    Hey guys, :)
I have just received my brand new Dell Studio 1555 with the HD4570 512MB.

I have just formatted-reinstalled Vista 32bit ultimate SP2 but I can't install the Catalyst 9.5 using Mobility Modder...
The program doesn't support our card as you can see:

    http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php

How can I install the Catalyst 9.5?

    Thank you

is it easy to change the cpu on the 1555, i mean fo you just undo a few screws to access the motherboard? I planning to get the base CPU as I have a P8600 that's been sitting on my shelf for a couple of months.

hunter - what do you mean by bad?

Ichiban - Getting to the CPU is not easy. You need to take the motherboard out of the chasis to get to it. There is a Dell manual with details. I am planning on doing it when it arrives so will let you know how I get on

My tracking status is just saying CALL LOCK OUT, god knows what that means, damn walsh western :(

Cheers ninja2000, hopefully you get yours soon as I need to order it b4 the 17th when the 10% voucher ends.

btw is the height of 15.6" screen the same as the 15.4"? maybe the extra 0.2" makes it look shorter.

    http://en.community.dell.com/blogs/...009/06/02/dell-windows-7-upgrade-program.aspx

No one seems to be waiting for this supposed free/cheap windows 7 upgrade that is rumoured to be in for the offering sometime after 26 June or 1 July or whatever. I.e. many of you seem to be buying the laptop now, precluding yourselves from this "upgrade" option.

    Am I missing something?

i.e. do none of you (who've now bought the laptop) care too much about windows 7?

Or is the laptop so good, you can't wait? :p

the sound is not loud enough.. when i play a video, its sound is very low..like half of what i get while playing a music mp3 file..
mp3 sound is louder..but not clear.. its my first laptop and none of of close friends have a laptop.. so i don't know how loud the usual laptop speaker is..
maybe some1 else can tell ..

isnt' dell 1555 supposed to have "Integrated Stereo Sound with subwoofer"
because i couldn't say the presence of subwoofer.. it was not even close to my normal basic creative 2.1 speakers wit low bass..
i came to know about it only after 2 days of placing my order.. if i knew i would have waited..its just a month.. i have tried windows rc1 on my P4 PC..

    Just received today...
    Everything was fine.

I decided to format and reinstall Vista 32 Ultimate SP2 but once I finish the VGA card (4570 512MB) is not recognized...

    Free Image Hosting by ImageBam.com

I tried to install the Catalyst but the driver cannot be installed because "Impossible to boot up the peripheral (code 10)"...

    Is that broken or what?

    edit

I fixed it... we are obliged to install Dell's graphic driver...

Once installed, Is it possible to unistall and install the Catalyst 9.5?

I should be ok, I probably need to take pictures of the components and cables before removing them or else I won't remember what goes where :p please let us know how you got on, oh and also what wireless card did you get with it? I might buy the Intel 5300 and upgrade it myself but not sure if the laptop will have the extra antenna which the card needs.

I kept the basic dell wireless because

    a. dell charge a fortune for the 5300, you can pick them up for less than half the price

    b. I have a 5300 sat here ready with my cpu :)

It does come with the three antennas pre installed into the chasis

new to this thread looking to purchase this laptop next month after the windows 7 coupon comes out. I'm Upgrading from my Dell Inspiron 9200 that i bought back in Dec. 2004.

Quick question the upgrade to the ATI graphics 256 or 512 is for purely gaming? Or does it offer better display of colors/video for the computer? Im asking b/c I'm not a PC gamer anymore and do all my gaming on my PS3.

Anything wrong w/ sticking w/ the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD? Is this graphics card better than my current 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9700?

if you are not a gamer you will get no benefit from upgrading 256 to 512mb

There is nothing wrong with the intel if you plan to do no gaming. I think the GMA4500 can even handle blueray.

The ATI is better for playing HD content though so if the upgrade isnt too expensive you might want to consider it.

A pro of the intel GMA is longer battery life

thanks for the quick response. Its either the inter GMA or the ATI 256. Not sure how important HD content is for me. Would I be able to handle youtube, vimeo, and hulu content that is in HD w/ the intel GMA??? Since it can handle bluray which is Full 1080p that should be a breeze right?

Thinking about it, I am need to check the gma4500 for bluray, apparantly you need the 4500hd, I am not sure which version the 1555 comes with. will check and get back to you.

Edit - I cant see the GMA listed anymore on the uk site to check

really? how big of a difference?

I plan on getting 4GB of Ram and really can only get one upgrade. Its either...
    256 ATI Card ($75 upgrade)
    2.2 T6600 ($50 upgrade)
    9 cell battery ($40 upgrade)
900p HD display LED ($50 upgrade)

Like I said I dont plan on playing games. Just want get fast performance best bang for my buck.

Video cards make a huge difference. Without, all video memory is taken from the ram I believe... so you lose overall system performance. By having dedicated video, the system as a whole works better and graphics will be dramatically better. But then again, if you really don't need it.... no sense in doing it. I would say the average consumer wouldn't need it......

