i got my 1555 delivered yesterday. faced two issues:
a. the usb ports on the left are too damn 'tight'. you have to force the connector in. one thumb drive went rubbery in the process. is this something to do with the build itself or particular to my machine?
b. creative add-on drivers ( i went for the upgrade). i have 64bit OS(shipped) and this stuff was not installed out-of-the-box. so i pop in the disc and install the stuff following the instructions. but the console app, control panel don't work. incompatible device stuff. now, what could be the issue. it' weekend so i cant really talk to the rep or support guys. i called up the xps support and the guy was ncie enought to tell me that this stuff doesnt work on 64bit. but then went on to give me a patch which would reportedly make it work. but that patch seemingly fails to install.
anyone else here faced the issue? if the creative stuff and the OS are really incompatible, what are my options? the dell rep must've known this all while configuring the stuff for me. whole thing was done over phone!
-

Another issue, every time I open an Office document (Word, Powerpoint, or Excel), Office configures itself. Any ideas for fixes?
 -

Yeah, office is like that. Theres nothing to be done but uninstall and reinstall, it should fix it.
 -

@Mastershroom: Ok 1080p it is. I'm actually more "worried" about windows textsize but if other people gets used to it so will i.

1555 ordered. Payed about +$26 to get 1080 over 720p display. $26 and still i had to think about it for an entire day?
They see me contemplating, they hatin'
      -

So how much did your unit cost in total?
 -

I added a P8600-processor so the price ended up at about 8700 Swedish Krona. With the krona at an all-time-low it should be about $1160 with delivery.
 -

Hmm, thats 1,275.52 CAD, just a hair more than mine was but you have a much better processor. Does that include a warrenty?
 -

So I tried uninstalling Office and the installer stopped responding, so I had to stop it mid-uninstall. Now it's saying that the computer doesn't support the language of the installation package..
Help! What do I do? Please tell me I don't need to reinstall Vista. -

Only 1 year warranty. Gonna have to expand it later i guess. (Swedish custumer rights give me 3 years but heck thats a process)
The only thing bugging me is that i had to go with a 5400rpm-HDD. The 1555 only comes with 5400RPM here in scandinavia. I can't understand why they don't have universal speccs.
Oh well at least the 5400 Dell puts in seems to be decent. -

My Canadian model also had a 5400 rpm drive, and to be honest I'm fine with that. Laptops with 7200RPM drives have shorter battery life and usually run warmer.
 -

@tipoo: My drive is 320GB, my 4570-card is 512. And 1080 display.
But i pay 33% income tax, have a crappy hockey league, live with governmental alcohol monopoly and have no national athlete like Georges St.Pierre.... So a cheaper notebook i've really deserved. -

HA that is great... You have good hockey players though.... they all come to Vancouver to play.... GSP isn't even a national athlete.... He's not really a household name... Big fight tonight I guess.... -

My other complaint: noise. Is it normal for my computer sound have a background wizzing sound all the time? It sounds like a constant whirring/creaking/clicking sound. It's not loud, but it's very annoying. It's coming from the left side...
Is this the fan? It doesn't sound like any other laptop fan I've heard...and it's going constantly... -

Yeah it should be the fan it is a little annoying on this laptop. I have noticed it comes on alot.
 -

My fan has not come on at all yet. Whirring and clicking sounds more like a hard drive needle than a fan...unless something is horribly wrong with your fan.
      -

I thought it might be the hard drive too, but should it be so noisy? It's constantly going...
 -

the hard drive is in the bottom left of the laptop just left of the touchpad. If it is highier up it will be the fan.
 -

Speaking of noises is anyone having problems with the volume on the laptop. When i raise or lower the volume on the volume control or from the keyboard shortcuts i get a glitchy sound sort of an audio stuttering.
 -

Hard to say...it sounds like it's in between!
Okay, the fan just turned on, it's definitely the hard drive. Generally a clicking hard drive is not a good sign...
      -

Might be worthwhile downloading the update for the hard drive that is there to fix the noise of the hard drive. Check the update site.
 -

I used to face the same HDD clicking problem during the initial days of purchase. These days (after a month and a half) I am not hearing it. Maybe it fixed on its own. I got a WD 320GB 5400 drive.
 -

One thing that might help is to defrag the hard drive, i did that and i dont hear the hard drive anymore.
 -

Okay, I've scoured this thread and I have not found a definitive answer to this question: how does the LG 1080 compare with the AUO 1080?
 -

For anyone bothered by clicking noise of their HD. It's quite easy to resolve. Search for 'hdparm'.

You will be able to upgrade to win7 the date applies 1 or 2 days after the service tag gets put on the system after delivery.
I found this out when I got my computer last Monday
Its not the day of order
kind regards
Puddy -

Your wrong its 2 days after the system is delivered and not the order date
You have to wait 2 days for the service tag gets registered live on dell system
puddy -

Some times the service takes up 48 hours after signing the proof delivery for your computer before it goes live on dell sytem at HQ
puddy -

No its not its the best I had a laptop that had 7 days to go before its 3 year warranty ran out and because it could not be fixed they gave me a brand new inspiron 1525.
They give next day onsite and unlike most other computer compaines dell dont void the warranty if you open the case to be extra ram in it or have a look round or fit a hard drive
puddy -

So, if I enter my service tag but change the date of purchase to the 26th, it says I'm eligible. But if I leave it at the 20th, I'm not. I don't want to lie...

