It seems not many people have been overclocking their 8600m GT's to their limits, I'm wondering how high roughly the core and the ram can stably get up to?

I know each card will vary, but in general there usually somewhere near each other and I'm getting my 1720 soon depending on delays and am curious, currently i have a 9300 with a 6800 go and I've gotten it past stock 6800 go ultra card performance, I'm wondering if the 8600 gt even with ddr2, could get near performance to a stock 8600gt with ddr3, or even surpass that to somewhere inbetween a 8600gtddr3 and stock 8700m gt.

If you've overclocked, post you core/mem speeds you got up to, and post 3dmark( these should be more valuable than a 3dmark score compared to other cards, because its the same card just comparing it's clocks ) and/or game tests scores, and state if that was the highest before artifacts or just where you decided to stop.

It would be interesting to see how this card overclocks in comparison with the beautifully overclockable 7900gs.

I had to change drivers. Some drivers allowed me to apply the changed settings, and others didn't.

I got a little over 3700 marks @1280x1024 on 3dmark06 with inspiron 1720 and 8600mGT at 620/499. I might be able to get over that, but I haven't tried. Temps stayed moderate -- I don't think I got over 70, even when I was gaming hard.

I was conservative, and Ive just gone up to 610Mhz Core, 510Mhz Memory, and gotten 3600 in 3dMark06 (and my Vista Experience score up.2 from 4.6 to 4.8)

No problems at all, no heating up either. But I dont feel like pushing it, until I see what other people post here :)

Also, I used the drivers that came with my 1520 - I havent touched them. NTune overclocks them just fine.

    Also, I have the WSXGA+ (1680x1050) screen.

One other thing - WIth Ntune, at least, The settings default when I reboot the laptop. I.e. they stay when I sset them, and I can use them at the higher settings, but I have to do that each time I boot. Any ideas how to get them to stick?

Well I have the vostro 1500 and 3dmark wont let me run at 1280x1024! At 1280x800 at stock speeds I just got a score of 3300 odd. Tempted to do some overclocking as the temps are really low, so any 15x.xx series can OC?

Best thing to overclock teh card with would be ATI tool. And set yourself some profiles such as Max, defult & low power. Then give each profile a shortcut key combination. I use ctrl+alt+a number on the numpad. So its not likley you will accidently load diffrent profiles.

But it is awesome becasue when im in a game and want some more speed i just hit the combination & the cards speed changes instantly. And when you want to goto defult or low power mode just do the same thing. & aslong as you put ATItool in your startup it will be there all the time automatically.

Does the 256mb 8600gt use up an additional 256mb of system memory to make it 512? I thought I read that somewhere

Currently using ATITOOL. Core is curretly at 661 and is working fine (Default 475). About to max out memory in a few minutes (Default is 700). Although my temperatures ARE running at about 92 degrees C. (Please note that I am using as Asus G1S-X1 laptop, which has always had problems with heat, even before overclocking I was at 90ish C underload. BTW I'm using the newest 6.xx something drier (Can't remember the exact version, but it allows for overclocking =) )

    556 x 451 = 3484 3dmark06
    475 x 400 = 3220 3dmark06 (stock)

    both with 165.01 driver.

what prog can i use to show me the highest temp it got up to while running the 3dmark test?

I don't have the time right now to run a 1280x1024 comparison (feel like gaming tonight). But I did just overclock using 169.01 drivers on Windows XP 32-bit running 1280x800.

Score was 3300 with 167.26 drivers stock speeds 475/400

Score went to 4155 on 169.01 drivers clock speeds 550/475

More on this later (Yes I KNOW 1280x800 isn't the same as 1280x1024)

Temperature never went over 62 during the tests.

The new 169.01 drivers are great!

    Got a 4721 3dmark06 score at 1280x800 (can't seem to select 1280x1024) on my Vostro 1700.

Overclocked at 675(core)/550(memory). Temperature never went over 61 degrees Celsius.

I thought the 167.26 drivers where good, the 169.01 drivers blow them away. Here's my 3DMark06 scores using stock speeds (475/400)

    163.44 - 3008
    167.26 - 3057
    169.01 - 3134

Overclocking scores on the 169.01 drivers as follows:

    523/440 - 3430 (I started adding 10% to core & memory stock speeds)
590/500 - 3841 (I worked my way up to here. Very stable no artifacts)

    BTW, I'm using ATITool 0.27 to o/c.

I get very stable results for 650/530 which yields a 3dmarks06 score of 4571@1200x800 and 4113@1440x900, and doesn't get the temperature over 62 degrees Celsius. Haven't experienced any artifacts during gaming. (Vostro 1700)

    Hi!

I have a 1720 T7300 8600M GT, Vista HP 32-bit, and installed the 169.01 drivers from Nvidia (Replaced the INF file with the 165.01 from Laptop Video)

Well, I ran the ATI tool and I get that NV...driver has stopped working and it has recovered error.

I just tried the newer 169.04 with the same results.

I also installed NTune and RivaTuner, but no go either.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Vostro 1500 - 169.04 Drivers

    600 / 510 = 4300 3DMark06 perfectly stable five hours GPU testing

    I run at 590 / 490 = 4150 3DMark06 just to ensure stability.

HOLY CRAP! 650 / 530! You should consider yourself very lucky. I can't get much over 600 / 510. And yeah, choose the faster memory over GPU clock and it'll most always do better for you. GPU is usually waiting for memory info, so faster it goes the better.

I have mine overclocked in the BIOS now which makes for some interesting performance differences!

Didn't push it too hard, so stayed at 475/575 as that is plenty enough for me. My 8600M GT is running GDDR2, does that make a difference to GDDR3?

I often use my laptop rested on my armchair (big fluffy one in which the laptop sinks into it) so heat is around 68 degrees at most. At what temperature is it considered dangerous?

Today, I tried again with new drivers. With the new drivers the old OC is a bit unstable. But with a lower memoryclock my 8600m GT managed to gain more points using the 169.04 drivers. Rocksolid. Played Crysis and UT3 on this setting for a few hours. Will measure the temp next time.

    I can't run 3dmark at 1280x800, so I can't compare to those results.

    Forceware 158.45 - 650/530 3Dmark06 (Vista 1280x1024@32) -) 3856

Set Windows' screen resolution to 1280x1024, you may need an external monitor if your laptop's screen doesn't support that resolution. Control Panel > Display > Settings

I think its only some that can't be. Supposedly the 169.xx ones are fine. I might try soon and find out.

    630/500 and 1260 shaders

    3DMark06 - 4432 (1280x800)

temps are stable, games play very nicely. CoD4 demo looked awesome, and CoD2 gameplay is definately smoother than before the OC. I'll see if I can push it higher, but I don't see the need to other than for squeezing out a bit more FPS. a very good GPU for the mid-level notebook gamer.

Just managed to run 3dmark06 @ 1280x800. Got 4560 points @ 650/530. About the same as LeFosse.
