That's great to see that a few of you have finally had your issues resolved. It's just a pity it takes so much effort and time. :)

First laptop (1520) came with an SEC3350, replacement just arrived but has SEC3350 also.

So I spoke to their tech support guys and they said that's the only model they're shipping at the moment and it's impossible to get an LG screen (in the UK if that makes a difference).

This seems crazy given other people have had them replaced, anyway they said they'll send someone round tomorrow to fit another screen and videocard, but specified it would be another SEC3350 screen.

So, I highly doubt the one they fit tomorrow will be any different but they refused to do anything else until they try that -_-

I just got my third SEC3350 (two replacements). The same guy came over. I even felt bad for him after he was done because he had to come over in the middle of a tropical storm (TS Noel).

Once I saw it was a Samsung and pointed this out to him, he insisted on replacing it so we could see if this was one was good (which it wasn't).

I've actually started to consider the possibility that maybe all SEC3350s are "grainy", that this is just how these screens are, and it's a matter of personal opinion whether the grain bothers you or not. Some people don't even notice it on my screen whereas some people can't stand to look at it. Has anyone ever gotten a "good" SEC3350 screen?

I don't even know what to do anymore. It's gotten to the point where I'm so used to the screen I barely care and don't want to waste more time trying to get another replacement. For the second replacement, Dell was already reluctant to change it and wanted to blame it on "customer perception".

I did talk to some guy in escalations and asked him whether it would be possible to change my screen for a non-TrueLife WSXGA+ and he said this was possible. Are WSXGA+ non-TrueLife screens decent?

I just ordered an Inspiron 1520 yesterday and then saw all the posts on the grainy screen. My heart sank as I had ordered the WXGA+ (1440x900).

I chatted with Dell sales today not expecting much, but she confirmed that my laptop would be shipping with the LG screen. She confirmed that the screen model number is LPLF300 and the Dell part number is XK309. She gave me a case number as well.

Perhaps Dell is only using LG screens? I will see it when I believe it...

    Ordered:

    2.2 Ghz, 800Mhz, 4M L2 Cache
    4 GB DDR2, 667 Mhz
    15.4 inch display (1440x900)
256 MB Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT
    120GB 7200 SATA HD

I got a refurb Laptop from Dell. I think the screen looks fine. Its a Samsung. This is my first post where I read the connection that Samsung was the Grainy one. I knew before now that LG was supposedly the better one but I didnt know which model was the bad one. Well anyway, its not bothering me. Can somebody take a picture of the grain that people are bothered by. With a digital cam on a nice high res would be good.

I quote myself. Well above is false. I get home and check it out and its definately crappy looking compared to my old HP zx5000 and pretty much any other LCD I look at Laptop or otherwise. But there goes the problem. I got it from the outlet. what options I got?

So if I ordered a Vostro 1400 and had this grainy screen I could just call Dell and request an LG? And assuming that is true how would I get it? Would I install it or would someone install it for me? Is there any risk in this? Do I send it away?

    Call and complain about it!

I also got my 1720 from the outlet and I just sent it back for a screen replacement.

My warranty is the "mail in" type so Dell wouldn't send someone over to do it...

BTW, I went to staples and played with a small beautiful SONY notebook. Beautiful screen it had. Crystal clear, perfect.

Kind of sad that every Dell I have seen has had a terrible screen.

I just had my LCD replaced today. The original LCD was a SEC3350 and was a bit grainy and had poor viewing angles although I didn't think it was too bad at the time. Then I looked at the replacement LCD and all I can say is WOW. The screen is absolutely gorgeous and its a LPLF300 no less. There is no grain what so ever, colors are more vibrant, the screen is so much brighter and viewing angles are excellent. Compared to the LG, my original SEC is total garbage. For those of you still trying to get a LG, don't give up. Its taken me over a month and countless hours on the phone with Dell to finally get a quality screen and I can say thats was totally worth it.

