The page says "Starting at 5.54lbs (2.51 kg)". *SIGH*, that's what I was worried about. "Thin" is useless if it's heavy. Being thin may look nice, but ultimately it is weight that affects mobility. 5.54 lbs is way too heavy.

    525M? Not too bad. Just a lower-clocked 540M.

    1920x1080... YES.

Remember, dell is an American company.
    5.54 lbs vs M15x 4.08kg2 (9lbs) .

    It's MAGIC!
If u want a real light laptop, u have to choose Asian PC company. because it's different behaviors.

Lots of ppl thought 10 lbs of a laptop is stil acceptable in U.S  .
As an asian, I couldn't justify it before.

Dell understands the importance of light weight and has made plenty of very light laptops, e.g. the 2.2-lb E4200 remains one of the lightest laptops ever made. For the XPS 15z, a 4-cell battery would probably reduce the weight to around 5.0 lb but it looks like there won't be a small battery option.

How come PCMag and Laptopmag both got about 6 hrs of battery life while Engadget only got 3.5 hours? Defective battery? Glitchy optimus?

Yeah, I wanted a Vostro or Latitude based on the Adamo or Vostro V13/V130 design, not another MacBook clone like the XPS 15z, unoriginal design. If I wanted a MacBook I would buy one, come on Dell, there are many other ways to design a nice looking notebook...!

Seems impressive as specs and quality. But design is really disturbing. It s not bad looking, but "SAME". Even with the same form if they could make it dark or black like Sony or previous XPS 16, it would be more striker.

slightly bigger and not as powerful cpu/gpu as the MBP. looks like im back to camping in the envy14 refresh thread

im sorry dell, but even a fraction bigger then the MBP and people are not going to buy it. its sad but we care what other people think and its a krappy MBP copy. i get 17% off so the fully spec'd is ~$1250, over 1K cheaper then my GF's new MBP, but i cant have her having a smaller but more powerful laptop then me.

Unless you are looking at the ~$2000 MBP the 525 is better than the entry level 15in MBP GPU.

well i am, hence the admission its over 1k cheaper.

i just dont get bringing out a device 3 months after its obvious competitor, with the same form factor, and not at least matching the CPU. i can afford the extra money, so i want the option to be able to spend it.

I don't see why it's bad to be slightly bigger than the MBP. It does have a bigger screen and the 15" MBP maxed out at 1680x1050 native.

What I'm wondering is why it's not live on the US Dell site yet. I got my credit card standing by.

Never mind... I used the holding page posted earlier to find it... gonna order the $1099 one... pretty good considering it's only $100 more for the 1080p screen and a 2nd year of warranty.

It is true that Dell should make more original design of laptop, I think the general idea is right that they are trying to get close in size to MBP. Dell does have some good designs, but dont know why they abandon those.

Thanks... like I just posted, I found it using the same link from earlier in this thread.

They still don't have it on the XPS Laptops brand link but now they show the splash for the 15z when you click on laptops.

$1100 for a 1080p is a decent price considering the Sony CB is $1100+... it doesn't ship until 6/3 though... I'm so impatient.

glad to know im not the only one looking forward to a 14"

My issue of course is when :(

the alienware has been tempting me over but then the 15z's workspace of 1920x1080 may make me bite. I dont think the 14" will be able to pull off such a large workspace.

I was waiting for the 13" or 14" from Dell but from what I see for the 15z notebook the cost will be high and the notebook won't be very light so I guess I will go with the Latitude 6420 notebook. I really liked my XPS M1330 notebook I was hopeing that they would have something similar.

I posted about it briefly in the other thread.

I like it and it does look better than in the photos... although it's heavier and thicker than you would think.

The screen is great, glossy, but really sharp and bright. The keyboard is okay, I've been using a MacBookAir recently so I'm used to the chiclet style and no dedicated pg/hm/end keys... the backlight is great (the latest MBAs have no backlight).

I like the curved design and while the chrome trim is blingy... it's a nice aesthetic (just don't bedazzle it). The left palm rest gets a bit warm (I assume that's the location of the HD) and there doesn't look like an easy way to replace it (I wanted to go SSD).

This is going to be a keeper... if they made a 14z with FullHD, I would be sad-face, but my main notebook rarely travels so this will be fine.

It looks similar to a MBP... but its not as minimal so you can tell it's a WinPC... plus the Dell logo doesn't light up on the lid :D .

I may bite on the 15.6 tho.

I would imagine that dell would utilize the 1600x900 (hopefully) for the 14"

whereas the 15.6 uses the 1920x1080 so it is a decent step up in work space.

....saying that outloud (or typing for that matter) doesnt seem worth the extra 2" in width....

I think the problem with the 14in model will be the lower quality screen. More than likely it will have a 1600x900 res screen option(which is fine for a 14in machine), but when it comes to viewing angles and colors the 15in will have the advantage like many of the 14in counterparts have, for ex: HP Elitebook 14in W models vs 15in W model, where in the 15in offers a IPS display.

LoL, I wanted the 14" because of moving up from an XPs 13.
I am trying to find the goldi locks zone.

I went from a 17 to a 13.3 so now I am trying to get in the middle.

I need to consult you folks and help me figure out what to do! My braind hurts from this.

The screen quality is one of my concerns due to the level of photography and video work I do.
The Alienware 14x has been catching flack on having a lame screen.
But the 14x has a quad core processor.

I put the 15z in bold because its Bigger=B=Bold etc.

Hmm. Your kinda in a tossup there. For me, because I am not a really huge gamer, I would prolly go with the 15z. The M14x is a nice lappy though.

The 1920x1080 has a higher resolution, so images would present well.

I would prolly go with the 15z. (But, that is my own opinion). :)

Hey guys I can choose between a m14x and this babe xps 15z, I want to know what do think would be the best choice.

    M14X:
    i7-2630QM :D
    750 gb HDD 7,200 rpm :)
    1.5 nvidia geforce 555m :D
    1600x900 :)
    4gb at 1333mhz :'(

    xps 15z:
    i7 2620M 2.3 ghz :)
    256 SSD :DDDDD
    2gb nvidia geforce 525 :)
    1080P 300 nit
    8gb 1333 mhz

I'm an engineer of business and information technology so I use visual studio, jbuilder, sqlserver and stuff but also I'm a gamer in console and I want to grow up to PC, so I want to game in my new laptop. I'm not a really heavy gamer, but I want a smooth multiplayer in Call of Duty and Bad Company, etc.
Which laptop would be the best for my needs?

PS: XPS 15z catched my attention cuz the SSD is technically free.
    PS: I'm from México

If you want to play games, definitely the Alienware M14x.

As a general purpose computer, the XPS 15z. It has better screen quality, higher resolution (which is actually a detriment when gaming at this size), will be thinner, and will be lighter. But the gaming performance on this machine can't touch what you get out of an Alienware M14x

In my opinion for the near future, Dell wont be able to match the Adamo 13.. in terms of design and form factor of course.

I really wished that they just did a revision and put in low voltage i5 and kept at $999. Apparently the management thinks otherwise.

Glad I got the 5 yr warranty

I've heard the 15z has build quality issues, the only big issue with the M14X is it doesn't game well on battery.
