I finally got my Studio 1555
:
P8600
Full HD (1080p)
4GB RAM
HD 4570 512MB
500GB 5400rpm HDD
Dell Wireless 1510 (Draft N)
9-Cell battery
I am still testing it, but It's really great
The display is beautiful. I've got the AUO one. The pictures I tested looked much clearer than on my old monitor. Also I am really happy with the resolution. I first tested it with Ubuntu and it wasn't small at all. It feels very nice, just the appropriate size. I would say that maybe it is on the border between small and normal. Under Windows it is a little bit small though, it seems like Windows uses smaller interface fonts, but still the letters are sharp and can be read with not much effort. The resolution is really great for working.
The only problem is that I have a white pixel on the screen.
I tested the battery with 720p movie playback on 100% brightness and it lasted 3 hours and 20 minutes. I was expecting to be around 4 hours, but then again it was a HD movie so maybe this is normal. How much time do you get with the 9-cell battery?
The keyboard is very comfortable, I feel no flex at all.
The Windows Experience under Vista 32-bit is 5.0:
Processor: 5.3
Memory: 5.9
Graphics: 5.0
Gaming graphics: 5.3
Primary hard disk: 5.7
I will continue testing it. I am really happy with this laptop.
I just notice that now we have official Windows 7 64-bit drivers on the Dell support siteso I may test Windows 7 these days.
-
Strange, my service tag is still not being recognised. It's been over 2 weeks since I placed the order and I haven't been able to register for the Windows 7 Upgrade.
I tried going on the online live support and entering my service tag there in order to try and get support and I got the following message:
"Our records indicate that your service tag belongs to a system that was purchased outside of the United Kingdom and Ireland."
I'm going to send them an e-mail to try and resolve this. Has anyone else had this problem? -

-
I finally just gave Dell customer service a call. There was obviously some sort of mix-up, but they said they would sort it out and within a couple of days it was all working properly. -

Its worth the wait I can now type without the bed side light on it has 3 settings high beam low beam and off the on off switch is on the F6 key

hey people i need ur help with a minor issue. I recently got my new customized dell studio 1555 . I have removed vista and have installed win 7 on it which is working great. (got win 7 via my MSDNAA account
)
The only prob i have is that it doesnt have the ati radeon graphics sticker (it has the other 2 stickers intel and vista). So i just wanted to ask if this is normal. The laptop has the Ati card and its working fine and i dont care much about the sticker thing but if the laptop is supposed to have it then i might contact dell when i have the time. -
Neither my old Studio 1535 (with ATi 3450) nor this 1555 (with 4570) came with an ATi sticker.
If it bugs you that much, buy one off eBay, they're like 99 cents with free shipping. -
-
I have a question for other Studio 1555 owners that I'm just curious to know the answer to. I just checked my System Information and under the RAM category it states;
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 4.00GB
Total Physical Memory 3.99GB
Available Physical Memory 2.61GB
I'm just wondering if it's only saying 2.61GB memory available due to the other 1.39GB being used by Vista and other open programs.
Thanks. -

hey guys
is it the new dell studio 1555 will no more ATI hd4570 with GDDR3??
is it gonna to be replaced by cheaper DDR2? -
As far as I know, the Studio 15 will continue to have the option of having the dedicated Ati HD4570, and the VRAM will be (and is at the moment) GDDR3. -
Still waiting for mine
It all seemed to be going so well and now,It's been shipping since last Tuesday!

http://www.amazon.com/Axiom-AX-Memo...LL200UCI2&s=electronics&qid=1252978575&sr=1-6
as the pricks at partstore.com say they had it in stock yet when I ordered it and wait 6 days with no word i had to call them and then they told me they stopped carrying it -
Guys...can anyone help me in finding the right driver for the touchpad?
I mean the Synaptics driver, not the one on the dell site...
I'm searching that because i want the 2 finger scroll function, but without having other app running like "TwoFingerScroll". -
doesnt this touchpad recognize circular scrolling, i installed the latest synaptics drivers and this feature isnt seen in settings
-
-
thanks redownloaded now appeared
-
I also got the settings to have the circular scroll, but i cannot get it working...
-
same infact. ^
-
You sure you're doing it right? You have to start off with an edge scroll, just like normal, and then move your finger into a circular motion, like an iPod scroll wheel.
If I were you I would just use the actual Synaptics drivers, which allow multitouch stuff like two-finger scrolling, tap zones, and momentum. The link to download it is in this thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=407994
I know it's in the XPS forum, but it works perfectly on the Studio 1555 with its Synaptics trackpad. I love the Momentum feature; it emulates a trackball when you fling your finger on the pad and let go. -
im thinking of install ubuntu 9.04
is it safe for dual boot it and vista?
i just found that newest ubuntu has wifi & gpu driver problem in studio 1555 -
Since this laptop doesn't have a number pad, how do I enter alt codes? I tried holding Fn + Alt and typing the code but it doesn't work.
-
-
alright lads, recieved my laptop last week and had nothing but problems...
thats only where it starts though.
was on the phone to dell for FOUR HOURS yesterday trying to get them to replace it, they wouldnt let me. Ended up geting the manager in the UK to give me a full refund and im sending the laptop back on thursday.
now i got to go through the whole process of it again, to order a new laptop.
not impressed. -
-
Three finger flick in IE is brilliant and the tap zones are also very useful! -
saying the harddrive wasnt attatched or something.
phoned dell 4 times over the space of a week for them to do the whole thing over and over again of reinstalling windows vista then all the drivers... each time it would work until i turned the laptop off and it would go back to the same old blue screen -
-
man people still use IE? I am using google Chrome is for me is nothing short of amazing and fast and stable. I just downloaded the synaptics touch tap driver but im thinking most wont work with chrome.. i actually just figured out that tapping the touch pad doubles as a click which is pretty awesome..
I also just ordered a backlit keyboard, it cost me 60 bucks totall with shipping and everything. Thing is they already sent me a replacement keyboard and the orginals squekiness has subsided, so i have 2 back up keyboard if the backlit one fails.
I just am in love with this laptop and plan on writing a full review of it on my blog im working on, i know when i was about to purchases this laptop I could barely find any reviews of it except on this site and that was it. So i hope it will help others make this purchase because I am totally happy and will be even happier when I get the windows 7 on it as I am just waiting for the release. I dont feel like messing with an dual boot bul right now. Im also gonna reccoment folks to either just get 4gb of ram because i paid for 6 and i havent seen any enhancements.
im about to install my vm workstation and run ubuntu because I am also an Android nerd i can do more with it on a linux OS. So has anyone had any issues with it?
PS im dont know too much about ram and such.. so here is another question: does a computer only except a certain type of raM? like would you be able to insert ddr3 ram in it? im thinking not but just too sure.. -
Won't take DDR3 RAM (they physically won't fit in DDR2 slots).
-
^Correct. The Studio 1555 accepts up to 800MHz DDR2 SO-DIMM modules. DDR2 SO-DIMMs have 200 pins; DDR3 has 204 pins, and the notch is in a different position. They are physically incompatible.

