Looks like some people got lucky - maybe off a different lot - to get 650 on the GPU *and* 530 on memory. Most run about 600 / 500.

You are using a much lower resolution. So the results can not be compared.

    650/530 3Dmark06 (Vista 1280x800@32) -)4560
    650/520 3Dmark06 (Vista 1280x1024@32) -) 4085

    Both using the 196.04 drivers.

Using RivaTuner, I'm getting stable results with 650/530 and the Shader Clock@1425 MHz. Results in a 3Dmark06 score of 4676@1280x800.

That's about as high as it goes for me, I think. I can crank it up to 675/550/1425 (4774 in 3Dmark06) but then it becomes slightly unstable.

    169.04 drivers.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I got the driver. I installed it. I OCed to the level that everyone else seems to be getting and my 3D mark score dropped to 976

Then I un OCed it and it rose to 983. This driver blows.

I guess the installation got messed up. I tried again and it's working.

Still, the highest I can get with Riva is 525/450 withe the shader at 1050. Brought my score up to 3823. Still a nice bump up from stock. just wish it could go higher. 3D mark wouldn't even finish higher than that.

when you guys overclock it, how long can you play games (demanding games like COD4) before it starts getting too hot and risky for something to break? would a cooling pad allow me to play demanding games for long hours?

depends how far you want to overclock it. obviously, you don't want such high speeds where it will create artifacts and unusually graphical defects due to the immense heat being produced. you'll want to look for a balance in performance and temperature.

i've got mine OC'ed at 630/500/1260 with 3DMark06 score of 4432 and a max load temp of 80c.

thats really good, how long do you think you can play a demanding game before you think it's starting to be harmful for the comp?

I have a problem and need help,
    I've got a new vostro 1500 with a good 8600GT.
The new 8600gt is one of the better ones for overclocking. My last one only went up to 650GPU/460Mem, the new 8600m GT clocks to 650GPU/550MEM I get better scores in 3DM06 as well. I even managed to get to 5100 3DM06 Points (@1024x768).

Now the Problem: I want to play MOH Airborne Multiplayer

    I used to get around 35FPS with the slower 8600GT @ 650/450
and now with the new better OC 8600m GT I'm getting around 20FPS and lots of lag with the same settings!!!
I've tried new drivers but I can't figure out what's wrong.

I can't imagine the first 8600mGT with the lower 650/450 OC was faster than the newer 8600m GT at 650/550 OC!!!

And it's lagging in all games, not just MOH....

I just found the problem, silly me...
For some reason the nVidia 3D driver options were changed from Application to User defined....
I put the standard "3D Application defined" default and now it's OK again!!!

    @chris
Some 8600mGT's can OC higher than others. Just like some CPU's go higher than others...

as long as you have a reasonable OC, your not likely to decrease the life of your hardware significantly. By the time it dies, it would probably become obselete anyways.

I'm currently going thru 3dmark runs getting to my top oc speed, but my 8600m GT has behaved even better than I thought!

Max I've gotten it (up to now) is 575/1150/475, and reached 3908 3dmarks 2006, using the laptopvideo2go's 169.04 drivers on Vista32 on my Vostro 1500 at 1280x800.

I'm gonna try to keep it even longer running, to see how much I can get it to stable. :p

Dell 1720 here...using Forceware drivers v.169.09. I just got my laptop about a week ago and here's what I gotten out of it thus Far. 650/540 3DMark06 scores of 4934@1280x720 and 4227@1280x1024 and 4253 @1280x1024@650/550. Not to bad I think and after about an hour of Bioshock I'm only pushing around 60 degrees Celsius!

    I got the following (in my signature) with my 8600GT @ 650/550 with Riva 2.06 - 169.04 driver - 3DMark06 -
    1024x768: 5235 Points
    1280x800: 4556 Points
    1280x1024: 4225 Points

    I run at a safer 625/525 normaly and still get 4057 Points @ 1280x1024

How does that compare with other, faster 8600M GT DDR3 or 512MB notebook cards? How does the asus G1~G2 compare?

