Bharat, I became more of configuration guy while trying to play GTA4 on my notebook, as it is very badly ported to PC. I played it with all low graphics settings and resolution to lowest to fight to get fps @ 25-30 on my notebook. And somehow managed to complete. You can just look at some previous posts in this thread for details.

IMPORTANT:. Please don’t think it as a complete reference. This post is a collection of games that I have played or going to play on my notebook with some of my hard work to make the mark >>>30 FPS<<< on my notebook.

I am not really a gaming mad. But I am always keen for what are the latest releases ( played the beta for Medal of Honor :) ) for PC and I can play on my notebook. I know its kind of fight to run games at great setting on notebook. But what’s bad in giving a try....

I started with some nice games. But my journey is having quite high and low time while trying to run the games. Below is the series in which i played the games on my notebook:

    • Race Driver : GRID
    • DIRT 2
    • GTA 4
    • Dark Sector
    • Mass Effect 2
    • Quake Live
    • Split/Second
    • Just Cause 2
    • Medal Of Honor
    • Call of Duty : Black ops
    • NFS World
    • League of Legends

Before we jump start to the 30 FPS mark let me introduce you to

My Divine Guide to gaming @ notebook.

    1. System scanned by spy-bot search and destroy and MSE.

    2. Defag the HDD (primarily primary drive and Game folders).

    3. Uninstall all video driver in normal mode.

    4. Uninstall all video driver in safe mode by Driver sweeper.

    5. Cleaning all ATI registry through Cc-cleaner.

    6. Manual search for any left over in registry and cleaning(run -> regedit)

    7. Download latest driver from ATI site directly.

    8. Install them and restart notebook.

    9. Keep you Steam account or Windows live updated.

    10. New life for gaming.

Check out My new updated divine guide to gaming @ notebook.

Note : If you don’t mention any setting it means you are using it as default graphics settings. If you have changed something please mention. Also make sure we are using ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470. Let me start with my first game on my notebook.

    Race Driver : GRID

Game is really nice to play, great graphics and controls and works fine on my notebook :D . First I simply installed the game and started playing without any changes to graphics setting and monitored the fps in Fraps.

    Video Mode used: 1920 x 1080 (60 Hz)

    Results :

    1. All default settings : 14-16 FPS

    2. Particles - Medium : 15-22 FPS
    Crowd - off
    Motion Blur - off
    Multisampling - off

    3. Particles - Medium : 15-19 FPS
    Crowd - off
    Motion Blur - on
    Damage level - Low
    Trees - Low
    Multisampling - off

    4. Shadows - Medium : 17-19 FPS
    Particles - off
    Multisampling - off

    5. Multisampling - off : 24-33 FPS
    Shadows - off

    6. Crowd - on : 27-33 FPS
    Trees - on
    Motion blur - on
    Particles - off
    Reflection - Low
    Multisampling - off

    7. Particles - off : 30-40 FPS
    Crowd - off
    Motion Blur - off
    Damage level - Low
    Trees - Low
    Reflection - Low
    Shadows - Low
    Multisampling - off

Finally we have succeeded. Please feel free to add your 30 FPS stories with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470. Stay tuned for next game. :)

Thank you, I for one am enlightened about the process involved. but to a consumer, we want more regardless of the process.

I play SC2 on Med-High settings at 720p. I mostly play on high settings for 1v1 and 2v2. For longer 3v3 and 4v4, I used Med settings. However, I rarely experience hiccups on my machine.

    My Specs:
    Core i3 380M (2.53 ghz)
    6gb DDR3
    Ati 5470 1gb DDR3
    Hitachi 320gb (7,200 rpm)

By the way, I love this thread. All I ever read is how bad the 5470 is. Everyone hates on this GPU. For my purposes, gaming on the go and cheaply at that, it works great and runs cool.

Hi, I have this laptop, but I have a problem.
I have tried running loads of games on Steam, like HL2, Left 4 Dead 2 and Just Cause 2. They all start out really smoothly, but after about 15-30 mins the frame rate starts to drop drastically. Anyone got any ideas?

How are u using ur laptop while playing? try placing on a flat surface.. try to elevate the back if u can n try to point a fan at it...

