With my Studio due to be replaced this year I'm watching over this new slim laptop with interest. But somehow I feel that there'll be a catch or several ones that will result in the laptop being a nightmare for a compromise. -
If they offer a 1600x900 14in version I'll get it.

nvidia chip inside?

i'd given up on Envy for my next laptop and this is just the news i needed. looking forward to the announcement
-
I doubt the IPS screen, but I'm 99% sure a full HD screen is available.

Why is it taking so long to announce this thing for real? I remember they wrote about it on a Dell blog in Mars.
-
Doubt IPS.
If you remember even macbook pros had bad panels in them until recently. Even now they aren't IPS except for the Ipad and the 13inch's resolution is low. It's easier for apple to throw a better one in their laptops because they have such a high price point. (1799$ for a base 15 inch).
I continue to wish for good panels throughout the industry too but it's a matter of demand and cost. Looks like the Thinkpad X1 is getting an IPS. The Standard 15inch xps has great reviews on it's screen so I think it's pretty likely the 15z will have the same one as an option. -

NVIDIA driver page outs 3D Vision support for Dell XPS 15z, surprises no one -- Engadget
update on the video card -
Cool, let's keep an eye on this
-
Some more goodies
* GT 525M
* Cypress touchpad
And finally...
-
Wow, i just wish that was in a 14in package.
-
Hope it have R+GB LED FHD screen.... dont know if it still has JBL 2.1 ....
-
Nice specs, this will sell like hotcakes
-
So from that initial info, there's no quad core. Only dual core SB processors.
Good screen. That's nice.
Average GPU. Lol, 2 GB of VRAM is useless.
Potential buy for me. -
I'm still holding out hope that the 540M is an option.
Also, what happened to that info that Dell was pegging this as a sub-$1000 notebook? -
Something that thin with a 1080p screen. Prices posted are freaking good. I can't wait
-
-
If the 525M is the only graphics option, I have lost all interest in this notebook.
-
Is there any info on the weight of this laptop yet?
-
Pretty much would be the best "thin and light" spec wise out there. Especially for the price. -

disappointing -
the xps 15z is going to be so nice if it's eligible for the pc +free xbox promo.

The only way I can imagine purchasing this laptop is if the Envy 14 refresh has a worse GPU. -
Looks like the speculation can end soon. Dell XPS 15z coming tomorrow for $999? -- Engadget

Can't wait.
While I loved having a thin and light 13" at 1080p. If this 15" is really anywhere near the realm of "light" having a 1080p 15" screen is just that much better. Esp for on the go photo editing. Price wise it's more than competitive.
People say the envy but you can't get 1080p on it and while a great looking machine it's not thin. -

Does anyone know if there will be a xps 17z???? Or just this 15"?
-
check out the dell product page. Has all the info on specs and pictures of the system. Missing the description of the 1080p screen but if you look at the for the page it has 1080p in it
-
8.5 hours battery life on the 8 cell. not too shabby -
Very similar in size and shape of a MacBook Pro 15''. I like what I see. However, I bet they included a crap touchpad.

There was a leak of a Dell XPS L511z earlier in the year. Anyone know if that's the same thing?
-
If it is the same HW is a 14in case and a 1600x900 display... I WANT!
-
While I disdain the lack of dedicated Pg/Hm/End keys, I prefer the fact they are using a non 10-key keyboard layout. At first, I liked the 10-key keyboards but since I don't really use it and it puts the main keys and the mouse pad off center to the left, my preference remains with QWERTY only keyboards (although a 17" should have a 10-key).
I hope these are shipping immediately upon announcement. -
-
It looks just like a MacBook Pro.
Except it's usable, because it runs Windows. -
June is edging closer, and that's the month slated for my new laptop purschase. I'm currently undecided between the 13 and 15 inch Macbook Pro's. The XPS 15z is currently the only laptop that's making me hesitant about biting the apple.
Now, I'm just bracing myself for the catch which I suspect will be either of the three listed below:
-Low quality LCD panel
-No discrete GPU option
-Sub-par battery life
Obviously I'm not anticipating super laptop at a reasonable price, so I'm willing to compromise depending on what the laptop offer. But if the LCD panel is as graphic-design unfriendly as the one on my current Dell machine then I'll pass and hand my money to the nearest Apple store. -
Sadly no express card slot for easy DIY vidock.
-
Good to know that this has 1920x1080.
According to Dell, the video card options are:
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 525M 1GB graphics
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 525M 2GB graphics -
I may consider this if the 1080 screen is of high quality, like the XPS 15, we'll know soon enough...
