I'm going to be lazy(plus i can't find the email that lists them)

    http://ireland.dell.com/ie/en/home/...aspx?refid=laptop-studio-1555&s=dhs&cs=iedhs1

If you look at the machine for €549 that's my spec with a backlit keyboard,I was on a pretty tight budget and wanted something better than my netbook specs :p

I plan to upgrade it as i go along,Even though I don't really need a good machine,I'd rather have something that will still be pretty good spec in a few years time :p

Here are the pics of the pattern:

    Palmrest
    Cover

The cover is really hard to get properly. Without the camera flash, all I got was a reflection of everything in front of the laptop; with the flash, the pattern is glaringly obvious. My camera probably won't be able to get the proper thing, but I can tell you, even though it is a fingerprint magnet, it does look nice. :)

Just thought I'd mention that I've had the laptop running for about 5 hours now, and I can't notice the difference in brightness any more.

I would personally just completely wipe the hard drive and install Vista from scratch with the provided disk. It's as clean as an installation can get. Then, just get your drivers from support.dell.com.

How does the Dell 15 handle heat? Is the graphics card on it upgradeable?

The heat is very well managed. The graphics card is not upgradeable. You'd have to swap your whole motherboard to change the graphics card, and even then your only options are the Intel 4500MHD, and the ATi Mobility Radeon HD 4570 256MB or 512MB.

Download the drivers from ATi for the desktop version of the card. Extract them but don't install. Then, download Mobility Modder and mod the drivers, then continue the installation as usual.

You just need the 9.9 version drivers, it doesn't really matter the route you take to get there. Radeon->4550 Series or Mobility Radeon 4000 Series... you'll get the same drivers either way.

As for the catalyst suite, it isn't necessary but I find it gives a decent UI to lots of settings that you'd have to search for otherwise.

God damn it my 1555 has that scratching noise under the top left part as well, should be where the graphic card is.

It is like some part inside is not fitted very tightly so that it produce some high frequency shaking noise.

It doesn't always have that noise, but when it happens I have to no way stop it(unless I turn it over or pick it up and manually put pressure on that part but this is not a solution at all) and it is really annoying, I have tried to open the case but I can only open the part with harddisk and RAM, not the entire case.

Any idea what can I do?

Hey Mastershroom, I did just what you said, and my installation was going just fine until a couple seconds before it finished, and I had error which is quite critical for me as I stream movies via hdmi to my tv.

It says the HDMI Audio Driver failed to install.

Any clue on how to fix it?

    Thanks

Where are your Studio 1555 notebooks made? I think it is written under the notebook. Mine says “Made in China”. Are they all from there?

The vast majority of Dell notebooks are either made in Xiamen, China or Penang, Malaysia. I believe it is based on where the notebook is going to end up as to which factory it is made in, as opposed to different models being made in different factories.

Do you mean using the hardware button or using a single click on the mousepad surface??

The sensibility of the mousepad can be adjusted in the settings.

The hardware button,It seems it need to be pressed down quite far to actually get it to work,It doesn't really bother me but if I'm kind of leaning my thumb on it and pressing the button it sometimes won't register that I've clicked.

The hardware buttons of the mousepad are real buttons...they need a push and not just a click, i don't know if i can explain what i mean...

However i don't feel any difference between the behaviour of the left button and the right one...

Yep, it's for the WPAN slot. Use the blue antenna cable. And no, installation of that card will not affect your warranty unless you somehow manage to gut your motherboard on a screwdriver.
No, something sounds wrong. The buttons and touchpad are part of the palmrest. Get Dell to send you a new one if you think you can install it yourself.

Hi, Can anyone help. I have the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570. When I go to
    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
I enter that I have Window XP Professional then click Mobility Radeon but I don't see HD 4570 all I see is HD 4550 series. Is that what I click to get the lastest drivers 9.9?

Also it's asking me if I want to download folding@home with this driver 9.9, do I need to check that or uncheck it?

Hi guys! Been using my 1555 for a while and have been loving it. However, lately it's been making this strange loud CLICK/TAP noise every few minutes or so. Its just one click and the sound seems to come from the beneath the upper left side of the keyboard. As I'm not well-versed in taking laptops apart, I was wanting to ask you folks what you think might be making the noise based on the location of the noise, or if any of you have experienced this issue. Is it something I should be worried about? Thank you!!

