The Dell QuickSet software included with your system has an on-screen indicator of Caps Lock.
Get Windows 7 64 bit. There's really no reason anyone should be running XP on a new computer these days unless you're running 20 year old programs that just won't work with Vista/7.

A few of you were asking about the chainlink pattern...it really doesn't stick out at all. If you're not focused on it, you won't notice it.

Clickers beware, these pictures are huge; well over 2000px per side.

Don't let this pic scare you; I took it with flash on just to better illustrate the contrast:

This is more like what it actually looks like under normal lighting:

And here's the chainlink on the palmrest:

Check out my other thread, I'll have lots more pictures up there.

That's very very very interesting. I ordered mine 2 days after you and ordered the exactly same thing (even the processor!). Did you order it via the canadian website btw?

EDIT: Wait, my bad; didn't read the part about canada day specials LOL. I did the same thing! Hope it comes tomorrow/Monday. Does purolator function on weekends?

Actually you just reminded me to do that. That's one of the reasons I was holding off on a new laptop for so long. I registered without an issue.

Would the 500GB make the computer anymore heavier compared to the 320GB?
    What about heat?

I dont think the difference would be noticeable. Its not a huge difference. Get a faster HD not a bigger one.

if 320 isn't big enough..... look at external ones?

honestly, I don't understand how people can fill up a 500GB harddrive. I'm using a 80GB desktop, and i have never gone past 30GB. Ironically, my studio thing comes with the 500GB, so now it pisses me off that it's heavier. =(

I don't even see an option to get a faster one on the dell website. The only option is a 250GB 7200RPM.

Speed: 320GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) with Free Fall Sensor [add $100 or $3/month1]

Those are the Options from Dell Canada. So if you were going between the 320gb and 500gb... go for the 320gb 72000 RPM instead.

Obviously options vary with your location... I know for instance the 900p screen isnt available in most places.

stabilo, i think that's for the most default edition. When I ordered mine, I didnt have an option, just 500GB 5400RPM. So I guess not all those options are available when there are discounts off.

500gb is the only option on the best spec base model, but if you choose the one down, you can choose other hard drives

Yea... Dell has funny promotions. Oh well. I'm getting the standard 250gb 5400rpm. Didn't really get a say in that. My computer that the 1555 is replacing only has a 120gb.... haha. I remember when we had 2gb hard drives, a pentium 133 and Floppy discs.... well i remember more than that... my parents even had a computer with a turbo button!

The US site does not have those options. Its the 320GB 5400RPM, 500GB 5400RPM, or the 250GB 7200RPM.

What does a faster HDD mean? quicker boot up? less heat?

I would've taken 250gb 7200rpm ANYDAY over my 500gb one. I guess it would've been more expensive or something though =(.

Faster in general. Faster saving, opening, booting, shut down, file copying etc.
I dont really know about heat. It probably generates a bit more because well... it moves faster. It also uses a bit more battery juice. But nothing too dramatic.

Did you do a clean reinstall of Vista yet? I know people have said that Dell has some bloatware on it; so that could be the problem causing it. If after the clean install, the problem persists, u should probably contact dell (cause maybe hardware is malfunctioning?)

How much performance difference is there between the 256MB vs the 512MB card? I don't really wanna spend the extra $100 if I don't have to...

Also during that 12 hour charging period when I first get it... can I use it?

Buy a decent 250GB/7200rpm drive for and an external USB/eSATA enclosure and swap the drives. Use the 500GB/5400 drive for backups and the 250GB drive in the system. Newegg has 250GB/7200's for $65 delivered in the US, not sure about elsewhere.

You don't need to charge for 12 hours the first time. Lithium ion batteries don't need to be calibrated like the old NiMH or NiCad batteries.

I would not recommend letting Dell choose your hard drives. Often they give you slow Seagate hard drives. Like the 7200rpm Seagate which isn't as fast as WD Scorpio Black.

Scorpio Blue 500GB is another good hard drive, a lot faster than Seagate 5400.6 500GB. It even rivals the Seagate 7200.4 http://techreport.com/articles.x/17010

Quicker boot, quicker application launching, faster multitasking, faster virus scans, etc.

Actually Lithium Ion batteries do need calibration once in a while... http://batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm

Personally I would trust Dell's advice as they probably know how to minimize battery returns. I would also make two deep cycles at the beginning. Not everyone agrees at the latter, but I've got very good experience with them; seeing the fully charged capacity raise.

I'll trust you on this one Phil, cause i really don't want to spend another 100 bucks in the near future on batteries LOL.

When you say two deep cycles; do you mean depleting the batteries 2 times FULLY?

    Thanks.

Yes fully. And temporarily disable the Vista setting that automatically shut down the system when it comes to 3% (or 5%). This can be done in Control Panel, Energy Settings.

Also I recommend downloading RMClock, to read your 'Fully charged capacity' before you begin. That way you can observe any effects.

Blue is not blue..... therefore it is feeling blue... and hence red?

I'm sure there could be a way to calibrate it or download drivers? I'm not really sure. I can't see how these screens can be that bad. Like I've seen many laptops, and really, unless you are really that picky or comparing side by side, only the budget computers really show a major downside. These Studio panels shouldn't be THAT bad....?

Hey guys i need your help!

I'm about to order a Dell Studio 1555. I have decided for a nice setup but a have a HUGH dilemma.

    720p or 1080p display?
I've heard so much good things about the 1080. But i think it all comes down to this:
I will play a few games on the laptop the first year. This probably will happen in 720p to get a smooth going. But how will games running in 720(or lower) resolution look on the 1080-native display? Will it be blurry as hell? Will my need to play games on lower resolutions make the 720p-display a better choice for me? Help! :)

The pixels are so small on the 1080p screen that it's not a big issue to play in lower resolution.

Dell specifically say to charge for at least 12 hours.

Granted it won't make a huge difference if you don't follow Dell's instructions, but is it really that difficult to leave a brand new machine plugged in for twelve hours?

I know it's what they say, but it's probably just to be on the safe side. I plugged my machine in for about 2 hours the first time, until it was fully charged, and unplugged it. It got about 6 and a half hours of life right off the bat.

@spett: I would go with the 1080p. Downscaling to 720p will not be very blurry.

@junctioned: Last time I checked, Columbus, OH was in North America. :p

Get the 1080p. I haven't heard anyone complain about the 900p or 1080p screens... so i doubt you would be dissapointed.

Actually the 1366*768 from AU Optronics is quite good. 230 cd/m bright and 200:1 contrast. Chances are slim of getting it though. The Samsung panel seems a lot more common.

tipoo, is this in canadian or american dollars?

If it's canadian, i would think it's decent. I bought my studio1555 (after tax) for like $1400, but I have a better processor, graphics card, battery, backlit keyboard and harddrive than you. (so it sort of evens out)
