Hey guys, I've come apon something that maybe one of you can answer, about a week ago i was trying out my hdmi connection on my hd tv by watching a movie i rented, I noticed that there was a flickering not very pronounced breakup about two thirds up the screen, I pulled out the dvd and it looked scratched and a little smudged so i cleaned it and put it in my regular dvd player, seemed to play just fine, so i put mission impossible 3 in my computer the next day and it played it perfectly.

Today I downloaded Crysis and although i play Halo PC on all high settings with no distortion, even on the lowest settings and resolution during the movie before you start the first mission i get the same sort of distortion, mainly about two thirds of the way up but sometimes lower, is this because the LED screen cant keep up with the acceleration or something i should be calling Dell about? Im going to try it on my 60 inch 1080p tomorrow but i was just wondering if this is common and something i shouldnt be worried about or something i should be getting fixed? Thanks in advance, you guys are the best.

Can anyone tell if this color problem (purple instead of dark blue) is known by dell service?
I want to write an email to Dell Romania, and if I can quote some user who already had this problem then it will be better
    Thank you

The time on my Studio 1555 keep sgetting reset back 3 minutes. I changed it in Vista and it goes back, I change it in the BIOS, it'll go back. It's really annoying because when i sync my phone, it'll change the time on my phone too which i use to follow up with at work.

Have you tried disabling the Internet Time sync?

In Vista it's under Control Panel > Date and Time > Internet Time tab.

Yeah but that should be the right time anyway so it doesn't make sense. Unless all the clocks that tracerit is comparing the time with are wrong?

I still havnt found a solution to the Dell Dock constant CPU useage problem, has anyone else had any luck? Its not slowing down my system - not that i can notice, anyways, but it cant be good for battery life to have something using 15% of your CPU clock cycles all the time for no reason.

Dell Dock doesn't use that much CPU for me. And it's only draining your battery if it has to speed up, and thus overvolt.

Yesterday i was watching a clip with media player classic and the laptop screen suddenly turned black, while the sound kept playing for a bit, afterwards that also stopped (might be me stopping the sounds since i went to hit some buttons and "spacebar = pause") couldn't get the screen to turn on so i had to reset it with the power button.

Am i describing a known problem here?

Just wondering what it is already got a replacement on the way from dell

Hi first post and a real newbie one i'm afraid.

Am about to receive my 1555 and am struggling to decide what OS to install, stick with Vista or put Windows 7 on? Do you guys find that drivers (especially for the the 4570) are "solid" and fully working with Windows 7 RC1? Furthermore do Dell's own programs such as QuickSet work correctly with Windows 7?

In short, are ther currently any issues with installing Windows 7 RC1?

    Many thanks!

I can't say for the Studio, but I have the Inspiron which also has one of the "newer" ATI 4000 series GPUs and Windows 7 picked it up straight away. If anything, it didn't like me trying to install catalyst control centre, so I removed that and have emailed AMD / ATI to get them to include the lower end 4000 series GPUs in their recently released windows 7 driver pack.

Quickset seems to work just fine, and I'm still using build 7100 something, so I'm sure they'll be fine in whatever build you get.

For what it's worth though, I'd probably stick with Vista for the time being. Otherwise, when the full edition of Windows 7 comes out, you'll have to do a full re-install; whereas if you still have Vista installed you can do an inplace upgrade. I didn't opt for this because I really wanted to test Windows 7; so have been using it as a full time OS. Plus I cloned my HDD onto a spare 320GB 2.5" HDD before doing the installation, so if things really went pear shaped I could always simply take out one HDD and insert other :)

Quick question guys. I heard the 256MB ATI Radeon HD 4570 with the Studio 15 is DDR2 but the 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4570 is DDR3. Is this true?

I don't think so. I just checked the setup guide for the Studio 1555 here and it says on page 54 the following:

This was for the UK site; but I can't imagine it being different for the US site. Might be worth checking it yourself or asking a Dell rep just to make sure.

Thanks. And just so I am clear, when it comes to graphics cards DDR3 means pretty much the same thing as GDDR3, right?

Near enough. It's not the same as DDR3, but it's not the same as DDR2 either. It's more like DDR3 that has been specifically optimised for graphics usage, so for example power usage & heat output have been reduced.

So if one graphics card says it comes with GDDR3 and the same GPU on another machine says DDR3, is there any difference?

Not really no. In any case, it probably is GDDR3 rather than DDR3. The G just stands for graphics, and I've seen many places where it is left out but I know the machine has GDDRx. I'm not even sure if it is possible to use DDR anything with a GPU, as I think they all need GDDR.

That was what I was trying to ask. If some places just leave it out because all GPU memory today is GDDRx.

How are the hinges on everyone's Studio 1555s? Even though the screen stays put pretty well on mine, it does oscillate back and forth a tiny bit whenever i accidentally kick my crappy desk. Is this normal?

Hey I have the same issue with the dark blue looking purple. But my screen is the 900P AUO10EE, not the Samsung. I'm thinking it has more to do with the type of LED used in the backlight. My mini 10v has perfect dark blue and it is also LED backlighting. If you have the ATI card, you can adjust the color to get it better but it is still not perfect. Here are my settings to make it a little better:

    Avivo Color
    [IMG]

    Red Gamma
    [IMG]

    Green Gamma
    [IMG]

    Blue Gamma
    [IMG]

And here is a test image that looks purple on my 1555 but not my Mini 10v.

My hinges are very sturdy. If I hold the laptop by the lid and let the body of the laptop hang, it won't fall open. You may want to try tightening your hinge screws.

with default catalyst settings, image looks dark blue on my samsung 720p

    like close to (approximately)
    "Hue = 160,Sat = 180,Lum=65"
    "Red = 17,Green=17,Blue=121"

After using my ATI settings above for a little while, I notice everything is kind of too green now, so I do not think those settings are really any better than dark blue being plum purple.

I would like for others to click the image below and report back what color it looks like on your 1555. It should be a nice subdued (slight gray) dark blue like Midnight Blue and not a dark Plum Purple. Also report what brand and resolution your monitor is.

Already folks so good so far. Surprised how much the 9 cell battery elevates the computer. The trackpad is going to take some time to get used too. Its slick which is different from my inspiron 9200. Keyboard is pretty nice. Typing w/ it right now.

Just installed firefox and Xmarks (syncs all your bookmarks in seconds). Will be doing some more checking like the DVD drive. Will probably hold off on doing a clean install until tomorrow.

Oh and I got a Vista sticker and intel centrino wide sticker. Surprised that the palmrest has that chainlink design on it. When i went to best it was solid silver.

My display setting is at 1600X900.

    Go into the start menu
Type in the "run" search box, "dxdiag"
A little window will open with info on your laptop
    Click on the "Display" tab.

At least, that's how it works on my desktop.

Weird, I ordered mine on the 28, got the confirmation online, but no email. Order is suppose to be here today with next day shipping, Alaska. But, I called Dell and they have no record of my order. They say that I need to make a new order. I am a little annoyed because this was from the outlet store and I got an awesome deal, now I have to find a new one.

Has this happened to anyone else?