I'm currently overclocked on my Inspiron 1520's 8600GT at 630/1260/520 so far and it's been running great, 4 hours of Call of Duty 4 and F.E.A.R. and nothing's gone wrong. Went from 4.7 to 5.4 Graphics score in Vista after OC. ^^
I used RivaTuner and nVidia Forceware version 169.17 from LaptopVideo2Go.

    EDIT:
Tried OC on 670/1340/570, unrecommended as i started getting artefacts. I keep three profiles and the max i will go is 650/550, but only for the occasional high performance gaming.
    Defaults set at 630/520. --> 3DMark07 Score of 4401

The middle number is the shader clock, it's usually linked with the Core clock, so if you increase the core clock, the shader clock increases with it. I guess it's not really an issue there.

Apparently I wasn't overclocking :( just having atitool and ntune think that.

What do I have to do to overclock this? I try installing nvidia drivers but they say I don't have any nvidia hardware.

from what i know, rivatuner gives me the specs of my graphics card in the main window, my 8600GT's on a laptop and it gives me:
    128bit G84 (A2, 32sp) with 256MB DDR2

there may be other OC utilities you may use but this is all i know for now.
Check from the manufacturer's website or your hardware box?

    highest i've gotten was 4334 @ 1280x800.

    specs:

    Vostro 1500

    580 / 500 with RivaTuner
    169.04 Drivers
    T5470 @ 1.6
    2GB RAM
    8600M GT 256MB (duh)
    Windows XP

I kind of want to push it a little further, but don't know how much to go. What temperature is safe for these things? My vid card is usually between 50c and 54c during regular use, goes up to about 58 during moderate games (CS:S, F.E.A.R.) and 60-65c during really graphics heavy games (COD4, Crysis).

    Hey guys

I bought an Inspiron 1520 back in July.
It was delivered in August then stolen on October 1st.

I finally recovered it (via the lojack software - the thief went to jail) 2 days ago, after over 3 months of it being gone.

One of the things the thief did, apparently, was change the drivers.

Before it was stolen, I could use NTUNE to change the core and memory bus speeds (to 610/510 or so)

Now when I use ntune and try to change them, it always snaps back to 475/400

Anyway - what I want to know is, is there a consensus now to the best driver that came out that allows overclocking? I want to go back to being able to overclock.

:O mt how did you get your laptop stolen? (the thief deserves the jail anyway.)
Also hwa, 700 core speed? that is just weird... ppl wouldn't be recommending running at that speed passing 650 would start to show the artifacts.

I use RivaTuner, but nVidia's website has their own version on ntune thats designed specifically for use with their graphics. It's integrated into the nVidia Control Panel, could go try it out.

I just installed the latest available BETA driver available for VISTA 169.28 and it allows me to overclock.

Just get both the Driver files and the modified INF file from laptopvideo2go.com and re-install your drivers.

I had no luck with the ATITool, but Nvidia's Ntune works just fine to overclock my 8600M GT

The thief stole it out of my car (cut through the windows)

But the lojack software did exactly what it is supposed to. I think he got around 30-45 days in jail. And now he has a criminal record.

Another question about overclocking (I apologize if this has been covered and answered 500 times before) - how do I get the overclock settings to stay past a reboot? I dont want to have to run ntune every time I boot - but that seems to be how I had to do it before.

There does not seem to be a vista 169.28 at laptopvideo2go.com

The latest they have is 169.12 and that is for vista 64 bit. For vista 32 bit, it seems to be 169.09 or 167.45

I have a Dell 1520 and am able to run 675/550 all day long with temps never getting over 60c. Drivers 169.09, RivaTuner. Tried 169.32, but booting failed 1/3 of the time, so I did a system restore to get back to 169.09 and things are back to running great.

That would be pretty normal when doing basic tasks. What about doing graphics intensive stuff, such as gaming? I have mine at 630/520 and its around 45C degrees average (plus its winter here) and while im gaming (eg. Bioshock, CoD4) it gets up to around 65-70C
