Hey forum members. I thought I would just start a thread about the Dell Mini Inspiron UMPC in hopes that anyone who finds some new info on it would post it because I (like others on this forum I think) are becoming ancy (sp?) about this notebook and I figured that this would be a good thread to keep everyone up to date.
Here is a link to some of what has been discussed about it thus far:

Hope to hear from everyone else who is anxious for this to be released!

I know. I am actually excited as well. I would like to see what Dell releases, as it will round out the possible candidates for my purchase later this summer. I plan on ordering late august/ early September, so by then hopefully everything will be out. The eee looked so great, but it seems the acer and msi, and possibly dell have taken it. I understand their 1000 series, but at that price, I would just save up and get a sony t series. The t series is awful nice, and I hope I do not have to save for one, but if these little guys don't pull through, here I come. I think dell can take the cake by being competitively priced, but allowing the consumer to customize the entire notebook. For me, this is most important as I personally do not want bluetooth, but certainly wireless n, I would prefer paying extra for a ssd, but I do not care about a webcam, little things that would be nice to customize. I am not a huge dell fan, but this may turn around some of my thoughts. my 2 cents...

Yeah, I have had mixed dealing with Dell but overall they have been good, especially with their tech support. Let's hope this "mini inspiron" or whatever they end up calling it is as great as it looks to be.

Nobody else is in anticipation of this notebook and wants to express it?? If that's the case I guess this thread is over.
-
Never, keep it alive. If anything new comes up, post it up. If not, we can just chat, haha!

LOL! Deal. I like your way of thinking... >.<
-
I can't wait for the mini inspiron to come out!!!! I want it in red, of course!!!
:yes:
So, I will be adding to the thread ~ no worries -

Thanks. I'm not sure what color I would get mine in (I am usually one who likes a matte look and I've never owned a glossy finished notebook). So I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Although I must admit the red color does look nice. -
Your choice of a matte look is good, but the glossy will be nice, also!!
Tis a *wait and see* for sure!!!! -
I'm excited about the Mini Inspiron coming out. It looks the nicest of all of the ultra portables out so far.
-
i plan to buy it with my summer internship money. . . even though i got a m1530 in march.. but i take the bus/train interstate often so itd be nice to have something i can just play emulators or word process on
-
shoelace_510 8700M GT inside... ^-^;
Yeah I plan to use mine as a note taking/ bring to the library comp for school.
-
Same. My 17" beast is way to big for the usual school tasks, thus a small guy is perfect. I think that I would get the same, red, but to be truthful, I care more about how Dell separates them self from the competition, and thus how it will benefit the consumer, us. I hope that it will kick a$$. Glad to see we have drummed up some subscribers.
-
-
This will be my literal *take along* as I can just place in my handbag, tote, being so *ultra-portable*
I am positive that I will have this with me on a daily basis (at work, etc)! :yes: -
shoelace_510 8700M GT inside... ^-^;
Yeah I love having a desktop replacement notebook but at the same time I really don't like toting it everywhere cause I fear for it's safety. XD Call me crazy lol.
So yeah, having an ultra portable that I can bring along in my backpack everywhere will be nice.
Let's hope though that Dell doesn't pull an Acer and give it a mere 3 cell battery!
And yeah, now we have some subscribers. ^^ w00t. -
Nah, won't call you crazy!!! LOL
I would hope that the battery would be as decent as the *mini* looks, it has to be!!!...staying positive (that's really the only way)
And GOThis thread...Woot!Woot! :yes: -

Btw... I was looking at the MSI Wind specs (it comes out this week I think) and I am wondering if Dell won't follow closely spec-wise their configuration. At least we can only hope that they'll go the 2.5" HD route...

Here's a quick link for those who don't want to go searching:
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/msi-wind.aspx?mode=specs -
I'm more concerned about the price point of this machine.
Lets hope it won't be as overpriced as the EEEpc, and that the saturation of market with Acer and MSI umpcs will drive prices down. -
It really isn't as overpriced as it is. I mean, you are getting a much smaller form factor. Its like desktops for example, they are so much bigger yet laptops are typically more expensive. Just because the Eee is small, there is some effort needed in cramming everything into the small casing it has. I do honestly think that with all the competing designs that companies are coming out with including Dell's mini, no one is going to really be able to get a good chunk of the marketshare.