Also, I defragmented, but my hard drive is still whirring/creaking rapidly (and audibly).
Now it sounds kind of like it's buzzing...I'm afraid there's something wrong with my hard drive. -

So Puddy... you got a replacement computer and you got the Windows 7 Upgrade for free? When did you order and all?
 -

what' with the audio on this laptop? jarrs and stutters like a pentium 1 used to. anybody found solution to this?
 -

I would reinstall the audio driver if i were you, I dont own the laptop yet so I'm not sure exactly but i bet its a driver thing.
 -

My 1555 has no audio stuttering. As tipoo suggests, try reinstalling drivers. What operating system are you on?
 -

windows vp 64. factory shipped.
 -

I received my Studio 1555 4 days ago and I am very happy with it. The only unfortunate part about it, was the OS that came pre-installed. Oh well, I made quick work of it and I now have a nice Linux distro installed. Everything works great with it, even the wireless.
 -

Nice...What Linux distribution are you using? I was planning on installing Ubuntu 9.04 when my laptop comes on the 31'st, along side Windows 7 when they ship the free copy in september.
 -

I bought the studio 15 with full HD screen and blu-ray, I have read about some people saying at full 1080 resolution, the writing is wayyyyy too small.
Is this true, and is there no way to decrease the resolution.
I thought if I am getting blu-ray I might as well get full HD screen but I don't want to get my laptop and find that the writing is tiny, and I have to use a magnifying glass to do anything.
Will it still be nice and sharp and full screen, etc if I decrease the reolution?
Also, if I do find everything too small and decrease the resolution, Will I have to increase the resolution to full if I want to watch a blu-ray movie at full/highest quality? -

it seems small when you first look at it, but you get used to it. if you wish you can either increase the dpi or lower the resolution.
BTW, your thinking ahead of yourself. Wait till you get the laptop and you will see...
      -

You get used to a high res screen... As EVERYONE has said... it's not too small... and you can increase the DPI of the text to make it work for you.
If you are worried about it, get the 900p if it's available.
But in all honesty. I couldnt live without a high res screen. They are so much better. You learn to love them.
If you only change the DPI of the text, you won't need to change anything. Everything will display better at native resolution, so 1080, but you could use a different setting....But you wont want to. Just get used to it. It wont be bad. -
Windows 7 is released in October, on the 22nd to be precise.
If it's too small, don't lower your resolution; increase your DPI. This will enlarge text and icons while remaining at the native 1080p resolution. -

 I went with Arch
 -

Dell is sending me a replacement computer (new, not refurbished because it was only a few days old), the order date will be July, so I should be able to get the Windows 7 upgrade, right?
I hope so! -

I'm wondering the same thing... I should get my replacement in the next couple days.... My order was placed on June 30th... I hope I do... but we'll see. If anyone knows... Let me know... Otherwise.. I'll find out and let you guys know.
 -

Why didn't you register for the windows 7 upgrade when you had the first unit? Anyways, you should still be able to.
 -

I didn't register the first unit because I purchased it 6 days too early (June 20th). The order date on this new one is 7/13, so I think I should be able to register it.
 -

Another question, I apologize if it's dumb. I am planning on doing a clean install on my replacement to repair the Office 2007 problem that causes it to configure whenever Word, Excel, etc. is opened.
What do I need? I've never done this before. Just the drivers and the operating system disk?
How do I get a web browser? Is it included on the vista disk? -

Hey thought that i would post, i have been reading the forums for a while now, as i have been looking for a new laptop to replace my 4 year old acer that has sadly passed.
So i decided on the Studio 1555 (after seriously considering a macbook pro).
I just placed my order, pretty chuffed at the price i managed to get.
Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz)
512MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4570
4GB of Ram
15.6in Widescreen Full High Definition (1920x1080) WLED with TrueLife
Vista 64 Bit
Backlit Keyboard
500GB (5.400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
Fixed Internal Blu-ray Disc (DVD+/-RW + BD-ROM)
Colour Choice - Bunch O Surfers
Basicly everything i wanted minus maybe the bluetooth and 9 cell, but i had a strict budget.
Anyway price = £769.03 or $1230 usd
I used the student discount (6%) + 10% off code + Free 500gb HD upgrade and the usual dell discount on the site.
Guess it will be good enough to play wow on
 .

Will post pics when it comes.
~xandy1990 -
You'll have to have your Office disk handy as well; it's not part of the Vista installation. And yes, Windows Vista comes with Internet Explorer.
That does look like a fantastic price for those specs. And welcome to the forums.

It won't play WoW...it will destroy WoW.
      -

Just curious - On the 1555, if you wanted the best HDD speed, power consumption, and heat generation specs (i.e. try to hit the best of all worlds) but you weren't worried about actual physical space, would you get the 250gb 7200 rpm drive or the 500gb 5400 rpm drive?
Why?
Joe -

Neither, because there's no way of knowing what brand/type hard drive you'll get. Better order the cheapest from Dell and replace it yourself.
For example: with the 500GB some people get WD5000BEVT (fast), some get Seagate 5400.6 (slow).