U can use throttlestop to check it ur processor has indeed throttled and u can undo it but thats a temporary solution and it'll probably recur soon

I'm using it with the laptop on my lap. I tried using Throttlestop, but as you said, it's a temporary solution. Could anyone recommend a laptop cooler they use with this laptop? Preferebly something so I can still use it on my lap

Cooler or a 9 cell battery will also lift the laptop for air vent, as your choice.

Thanks Sidhu88, Trillen for your input for Need for speed hot pursuit and SC2. Will definitely be adding the mark to the upcoming The mark >>>30 FPS<<< on my notebook. Now Lets get it started with the game Dirt 2.

    DIRT 2

Again a really nice game to play, great graphics. This time I am using two resolution just to also see the graphics. Monitored the fps in Fraps.

    Video Mode used: 1920 x 1080 (60 Hz), 1024 X 768 (60 Hz)

    Results :

    1920 x 1080 (60 Hz)

    1. All low default settings : 23-29 FPS ( playable to some extent)
Even the above is looking fine but thought to see some graphics now so lowered the resolution and moved some settings.

    1024 X 768 (60 Hz)

    1. Particles - Medium : 22-28 FPS
    Crowd - Low
    Ground Cover - Low
    Driver - Low
    Post processing - Medium
    Vehicle reflection - Ultra

    2. Particles - Medium : 28-37 FPS
    Crowd - Low
    Ground Cover - Low
    Driver - Low
    Post processing - Medium
    Vehicle reflection - Low

    3. Particles - Medium : 30+ FPS
    Crowd - Low
    Ground Cover - Low
    Driver - Low
    Post processing - Low
    Vehicle reflection - Low

Tried some more settings but totally on you which you want and which setting not. But for the time 30+ is great. Moreover one good thing while changing graphics is you can see the fps directly in the game menu.

Now some updates for the next game in line. GTA4 was a real hell run on my machine and I really struggled a lot to make it just play (20-22 fps). Will be sharing the experience and mark soon. Gaming Rocks !!!

    The mark >>>30 FPS<<< on my notebook @ 1920 x 1080 (60 Hz), 1024 X 768 (60 Hz) is the key.

    @ 640x480 , a car will be looking like a truck :D

I don't have that great of a solution for a cooler for your lap but I currently use the Massive 23CS Thermaltake Cooler 23cm fan with LED lights ^^

And discussion wise, I've been able to play l4d2 and team fortress 2 with high detail and good frame rate on my ati 5470, don't know exact frame rate though, definately over 30.

And on a side note, I don't know if processor power helps put less stress on the GPU or not but i've been able to play l4d2 and team fortress 2 with good frame rate at 1680 x 1050 res 22in monitor. But my specs are:
    i7 720qm
    ati 5470
    720p res screen
    9 cell battery

comp puts out lots of heat but no more than 75 degs C from processor and 80 degs C on gpu

reallly interested on if i can play med graphics on cod black ops if anybody can tell me?

If anyone reads this thread because they are looking at picking up a Dell with dedicated graphics..

at the outlet store lots of systems have an ATI HD 550v. This is a much better card for gaming than the 5470. It is the best low cost gaming option. It doesn't seem to be as well known as other options but I have one in a lowly Dell 15r with an AMD cpu and it plays games like Crysis and Dirt 2 extremely well.

At notebookcheck.net the HD 550v is in the middle of the 2nd tier cards, the 5470 is a tier 3 card.

As mentioned in my last post GTA4 really was a hell play for me. I somehow unwillingly completed the game and tried whole lot of configuration to end the game. The story goes like this.

    ==========================================
    ==========================================

    grand theft auto 4

Ok so let me start with a crash. I installed the game it installed perfectly also asked to create a social club account. That is also ok. But when I clicked on play button the rockstar logo came and the game crashed and hence the saga to make the game playable on the notebook started.

So I went to the link Rockstar Games - Help - Grand Theft Auto IV Patch 7 -- Title Update v. 1.0.7.0 (English) / 1.0.6.1 (Russian) / 1.0.5.2 (Japanese) , downloaded the 100 MB patch and installed it. I have already heard some bad news about the game but the series was my all time favourite, so I thought to give it a try at least. But all in vain.

