
-250 GB Western Digital SATA hard disk
-14" backlit LED screen (1366x768)
-Intel 4500MHD integrated GPU
-Dell 1397 b/g Wireless & Realtek Ethernet 10/100
-Memory card reader and ExpressCard 34 slot
-DVD +/-RW (dual-layer)
-3 USB ports, VGA, ethernet and headphone/microphone
-Built in 1.3 mp Webcam and integrated microphone array
-Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
-Battery good for 5 hours + on low settings
For the price, you get a pretty powerful laptop. My last laptop was an Asus U80a with a T6500 and this computer ($200 less) is just as fast.
It's a "plain-Jane" consumer laptop without a lot of extras like lots of indicator lights and HDMI port. HOWEVER, if processing power is what you're interested in, you can't beat the T4300 for the price. I was amazed to see that it's rated higher than a Core 2 Duo T7700 (according to PassMark).
It comes with recovery disks, which is nice, so you don't have to burn them even though it gives you the opportunity to do so. After the upgrades, I clean-installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and it really flies now. -
New Dell 1645 XPS Studio.
What a great concept and a mess of problems with Dell.
- Took 3 months to ship.
- Leather came off after the 3rd time opening the laptop causing the glue to stick all over the back of the laptop, top of the laptop, and even on the screen.
- Creative X-Fi software was not included by Dell and their support doesn't even know how to reship the CD.
- RGBLED screen listed as WLED Screen - Dell CS has no idea if 320-8335 is the RGB screen or WLED screen. They insisted it was the wrong screen and said they would send out a replacement.
- Dell customer support kindly configured a replacement order (with the correct screen listed as RGBLED) and then 2 weeks later canceled the replacement laptop and reconfigured it with the wrong screen (again) and now replaced the BluRay drive with a DVD drive claiming that they don't ship the XPS 16 with BluRay anymore. They also changed the RGBLED back to a WLED screen. What are they thinking? That's a ~$400 price difference - but no offer to refund my money.
I've had the XPS now for 2 weeks and other than the problems above, it's a nice machine. I am hopeful my replacement fiasco will get figured out soon and I can finally move forward with a laptop 4+ months after ordering it. I've been a loyal fan of Dell for nearly a decade, but the issues with this XPS are really bad.
Anyone else have these kinds of problems with the XPS Studio 16? -
It is precisely because of these kinds of complaints that I never order CTO (configure to order) computers online anymore. If I can't buy it in a store, stock model, then I'm not gonna buy it. That way, if there's a problem, I don't have to deal with idiots on the phone and don't have shipping and waiting hassles -- I just take it back to the store.
-
-
My replacement should arrive today. Dell agreed to refund/credit some of the money back to me since they currently do not offer BluRay on the 1645 and have problems with the RGBLED/WLED confusion. No one at Dell seems to know what's up with that.
-
my laptop arrives tomorrow. I think I got the first 1647 on the forums! I am stoked, can't wait to get it. Mini-review and pics will be posted for those who care.
-
i just got a dell studio 17 multy touch.. its a very great Laptop.
-
My Studio 1558 just arrived this morning here in my office. Since Im at work I really cant play around too much with it yet. Specs are in my sig. I was reading some comments about the 15.6" and Full HD resolution and was beginning to think things may be too small but, IMO, the 15.6" widescreen format in Full HD with the 125% text setting is fine. Sharp, clean text and images with no blurring borders or anything.
I really cant wait to take this puppy out for a full on test run. -
Ordered the XPS 1645 on Vday! A love affair to remember.

Ordered Friday March 5th, EDD: March 26th, 2010 -
If you do not mind me asking, what is it costing and did you find any coupons, enjoy your new system!!!!
-
If youre talking to me the laptop itself was 1300 but i also decided to invest in a 1tb external hd, a backpack for the laptop and some Laptop accessories kit (from the picture it looked like it had some kind of cooling unit to put the laptop on and a small wireless mouse) totalling just under 1800. No coupons tho.
So excited -
Received my Adamo XPS today. Brilliant piece of engineering and design. Love it. Plus this keyboard is an absolute dream to type on. Although the right shift key is small and its annoying me.
What makes this computer even better is I paid only US$800 for it. And it effectively is brand new. It only came out of the factory 30 days ago (as found out from the Dell service tag) and has no scratches or marks on it. I believe it was a cancelled order.
Also I'm quite surprised that despite its irregular design its actually not that hard to type with on a table or even your lap. In fact I'm using it on my lap right now.
One cool thing I just found out right now is that the capacitive latch works from left to right AND right to left. And the little blue LEDs follow the direction you swipe it in. How funky is that. From all the videos I saw of it, people swipe left to right. So I assumed it was a left to right action only.
Also good to know that the Adamo XPS is really limited edition given its short shelf life. Might help with resale value in a few months when I decide I'm bored and want something new. Although, it's still on sale in the Asia-Pacific region, where I'm from. -
Purchased my first e4200 from ebay (hey, its new to me!) that will be a replacement to my xt. I am upgrading for the faster processors (1.6 v. 14) and SSD. this will be my first SSD so i am excited!
-
Purchased the Studio XPS 1647 from Dell in January and am loving it 100%. Its awesome and I'd recommend it to anyone

