Any opinions on portability? It's kind of between this, the studio 14z, and the macbook pro for me.

The three notebooks you listed there are very different, and it depends on your budget.

the 13 inch Macbook Pro would probably be the best for pure portability, but its also the most expensive. Next for portability would be the 14z, followed by the Studio 15. Personally i think the Studio 15 is pretty light and portable, but someone like my sister on the other hand, would find it bulky and heavy.

The choice is for school, and I've been talking about all three of them in the "Off to school" thread I started. It's a tough choice which we'll be discussing at home. I'm worried that the macbook's aluminum will dent TOO easily, the studio 14 doesn't come with a drive, and the studio 15 may be to heavy/large. But I like all three really. Is the 9-cell much to heavy / intrusive for school portability?

I'd advise against the MBP for high school. It's very expensive, in comparison to other small notebooks, which means there is more chance of it being stolen unfortunately.

I would advise against a laptop for high school.... like I dont know what kind of high school you go to... but like back in my day.. (which is only 3 years ago).... there is no way you need a laptop.... you dont take a laptop to high school... you work on a computer at home and thats it. I would say you NEED a laptop for university... but for high school.... that's ridiculous... just wait..save your money and get a good one for university.

It's for the ol' university. (People take computers to high school???) I just saw a bunch of How-to videos on cracking kensington locks; I was shocked. But my question still stands to those who have the computer :)

I got mine for university too. To make your choice easier:

Studio 15: Best bang for your buck, fully featured but the heaviest and largest of the three, worst battery life of the three
MBP (i assume you meant the 13 inch?): Fully featured, worst bang for your buck, good portability
Studio 14Z: best portability, medium bang for your buck, missing an optical drive

Obviously there is alot more going on than just what i listed, but those are the major differences.
The end decision of course, is ultimately yours.

On a side note, there were actualy alot of people in my High School that brought laptops to school, but they were always the showoff-ey kids :D

I say go with the 1555. I carry mine, with the 9 cell battery, to and from class twice a day in my backpack, and it's really no heavier than an extra textbook. Hell, my physics text probably weighs more than the 1555.

Guys, do you have 3rd speaker (subwoofer I think) on the bottom of yours studio 1555?
Behind up-right (north-east) grating - almost in the corner.

I think there is speaker, am I right?

So... looks like my sound board exploded.

I was on Skype when I hear a few pops and bangs from the sound coming out of the Dell Studio, then my video goes dead. Says I need to plug in a USB headphone. However, investigating further, I cannot listen to music on interwebs, hear game sounds, etc.

How the heck did this happen? I just bought this!

Even my monitor is Samsung 720p (SEC5441).
I dont see any color problem with mine.

I have read a lot about the "Dark blues look slightly purple" problem.. But i haven't noticed that in mine.. Does all the samsung displays have the problem ?? or just some rare cases

@krazyone - how did you notice yours at first ??

The lack of a third party fan control program problem is a vista 64-bit issue that I believe has to do with permissions and signatures and such

Anyone know if the Facial Recognition is just a software disc that comes with it that you install? Or is it embedded into the camera by the manufacturer. Because, if it's embedded, I might get it with my Dell, but if it's just a disc/software, then I'm not paying $40 for it.

    Hi
I sow when I first turn on the laptop, but I thought that is just on my mind, now I have the confirmation that I am not "crazy"

Please, if anybody can do this test:

Please go at http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/index.html?navclk=ps3&tag=nav-top;ps3 , look at the borders, on my PC is dark blue, on my laptop is purple :(
    What should I do?
How is looking on your display?

It looks pretty blue to me, but if you think it's purple, then that means your red channel is too pronounced, or blue is too subdued. Either way, you can adjust this in the ATi Catalyst Control Center, in the Color category, if you have the ATi 4570 card, or in the Intel graphics settings if you have the 4500MHD. Increase the gamma, brightness or contrast of blue, or reduce that of red.

    use i8kfangui

it doesn't neccessarily allow fan control, but you can tell it to turn off, to spin slow or spin fast. there's an option labeled automatic fan control, but that'll slow your system to a halt. this is all with vista 32bit btw.

You can only use the driver that Dell provides. Mobility Modder does not work with the ATi 4 series cards.
They're the same, really. They're both 500GB 5,400 RPM drives from good, reliable manufacturers. I had the Western Digital Caviar Blue in 320GB on my old Studio 1535, and my new 1555 has the Seagate Momentus 5400.4 320GB. I notice no difference.

Anyone out there w/ a studio 1555 that has a Intel 4500HD & 9 cell battery. Just want to know how much battery life one gets w/ those specs. Also how cool does your system run?

Dell says my Studio 1555 will ship tomorrow. So excited. Just hope their arent any problems w/ it since i've already had to wait a week after my whole fedex disaster.