After the patch the social club was gone and we can run the game directly as per below popup.

The popup even came to remove all the features as below:

I clicked ok and thought now let me see the GTA 4 world. So I instantly clicked on the game icon on the desktop to play the game. But again bad luck, nothing happened. So I directly went to the game folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV and clicked the LaunchGTAIV.exe to play the game.

As the game was starting I got that it won't be running nice on my machine. And to surprise the social club that was already delete asked me to login.

This completely made no sense for me that why I installed the patch. But as the rule to reach >>>30 FPS<<<. So now the work started to make The mark >>>30 FPS<<< on my notebook.

    Video Mode used: 1920 x 1080 (60 Hz), 1024 X 768 (60 Hz), 800 x 600 (60 Hz)

    Results :

    1920 x 1080 (60 Hz)

    1. All default settings : 11-13 FPS ( almost dead play)

    2. All low default settings : and again it crashed.

And I simply headed to GTAForums.com -> GTA IV for some quick fix.

Has anyone tried Assassin's Creed 2 on the 5470?
I'm planning to get my cousin a midline laptop with the 5470 and all he really wants to do is play those games. I think 30 FPS on med-low should be okay for him. So one of you gamers (do you have this game qmrneo?), please figure out the FPS for med-low graphics!

    Specs: (HP laptop)
    Intel Core i3 380M (2.53 GHz)
    512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 (DDR3)
    4GB RAM

Assassin's Creed 2 on the 5470 may not be running smooth with 30 FPS ( tried some bench and failed) . Also I suggest to go for more high range card if you are a gaming soul.

    I have the 4570 n I played AC-2 at 1280x720 with low-medium settings n i used to get 20-30 fps..

Edit: if ur getting him a new laptop i'd suggest trying to get one with an ati 5650 or an (Nvidia equivalent) they'll be good for AC-2

that's true sidhu that 4570 is quite a nice performing card as compared to 5470. So going higher will make the new buy worth for coming titles instead of backtrack :)

Unfortunately for me, the only relatively cheap laptop I could find, has a 5470. Only the high-end laptops support a 5650 (Envy 14, etc.). Thanks for the help sidhu and qmrneo!

P.S. If you can find a ~$600 laptop with a 5650, please post it! Any help will be appreciated!

zEquilibrium, If u r going for a cheap yet playable card then 5470 is fine. But me to having the same rig cannot expect much with upcoming games ( need to lower the res and settings as usual). As you can see with some of my >>>30 FPS<<< work in earlier posts in this thread.

sidhu, I have tried AC2 on my machine and it was hell slow. And I also ran some yougamers bench and 5470 was not able to make it. But I saw some of my friends playing it fine on 4570...which I envy :)

Finally I have made GTA 4 work fine on my machine once again :D, a divine time for a gamer to be able to run a game on laptop. So let me share some of my steps which will help you too. These steps are for GTA 4 only but you can use them in any game if that is making u  and playing with you. :(

    1. Uninstall the video driver completely from your machine. You may use checkpoint as here.

    2. Download the latest driver from AMD.com | Support & Downloads.

    3. And install them. Below are the display adapter properties after the install.

    4. The game shortcut was not working for me so I directly launched from RGSCLauncher.exe ( C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\RGSC ) instead of LaunchGTAIV.exe

    5. The game started but very low fps as running default config ( 1920 x 1080 (60 Hz), almost all high settings). 4 - 12 FPS. I will call it "dead slow-mo".

    6. So I tweaked some settings as below :

But still the lag was coming.

    7. Now the time of surprise and more work came up. I just clicked the update driver buttun and the driver went back to year 2009. :)

But the lag became more "dead slow-mo" and I thought to hit it back hard. And I reverted back to latest driver that I freshly installed i.e 5400 series.

    8. Hitting back to Rock star support site GTAForums.com -> How to use -memrestrict to fix stuttering found the use of commandline.txt and -
memrestrict commands and placed commandline.txt in game folder location ( C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV ).

