$45 for a 1080 upgrade? In the UK Dell want £100 or $167.25

...there's absolutely no justification for such price disparity other than profiteering.

well they also need to take into account the various sales taxes within each country, and although the part may only cost Dell £27; they also need to make some money out of it. After you've taken costs of marketing, fulfillment, refunds etc, I bet they probably only have a 10-15% margin.

But it isn't costing Dell £27 - Americans pay $45 for this upgrade, which is £26.90 (£27). The panel will likely cost Dell considerably less than this if they are to make any money from it. Unles the rest of the world are subsidising Americas lower prices.

The prices I wrote were based on the approx conversion of INR to USD...I am not sure whether americans pay 45$ for this upgrade?

I just bought a 1600x900 display from Dell at cost price (because they had to replace the display anyway, so offered me the upgrade at cost price when I asked) and I can tell you with absolute certainty that it costs dell £23. After VAT the number is closer to £27.

I was about to write that until the forum bummed on me.

I'm just about to pay 100quid for the upgrade on mine, saw that post, and my jaw dropped. What the hell Dell? You can't justify a 300% markup for the English market.

The optical drive in my computer has started making the sound it makes when it loads a disk every time I press the power button and frequently when reading/writing as disk. If it happens while a disk is in the drive it sounds like the rotation of the disk slows down, then the drive makes that sound as if it is shifting the disk and then it continues periodically.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening (the computer is only a few weeks old)? It didn't originally do this, so I know it shouldn't be doing this...

if it's making clicking noises, you likely have a defective disk drive. Call dell, tell them about this. they'll likely run you through a couple of tests, and if those don't work, they'll send you a replacement drive.

I did a quick google of your card, and i found this:

I have the 1080P screen, and I just noticed last night (when I changed the background image to a very dark one) how absolutely TERRIBLE HORRIBLE the vertical off-angle viewing is. The horizontal off-angle viewing isn't too bad, but the VERTICAL is a deal breaker: I adjust the angle of the screen depending on ambient light and if when I do so the colours go to crap, then forget it!

Is it a universal issue with the 1555 / 1080p screen that the off angle viewing is bad? Or is this the LG vs Samsung screen issue? I know you can't trust to get the 'good' screen, you have to take what they give you, but I'm not gambler.

Also, are there particular lines of Dell computers where they use cheaper / old technology screens, rather than better / new tech screens that DON'T have this problem (my XPS M1730 has the most beautiful screen I've ever seen on a portable, and my XPS Gen2 is a close second).

I only paid $1288 CDN for the machine (same build I have seen normally in the $1600-$1800 range) so I guess you get what you pay for, but the keyboard and the screen are the primary ways I interact with the machine, so NO COMPROMISES are allowed there... and vertical off-angle colour problems are SOOOOO 2002!

Hey Lorax...I have the 720p samsung screen, and the viewing angles on this one are pretty bad too. The general consensus here seems to be that the LG screen is superior, yet the LG screen seems to have the same issue you discribed, poor vertical viewing angles but decent horizontal ones. Is the Samsung screen realy that much worse?

Also, did anyone contact dell about the flickering screen issue yet?

will this charger work with the 1555? it's a Dell PA-10. specs are:

    90W, input = 100-240V & output = 19.5V DC, 4.62A

Yes, it works perfectly. I have an extra PA-10 at work. I leave the power supply that came with my 1555 at home and use the PA-10 at work. It is very convenient not having to pack up the power supply every morning to take the laptop in to work.

The PA-12 which is 65W will also work but the 1555 BIOS will scream at you saying that the laptop is throttling back because of only using the 65W power supply and that you should be using a 90W. So I would not suggest using the PA-12. But the PA-10 works without any issues.

    Hi Guys,

I have a few question about undervolting. I'm about to try undervolting using this guide: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824

    - When I use RMClock, it shows Unknown Core in CPU info even after i checked mobile under CPU selection (advance CPU settings). I'm using the latest version 2.35 (downloaded from the link in the guide) and my processor is T6500. Any one have any idea?

    - When I played GRID demo, I notice my GPU temperature shoot up to 93c Max as reported by HWMonitor. My question is, does undervolting help decrease the GPU temperature as well? Or a notebook cooler helps?

    Thanks.

EDIT: Oh yeah, one more question. Do I need to keep RightMark CPU program running all the time after I undervolt? Does the CPU saves all the voltage information internally or do I have to run the program to tell it which voltage to run at?

    Many thanks.

RMClock has to be opened to have the voltage settings in effect.

RMClock hasn't been developed for years, so the programmers haven't updated with the new Penryn cores - that's why it doesn't recognise it. It still works fine though, so don't worry that it doesn't tell you exactly what your CPU is.

hey..i have some concerns over my 9 cell battery...like when charging it, it goes to around 98% and remains there though it says 'charging' and the white Charging Led is on...while other times it goes it 98% and says 'not charging' with the Led off....
and plus its not giving me as much battery life as i expected it to...its like giving 4:15 mins on movie playback(not HQ just good quality)...are these things normal?

I've had my 1555 for about 2 weeks and just noticed a 1 cm mark on the screen (not dead pixels, it's a mark on the glass). No idea how it happened as I treat this thing like gold dust. I have the Dell 3 year support thing but no accidental damage cover. I guess I could live with it but it will bug me a lot.

Can I get Dell to replace the screen? Any ideas how much it will cost? It's the 1080 type.

That might not be so okay - my work laptop is ~4 years old and it has a habit of doing that - sometimes even if it's not fully charged it'll stop charging. Mine can be attributed to age and battery health (which is really low on this thing) but for you it's not age, and it's probably not battery health either, judging by how long your battery lasts.

Thanks for the note: I can't really tell which screen I have... under "Monitor" in the Device Manager, I see "AUO10ED"... that's the LG, right?

I did a side by side comparison to my M1730 screen... and the screen on my 1555 isn't that much worse... it really only manifest itself when I applied a black background image (for screen recording) so I think in practical use, it won't be a problem.

    Thanks for the reply

Did you install as an admin? Sometimes that happens, though i don't think that should be an issue.

And yes, the vista version of CCC should work on win7.

CCC does install on Windows 7, but it's a bit clunky. You could get the latest drivers from AMD (version 9.7) and run the new mobility modder. I know that sounds weird, because the mobility drivers should already be in the latest one from AMD, but they are not for the GPU for the Studio 15. Mobility modder though now works for them.
