Thanks Jayson, so I am curious to know, what screen sizes are confirmed and finalized for production on any new laptop refresh Dell will be putting out? I wouldn't think it would need to be a secret, what is would be what it will be using internally.

I would like to know if any new laptop will feature more WLED options and/or higher screen resolutions?

Slot-load is a positive, back-lit keyboard affirmative, touch capacative buttons go for launch, and fingerprint reader.

When are we to expect an anouncment of new systems?

If you had typed that out a little better and included some remotely nice slide or even an HTML table I'm sure engadget would have made a story of this by now.

I doubt any of you have any 'secret sources'

First, there is no way there will be anything higher than the 9600m in the Studio 16 if it evr comes out. The 9800m series are just too heat consuming.

Second, there wont be a consumer laptop with a WLED or full RGB gamut screen. They already have a laptop with that, the dell precision m6400. And if they do, it will be a 300$++ upgrade. And with some of you guys thinking $160 is overpriced, that screen wont be possible...

there is no secret source here.. there is no official launch date yet.. there is no official specifications yet.. all there is is a timeframe for the refresh of the XPS line. 1 week left to november.. we came a long way. lol

You missed my point. Engadget seems like it would take any thing that looks remotely good and toss it on their website with a link/quote.

Okay, I can say with centainty that the new systems will have Centrino 2, the Intel WiFiLink 5100/5300, eSATA/USB 2.0 Combo Port(s), WLED screens, back-lit keyboard, fingerprint reader, and slot-load drives. New exotic materials are also being used for the systems :)

ASUS are looking at bamboo based notebooks, as its a fast growing sustainable wood.
Perhaps thats Dell's route as well?

There's no such thing as sustainable. Something has to give to make room for the bamboo. They'll displaced all the rice fields in asia and turn them into bamboo fields.

atbnet, you asked where we got those battery life comparisons?

    anandtech . com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=3435&p=13 (remove spaces)

Of course, this only applies to the macbooks, that macbooks run better with OS X than Vista (probably on purpose), but it makes you wonder... what if we could run OS X or something on a non-macbook, and what kinda of performance that would give us.

Just curious as the specs for studio XPS mentioned "a full wireless solution including integrated mobile broadband, WiMAX and Bluetooth/UWB support".

Anybody know if this one has Qualcomm's Gobi chipset ? I feel so as they announced the same back in April.

    Any comments?

I agree as well. The new macbook looks spectacular. Aside from program compatibility issues (which are somewhat resolved, but can still be inconvinient to have to dual boot vista/xp and os x just to work around those) I'm definitely considering getting a macbook.

Right now, I'm waiting on the Canadian release of the Vaio SR200 series and/or the Z series, the macbook, and the studio xps 13. >_<

Hopefully, they blow me off my feet, in the good sense (not the overpriced sense). >_>

The macbook lasts the longest for it's size of battery. That's what really sells it for me. I just pray to god the XPS can remotely compare to that batterylife.

ok as we know apple is apple.. and u pay for that..
dell will be launching good machines better than the macs in terms of specs.. in termos of design.. i dunno how u would cope with a mini displayport.. so little usbs.. and limite trackpad etc.. u get where im getting to.. a mac is a mac for mac users..
dell is a DELL for pc users. hehehe
and im pretty sure those 9400 are going to have 9400M plus some other graphics.. pretty sure in my heart i mean.

Ok.. but you still have to use OS X. Since Apple has great control over the hardware, it is expected that it would provide better battery life. Vista is installed on thousands of different configurations.

...which is my only gripe with the Macbook as is. T_T

I'm so anxious to see the Studio XPS 13... Though... I'll probably end up waiting for the first people who ordered to receive and review theirs before I finalize my own decision on which to buy. Unless... Studio XPS 13 starts at M1330's current price. :D (lol yea right, in my dreams... T_T)

I just installed the new graphic driver released for Dell Studios. Apparently, Dell listed these laptops that use this driver.

    Computers : Studio Laptop - 1435, 1535, 1536, 1537, 1735, 1737;
    Studio XPS Laptop - 1640

Judging by whatever that is written, a refresh Studio 17 will be released soon and also a new laptop named Studio XPS 1640. There is also Studio 1435. 14" Studio perhaps? So, this might not be a rumour afterall.

Good find. The Studio 14 was supposed to arrive with the others back in June but it got shelved. The Studio 1536 was the AMD version that we never saw. So who knows if they really exist.

Those 1537's are the Montevina refresh of the Studio 15 (1536 is the AMD Studio).

I really hope we see a update soon as I'm getting quite tired of this slow piece of **** I'm currently using. If only I had enough money for the MacBook Pro I wouldn't have to wait as much.

I think it probably will be a nvidia chipset/graphics the same as in the new MacBook Pro. The Powerpoint slides on the first page says "Hybrid SLI" which is what nvidia calls the combo.

I think the reason they took so long to release this Studio XPS is that they wanted the nvidia chip. I can't see a company waiting this long to implement stuff that has been available since July (unless they had enough parts ordered to last them over 4 months).

As the time of the release aproaches and I am limiting down my shortlist for a buy, I will be greatly disapointed if the best GPU offered is 9600.

DELL took all the time needed to prepare these machines. Knows all the competition since it is the last company refreshing.

If they offer what others have offered months ago, I will think it twice before buying a DELL. Unless they had a really, REALLY good reason for the delay. We will see...

what machine you looking at buying? must understand that to fit a bigger gpu than the 9600 under a 15 or 16" is not very viable.. usually you will see bigger in a 18" ? or im i mistaken? has any other vendor done the contrary?

well true if you go to http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_m_series.html there are three columns i would say they would stick the middle one, Performance and Multimedia, which yes includes the new 9650M.. but probably wont be a standard, i doubt they will put 9700M's or higher under the hood, i wouldnt want that personally. taking into account it compromizes on heat, battery etc. prob on the future gaming model that should subs. the M1730

The fact that in the new graphics driver the Studio XPS 1640 is mentioned, does seem to point towards an ATI graphics card being an option for this notebook? Seems weird otherwise.

As the 1340 is missing, perhaps the 13 inch model will include the new Nvidia chipset while the 1640 will not?

Anyway, I like that the 14 inch Studio notebook is popping up again, I still hope it will be released someday. Then my next notebook would be between the new Studio XPS 1340 and that 14 inch Studio for me. :) Especially if the form factor / design is tailored to the Montevina chipset (slimmer).

It would make some sense to use the Nvidia 9400 for the 1340 and then maybe ATI switchable graphics in the 1640. Who knows.
