I tried to wait Dell, I really tried. I've been following this thread for two months now.
But with the end of the year coming, the length of time with a dead laptop, and most importantly that 30% off coupon that just saved me $638 on a loaded HP HDX 16t, well I couldn't wait any longer for you to get your act together on just releasing specs, nevermind fixing intial glitches and having me wade through initial reviews and first-hand impressions.
Thanks to everyone in this thread for the entertainment and here's hoping that your prayers will be answered. I'll be checking in out of curiosity of course.
-
yes its sad.. but im sure they have their reasons (nvidias new platform?) and stock issues.. which they have to figure out..
-
I too was hoping to see the specs and design for the Studio XPS 16. But considering that I had to return an XPS M1530 back in March because of the poor Samsung screen and horrible sound quality, I figured that Dell probably wouldn't be improving the quality of their laptops any time soon.
Considering the current sale at Sony, I pulled the trigger on a loaded Vaio FW290, T9400 CPU, Centrino 2, 512 MB ATI 3650 video, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB 7200 rpm Hitachi hard drive. The Full HD (1920x1080) dual lamp screen is absolutely stunning and the sound quality is fairly good for a laptop. Plus it has Blu-ray read/write. Not to mention the modern design and lightweight system. All for about $1500 with discounts. Dell would not probably not be able to match that for a new system. Had it for a few days now and am completely happy with the laptop. Although I have been a long time customer of Dell with a Latitude D600 and XPS 210 desktop, Dell is probably going to lose a lot of customers this holiday season because of the lack of updated products and strong competition from Sony and HP. -
If by November 22nd they don't have it out I order a Sony Z series. Don't care how much it costs me screw Dell they honestly are terrible for making us wait so long on a top of the line notebook. A Sony Z has more features and less weight than any other 13 inch notebook other than a macbook air but that's a different class of notebook.

Most people here seem to want an Nvidia GPU over an ATI, but I'm seriously hoping for an ATI. I'm hoping Jayson's slides are wrong about the Hybrid SLI, or Dell changed their mind. Back in December I got myself an XPS m1330 and loved it, since almost everything about it was exactly what I wanted. It just had one huge problem...that Nvidia 8400M. Everything else in that m1330 worked perfectly, but that GPU was a nightmare. You're going to think I'm lying, but I had a total of 6 motherboard replacements and 2 complete system replacements because of that GPU. In the last instance, a little over a month ago, the GPU died only minutes after a new motherboard was fired up. I had it with this thing. Long story made short, that laptop is now gone and I need a replacement. The problem is that I don't like anything that's on the market now. I honestly want my m1330 back...just not the Nvidia 8400M.
I know that the 8400M and 8600M are a special kind of horrible, the likes of which the world will hopefully never see again. And I know they're not typical of Nvidia products, but I honestly just don't trust Nvidia anymore. I'm not going to say that I'll never buy anything with an Nvidia again, but if I'm given the choice between an Nvidia and an ATI on the same computer, my choice will be ATI hands down. I want good performance, but I need reliability with that performance. Like I said, I want my m1330 back, but with a GPU that actually works for longer than 5 minutes before dying. Now I'm hoping that this Studio XPS 13 (or 14, or whatever) will be the m1330 without the problems. If Dell makes this an m1330 version 2.0 with an ATI GPU, I'll be one of the first people to buy it. -
I think i'm one of the few people who got a XPS 1530 after reading this thread a while back. I'm scared of Dell not offering a 15.4 and replacing it with a 16". For me the weight is important (under 6 lbs is ok) and from the initial slides it seemed that Dell would not offer anything between 13.3" and 16" and that was a deal breaker for me.
The refurb price with a 15% coupon also sealed the deal for me. Got a T8300, 256mb nVidia 8600, 4Gb Ram, 250 GB HD, Intel 4965 and LED screen for $751 includes tax and shippingNot bad if i say so myself. Best part i sold my 1420 for $750
So far only complaints are the weak speakers and i do not like the HD & power Indicator LED's on the front as i cannot see them when it's on my lap. Integrated modem would have been nice but i doubt i would ever use it so no worries. I have also been getting the weird power adapter error when booting quite frequently which is a huge hassle. I just upgraded to the unreleased A-11 bios from Dell's ftp (search the XPS section on the forums and you should find it). Only time will tell if it fixed the power adapter issue during booting requiring me to push F1 to move forward.
One thing i absolutely love is the LED screen, its literally as if a haze has been lifted, my old 1420 had a grainy Samsung screen which i never realized how bad it was until i got the XPS. Yes it may be outdated technology but for my purposes it suits me well and i seriously doubt i could get a deal like this on a new version for quite a while.
I'll still be following the the thread though as i'm also curious what Dell puts out as the replacement. -
I might be tempted to get a sony but with all those battery recalls and none of them have a decent gpu
-
why not go with acer 6920G? it has nvidia 9500GS...and best of all, its cheap -
Yeh, My Acer is pulling up really well (8930G).
Those pictures Jayson posted a page back were fake, no way would a 14in notebook have space for speakers next to the keyboard. Only a 15.4in could fit that. And I'm sure the 8.9in one is a Acer Aspire One. -
Yes but to play any of the current decent games around today you'll probably need nothing less than a 9700gt.
-
At that weight you can get a 14", like the Samsung X460.
Vaio Z weighs 1,5kg. -
-
I mean large speaker grilles like the ones on that picture. If thats true, then the keyboard is going to be very uncomfortable to type on.
Just checked the E6400, i didnt mean tiny ones like that. I mean large ones like on the Lastgen MacBook Pro or the lastgen dell D830 -
qaz333 , that pic doesnt mean that, that pc is a 14" .. actually its a pic that popped up on the inspiron 12" page but no one mentioned what model that was.. it surely has a design of the new XPS.. the question is the size of the screen.. know that we have the inspiron 12 and 8.9 right next to it can someone confirm the maths? get it... =)
-
Well well well. Cant wait to see what laptops come out. Although any future laptop of mine will have to be 17.1in or above now, Ive gotten really used to the extra screen space on my Acer.
-
qaz333 .. i use a 13" connected to a 24" lcd monitor with a dock.. believe me its a much nicer setup to have.. u have portability and screen size together.. =)
-
Hi all,
First things first: Oh_so_lol! Is it only me, or the thread's title is absolutely sarcastic? The said notebooks, wait... Coming Soon?!
[rant]
I opted out from watching this thread some month ago only to find out today, that the missed 50 pages of it were filled with the same sick guesstimate as they were the former 50! Yet, it amazed me to discover by the end of the long read, that as I read, the thread did (actually does) get longer and longer... to no practical conclusion out of it by the end other than Jayson vs qaz333 dispute was the only entertaining part that kept me going through it! LOL So guys, make sure to spur some pretty entertaining fuss above the thread, or I go on to officially demand from the site admins to put an immediate end to this ppl's (me including) time waster!!
[/rant]
Cheers,
AdiQue
PS OMG when exactly have I decided to deflect from the righteous path (sticking to ASUS as for buying choices) over to the dark side (DELL's lowly reputation of being a cheap volume producer)?? -
Holy frick Dell, just announce them...
-
Xcruciatingly Painful Silence.
-
-
Brilliant!
When is the announcement date again? the 17th? I've lost track since the first page. -
Tomorrow, offers on the old XPS here in Germany expire. You see, there's always this spark of hope... I'm beginning to hate it.
What I'm looking for in my new machine-to-be:
Centrino 2
Hybrid-SLI
Graphics of the nVidia 9xxx generation (or Ati's equivalent)
a 64-bit system
a resolution of 1680x1050 (or equivalent if screen size varies)
Is anyone aware of a NB that offers these kinds of characteristics (yet)? I mean, except for DELL who obviously are NOT offering it (yet)? -
about a 64bit OS.. i would say as an option.. standard they will never.
about the resolution im sure ull get that as an option!
and forsure those graphics are going to be nvidia 9 series.. -
the new 13" xps laptops are on extended test at the moment. i saw them in the factory last night lol i must say they look nice... they are called "Jolie" on the manufacturing floor but customers will know them as XPS Studio 1340. coming very soon i suppose. but crap, they will not be built in Ireland! Poland will do it instead.

