I don't think it will work, Dell aren't completely dumb, they've probably locked it somehow.
If you decide to download it and manage to install it, please do not discuss it here, as technically it's fraud and should not be discussed on these boards.

No one seemed to care when it was the FastAcess software though, just sayin -
Mine shipped today so it will be here some time next week. Yay!

Whats this about clicky hard drives? Mine clicks rather loudly upon shutdown, but thats the only time. I have the 250gb Western Digital drive.

Stupid or not, we can't discuss downloading paid software without paying for it. If you had the software originally then you can try looking in this thread for how to obtain it again.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=352993
Some of the software is actually on the normal Dell support site, but it shouldn't work unless your machine was bought with the software in the first place. -
The normal lid is better than the edge-to-edge lid. No more double reflection and no more oil on the screen from the keyboard. I also think the normal lid looks esthetically better on the 1555. -

any suggestions for reducing the amount of heat on the trackpad? Seems very hot.
-
get a mouse? haha.... it's warm... but i wouldn't say hot.... overall it's a pretty comfortable comptuer to use... especially the keyboard... so nice and tactile.
-
I have mine set to moderate power saving on A/C power and max power saving on battery. -
-
When possible I have my laptop hooked up through wired and I turn off the wireless card.
Otherwise, do what tipoo said. -
I read somewhere in this thread that you could set the headphone/microphone jacks to output 5.1 audio (Front L/R, Rear L/R, and Center/Sub). Can anyone confirm if this is true?
It might be thru CCC?
Thanks -

That'll open a window for you which will show your power plans. Click 'Change Plan Settings' under the selected power plan (the one that is "checked").
That'll take you to Edit Plan Setings window, from there you click 'Change Advanced Power settings'. This then opens another window which will have a list of hardware categories. Click the + next to Wireless Adapter Settings and then the + next to 'Power Saving Mode' and from there you can select a drop down menu for Plugged and On Battery settings. -
Hey guys what's the battery life on this thing like if I were to get a 9 cell battery and did normal things like surf the web, word processing and powerpoint presentations?
Also, I have a 5.1 Logitech surround sound system at home, here is a link to it
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/home_pc_speakers/devices/234&cl=gb,en
Would I be able to plug it in to the sound ports on this laptop and use full 5.1 surround sound, if not, tell me a little bit about the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi MB offered with the system. -
For anyone else with the screen flicker problem, what kind of display do you have?
To check what display you have, right click on Computer in the start menu and go to properties. Click on device manager in the left plane. Then just go to Monitors, right click on the generic PNP monitor, go to properties, and under the Details tab go to Hardware ID's.
I think its the LGD7001 that is the display at issue. -

Thanks Shroom. There's a fella on the previous page asking something similar, I'm sure he'd be happy to hear this too. (DeathWinger)

As powerful as my current laptop is, it does not suit my needs anymore. Which is a long battery life with some graphical power and portability. -

Hey guys...If you put your ear right next to the keyboard, on the left hand side, do you hear a constant beeping? Its very faint, but definitely there. I think its the hard drive, as its there even when the fan isnt moving. Then again there are some Intel chips that make high pitched noise with or without a fan, it might be that.

Guys, what is the best way to use laptop in order to not destroy battery?
I usually use my studio 1555 connected to external power, but at least once a week I try to use baterry (100% -> ~0% ) then charge it back to 100%.
What is your opinion about this? -
New batteries do not benefit from power cycling as it used to be. In fact, new Lithium Ion batteries base how "aged" they are on the number of cycles it's seen. So, keeping it plugged in actually increases the life of the battery vs. using the battery's power and "cycling" the battery. Generally speaking, at around 300 cycles, you will see 80% of the battery's initial capacity.
P.S. a "cycle" is any time the battery has fallen below 50% charge. It is not as harmful to the battery's life to use, say, 20% of it, then plug it back in, as it is to drain it completely.

