Is there any info about that free bag and it's availability in europe? my sales rep (finland) said that they have no clue if it's going to be shipped with my m1330. weird.

ArseFly... Reps has no clue. Period. It applies to everything. From the XPS m1330 to politics, mathematics, sport, and the first name of their mother.

Sorry, was easy, but back to the topic, NONE of them saw a XPS 1330. THey all seem to come with a sleeve, you will know when you receive yours.

A few orders were delivered I think. But with this order date, you may have to wait a little bit before entering into production I guess.

I'm in exactly the same situation, I'm going abroad the 15th of August and I need the laptop with Linux installed on it, if it comes the 14th as scheduled, it will be hard... Though I think it won't arrive on time...

Which distribution are you using ? Ubuntu should be quite to install ...
Of course, I'm using Gentoo, so the installation process takes some time !

I'll install Ubuntu (32bit). Perhaps it will be easy, lets see... I didn't take any fancy options such as wireless N or LED display, though I took the fingerprint reader... I've never tried Gentoo how is it?

LED doesn't matter. It will just display what the card sends to it. I don't see it as a problem. Except maybe for brightness adjustement? Except that it's mainly intel stuffs, Nvidia card, piece of cake... And even if Dell is not selling the 1330 with Linux yet, maybe they will in the future, so I'm expecting compatible hardwares.

Dude, chill! 13 is way too young for a heart attack. More likely than not, the removal of 7700 is not the heating issue as they are being offered and sold in Canada and people have already got them. The climate is not that different to create overheating problems in one country and not in another. Although, I don't really know the weather in Self-Delusion-stan where you seem to hail from.

On another note, my laptop has now gone into 'production'. Wonder how long it'll be there for?

Hmm maybe. Why didn't you ask for a UK keyboard because as far as I know all the M1330's for Europe are made in Ireland, where they will naturally have a good supply of UK keyboards.

Must admit I don't know the differences between and German and US keyboard but the differences between a US and UK are minimal.

I love it. I love the level of control I have upon what I install or not. It's also Very Well Documented. And the forums are really helpful. And of course it's a good way to learn a lot about linux.

The downside is : the install itself can be quite long, since everything gets recompiled. And some of the configuration has to be done by hand, there are no graphical wizards and/or autodetection tools.

Bottom-line : if all you want is an OS that just works without you investing some time in it, forget about Gentoo.
If you want some very fine customization, or a really fun learning experience, it's really great.

The German keyboard is total BS, you have the special letters, the "z" is at the place of the "y" and so on... You're right UK and US are quite alike, but yet the @ is not at a the same place... It's really amazing that each country have its own layout!

ok I see, recompiling everything this must be reaaaallllyyy long! While once the install is complete I still have to install Matlab, Mathematica and intel compilers, ubuntu is just fine for me!

That's why getting my laptop on the 13th to go away on the 15th is a bit late. I'm counting a few hours to get the base system installed (yeap, I'm configuring and compiling my kernel by hand). Add a few hours to get X and gnome compiled (configuration only takes a few minutes there).

After that, there's the fun part which I don't know about, with all the power management stuff ( CPU throttling, sleep and hibernate, and all that stuff ).

That's an interesting question ... I made the supposition that it might be standard enough to work like the one on thinkpads. ( http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_enable_the_fingerprint_reader)
And for the remote, I've got absolutely no clue about how it might be working (hardware wired and sends the same event as the keys ? or accessible through the IR events ? ). Actually, has it been confirmed that european orders get a remote too ?

    It's kind of a 3-Tier project:
    1. Basics : HD, DVD, network incl wireless, sound, etc. That will work fine almost out of the box.
    2. Not so basic, but should work just find: Beryl ( 3D desktop ), everything ACPI (CPU throttling, disk management, and sleep/hibernate), multimedia keys (might be really easy, or a PITA)
    3. Extras : fingerprint reader, remote

Regarding ACPI, I hope I'll achieve better battery life than with XP.

All this should be quite fun if you like this sort of stuff.

Edit: did I mention I'm going the 64 bits way ?

There are no info at all about the fingerprint reader... I asked for the remote and I was told it was included in all orders :)

Regarding battery life I'm pretty sure it will be longer on Linux than Vista (if you don't use Beryl though).

64bit is really not funny! All the library have to be in both versions -> probability of missing libraries very high! I don't how is it now but flash didn't work, really a PITA! You're quite courageous! What are the real advantages BTW?

Actually my desktop is 64bit, and it works quite fine.
The only problems I've got are the flash and java plugins. For this, I've got a 32 bit version of Firefox ( it was one single command to get it installed on gentoo).

And the advantages ? Well, 64 bits is the way of the future of course ! And ... just a minute ... let me think about it ...
Well in theory, performance might be better, but not by much. And if you've got 4GB of memory, 64 bits is the way to go (I only need 2GB anyway).

Edit: I'm only using Linux. I've never tried 64bits Vista, and the first thing I'll do when I received my laptop will be to remove Vista.

I had 64bit Vista and I did not like having two Program Files directories. It just annoyed the hell out of me. Not sure why, but it just felt like even more clutter on the drive.

Also, Adobe CS3 had problems. Not sure if it was due to 64bit or Vista.

As far as I know there are no performance difference between 32bit or 64bit, the only advantage is that you can have 2^64 bit of RAM, which is basically infinite!

jtromans, to go to the beach (Arcachon, very nice place, and some of the best ice creams I've ever had), I really only need the basics. I'm doing some photography as a hobby, and I use the laptop to unload the picts from the camera, check them, and some basic post-processing.
So anything beyond a simple linux desktop + Gimp is just optional. And I can always use a Knoppix Live CD as a fallback. So dual-booting would be more trouble than it's worth to me.

The real problem here is not getting the laptop early enough to install linux, it's more like getting the laptop early enough to catch my train :(
    EDD 08/13, train departure 08/15
I do have an old Inspiron 8200 I could use, but:
    - I was planning to give it away
    - It's a freaking anvil, not the kind of stuff you want to carry in your luggage.

:notworthy: There are some really really nice people on these forums all with such a great sense of humour!! It's certainly helped pass the time waiting for our toys.

In answer to your question, the beach was great, despite being stung by a wasp!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even hotter here in the UK today which is making up for one of the wettest summers ever.

I actually have another Samsung 64 GB SSD which I may switch in place in of the 32GB one it ships with.

I will probably be running Ubuntu but if not, I will be running XP which uses less space than Vista... (not a huge amount though)!

Hope they offer me some free things or a discount. If not i'm going to cancel the machine. More then 2 months is ridiculous, my brand new Mini Cooper is earlier then the Dell.

Welcome onboard Amokjeeh. That was quite expected, most of us had the same change. You won't have a call as it's probably just an automatic email from their planning system. Maybe your rep has it too, but I don't think so. Tell us if he offers you something though.