Is it possible to demand the LG when sending back? And is it everybody's experience that when you call for tech support, they are sorta standoffish on the issue? Its hard dealing with offsure tech support too.
As with you Jaquabeem, mines is slightly grainy but the super minimal viewing angle is way much more of a bother to me.

May I ask you what do you mean with "GRAINY"? I'm Italian and I'm afraid that my vostro has grainy Samsung lcd, but I want to be sure.
My is a "sad" story: I received my Vostro on sept 26, and after 2 screen replacement I'm waiting the laptop replacement (but I had to fight for it!), and I worry about the new laptop!

Well, I called support a week ago and the tech guy (India) said that Dell would send me the "screen" so that I could replace it myself.

I took my laptop apart right away.

30 minutes later, Dell calls me and they say that the screen is not a customer repalceble part and that I have to sent my notebook in for service.

I was lazy to put the system together so I only sent the LCD

Dell received it and the RETARDS don't know what to do. They cannot repair it without the rest of the notebook, but they don't ask me to send the other half, or they don't return the damn LCD to me either.

I tried calling 10,000 times and nobody can get in touch with the Depot department

All I want is to have my LCD back. WTF?

After several emails, a couple of phone calls and two screen replacements (all three screens have been grainy SEC3350s), I have convinced Dell Latin America to ship me an XK309 kit, which is supposed to include the LPLF300 screen.

XK309 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 15.4WSXGA+, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., TLF, LGP 1

However, the escalations manager tells me that while they are willing to ship out the part, he does not know whether the XK309 is a whole screen replacement kit or just part of it, since it isn't listed as a kit or part of a kit for my system (this is what he said).

I guess I will ask him to send it out as it is my only chance so far, even though he says I will have to wait 15-20 days for it to be shipped to my country (Dominican Republic) all the way from Austin, TX.

My reasoning is that even if this part number only refers to "part of the kit", it HAS to include the screen, at the least. The rest of the kit is probably just screws and the LCD cable, which I have seen arrive in the same box when my screen was replaced before. All I really need is the screen anyway, it should be a matter of just putting one in place for the other.

That is, unless the cable I am currently using for my Samsung screen is incompatible with the LCD cable for the LG screen... has anyone seen the connectors on LG screens vs. Samsungs? Are they physically different? I doubt it, but I guess there is a chance each screen has a different proprietary connector. If the replacement I get does not include the cable and the connectors are different, that would be very bad.

I just ordered a 1520 with 1680x1050 screen - is that WSXGA+? Can anyone tell me the manuf and Dell part numbers for the LG screens of that spec - is it LPLF300/XK309 as well (as the 1440x900)? I want to call and make sure I am getting the LG screen to avoid any issues.

I have the grainy screen/small viewing angle issue with my dell and called in to tech support a few days ago to get it fixed, (my laptop is from dell outlet).
I just recieved my "return" box from dell. But I was kinda looking forward to using my laptop on thanksgiving holidays all next week. Should I return it right away or wait til after thanksgiving?

ffs, i call tech support, request change in screen, he dont know wtf is grainy, i have to explain, then ask me to plug in external monitor and test then go safe mode then want me to do pc restore.WTF? He doestn even know about the AUO SEC LPLF issue! Is this normal? I am in malaysia. I ask him why does he think its a software issue, he keeps on talking crap, oh damn.. ****.

EDIT : not only that, i have to teach him how to go to check hardware id, and its like i am the technical support guy instead...

he say he never heard of the grainy issue... i have to guide him to dell community forums and read what micheal dell post about the lcd thing. I was gonna ask him if he's new. In the end i could not stand it, i asked " is this dell technical support side?", which he say yes and i thought i called the wrong number.

Got my vostro today, it's fantastic but I have a grainy screen. So, I contacted tech support and I was only on the phone for 10 mins in total. She said that a technician would contact me soon or on Monday to arrange a time to replace my screen with an LG Phillips. She guaranteed I would indeed be getting an LGP. Will let you know how I go!

