Damn! You should claim that FedEx came and took it today or something "because it was a wrongful delivery" or something and keep it :p

As per the manual, it is GDDR3.

    ^^ [gamezmaster]
I think, there is no difference in size or the display pannel... But the display has a glossy cover, so that the exact border of display can only be identified when its ON
[btw, look at your post number, lol, silly me...]

    ^^^ [ninja2000]
I actually ment the display drivers in dell site...

[sorry, i can't quote due to tech difficulties... =) ]

dell india website has put windows 7 upgrade option in their website .. http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/pro.../laptop-studio-1555?c=in&cs=indhs1&l=en&s=dhs

When i asked customer care.. they say they have no idea about it.. and they dont know whether i am eligible for upgrade..
i got my system delivered on jun 12.. anyone from india has got any idea..

    Edit: https://win7.dell.com/ or http://www.dell.com/windows7upgrade

"To be eligible for the DellTM Windows® 7 Upgrade Option program, you must purchase a Dell system between June 26, 2009 and Jaunuary 31, 2010"

i guess i will miss the oppurtunity

I'm going to try to get the upgrade... My computer was ordered on the 16th... but is now delayed and I won't get it until the 8th of July. I'm going to complain and see if I can get the upgrade.

I may do the same thing, Stabilo. I ordered my Studio on the 19th, unaware that a free upgrade was coming out a week later. Let me know how it goes, I think we should get the upgrade (especially given that it wasn't advertised beforehand so we had no way of knowing it was coming so soon).

i think i get what you mean. the whole screen surface appears to be seamless. but i think dust often gets trapped between the screen and the glossy cover which can be difficult to remove.

    haha i got post number 1555 :D

thats strange as it only seems to be weird in firefox i.e. the taskbar isnt affected. did you do a clean install? if not i'd try reinstalling the drivers and see if that helps.

I figure I got nothing to lose. They are making me wait extra days anyways. I'll probably tell them I'm not confident in Vista (because I used to have XP) and would much rather have 7 as Microsoft is saying it will be much better.

I have the new 1555 for almost a month now, I find it slow with Internet 7. I don't know how to remove all the bloatware, I am not very PC savvy, can any help me in lay terms how? I have also windows XP Professional downgrade from Dell on my PC that is what I wanted.

Can anyone advise I'm afraid I'll mess something up.

Lately I have also been getting errors messages that says Microsoft Visual C Runtime Library wants to close and then it closes my internet explorer 7 why is that happening?

A question about viewing angles for all other 1555 owners with the 1080p screen; do you find that the screen looks slightler when viewed from above and slightly darker when viewed from below?

    Thanks,

But......... i don't think there will be much possibility of dust.... the cover covers the entire lid firmely [edge to edge] like in some mp3 or mp4 players... so that actual border of the display cannot be determined when display is off...
[sorry this is what i have said before, but it seemed you are little confused...]

imo the IEs are little bulky... :D
i advise you to use any other browsers like opera, mozilla or chrome...
or upgrade your Internet explorer to 8...

I think I just found the answer to my problem with the message: Microsoft Visual C+runtime error has occured in Iexplore.exe and must close now.

When I got my 1555 it came with IE 6 so I went and upgraded to IE7 through Microsoft website.

I found this link that I just did and it seems to be running faster now with webpages, so hopefully this reset helped.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

I wonder if IE 8 is better than 7

In IE go to the Options > Connections > Lan Settings > Uncheck Automatically Detect Proxy settings

This generally makes it A LOT faster.

i was talking more about dust appearing behind the glossy cover but in front of the actual screen. it shows up on the screen and cant be removed without taking the screen apart. i might be wrong but ive seen it happen on my phone so im not sure whether it affects laptops.

anyway what is the benefit of paying more for a edge to edge display? i cant seen to find anything on google.

The edge to edge display provides more protection for the display itself. Any scratches will just be on the glass in front, rather than the actual display. It also looks nice and smooth.

I actually got edge-to-edge display simply because that was what was offered with the midnight blue (which I wanted because it is pretty and not glossy like the chainlink), but I would imagine that the benefit is mostly just in the aesthetics.

I'm thinking of getting this 1555, but I'm having difficulty deciding between integrated and dedicated GPU. I've read varying reports regarding the 4500MHD's ability to play back 1080p video files. I know that Intel claims that the chip "supports" full high definition playback, but whether it carries out this task well is another question (seeing as I have read otherwise). I have also read varying reports regarding picture reproduction by Intel chips vs. ATI chips. In terms of sheer color reproduction in video and everyday tasks, are the differences negligible? Basically, does the ATI have any advantage over the Intel in terms of performance/quality of 1080p video playback and lower? Does the ATI chip have an advantage when it comes to outputting 1080p video to an HDTV (via HDMI)?

    Thanks

The 4500MHD is the mobile high definition version of the 4500 graphics chip, hence the MHD suffix. It decodes and plays 1080p video and audio, whether from ripped files or Blu-Ray disks, if you have a computer with a compatible Blu-Ray drive.