Your system will not be any faster overall with the ATi card. The Intel 4500MHD, as has been mentioned, is sufficient for HD video decoding. If you don't plan on gaming, I would get the 4500MHD, simply because you gain significant battery life over the ATi 4570. If you don't game or use 3D applications, then you will gain nothing from having the ATi card over the Intel integrated card.

As for the RAM being shared, it's true, but it won't all be used unless you're doing anything graphically intensive. If you have 3GB or more of RAM, I guarantee you will never notice the difference.

Personally, if I were you, I would get the 4500MHD. It will save you money and your battery will last longer, and your system will perform pretty much the same in everything except gaming. From your list of upgrade choices, I would get either the 900p display upgrade, or the 9 cell battery. If you combine the 9 cell battery with the Intel graphics, your battery life will be through the roof.

I am finding the fan slightly annoying. It comes on randomly even when all I am doing is web browsing and the sites (forums and news sites mostly) aren't really JavaScript or Flash heavy and it's winter here in NZ. I think the low hinged screen, 1080P resolution and dedicated GPU are all part of the problem. It might even be the Windows indexing but I doubt that as I don't really see a lot of disk activity.

With the 9 cell battery getting 4 hours of battery life was very easy. You might even be able to eek a lot more by lowering your screen brightness. Still haven't tried any games.

The softkey keyboard took some time to get used to. I have to say that the W, E, A, S, D, F and X keys don't feel as good as the rest of the keyboard. They make more noise than other keys and it might be because of keyboard flex in that area.

I have also formatted the laptop and installed Windows 7 RC 32 bit. Windows 7 detected everything out of the box. I manually updated the Synaptics drivers, ATI Radeon and Dell Bluetooth drivers. The Synaptics driver from their website is much better than the dumbed down driver that Dell ships. The laptop gets a Windows 7 Performance rating of 4.9. CPU: 5.8, RAM: 5.9, Graphics 2D: 4.9, Graphics 3D: 4.9, Disk: 5.9.

My laptop is: Intel Core 2 Duo P8600, 4GB G.Skill RAM (self upgraded), Toshiba 7200 RPM 16GB drive and of course Radeon 4570 256MB.

The fan should not be that annoying. I mean the only time i hear it running is when i play some games. It definitely does not come up when i am browsing or doing office chores.. The ambient room temperature in here is about 28~33*C.

Anything got loosened up when u installed the extra RAM? Check out for that.

Thanks for the help. Now I will definitely not upgrade to the ATI 256MB. And if i get better battery life w/ the 4500HD I probably will get won't opt for the 9 cell but instead will upgrade the 900p LED screen instead. I'm assuming the 2.2 T6600 won't be a huge difference from the 2.0.

Just curious how many hours of battery life would you estimate I will get w/ the 6 cell running the 4500HD video card?

Interesting the ambient temp here is less than 20C. I am sure the RAM upgrade is quite simple and nothing is in the way when you open the back panel.

What is your configuration hardware wise ipkonfig?

    One a side note...

Does anyone know how I can enable middle-button click with the Synaptics driver? The Dell driver had less features but it allowed me to click both buttons to simulate a middle-click. I couldn't find any option to turn that on in the generic Synaptics driver. There must be a way to get back that option.

    Edit:
Nevermind: Google found the "HasBothButtonFeature" registry key, which enables the middle-click.

I can barely notice a difference between my old 2.0GHz and my current 2.6GHz processor, so 2.0 to 2.2 will be nothing if you're not doing hardcore program compiling or anything like that.
My Studio 1535 with the ATi 3450 and 6-cell can usually pull just over 2 hours with some modest setting tweaks. I would bet that the 1555 with the 4500MHD can do 3 hours, possibly more if you undervolt. Of course, don't quote me on that.

wow the 1535 only gets 2hrs with the ati! I was expecting at least three hours for the 1555 with ati and 6 cell! And was expecting the 1555 with intel to have about 4 hours.

My samsung q210 does 4-5 hours with 6 cell on power saver and that has:
    P8400
    nvidia 9200 gfx
    320gb 5400 hd
    3gb ram
    5100 wireless
    bluetooth
    12" screen

You could have visited the office and got the product for yourself. At least that is what i did. I couldn't resist the temptation to hold the laptop on my hands, so was literally flying to the BD office when i heard it had arrived :p

    Some questions about my 1555:

    - What for is the 39MB FAT EISA-Configuration Partition?
    - When I activate Intel VT in BIOS, does it use more battery then? And is the performance decreased for other applications when not running a VM?

    Some weird services running:
    - I got this service running: " AEST Filters - Andrea ST Filters Service"
What is that? Do you have that also?
    - " Dock Login Service" What is that for?
    - " Seaport" Service ?!

    Order date June 5th.
    Shipped on June 13th.
I thought this would take more time. Now see how long it takes to actually deliver the laptop in Belgium. Any idea?
Expected delivery date is June 22nd but can hardly believe it would take 9 days to ship from Poland to Belgium.
