I've been wanting to wait till next year to get a Sager/Clevo gaming laptop however, I don't really game much (maybe because my Studio 1535 has a weak card). I don't know if I'll be able to afford dropping $1500+ on a laptop next year. My laptop is slowly falling apart. It is a ATI HD 3450 in it. I've tried to play BF Bad Company 2 on lowest settings but it gets on average 12fps. I play StarCraft II on low settings at my full monitor res of 1440x900 and get 60fps in the early game and 30fps or less during battles. Other games like Rainbow Six Vegas 2 have to run at cell phone resolutions to be smooth and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory works maxed out on Shader Model 2.0 but lags on Model 3.0. Battlefield 2 works pretty good. Haven't found a preffered settings but it seems at medium settings I can get anywhere from 30-80fps.

How is the HD 5470 for the games I've mentioned above? My college is selling a Studio 1558 for $550 and it comes with a Core i3 (I believe 2.2GHz clock), 4GB RAM, and the 5470. My current Studio 1535 runs Core 2 Duo at 2.1GHz, 4GB RAM, and the 3450. The only major change I'd have to do is to upgrade the Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Proffesional. The resolution on it is 1366x768 (so even less than my current laptop which is 1440x900). I'm not sure of the speed of the HDD in it. It may be on 5400rpm like my current laptop but a 7200rpm upgrade is but $50.

Would this be a viable option or should I wait it out since I don't game too much? I do get annoyed though that the games I do play, have trouble at times. I'd like SC2 to be smoother and if I could get Bad Company 2 to be a playable fps that would be great.

IMPORTANT:. Please don’t think it as a complete reference. This post is a collection of games that I have played or going to play on my notebook with some of my work to make the mark >>>30 FPS<<< on my Studio 1558 @ HD 5470 laptop.

As being often said, it is difficult to play games at good frame rates on the mediocure gpu in the laptop. So I thought to give a try to break the notion and get some stable 30 FPS. In the same context i am continuing the effort. Also it's been a long time i have not posted any mark >>>30 FPS<<< on my notebook. Definitely it been tough to dedicate the time apart from the enterprise development work. But as we are into stable state, i took some time to share the 30 FPS mark of the game which i am getting addicted too, The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim. I am not fan to mmorpg kind. Nor like to sit long hours and days to explore the in game world but Skyrim's beauty, music and nonlinear gameplay is amazing.

So will be sharing my left over game list FPS mark in the upcoming posts.

Race Driver : GRID > Completed
    DIRT 2 > Completed
    GTA 4 > Completed
    Dark Sector > Completed

    Mass Effect 2 >
    Quake Live
    Split/Second
    Just Cause 2
    Medal Of Honor
Call of Duty : Black ops
    NFS World
    League of Legends
The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim > Completed

And let begin with Skyrim. The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim is the fifth installment in The Elder Scrolls action role-playing video game series developed by Bethesda Game Studios. It has already received universal acclaim. The game is CPU as well as GPU intensive but really mind blowing in feel and play. Now let's have quick details.

    The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim

Game site : The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim
    Developer : Bethesda Game Studios
Game type : RPG (nonlinear open world gameplay).
Released on : Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Story : Skyrim's main story revolves around the player(Dragonborn) character's efforts to defeat Alduin, the firstborn of Tamriel's primary deity Akatosh. Alduin is prophesied to destroy the world. Set two hundred years after Oblivion, the game takes place in the land of Skyrim, which is in the midst of a civil war after the assassination of the High King.

    Video Driver version : 8.911.0.0
    Video Mode tested : 1920 x 1080 (60 Hz, 16:9 ratio) ,1600x900, 1280x720

    Results :

    1. 1920 x 1080 (60 Hz) ( Just clicked 'Default' from Skyrim options and it detected High)

The in game FPS struggled from 8-13. Which are dead low to play properly. And the tweak started.
    Radial Blur Quality : Low
    Antialiasing : Off
    Anisotropic Filtering : Off
    Texture Quality : Low
FPS range : 15-22. Still something more can be done.

    2. 1600x900
    Texture Quality :high
    Rest settings as above
    FPS range : 20- 26.

    3. 1280x720
I tried some settings as below: -

    But FPS range : 26-34.
Which was not stable. And some more tweaks needed....
    Shader details : Low
FPS range : 30+ continuous fps

Of course this resolution may not suit many, but it is decent enough frames at high texture.

The HD 5470 is a entry-level / lower middle class DirectX 11 graphics card which is more than a year old. So definitely coming titles (if you think to play) may need more tweaks to give playable fps. So waiting and then going for a gaming laptop will be a good option.

Even I am able to play the games on my HD 5470 at satisfactory level but i cannot expect much from it in coming years.

    :)

Today, sharing the NFS Run limited edition. First it is a big 15.9 GB file size on disk. Second it install a application, Origin which seems to be like EA initiative to match Steam.
When i tried to install the game, it took straight 45 min to install on 4 GB RAM laptop. Which was really boring. But finally it installed without any error and unlocked limited edition cars :).

The game is CPU as well as GPU intensive, seems to me like Burnout paradise and mafia II. Now let's have quick details for this NFS installment.

Need for Speed: The Run Limited Edition

    Game site : NFS Run
    Developer : Black Box Games
Game type : Racing (18th title in the Need for Speed franchise).
    Powered by : DICE's Frostbite 2 engine
Released on : PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, iPhone, iPad, Nintendo 3DS.
Story : Run for your life, enjoy exotic cars and girls.....

    Video Driver version : 8.911.0.0
    Video Mode tested : 1920 x 1080 (60 Hz, 16:9 ratio) ,1600x900, 1280x720, 1024x768, 1024x600, 800x 600

    Results :

    1. 1920 x 1080 (60 Hz) ( The default settings selected by game)

    FPS range : 6.
Lowered all settings but not much of FPS gain. So bought resolution down.

    2. 1600x900
    All settings : Low
    FPS range : 13-15.

    3. 1280x720
    All settings : Low
    FPS range : 18-20.

    4. 1024x768
    All settings : Low
    FPS range : 21-23. Playable a bit.

    5. 1024x600
Although I can clearly see what the GPU is upto, but still want the game to Run on my laptop.
FPS range : 21-27. Playable at ease.
Which I think all the HD 5470 can do at some acceptable settings.

    6. 800x600
    All settings : Low
But FPS range : 28-31 continuous fps. This resolution reminded me of old days. :(

I guess 1024x600 is the final bet on the GPU at 23+ FPS. To expect much will now be unfair.

Let me know if anyone tweaked it more. Thanks.