Color reproduction differences are negligible, since that's dependent on the display itself (and according to all I've read, the 1080p in the 1555 is one of the best), and colors can be adjusted via software, with either the ATi 4570 or Intel 4500MHD.

Basically, it comes down to 3D performance or battery life.

I just asked the dell rep if I could get the upgrade for Windows 7 because my system has been delayed by 5 days. He told me that the upgrade is for systems purchased after july 8th... conveniently the day my computer should arrive. I called his bluff. We'll see what he says.

Well, hopefully that's just a mistake on the website! I spoke to a customer service guy on Friday who said if I bought a 1555 I'd get the upgrade in the UK. Most importantly though, it is mentioned as an eligible system on:

https://win7.dell.com/Eligibility.aspx (there is no mention of eligible models differing between the specified territories - at least that I noticed.)

and if I try to do a mock registration for the upgrade as a UK resident, the Studio 1555 shows up as an option.....

Also if you go through the purchase process, "Windows upgrade offer" does appear on OS options page, whereas it doesn't for eg. the Studio 17 (which is not mentioned as eligible on the above site.)

You have the advantage of returning the system. So you could theoretically just send the computer back and then buy a new one and get the free upgrade.

I'm getting a system replaced under warranty... I'm on XP now, but I told the guy I've heard bad things about Vista and would be more comfortable with 7. Kinda like playing the "dumb" card... We'll see how it works out.... if not, I'm saving up some amazon gift cards, so i can always just buy the upgrade for $50...

Do most people think that the Windows 7 will be worth the upgrade?

    Hey,

I ordered the 1555 on 24th of June and delivery is est at 7th July.
So, for Dell's Win7 Upgrade, what counts as a purchase? The order or the delivery? Will I be eligible for the upgrade?

    Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. Will the dedicated GPU consume really that much power in non-intensive everyday tasks? I've always been under the impression that battery life really takes a hit when a dedicated GPU is coupled with graphics-intensive tasks. Assuming the difference in battery life is less than half an hour between the integrated and dedicated chips available for the 1555 in office work, I'm actually more concerned about heat than anything (especially after reading the horror stories on the other threads). Why don't more manufacturers take advantage of switchable graphics technology?

It will still draw significantly more power even when it's not doing anything particularly intense. I'm fairly certain it accounts for more than half an hour of life.

Switchable graphics are awesome, but relatively new technology. I imagine they'll become more mainstream over time.

I finally got my $100 free coupon from Dell, I bought a cool Belkin notebag but better yet I FINALLY got a travel mouse, since I ordered my 1555 with bluetooth. I got the Dell Matte Finish Bluetooth Travel Mouse. It came in the mail today...It connected perfectly and I LOVE this mouse, I can't bellieve how much fast it is using the mouse instead of the touchpad (which I really hate and can't get use to) The bluetooth is great, no wires and so far it's connecting perfectly, cool back and forward buttons on the side for webpages.

Would having integrated graphics add like an hour to battery life? (I realize there are many factors, but the reviewed model lasted 3:45... and had discrete graphics).

I think I'm about to buy a 1555, but I'm not sure I want the 4570 or not. If it kills the battery life, then I don't. (I need the 1080p screen for code writting... because it's hard going from 2560x1600 to 1440x900)

I'd say an hour is a reasonable difference, assuming the same settings are used.

Does anyone know anywhere to get parts for the Studio 1555? My replacement system will be a 1555, but it won't have the backlit keyboard, which is pretty important to me. I can't find it anywhere online.

Would the heat added by the discrete graphics card significantly reduce the life expectancy of the laptop (i.e. how long the laptop will last over time, not battery life)? Or would the discrete graphics just slow down after a while (due to its poor cooling system) and the rest of the system remain unaffected? I absolutely cannot afford for my laptop to conk out on me after three years. It needs to last through four years of college, and if high system temperature is an indicator of short life span, I'll steer clear of hot laptops. Are there any tell-tale signs of early-death laptops? Sorry for all the questions!

EDIT: As for how much battery life is lost with discrete graphics, the Lenovo U330 (with switchable graphics) review on this site may give us a good idea. According to the review, about an hour and twenty minutes (4 hours decreased to 2 hours 40 minutes) are lost with the ATI 3450, which consumes approximately the same amount of power as the 4570 according to Notebookcheck.

My 3450 does not get very hot at all. I think it's safe to say that a dedicated graphics card won't shorten your laptop's lifespan.

Shroom, I'm about to pull the trigger on the 1555 also. Pretty much the exact same configuration JayKaySLO except I plan on slapping a SSD inside of it so the HDD will be base config. Not sure about spare parts, but I can run some app on it when I get it to see who makes it maybe to help you out.

As for the heat issue, Gossling, I wouldn't worry. My Inspiron 9300 has been hot as hell since Day One. Still cant put it on my lap after more than 20 minutes of light use. Talking 110-115 degrees on the backside. Hasn't conked out on me yet. Most of the ones that fail are due to faulty motherboards that can't take the heat the system produces- see: XPS M1330. But, most are 'made' to withstand it. The Studio 1555 is said to run fairly cool anyhow.