The settings they mentioned are as below:

-memrestrict 188743680 LOW TEXTURES (256M Video Cards)
    -memrestrict 209715200
    -memrestrict 230686720
-memrestrict 262144000 MED TEXTURES (512M Video Cards)
    -memrestrict 293601280
    -memrestrict 314572800
-memrestrict 629145600 HIGH TEXTURES (1Gig+ Video Cards)
    -memrestrict 650117120
    -memrestrict 681574400

and -memrestrict 629145600 worked from me well.

    9. And the game is now running fine from 22-32 FPS depending upon climate condition but smooth.

    10. Hope it helps. Enjoy Niko !

Note: I found that latest ATI driver 11-2_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl are working fine for the game but crashing the browser. So play the game with this driver and update them to older version 2009 ( which I guess are actual 5470 driver.) for stability once game is finished.

It turns out that I found a laptop with the 5650 and it was only $550 (major newegg sale). Normally the thing is 800. I already ordered it and my cousin will be so happy. The name is HP dv6-3143us. Thanks for your advice qmrneo!

Hi all, the next game in the stack for the The mark >>>30 FPS<<< on my notebook is Dark Sector. I am not sure how many of you have heard of it. But this game definitely liked by me on its first trailer itself and I bought one. The game is like the :mask: Thief series by Eidos. The game is not as such very high end graphics savvy  , but really good in feel and play.

    ==========================================

    ==========================================

    Dark Sector

Before we head to the mark some details about the game.

    Game site : Dark Sector
    Developer : Digital Extremes
    Game type : 3rd-person action-shooter.
Story : Dark Sector thrusts players into the role of Hayden Tenno, a covert operative sent on a dangerous mission into Lasria – an Eastern European city on the brink of ruin that hides a deadly Cold War secret. In the midst of this mission, Hayden is attacked by an unknown enemy and infected by the Technocyte Virus - a brutal bio-weapon that twists it’s victims into mindless killing machines. Surviving this attack, Hayden finds that the Technocyte virus has granted him powerful, inhuman abilities unlike anything he has ever seen. Now, he must evolve with his powers, survive and become a hero.

Install : It will force you to install the 8.04.25 version of Nvidia Phyx. Even if you have the latest installed.
Driver version : 8.680.0.0 ( which are latest when we update, dont know in what sense as on ATI support site the latest are as 5400 series. Which are more nice for GTA4 as have less lag.)
    Video Mode used : 1920 x 1080 (60 Hz), 1280 X 1024 (60 Hz)

    Results :

    1920 x 1080 (60 Hz)
    1. All default settings : 15-24 FPS ( playable). Even the settings are fine. Just to get some more fps lowered the resolution.

    1280 X 1024 (60 Hz)
    2. All graphics settings are previous, only lowered the resolution to 1280 X 1024. Which is new in our mark series as always we have to lower the resolution to 1024 X 768 to get the 30 FPS. At this settings we got a nice FPS between 25-35 and we succeeded in 30 FPS mark.

Next in the episode is Mass Effect 2. Stay tuned...

if you was on a 600-700 budget what would you recommend? I have been searching for ever and just cant find a i5 with a descent gpu. I used to into gaming, but I am replacing my desktop so i dont need anything top of the line. As long as i can play BF3 in the fall on med settings i would be somewhat happy. I thought about the 17R and thats what lead me here to these forums. But with my budget i might be asking to much..

If going for a top line desktop replacement by laptop then definitely the budget will go up. Is thr any brand preference you are looking for. If you are going for Dell then definitely i5 with nice gpu will cost more. XPS 15 or you can go for 15R for a budget.

Well the brand dont matter, as long as its reliable. It seems like 17R's are going a cheaper rate on the outlet site. So i was doing a search on the card and it brought me here. I just want a decent light gaming laptop.

I defiantly want a i5 but i unsure want card i need to look for?

I think a minimum would be a 5650 Mobility. The 5470 might be able to play it but on lower resolutions/quality. I think Dell rebranded it has the 550v.

I will not suggest to go for 5470, it will lead to bottleneck for coming titles. The card mentioned in XPS 15 is good then 15R and hence the cost. But 15R can play the game BF3.

If you don't mind refurbished units, you can pick up an ASUS G series laptop and that will tackle games easily. 260M easily beats any card in the XPS or 15R by a longshot.