Yes, i've used the hd 4550 series to upgrade the catalyst for the 4570.
I can tell you step by step what i've done:

    -Downloaded and installed Mobility Modder.
-From the page you linked i selected my OS-Radeon-HD 4550 series.
-From the page that wil open i downloaded the firt link, the "Full ATI Catalyst™ Suite (Recommended)".
-I started the installation of this Suite, as first step it unzip the whole package...when the unzip is completed it will ask you to start with the installation...don't click on yes, leave it opened but without doing nothing.
-I opened mobility modder and i selected the folder where the drivers are unzipped and i clicked to mod them.
-When mobility modder tells you that the Modding is ended you can continue with the installation.

ps:you have to delete the UAC to use mobility modder...
ps2:during the process i deselected the "folding@home" installation, also if i don't know what it is...

That's always a pain. If your laptop is brand new, it usually takes about a week for the service tag to be in their system. Call the support line and see what they can do for you.

Cheers for that,I'm staring in University this week and tech support is open Monday to Friday 8am - 8pm ,How would I let them know I'd be happy to replace the part myself?Do I just tell them I'd be happy to,Or would I have to be awkward and say I'd rather not send it back, etc? It's still usable but a tad annoying :p

Anyway,That issue aside I have to say I really like this machine and it's seem very adequate for my needs and infact has worked well with everything I've thrown at it,At the moment,I'm running outlook 2007,Mozila Firefox 3.5,Windows live messenger 2009,Adobe photoshop CS4,Seesmic Twitter Client in the background along with AVG and Divx and also running Windows Media player playing a 700mb Divx movie and VLC media player playing a 720p 1.4gb .mkv file,Physical memory is at 70% and processor ranging between 40%-50% so running it all very well.

    Very pleased with the machine!

I Just received my backlit keyboard upgrade.. I havent installed it yet but how hard is it?
I also recieved my 4gb of ram too for a grand total of 8gb... I thought removing the plastic covering for the ram was pretty hard, like I thought I was gonna break it. wasn't as user accessible as I thought it would be.

And lol my 6gb of ram and my 8gb both give me a 5.1 in windows experience index.. lol what the heck? i was expecting at least a small change... I dont really care about experience index i just have no clue why its not changing..

I'm about to get rid of mccaffee even tho I got a free 15th subscription and just use Microsoft Security Essentials beta.. its never steared me wrong yet.

    its not, its charity
you are donating to them processing power basically
it uses your gpu to render the different fold possibilities
    (see also SETI@HOME)

think of it as ATI supporting a charitable cause
its not necessary but its like how you can have dell 'plant a tree' when you buy your laptop and stuff

Even i get clicks ... but not that many. Thats during normal operation. Mine is a 5400 rpm hard disk so i am sure it should be hard disk. 7200 rpm can click, but its not going to be a problem. But it used to be more when the laptop was new .. like about 2-3 times a day. Now its possibly either 1 or maybe zero some days.

    Looks like my laptop healed.

Mine too had the same problem. It is not a hardware issue. I downloaded synaptic touchpad driver from synaptic website, and the left click now works predictibly... so dont worry. I certainly had problem with the drivers that came with the system and also the "dell touchpad" driver. Now i just have synaptic driver from website. Though i hate the fact that sometimes scroll doesnt work .. but then it starts working again .. But left click problem will surely be solved with that. I was struggling initially.. i couldnt hold and drag anything, it always used to get dropped prematurely... so dont worry its not a touchpad problem.

i had to press the left button very hard to make sure i dont release it .. now with just synaptic driver it works GREAT !!! So certainly try it out. Remove and uninstall, synaptic and dell touchpad drivers from device manager, also put a check on remove the driver from machine. Then from uninstall software - uninstall synaptic and dell touchpad. Restart the system. Then look for synaptic drivers from synaptic.com thats it .. install and use it.

Lol. It will utilize unused processor cycles (for the benefit of mankind). Not recommended generally, as the processor will unnecessarily heat up. BTW it is not spyware :p

My clicks happen quite often. Several times an hour. It sounds kind of like somethings turning over and catching, if that makes any sense. It's a very loud, distinct click/knock sound that is different from the faint clicking of the cpu or any sounds the disc drive might make. I just don't know if I should be concerned.
