Hi everybody. I'm rather new here (long time lurker though :p ). I'm being offered a Dell Latitude D800 (2nd hand - 98%) with the price of US$ 1,080. Specs seemed to be fine (Pentium M 735 1.7GHz, DDR 512MB, HDD 60GB 5400RPM, 15.4" WXGA, DVD-CDRW, Intel PRO/Wireless 2200), but I'd like to know whether I could replace the GeForce Go 5200 (32MB only) with a better VGA card?

If the card is fixed, maybe I would consider buying an Inspiron 6000D w/ X300 128MB (Centrino 1.6 GHz, other specs are similar to the D800) for US$ 1,050  ...

Any help would be appreciated, thanks :D .

    - A GeForce FX Go 5650 128MB had been mentioned here. I wonder if there are anything else to fit in that AGP 4X slot?

    - And here I found an NVIDIA QUADRO FX Go700. I mean... how great is it? And where the heck could I buy one (if it's not too darn high :p )?

    Hi everyone,
I am new to these forums and found them through google, they seems pretty cool. I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 and want to upgrade to the best video card, (M10) aka ati radeon 9600 pro turbo. It can be used with the 8500's but with a cooling mod... You can purchase a refurbished one from Dell Spare Parts. Ebay doesn't have that many at all and some are overpriced. If you want to get a m10, I think the only way you can is if you say you are in a business and not home/office user, because first of all, the 9600 wasn't made for the 8500,(but can work fine with only a cooling mod), and secondly the only laptop that is "alloud" to have its gpu changed is the XPS and I think the 9300. But yesterday, Steven from Dell said that only the XPS can have a GPU upgrade. Also, I believe that the M10 is 200$ refurbished w/o shipping. They usually never will send you a brand new one mainly because it is an older model and they don't reproduce as many componets for these 2 year old laptops, at least thats what I think.
    GPU to M10 SWITCH: http://www.bay-wolf.com/8500video.htm
    COOLING MOD: http://www.bay-wolf.com/8500videoheat.htm

Dell Spare Parts #: 1-800-357-3355 but I think the new one is 1-800-915-3355, I will check tomorrow.

If you know where else I/we can get the M10 please let us know.

    Thanks,

    Matt

I got a M10 and installed it into my 8500...
It got cooked but this was probably due to my poor heat modding... "it will do".. didn't...
    :(

Getting the right bits, in NZ, to do the mod was a huge chore... notably the piece of copper!!

If someone wants to sell me a pre-"heat modded" board then please email me... I am a gamer and thisa GeForce sux.

    Thanks.

    ok I also have a 5100.

now, the 5100 and the 5150 share cards, except for the 9000 and the geforce 5200 2 go. people have already mentioned that the 9000 is compatable, but what about the geforce 2 go?

I ask because the geforce has dx9 support, which some games now require, and the 9000 only supports dx8.

the 6000 doesn't have a dedicated slot for the graphics card, so you can't just buy one and insert it in like desktop PCs.

The only way you could upgrade your card is if you bought the 6000D board (has a dedicated slot) and installed it. Then you would have to buy the video card.

If you did it, you'll be voiding your warranty and looking at a cost of around 700 or more which is almost the same price for a new 6000 right now.

the only card supported for the 6000 is the x300. And if you got the 6000d, you should have the card already.

    Hi guys,

Im very new here but have been reading alot of the posts.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 with the 64Mb GeForce GO 4200 graphics card. My LCD is doing some very weird stuff and i strongly believe that the video card is responsible for it.

I am considering getting the 128Mb nVidia GeForce FX Go5650 or the M10, but at the moment more towards the nVidia Go5650 because ive actually managed to find somewhere that sell it (ebay).

Has anyone tried this upgrade before? Im very interested to hear ur experience. Ive asked the ebay dude and he claims that they have "run these through a full test of all functions and they work great. " However according to:

    http://www.bay-wolf.com/8500video.htm

There have been "ONE" or "some" (*shrugs*) overheat problems. I dont think i would like to muck too much around with the overheat mod.

Theres also an item here at grays online:
    http://www.graysonline.com.au/lot.asp?LOT_ID=659081

which is quite tempting. What do i dO???

    Thanks.

Interesting, I've got a rather out-dated Inspiron 8100 with an nVida Ge Force Go 2 GPU wit 32MB of memory. This is not a lot and when playing games it is generally very good but when playing at hugher resolutions, there is a quite a bit of lag. I am considering a GPU upgrade.

The bay wolf instructions look quite good but also looks like a very complicated procedure and something could easily go wrong. With my "snails-pace" Pentium III processor, I think it's better me saving up for a new lappy.

You can only upgrade to cards specifically offered for the 1505, so the 7800 card is not an option.

How about replacing the x1400 in the e1505 with an x1600? Is there a sticker or something on the x1400 in the e1505 which rips if you try take it out? Can you just put the original card back in when you send your notebook in for servicing...?

