The majority of this thread was talking about whether or not the geforce 8600m GT in the 1520 is DDR2 or GDDR3. Sadly, it turns out that it is DDR2 clocked at 475/400 mhz. But honestly, its not that big of a deal, its just the fact that Dell mis represented us on their website.

I read the whole thread. This is not false advertisement but rather called Bait and Switch. They lure you in with a nice apple and give u a rotten one. How did you get a $100 refund? Would you please give us details? I am interested in getting some money back or some kind of compensation.

Ok well i ran some system scans.

I dont know how to use Riviatuner so im not going to bother with that.

    3d mark score: 28** pts. :/

Im gonna try and run GRAW2 and see how that plays.

    No remote. sorry.

Btw a few intresting features i noticed: 1) the speakers are on the BOTOM of the laptop!

    theres no firewire port.

Just to confirm, an 8600 GT will make so much of a difference over my current mobile gpu (x300) that it really won't matter whether or not it's DDR2 or 3, right?

I can configure a 2.0ghz, 1680x1050, 8600 gt, 2gb ram, wireless n, bluetooth, 9 cell battery, audigy sound (is this worth the $25?) and 3 years accidental coverage for $1450 (thank you work discount). Good deal?

So, how do I get the remote? The review showed a remote, and they didn't have the option get one in. Also, wtf is with the speakers on bottom.

    i just read it.

i noticed that there is a buldge sticking out of the back of your inspiron. Is that the 9-cell battery right? I dont like how its stickin out in the back. Do you think if i get a 6-cell i wont see the thing sticking out in the back?

That bulge is because of the 9-cell battery. If you don't like it how it looks, you can always get the 6-cell

Correct, the 9-cell does stick out a bit, the 6-cell is flush.

I'd ditch the audigy software upgrade, the hardware is completely identical and if you really want higher quality sound, get a separate sound adapter.

The 8600M GT, regardless of the memory speed, will absolutely blow away the X300 you're used to. You won't be disappointed if that's what you're comparing it to. :)

Excellent! Then ill just get a 6-cell. Do you think a fully loaded 1520, with 2.2Ghz, 2gb, 8600gt will last for at least 2 hours on, lets say, a decent load with the 6-cell?

I'm assuming decent load like web browsing, editing docs and such? If so then a 6-cell might last close to a couple of hrs, but i'm not sure entirely sure about it since i don't own a 1520.

screen looks dim, im beginning to fear 200nits on the 1680, yet it might just be the angle he shot it at. Is your brightness on full? Because someone else who is on this forum posted pics from the dell kiosk and the screens looked brighter, maybe because it was the bright 250nit screen of the 1440?

This was a pretty funny thread actually :)

I've got to say yea its pretty unfair and you guys could probably sue Dell and make a lot if you wanted to...haha.

Anyways yea it would have been much better to have GDDR3 as the card is already very memory bus limited and it will translate into lower gaming performance.

But will it be noticeably lower? No, you don't need listen to those "end of the world" comments because your just fine with ANY 8600GT.

    UPDATE:

AOE 3 runs on full settings without a hitch.

Glad you guys are enjoying it! I didn't even realize it was up yet since it isn't on the main page.

About screen brightness--yes, I think it is quite bright enough. The pictures were taken in front of a west-facing window at about 8AM so they are all a little dim.

No, I believe the ExpressCard remote that some of the preview laptops came with are actually IR remotes, not BlueTooth like the one you linked to.

Plus $50+ for a little remote is bloody price gouging...

There's a little piece under the play/pause media button that looks like it might be an infrared sensor for the remote. This is just idle speculation, though!

OK, I'm satisfied. Still the best deal I could get and still a whole lot better than what I've got now. And I'll probably never know the difference.

QFT. Really, it ought to be more than satisfactory as is. Quit worrying about getting absolutely everything for uber-cheap, and quit canceling orders. It'll be plenty of fun when it does arrive, and if you keep canceling you'll be stuck on your current technology forever.

Now for finding the review it appears Stella posted...

Apollo 13, since you appear to be the only one with the new inspirons, could you check to see how many bit color depth is your panel. Your 1520 manual states on page 185 that your screen is 262K color, which is 18bits, vs 1.6million colors or 24bit on the older Inspiron line.

I'm not really sure how to check on this, I think youcould try using Powerstrip to get the info on your panel. FYI just in case you didn't know, you cannot see the bit depth of your panel by reading the setting on your OS e.g. 16bit or 32bit. That only implies what the OS can drive, not what your panel can display. Thanks if you care to investigate. My thread on it is here:
