Ditto, temperature has markedly improved. I'm now feeling a lot more comfortable with the 1557.

anybody had problems with A05? when i updated my 1557, my bios just suddenly had a password. i can't get in. i have never set a password to the bios.

this is the first problem that i have with my unit. so far, i feel i am one of the lucky ones not to have the common problems that many owners are having (video, sound, temp, etc).

    any ideas would be appreciated.

    cheers.

    Kizwan,

Thanks for the recovery package. The Battery indicator did flash red and white as suggested, but for whatever reason it still did not work. I still go to a black screen with flashing underscore. Dell has said they are sending a new HDD within 2 bus. days. I used a USB to SATA drive connector I have, and was able to get all files off of my hard drive, so everything looks fine.
I appreciate the help, but maybe the MBR or something has gone wrong for whatever reason.

Overall though, I really appreciate your help, and will try to keep you guys posted on what the issue is if resolved for anyone else who experiences this problem.

    unplug computer and remove battery

turn system over (lay on a towel or something)

loosen the three screws on the memory compartment (the screws stay in the cover so dont try to remove them)

pop cover off... you have to use a small amount pressure here so be careful.

Find the motherboard battery and remove it.Leave it out for about a minute.

After a minute put the battery back in socket.

    Being careful!!!

    put cover back on tightly.

Turn system over and install battery and connect ac plug.

Hit power button and see what happens.

i think there is one more way to solve this.
shutting down the system then remove the battery,
and try pressing the power button for around 10 secs.
put the battery again and try switching on..

check this first as it doesnt need to open the system . if it didnt. then
    try the 'one cool 'way

I have ask Dell engineer about failed BIOS flash. It is actually covered in warranty. They considered the motherboard is defective because the BIOS flash should success if the motherboard is OK.

hey some thing i have been noticing these days.( i donno if its because of any updates like ao5 bios or dell utility ) is that my system temperature had fallen considerably . now an internet surfing (flash and atleast 10 open pages)+ music +lan surfing gives a temperature drop for cpu . from 55(older) to around 48degrees(which is the temperature while iam writing this ) gpu temp is around 52 -55 degrees.
no change in the performance difference though. any guys experiencing this ...?????????
note: no other chnge here (atmospheric temps, humidity. as such)

from what i see they have increased the fan rpms for different sets of temperatures in the a05.everest tells me that my fan runs between 2000-3000 rpm all the time.coz the system stays between 50-55 all the time.as soon as it gets below 48 or maybe 45 the fan is turned off and it gets back on at 52.they r all cpu temps btw.
prior to a05 the rpms were quite less than this.

yes i was also noticing it.. that the fan speed of cpu getting higher
like me iam guessing that u r using the new everest 5.50 which shows the exact fan speeds of cpu and gpu differently...

How that can be possible? Both CPU & GPU using same FAN.

yes I'm using the new everest 5.50.
and yeah there is only one fan coz the gpu is an embedded one.I'm not quite sure what's the gpu fan speed that everest reports but its always at 30% and always keeps changing.sometimes its 20-30 and sometimes 2000-3000 but its always 30%.Now thats 1% with quite a huge spread.lol
i have a feeling that the gpu fan speed is more of temp dependent and a false reading.whenever the temp comes down due to the heatsink the false reading is also brought down or so...a software bug,to be more brief. ;)

On the 1558 I also see the GPU gan stuck at 30% all the time but the speed does change after a few minutes. I assume this is because of the bug or the signal not being there.

I am not sure abou the 1557 or 1558 but my Vostro1400 had only one fan for both CPU and GPU, It had the plagued 8400GS GPU.
I will not be surprised if there is only one fan for Studio15

I know this is a strange question to ask but can anyone post the dell facial recognition application on rapidshare or something?

    Here's the situation:

When I ordered my 1557, I had facial recon included. I had to change my order by phone, but some idiot I got would remove something else when I added one thing. I thought I had fixed all the mistakes, but did not catch the fact that facial recognition had been removed. All though Dell didn't charge me for it, I would still like to try the application. Anyone willing to help me out?