No, as said, ONLY the cards offered can be put into your system. So for the e1505, that is the x1400. That's it. The BIOS will not support anything else, and it is doubtful anything else will fit or have the proper cooling. The x1400 only

Like sublime said you have to have BIOS support in order to change the video card. This makes it where you can only upgrade to video cards that are offered for your laptop so no 1600, no 7800 or anything else unless Dell has it as an option on their website for the E1505.

The cards that is offered for the E1505 is the only cards you can use.

I've been looking at the New D820. Ideally would like to have a gaming graphics card it in rather than the NVidia Quadro NVS 120M .

After finding this thread, I scoured Dell'ss ite to find out more information about the graphics used on the motherboard.

the controller/memory uses a NVidia G72M on 256-MB video memory.

After searching on google as to what that meant in plain english it popped up a GeForce Go 7400 reference to the G72M. Does that mean I can swap the Quadro for the go 7400?

i just received a e1505 for from my parents as a birthday present, and i don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth, but if i had a choice i would have configured it with a discrete graphics card instead of the integrated intel graphics. i've been reading through this forum, but i'm still a bit confused about whether or not i can upgrade my video.

can an e1505 with integrated graphics be upgraded, or does it not have the slot, even if upgraded graphics is a configuration option? and if it can be upgraded, would i need to get a 9-cell battery to power it?

The NVS 120M IS a 7400 GO. I don't think I would go to the trouble and cost to swap the two as they will give very similar performance. Instead, look into flashing the card with a 7400 BIOS, but even that may be more trouble than its worth. From whta I've read the 120M performs quite well in games.

Well, from what I gather, you cannot upgrade your e1505 to dedicated graphics, like the X1300/1400 if you have the Intel Graphics 950.

Still a nice B'day present. I get jackshyte on my B'day, so you shouldnt be complaining.

What about the E1505? Can those be upgraded? Or not really?

One thing I wish I couldve got Alienware for is it has even MORE options to replace then Dell does.. which is already alot. =)

Dell is great if you need to replace something easily.. better then other brands.

Hello everyone, I'm a newbie with this stuff...so be gentle.

I have an inspiron 9100 with a 64mb ATI Mobility Radeon 9700. My processing power and ram are fine, but I would love to upgrade the video so that I can play the next-gen games out there (even older ones like BF2).

Are there upgrades available? If so, what are they? I've searched but I just keeping reading that I can't do it. I figured you all would know. I didn't see other posts regarding the 9100.

    Thanks!

You can only upgrade the video card is there was another card offered for that computer. The only other one I have found is here:

    http://www.sell.com/2253F5

    That is about it. :(

Personally I would just wait and get a new laptop. You don't want to keep soaking money into older technology.

E1505 users. I hear SOMETIME maybe late 2006 but realistically might be another year or 2 that they may offer the express slot video cards.. Might be a idea.. but since its all so new.. who knows when it might really come out.

the express slot is only 1x right?, if so it wont have the bandwidth to support any kind of graphics, let alone performance oriented, let alone the fact that a performance card and memory cant feasibly be shrunk small enough for that form factor, and last but not least how would you expect to cool it, high end graphics are hot hot hot, thats why you only find them in large notebooks that arent really practical for on the go use, for serious gaming, build a gaming specific desktop,

The only way you would be able to upgrade to those is if you can find a hacked BIOS for the E1505, and I don't know if the X1600/X1800 have successfully been put in the E1505. Now, if Dell starts offering a better card soon for the e1505, you can upgrade to that.

I have a dell inspiron 6000, it makes use of the ATI MOBILITY RADEON x800 card with 128 mb. I want to upgrade it because i want to be able to run a new MMO comming out called Pirates of the Burning Sea (needs 256 mb). I have also read that my laptop makes use of PCI-Express and i can upgrade my cards, my questions for you are....

    1) Can i do this with a Dell Inspiron
    2) If yes what graphics card would you recomend for gamming? (Price $150 down)
    3) How should i install this card?

Thanks for the help, and i also have my own thread i made since i didnt see anyone with my specific questions. Reply here or there if you would like... thank you.

chances are you mean x300. i'm pretty sure no one has gotten an x800 in an inspiron 6000, but i could be mistaken.

it says all over this forum dell's can be upgraded. however only with compatible cards. me being the not-so-smart nerd that i am don't know of any gpu's dell could replace the x300 with.

so do you think its possible to put the 7900GS from the e1705 into the e1505 also? That would be a perfect upgrade :)

    Hi everyone,
just found that topic about replacing graphic cards. So I'm thinking about getting a new Dell XPS. But I know that there will be coming DirectX10 graphic cards for desktop computers pretty soon. Might I be able to replace the Nvidia Geforce Go 7900GTX, which I'd be ordering with the ne notebook, with a new gen. graphic card?