19/03/2010 - Shipped
23/03/2010 - DELIVERED (10.28 AM)
Cannot find any flaw, right from ordering to delivery.
Before ordering I had a online chat with Dell representative on 10 March and he told me I would get my laptop on or before 25/03/10. So true !!
After receiving, I updated the bios to A04 and did a clean install. The maching is working like a charm (knock the wood). I did some gaming and CAD simulations, no problems. Really loving it. This is the first time I orderd with Dell and I am glad that I did not backup after looking so many negative reviews about Dell service. I think everyone is different and if one had a bad experience doesn't mean other also have the same. I got my machine for £720.00. Can't be more happier ..

8GB Ram
Some dual core processor
Nvidia graphics card
A harddrive
no webcam or fingerprint reader
DVD drive
Bluetooth and Intel wireless card
Being a refurbished machine, it does have a minor defect in the screen bezel where the bezel is slightly popped out, but I can probably glue it into place.
I must say that this screen is beautiful. Viewing angles are excellent. Web pages have the most crisp text because of the 145+ DPI. I can open visual studio with tools on both sides, top and bottom. This is a step up from my previous laptop that had 1600x1200 pixies and definitely a huge step up from my netbook which had 1024x600 pixes (what a scam those netbooks are). -
Ordered a Dell Studio 17 last week. Specs:
Intel Core i7 720QM
4096 mb 1333 mhz Dual Channel DDR 3
1 GB ATI MObility Radeon HD560V --> asked for another one
500 GB (7.200 rpm)
Blu-Ray drive
Dell Wireless Mini Card (802.11 b/g) --> asked for an n-version
9-cell battery
17.3" High Definition + --> asked for full HD
As you can see, I asked for several adjustments, including backlit keyboard. These options are not available on the internet, but are available by phone.
Got the okay by phone, but order hasn't been adjusted.
Guess I'm doing something wrong, since I paid over 1300 euros for nothing special... -
Hey so I suppose I just got a new XPS M1710, as Dell just replaced my motherboard.
They did this to "solve" the overheating issue with this system that is very common... Unfortunately, loading/playing a game still causes the core to break 80 degrees C and cause the system to overheat and automatically turn off.
Since I went through all of the steps Dell offers for support (1. In-Home replacement of CPU/Heatsink/Motherboard 2. In-factory replacement of those + testing 3. Corporate HQ testing) without success, the next step is replacement with a new system. I have not heard back from either of the two senior analysts who last worked on my system, even though I have the premium "next-day" warranty service.
This is getting to be beyond pathetic on Dell's part.

Mr. Stone.
Antony Richmond sent me your case for review. The notes that I have show that your system is having an overheating issue. It looks like We have replaced parts and you are still having an issue with the system. Tech support had suggested that we have your system sent to our service depot for repair, but this was not acceptable. Mr. Richmond has offered to have the system sent to our corporate office where he can repair the system in our lab, but this was not acceptable either, and you have requested for the computer to be replaced. Unfortunately, Dell does not have justification to replace this system and repair is the only option that we are required to do according to the terms of your service contract. If you were to send your system to Antony Monday, we can have it repaired and back to you before the end of the week. Please let me know if you would like to send your system to Antony, or to the repair depot, but it would be a faster repair to send the system to Antony.
Thank You

I just left you a message- please call me back when you are free.
I already sent the system to the service depot for "repair and extensive testing," and that did not fix the problem (the motherboard was replaced for the second time).
I have now been through 30 days of effort and broken promises. I do not want to try repairing it for a third time, and I think this is very reasonable.
I simply want a new (non-refurbished system) that works.
Thanks

I sent this to David on Friday, Mar 26 in the AM.
He quoted me a 5 business-day turnaround, and promised it wouldn't take 10 days like the depot.
As of tomorrow it will be 10 days.
I'm tired of waiting and empty promises. I'd like a replacement computer sent to me tomorrow.

I have been running your system through very intensive tests in an attempt to make it suffer from heat related symptoms. The system has not shown any signs of issues even under intensive video and processor load, both running at 100% for days at a time.
This has of course affected the turnaround time because based on your description I expected to see some issues or symptoms while running the system at full capacity.
At this time I cannot justify fulfilling your request for a replacement system based on the warranty. I will leave the next action decision up to you, I can continue to test the unit looking for any hardware related issues, or I can send it back today so that you will have it back tomorrow. Please reply to all on this message with your decision as I am out of the office and Jonathan Royer would be actually taking the action in my absence.

Heat symptoms only seem to appear with intensive RAM (& processor & video) usage. When all 3 are running at max capacity for an hour what temperature is the computer?

