I also recently got the courage to do this about a week ago. Great results. Although it didn't help the CPU whine much...hrm...anyway, great job guys.

With ref to MrBigglesworth's method I fixed the noise!(digital morse code, crackle sound), without a complete dismantle of my brand new Vostro 1500.

Yes noise is being picked up by the base and also the metal shielding that covers the the underside of the lid, thats how this method worked for MrBigglesworth' & myself, a small flap that touches the headphone jack socket from the lid:

I tried unscrewing that case screw several turns, the one just below the headphone jack socket, and when I pressed up on that screw the noise did go away. I then followed the rest of MrBigglesworth's instructions and lifted the lid a bit (10-15mm) and bent the small metal flap just above the headphone jack socket up 8-10mm with a small electrical screw driver with tape wrapped around it's shaft as to not damage the case lid, and it solved the problem completely. many thanks MrBigglesworth

This might not work for everyone but it worked perfectly for me. My headphone jack is not picking up any interference (digital morse code, crackles) noise anymore.

does anybody has a backup of n19htmare's pictures? the files are down.

I forgot to save the images, and tomorrow comes the technician to fix the problem, and i wanted to show the pictures if what he did wouldn't work.

HA! I entered this thread hoping to find a quick fix for my 1525 hum/hiss problem... but you essentially have to pull the entire laptop apart! If I was a major techy I'd give it a go but I'm just not game enough. I'll just have to live with the problem.

Bravo to the fella who found the solution and those brave enough to pull it off.

for us 1525 owners, the method described here cannot be used on a 1525 (i think). the 1420/1520 seems to have a separate chip for the headphone jacks whereas the 1525 has them integrated into the mobo.

Hi there guys, I would just like to say that I have an Inspiron 1520 with that buzzing noise coming through my headphone jack and it only started a couple of days ago. I knew that calling Dell would be a waste of time so I did a search on the net to see if anyone else had the problem too. Thankyou so much for posting your ideas as I have just pulled my laptop apart and put some electrical tape over the top of the jack. I am now listening to Il Divo without any buzzing sound through the headphones. This could have been disaster for me as I often watch TV on the laptop so that hubby and I can continue to watch different programs and still stay in the same room. Thankyou, Thankyou, Thankyou!