That's nice. I just got my 1720 with a grainy screen and called support. After updating my video drivers to no avail, I was able to convince the tech that it was a hardware problem, but he refused to send out a LG screen because his system would not allow him to change part numbers. I asked to speak to a supervisor who told me I should just return the Inspiron and get another one. Nice, huh? Not sure what my next steps will be, but I am heading over to Fry's during lunch to see what other 17" notebooks there are out there that I could buy instead of the Dell. I hear that HP and ASUS have nice screens.

This is one of those "I cant wait 7 more hours to find out" type of questions. I sent my Laptop to Dell on Monday of this week after having the shipping box at my house since around mid Nov. I waited because of thanksgiving and I wanted to use my laptop in my travels. Anyway, I sent it in monday for the grainy screen, and my girlfriend just told me I got a box today from Dell. Is that the turn around time for fixing the screen? I hope I dont get home and find out that they said "man nothing wrong with your screen". Or worse yet, "dude u sent it too late".

So I specifically requested an XK309 and managed to convince Dell to send me the part, even though the tech support manager for Latin America said he wasn't sure whether the XK309 included the whole screen kit. I also had to wait a few weeks for it to be shipped to my country.

Sure enough it's an LPLF300. No grain whatsoever and everything is nice and sharp. Neither the LCD cable nor the screws came in the box as I suspected, but the tech just reused the old ones already in my computer (the cables seem to be the same regardless of the manufacturer).

There is no grain and practically NO backlight bleed.

The box stated it was a field service return and refurbished item, not that I care.

I do believe colors are a little washed out and slightly more dull. However, I'm not a good judge of this since I am slightly color blind. I could be imagining things or they could really be a little more dull, but in any case, it sure beats the "grain". I'd take less vivid colors over the grain any day, but that is just my opinion.

It took three replacements and a bunch of emails but I finally got what I wanted...

XK309 is the part number for the LG Phillips 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) screen with TrueLife (glossy), so it is not for the 1720, but for the 1520 and probably the Vostro 1500.

I have the WXGA+ SEC3157 on my Vostro 1500 -- it isn't blurry really, it's just 'sparkly' and I couldn't get used to it. I also have the headphone jack high pitched noise problem (by the way you can really hear it if you plug speakers into the headphone jack and pump up the volume on the speakers, this is what I did when on the phone with technical support).

After reading numerous posts, it seems the ONLY reliable screen is the LG WSXGA+ display (I've seen posts where people say the LG WXGA+ screen is also grainy). If I'm wrong, please let me know if there is a reliably non-grainy WXGA+ screen. So, I called technical support today about my problems and requested an upgrade to the LG WSXGA+ (XK309) screen that people rave about in this thread (and I said I'd pay the difference).

I was told the best solution is a system replacement through customer service. Then customer service told me I cannot replace the WXGA+ with WSXGA+ so they transferred me to returns or retentions (I forget what they called it). They offered me $75 dell coupon or $50 refund -- I just want a screen that isn't sparkly. They told me the only solution is a return and then reorder with the WSXGA+. UPS comes next week to pick it up. I haven't decided if I should just order an HP or try Dell again.

they told you false.... i had a MATTE WXGA and i had it replaced with True life WSXGA+ free of charge. Use dell chat to get what you want... But dont be an idiot and say "oh i want a glossy wsxga+ display by lg please...". instead find the PART number that corresponds to LG WSXGA+ and request for that via DELL CHAT.

I have had my 1721 for 3 weeks now and when I initially read these forums I became nervous because my screen was listed as a sec. When I received it I found the the screen was perfect, no dead pixels or grainy screen. The colors are bright and crisp. Found out I have a sec 3258, I hope this wxga+ screen stays this way. I haven't seen any complaints yet about this screen.

    Hi!
I have the same display but matte, in the Latitude D830... It is a SEC3350. But in Dell Forum someone sayit is a Seiko Epson...
Anyway, it is not good at all.
    I want to change it.
The Italian technician told me that there are two different wuxga available, he was not able to determine the manufacturer at the moment, but I can ask him to do it.
So, do you suggest the Lg even over the Philips? And, in the eventuality that the manufacturer are others, do you know some other good wsxga+ available in Dell?