We have been testing the unit here in my lab for several days now, essentially since it arrived. The utilities that we have been using to test do stress test the RAM while testing the video and processor, hard drive etc. It basically maximizes the use of all major components in the system simultaneously in an attempt to overheat the system. We have had no thermal trips or thermal events on the system during this testing.
To answer your previous question the temperature , after the system runs all major components at maximum capacity for several hours (most of the day) the thermal sensor reads at 61 degrees Celsius.
I can certainly understand your anxiousness with being without your system. I am cannot think of any additional testing that can be done with your system in an attempt to drive an overheating event. I will also say that based on the thermal event tables and logs there does not show to be any previous thermal events on the system either. At this time I will be sending your system back to you, unless you have any other testing requests while we have it here.
Thank you,
David Fite

It had been going above 80 degrees (and immediately shutting off) but 61 degrees should be fine.

David,
Attempts to address the overheating problem have failed.
Every time my girlfriend (or I) tries to play a game with intensive graphics (e.g. The Sims 3) the computer overheats and shuts off within minutes.
I took a video and uploaded it to my website, you can watch/download it at
www.usethiswebsite.com/Video/dellg3t4rc1.3gp
You (Dell) are clearly not able to fix this problem as you have tried replacing the motherboard twice and the graphics card.
This is an issue that is inherent to the setup of the machine, as you can read anywhere online:
dell xps m1710 overheating - Google Search
I need a working machine. I will no longer accept your faulty replacements (faulty because the inherent setup is flawed) or inadequate testing.
Please send me one. Upon receipt I will return the inherently defective 1710, if needed.
Please send me a tracking ASAP.
Thanks,
Will

Alright I'll take this to the blogs and forums. I can't believe how awful Dell support is. I have not received a response in a week when I have a "next day" warranty. -
WOW my friend.... You deserve a brand new laptop on top of a refund for all that hassle.. Sorry to hear about it all man. I wish you luck.
-
Typical Dell... I'll never get one from them, better to buy em' used IMO.. I'm a new user here, (or it's been so long since i've logged in I forgot everything). I just got a Dell e1705 and this thing is WICKED!
I had an ASUS a6km, but caught on fire & smoked out a couple capacitors while running my cakewalk & my grand piano.. (laptop still works tho!) So the guy I'm working for sent me the e1705, the loaded version... 17" 1920X1200 screen, subwoofer, I can't find one thing to complain about!!!
Only con is that the 7800 go is underclocked and locked so you can't change it, but that's nothing that a quick BIOS flash didn't take care ofwent from 200/350 to 343/760 without the GPU going over 80!
My future plans though, are to at least rip this bad boy apart, change the x-over on the sub, and replace the stock pads with some AS5 or ceramique.. which works better, do ya thinks? -
Grats to everyone on their new laptops .

Got my Inspiron 1545 in my sig about 5 days ago. Forgot about this thread and then stumbled across it. I like it just as much as all my other dell laptops
-
I just got my new Inspiron 15R just over a week ago, and so far it's been great!! Here are the specs:
Intel core i3-350m
WIN 7 home premium
4gb DDR3 Ram
500 GB HDD (5400RPM)
Intel integrated GMA HD
Dell 1501 half-mini N wireless card
6 cell battery
1.3 MP webcam
8X Dual layer CD/DVD Burner
This has been a great machine so far, pretty fast, runs cool, display is excellent. (I don't game so I don't need dedicated graphics) I have watched a few HD movies through the HDMI output on my 1080P Television, and let me tell you it was fantastic,as good as my Blu-Ray player. Overall very pleased with my purchase. For the price and what it can do you can't beat this machine!! -
I ordered my Dell studio xps 16 with an i5 last friday, still waiting yet to get it.
-
Hello guys! I've recently arranged a purchase for the Dell Studio 1557 i7 - 720QM. These are its characteristics :
intel core i7 720 qm,
4gb ddr 3
ati mobility radeon hd 4570 512 mb
500 gb 7200 rpm hdd
720p 15.6" screen
win 7 64 bit.
However I 've seen some comments about this notebook regarding its temperature which made me reconsider my purchase. I do not need the notebook for intense game playing (just for PES 2010). Will i face any problems? Should i reconsider it and look for another choice?

A few questions for those of you who are more familiar with this laptop:
Have any of you experienced slowness from Dell bloatware, if there is any? If so, how would I go about removing them? Dell only included the resource CD and not the OS CD :/. There's 24GB used by preinstalled programs and whatnot. Is that a lot? Seems like it...
Also, the CD/DVD drive is VERY loud when accessing a disc. Is this normal? -

Hi everyone,
I just bought a Dell XPS 15 L501x and so far the only problem 've faced is due to the Video card - whenever i play a game 60-80% of the time the system crashes! I have to play just with the lowest settings and it sucks!
The games for which this happened are Witcher, Command & Conquer 3, Supreme Commander, neither too old nor too new and not even at the highest settings.
My system config is :