Here is a little bit of an update for everyone:
http://gizmodo.com/tag/inspiron-mini/
This tells that the mini inspiron will probably not be the official name, that the notebook is slated to come out later this Summer (as it should lol) and that the keyboard that is in the photos you have seen will NOT be the one in the final version. -
They are toying with us. I really cannot wait until it is official or the final specs are released.
-
Later this summer...How about by July 1, 2008?? :yes: ?? That, works for me!! LOL.kidding.maybe.
I would love to see those final specs -
I agree, at least some specs and prices, no pictures needed. I gotta order by September 1 so it would be nice to plan it out. Gar, waiting continues on...

So today I found that PC Mag thinks that it seems as though the mini inspiron may have a launch at next week's Computex.
I'm not sure if it's true or not but it would be a great surprise to everyone and pretty great timing too considering that the Wind is coming out next Monday (sorry for the wrong date before lol)...

Also, do you guys think that BestBuy will get this computer anytime soon after it comes out?? I have a significant gift card there and that would be really nice if they did have it so that I could use that up...
But then again I need it before school this fall so who knows if they'll get it by then (if ever), especially considering the only UMPC that they carry now is the originaly 7" Eee Pc. lol -

Today I found that slashgear.com claimed that the mini inspiron would have 3 usb ports and a card reader. I couldn't find where they got their sources, but it would be a step in the right direction if they are right...
-
The first article Gizmodo said it would have three USB ports and a card reader. It's definitely a welcome move by Dell. Heck even the Macbook only has two USB ports but no card reader.
-
Good to see this thread *bumped*
And, thanks for the latest and greatest info

Is there a price rumored yet? Specs?! -
shoelace_510 8700M GT inside... ^-^;
No prices yet. The only rumored specs are 8.9" screen, 3 USB ports, and a card reader...
-
-
I gotta have it! -
I'm going to get the 8.9" in red with 1gb ram and the 8gb hard drive and pop in a 8gb sd card...unless the 16gb is pretty cheap.

Holy Shnizzle. I might buy one...that is awesome!!!!!

shoelace_510 8700M GT inside... ^-^;
OMG!! Thanks for the link. I am definitely going with the E when it comes out. $299?? That's unbelievable.
I think having the Slim option coming down the road is interesting too... hm...I think a cheaper slim notebook could take on the Air and VoodooPC's 13.3" offering nicely.
I just hope that they have enough space in them! That's my main concern with these Flash based UMPCs is that they don't have enough room for what I want on them. >.< -
shoelace_510 8700M GT inside... ^-^;
16 GB HD is my only concern... I guess we'll see how it all plays out. XD
Nice to see that it has the Diamonville in it though, and 1 GB RAM option.
Wonder what the GPU is, and what the prices will be for the XP and Linux versions...
After a little contemplation I think that a 4 cell battery in a UMPC like this is just right. 3 Cells like in the Acer Aspire One seems a little bit small, but 6 Cells like in the expensive version of the MSI Wind seems a little excessive (mainly because of size considering that the battery must protrude out of the case like a 9 cell does on a normal 15.4").
I'm overly excited about this now. lol Sorry for the ranting!! -

A 16gb SSD for only $300 is a GREAT deal...add a 16gb SD card to that, and you are set!
-
shoelace_510 8700M GT inside... ^-^;
BUT, I think that $299 is just the base configuration (which as of yet we don't know), so I'm not sure what the best configuration will be price wise... -
shoelace_510 8700M GT inside... ^-^;
Speaking of which, here is a pretty great deal on a nice 16 GB SD:

That is a nice price. I would def. shop around for one if I was gonna get one though. If this came out before July I would be more interested...it will be interesting to see how it stacks up against the Wind and EEE.

My bad btw... Here is the page with the config. options:

I'd love a small portable to carry around and do a little C++ coding on. I was going to go for an Asus Eee 901 but the Dell offer seems quite good. It will be interesting to see how the price translates to the UK. With the Asus machine going on sale for around £305, it could be the defining factor in my decision to buy Asus VS Dell.