Ok, wrong, at first there is one WUXGA and two WXGA, and anyway they will not change the WSXGA+ for other res. i didn't know, i first discovered it with them, then here, I have read quite all posts here, as I am preparing a long long long list of links and posts with people talking bad of SEC3350, I will send it to my commercial and a nice technician of Gold Tech Support. They will try to forward it to their superiors... In the D830 there is only the SEC available at that res. So they say they can change only for another sec, but My point of view is:
Del promise OPTIMUM quality. This display is scientifically and statistically proven to be crap. So Dell must change it.
Dell creates rules to optimize the Dell/client relationship and to guarantee to the client a change of the defective piece with a good one.
But in my case all SEC are defective, and only SEC are available, so Dell is NOT allowing me to have the right to receive a good product.
So the rule is no more effective, as it is producing the effect opposite to the one that needed its existence.

They are intentionally selling a crappy display even knowing they are crap, just because they bought a lot of them and they prefer to betray their clients then to throw those craps.
They are also seling them in buisiness notebooks because busines buyiers do not have the return policy. Ad they are also not making avalable an alternative display, so that people must keep that crap yes or yes.
I guess that this would be easily be considered illegal.
Also, Dell can tell me as much as it wants that in my order it figures I asked for a WSXGA+ and it is a WSXGA+ so i can't say the product does not correspond to what ordered, but this crap is WSXGA+ only on paper.
I have done comparative pictures of the D830 with a WSXGA+ SEC3350 and a ASUS with a WXGA AUO and a old Toshiba Satellite with a old Toshiba 1024x768 display.
Both are way better then the SEC3350 under ANY aspect.
i will send them those pictures...
Let's see if I can post them here.
Perfect. These 5 are a Toshiba/Dell comparison. The worst display is the SEC3350. The Toshiba it is not even a WXGA. it should NOT have better viewing angles...

Now a SEC3350 to AUO WXGA comparison.
The worst diaplay is the SEC3350.
The WXGA should NOT have better illumination.
And even less a WXGA by AUO...

And now some picture of the SEC3350 at its best.
If this is its best, imagine its worst...
See how inexistent are viewing angles and how much light leackage there is...
And if there is some lawyer here, please tell me if selling these low end display in high end notebook at the price of high end display proclaming high end specs and performances and then avoinding the client to change this crap is not illegal...
i am seriously thinking of demanding them...

You must be one of these two things:
    1) a Dell mercenary, payed to try to desauthorate all this people judgements. In this case you should just go away from here soon and be shamed.
    2) an honest guy who has short vision and can't do 2+2 and realize that if he is the ONLY one in the all world taling well of the SEC3350, this cannot mean that all the other 10000 guys are stupid blind idiots...

Also, I have a Latitude D830, the coated is matte, the SEC3350 is grainy, sparkly, sandy, oily, durty, it has got a LOT of light leakage as you can see even compared to MUCH inferior screens, and the matte coating is so bad that it produces a sort of optical 3d illusion which makes eyes tired very soon. I stayed nights in front of the Toshiba without NEVER feel a bit tired, but after two hours in front of the SEC I must stop.
Forgive me to have been so rude, but If you are lucky and you have got one of the very few good exemplar of the SEC3350, you should not play with other people bad luck... I paid a lot for a high end notebook, I have choosen Dell for the brand reliability, a name a warranty... But I have got a piece of crap. Paying it as a piece of high technology. And as it is the ONLY WSXGA+ available on D830, I cannot change it if not with another same piece of crap. And this is NOT what I call a right and fair, equilibrated, correct brand/client relationship.
Dell is steeling me. It is steeling all us...
WE should seriously put all togheter, and send a letter to Dell with our names and our systems short description, and strongly ask for it to stop selling us crap for gold.
WE desreve respect. WE deserve the quality we had been promised and which we have paid for!