-
If you discharge your battery completely, it will be irreversibly damaged.
-
I guess it wasn't a full discharge, but it was around 5% and the laptop had shut down, but the screen came up saying I should shut down. -
Taken from Wikipedia:
* Lithium-ion batteries should be charged early and often. However, if they are not used for a long time, they should be brought to a charge level of around 40%–60%
* Lithium-ion batteries should not be frequently discharged fully and recharged ("deep-cycled"), but this may be necessary after about every 30th recharge to recalibrate any electronic charge monitor (e.g. a battery meter). This allows the monitoring electronics to more accurately estimate battery charge.[26] This has nothing to do with the memory effect.
* Li-ion batteries should never be depleted to below their minimum voltage, 2.4 V to 3.0 V per cell.
* Li-ion batteries should be kept cool. Ideally they are stored in a refrigerator. Aging will take its toll much faster at high temperatures. The high temperatures found in cars cause lithium-ion batteries to degrade rapidly.
* Li-ion batteries should not be frozen [49] (most lithium-ion battery electrolytes freeze at approximately −40 °C; however, this is much colder than the lowest temperature reached by household freezers).
* Li-ion batteries should be bought only when needed, because the aging process begins as soon as the battery is manufactured.[26]
* When using a notebook computer running from fixed line power over extended periods, consider removing the battery[50] and storing it in a cool place so that it is not affected by the heat produced by the computer. -
-
85% of the time i will be connected to power line..
So once the battery is fully charged i remove it and keep aside and use it whenever required..
I had read that doing so will increase life of the battery..
is that correct ? -
I told my sister to do that on her D810... it's 4 years old now and still lasts about 3 hours on the 9 cell battery... not bad.... so do as you want... but i dont think that method hurts. -
It will increase the life of the battery if it is stored correctly. The heat generaterd by your laptop decreases the life of your battery, but removing it from the notebook will not improve it's life by much. I'd suggest leaving it plugged in, as this helps in case there is a power outage, you accidentally pull the power cord out, or anything like this.
For a great wealth of information on batteries, you should look at the battery university:

nice site about the batteries.. it does say to Consider removing the battery from a laptop when running on fixed power. -
Yes consider it, but also consider what may happen if the power goes out etc as I mentioned before. To me, it's not worth the aggravation. If I get two years of use out of a battery, then great. I can buy a new one if I need to, but I don't typically keep a laptop for more than a year and a half anyway.
-
That's too much work to take care of a battery. Why aren't batteries being made to cater for the general public? aka those who are gonna leave it plugged in all the time and then when they need battery pull it out?
All those instructions are too darn confusing and I got a good 4 years out of my toshiba battery before it stopped working and I only found out it stopped working after not using the system for a long time. So my theory is leave the battery in and then it'll work better for longer. -
It's not as if the battery will just die on you all of a sudden. Sometimes they do, but most of the time what you will notice is a gradual reduction in the amount of charge they hold. 4 Years is a good run for a battery, I too have batteries that have lasted that long.
Your theory about leaving the battery in and it'll work better is wrong though. You see, Lithium based batteries really don't like the heat, so the idea of removing it away from your hot laptop when you are using AC power will improve the batteries lifetime; as long as the battery is stored somewhere cool when not in use.
Personally, I can't be bothered with that because of reasons I have mentioned before. -
If you have about 5 more years of patience, the STAIR ( read more here) could be the solution for the short-aged lithium batteries!
In short, STAIR is a battery using mostly (free) air and (cheap) carbon. It holds ten times longer than regular lithium-ion batteries and should be cheaper!
Well anyway, I do hope this will be the big change. A bit like LEDs are taking over the world by now -
I think it'll be a looong time before that tech makes its way into anything WE can afford! -

My Studio 15 from the Dell Outlet shipped today! Now it is just a matter of time. Anyone have any experience with how long shipping takes at the Dell Outlet? It says 3-5 business days but the "Estimated Delivery Date" says the 21st.
-
Depends on where you're located primarily. Out of curiousity, when did you order it?
If it says it shipped today you can realistically expect to see it on Friday. You may get surprised on Thursday or have your blood pressure up waiting until Saturday, though. -

abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
I ordered it on Saturday, so I was not expecting it to ship until today. I live in Jacksonville, Florida.
-
Mine went to Delivery Preperation today! Whatever that means.. It was ordered the 5th and my EDD is a week from today. Seems on schedule..
Edit: Shipped at 3 o'clock this afternoon. -
I sold my Dell 1555 after one month, worst laptop ever, never buy a Dell in the future ,ever...period, What bother me that much?
1. Display....worst view angles , crappy color representation
2. Keyboard , not even on budget laptops there is no flex like in this laptop
3. Power plug it was on right side so I cannot use mouse very well
4. Case, I was expect better materials from a 1000$ laptop
5. No led indicators??? ,even 100$ netbook has hdd activity led
Next I want to buy Gateway® P-7809u FX Edition