Don't see any.their policies are quite strict. If it had been the system replacement then it might have happened.moreover i heard that my intel 5300UN isn't compatible with hm55 or something. So there is no chance though i will write them an email abt this thing. :)

hey kapi just check the prices for 1557 and 1558 in the dell site/ (dell india)

there has been significant price drop for 1557 but 1558 its almost same. (guess what will be the reason)

    it appears that the similar config (with core i7 720qm and 4 gb ddr3 1333, similar warranty, screen size etc)(differs by 4570 and 5470 , pm55 and hm55 , etc .
    1557-
The Dell Online Store: Build Your System

    1558-
The Dell Online Store: Build Your System

and we can see a price difference of around 10,000 rupees( around $ 230)

I heard there is an issue with the HD5470 and all new orders were cancelled. How true is that ?
i read that in a thread on this site only.
and i don't think that only hm55 and HD5470 would make it 10000 less. That can be an error just like once they were selling some part upgrade or maybe some software for 300000.Though i'm aware of the fact that the studios cost a little less now coz recently i met someone who had a system with the same configuration as of mine and had paid only 56000 instead of 61000 which i had paid 5 months ago.

Well the time has come.... I thought I may last to June, but I happily use my laptop 10 hours a day for work, and I am now getting ansi...I want to tinker.

I have the 1557, 1080 line screen, the base i7 processor, 160GB Intel SSD, 6GB RAM, Blu-ray drive, HSPA card, 802.11n wifi, bluetooth, the larger battery.

So...upgrades? Any ideas entertained...I feel I will be pretty limited in what I can do. How about retro-fitting the 1558 touch screen? I would most likely not try that, but thought to ask....any ideas.

And I haven't done the copper shim, or anything to tinker with the thermal paste side of things...my temps are warm enough, but not so much that I worry. The clearance offered by the big battery and the SSD I think help in respect of all of that.

    So...thoughts, anyone?

    Regards,

    Digittt

The copper shim looks interesting, you might want to try that (I would but not now). I'm not very satisfy with the Heatsink design on this computer though.

If I had adopted "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", I would still be using my Apple 2E and playing Apple Panic. I am a tinkerer, and historically have got things more or less right. There are some disaster stories where I opened up my digital watches when I was a kid, but since then mostly good.

I think the copper shim may be on the list, and possibly a cooling pad - although I'm not sure the cooling pad will bring any benefits given the big battery gives you air flow under the chassis?

I would love to upgrade the CPU, but I think I can only climb up one more rung on the i7 ladder as I'm not sure the 1557 will hand the top of the range (forgive me for not knowing the names of the chips anymore, the odd drink reboots the RAM fairly regularly). I think the next chip up didn't give you any substantial boost in speed, so I don't think it's worth it. I don't think the i5's with the higher base clock speeds would go in there either...but happy to be told otherwise.

I haven't tried overclocking yet, that's also on the list once I've applied myself a little in improving the thermal position. It doesn't normally have a problem with temps, it's warm, and gets hot occasionally, but I've never had any problems with freezes or throttling as far as I am aware. But no sense in throwing in any overclocking just yet.

So no more ideas? Anyone tried the 1558 touch screen yet....just curious as to whether it's a damp squib or a really useful feature. I already have to carry around a pack of screen wipes, as it is a magnet for grease, so I'm assuming the touch screen would make this infinitely worse. I seriously am not going to put one on my 1557, but I am interesting in how useful it is....who knows, maybe the wife has to inherit the 1557...

I repair electronics during the day and I don't mean swapping out pcb's, its on a board level. So the last thing I want to do when I get home is tinker with something that's already working the way I like.
I understand your enthusiasm and think it's great that most of you guys want to get down to the "nuts and bolts" level. This kind of place helps to deliver past rev 1.

I got my mobo changed but still i face the same problem that the backlit lights up on its own when i shut down the system and start it again while on battery power.I'm getting a new battery now from dell.hope that resolves the issue.

Many ppl have had problems with their adapters.Issues r like sparking noise, high temps and not charging the battery.

It is possible to upgrade the CPU. I can't think of anything else it wouldn't be possible. Even the chipset, PM55, support all i7 CPU. Certain i5 CPU can outperform our i7 CPU but not with current PM55 chipset. I'm sure i5 with at least HM55 chipset much better than us.

guys, can anybody perform geekbench benchmark & post it here. Two set of results would be great (with BIOS A04 & A05). Thanks. :D

    Hi, I need some help....

I'm having some problems on my power cord which now the blue led went completely off and it doesn't go on at all... :( though before it happens the led had started to flashing when it was power on. The weird part is the seems to be charging the laptop just fine :) ....anyone knows what does it means ???
Is just the led that is died or would it be some problem in the power brick ?

Any thoughts about it would be really appreciated.... :)

    Thx....