Shub -
Jolie? sounds like christmas
-
-
but at this point I don't understand the last slide at all...
November or January, this is the problem...
-
i speculate they mean december for delivery in priority markets and global outflow (production at fullest) for all markets to be in goal for january..
-
Mah... the slide says the end of january... can we believe it?
-
LOL..good one!
Patiently waiting...still
Cin -
-
I am just tired of all this speculation.
The guy who mentionned that after 1000 posts we are exactly at the same point we were when we were at 500 or even further back was soooooo right.
I just wish DELL to come out with a nice official announcment soon, so that we can finaly see where the new XPSs stand vs the competition... -
-
-
now will they be out this month for order? Im 99% thinking YES.. will you receive them this month? Im 99% sure NOT. In DECEMBER? Yes before the festive season for markets that sell more consumer lines.. (USA, UK, etc) so if u living in countries that DELL doesnt have a good presence i would guess you got to wait for january like the slide say. -
i just contacted Dell, and got laughed at saying, they would know if a product would be canceled well in advance.
maybe it's a new year refresh as stated and not a festive refresh -
I am tired by the fact that I know that DELL will have a new laptop sooner or later and it prooves to be much later than sooner.
(Sidenote: again even if you havent told anything, all those with sane mind would presume that DELL would offer new laptops. The contrary would mean that DELL just went off business)
So your posting or not, wouldnt change my state of mind, neither my feeling of being tired. (Which I self provoked because I decided that I will not get my new laptop until the XPS is out so that I can choose having in mind all the offers from the big notebook companies)
You have just shown a few slides that you argue they are real. There is no other support to them. Based on this fact, I can say nothing for or against them. It is just an additional piece of information. A very intresting one, but just that.
So please do not feel attacked.
Bah, I just realised that I am repeating myself repeatedly in this post (I am physically tired too!!). Anyway. The message is there.
Another sidenote: You have admitted that you were saddened by that delay, I am tired. so what is the fuz? -
so...the news are that tomorrow finish all the offers. and they should come out the new models, so we could have it at home next month!!
that´s all!!!
one question: will spain be one of those luckys Countries like USA or UK?
I edit: new offers in Spain till 19th November!!!what´s that??? -
suko69.. i dunno.. u might even get them first in japan.. or in australia than the US.. u will know.. when u know. lol
-
-
Well,
In the Uk it looks like yet another run of "Days of Deals" 13th to 21st November, so no new XPS range for the next week. -
I'm genuinely fascinated to see how these units will be priced in the UK. We have a long history of getting absolutely shafted with regard to just about every consumer product or service you can think of. With that in mind, the Studio XPS isn't packing cutting edge hardware at this point... and due to some greedy foreign bankers, we're all broke!
There is a very real possibility that the Studio XPS, Dell's revised 'premium line' could very well arrive still born in a market that simply cannot support its exuberant and stylish excess.
Time will tell. -
I just checked the Dell site Germany. Strangely enough, the savings for the m1330 end on the 12th, that is, today, but the savings on the m1530 go on until the 13th.
-
...i guess nothing...
-
A sales rep told me that new deals are usually introduced on Thursdays. Tomorrow is a Thursday.
-
I don't think Dell are going to start selling the new XPS tomorrow. They usually announce them first and a couple of weeks later they put them up on the website.
I think Dell are going to announce the new xps line within a week, and start selling them near december.
But i am just speculate.. all we can do is wait -
Perhaps the downturn in the economy has delayed a press release or even pushed back the release? again I don't know, christmas is coming up and perhaps dell is waiting after their black friday deals to release these for christmas?
-
god **** it dell! just when i was about to purchase a laptop now i have to wait to check these out some more
-
how many time have you waited??
Dell Studio XPS 13 and 16 - Coming Soon?