Can anyone help me? Got my Dell 1555 some days back. My first laptop. Set me back $980 including taxes and shipping, but it's awesome though. Except for one thing I can't figure out, when I leave it on unattended for some hours the display goes blank and the power LED will be pulsating, and it refuses to come out of whatever state it's in. It has to be hard booted again. The display setting is set to never turn off.
The specifications are:
P8600 2.4Ghz
Windows 7 Ultimate RTM 64-bit
2X2 GB Samsung DDR2 800Mhz
1600 X 900 LGD020C WLED
500GB Seagate HDD
512MB ATI Radeon 4570
Backlit keyboard
9-Cell battery
Intel 5300 Wireless N
2.0mp Webcam with Facial Recognition -
The display being set to not turn off doesn't stop the sleep mode activation if you have sleep mode on.
Unless I misunderstood this and your laptop does not wake up from sleep mode, thats a different story though. -
I've used the latest driver on the link you posted and now everything's ok
Uh, i use Chrome but i cannot see any problem with the mousepad functionalities... -

Just got my Studio 1555!
First impressions:
I got it in black chain-link. I'm glad that the chain-link pattern is very subtle, not something you could notice with just a glimpse or unless it's really bright. The palm-rest also has this pattern so it's not just dull grey.
I'm in the process of uninstalling the bloat-ware, though the good thing is that there isn't as much as I thought there would be. I think there are 10-12 programs that I don't need so just getting rid of them (better than having to re-install the whole OS!).
One of the things I was very concerned about having seen some review videos and other reviews elsewhere was the keyboard flex. They showed that if pressed hard the middle of the keyboard would bend inwards. This was one of the first things I tested when I pulled the laptop out of the box, and I can say that the keyboard has a very solid feel to it. There is no flex whatsoever with reasonable force applied.
I got the 1080p screen, and it's nice crisp and clear. I had to up the DPI as the text was too small. One thing I have noticed is that at the moment, the screen isn't as bright in the top corners as it is in the centre and the bottom. Again, this isn't really obvious until you keep looking at it for a few seconds. I'll be leaving the laptop on for a few hours so it might get better by itself by then.
I haven't got round to installing any fancy trackpad software mentioned here a few times yet, but it's working ok as it is. The right and left-click buttons are actually buttons; unlike other laptops I've used which just go down about half a millimetre and are hard to press, these go down a satisfying depth (probably a millimetre and half but you know what I mean).
Can't say anything about the battery life as it needs a 12-hour initial charge.
Oh and it doesn't fit in a standard 15" laptop sleeve. It's just a tiny bit off the sides due the this laptop being 16:9 instead of the more common 16:10.
Detailed review will be coming soon. Any questions, just fire away! Specs are in sig for those interested. -
I think I read on your older sig you ordered on the 8th?!3days after meand in about 2 hours I'll either know if my machine will be coming today or if I'll have to wait another day for the call from the courier
Look forward to the review! If I don't get mine,It'll be good read,Any pics of the black chainlink?Alot of the reviews were in different colours,Or the reflection made it impossible to see..
Cheers -
I tested the touchpad gestures to go back/forward. When you set the tap zones to button 4 and 5, it works in IE, Firefox, Safari and Chrome.
But the three-finger flick only works in IE and Firefox. -
Yeah I ordered on the 8th. I'd have thought you'd get it before me; you're a lot closer to Limerick as well - not to mention you ordered yours earlier as well.
Just installing updates now. They're taking ages.
Will throw some pics up when they're done.
By the way, what are yours specs?
