Thanks for that.![]()
I just called up Dell and came to know that mine is in transit too by Bluedate. EDD is tomorrow.![]()

Hello guys/girls,
Well I just went through the various responses in this thread because I personally had many questions hovering over my head.
I purchased a Dell XPS 1530 during my presence in Malaysia in January. Over there they had great deals especially with the blue ray rewritable drive thrown in. In total in came upto only around 80k rs. And this is with all the upgrades maxed out except for 2. I chose the 1440 resolution screen and 3gb ram.
I had returned home to India in February after which I had noticed certain deficiencies on the aspect of the touchpad etc.
The Dell XPS tech team which was based in Malaysia, Penang were very courteous and helpful and immediately flew down parts in case part replacement was necessary.
Now I got a " so called unisys" technician who came and tinkered with my laptop. Towards the finished part of the process..he broke a flex cable lock which is attached to the motherboard. Luckily I observed what he was doing because he was trying to say its fine etc.
I called up the tech support and those guys said ok they will give replacement because I told them outright I am not having any of these guys to replace the motherboard. I could have done the work myself actually.
I like any of you who have had a techy visit you to post your experience. I think the problem in India is these unisys like companies pay some 2nd or 3rd party people to do the repairs..This I confirmed with the guy who came with the parts. He came in a bus ok! with and lcd screen etc. Though Dell has deputed Unisys to do the job these unisys guys outsource it to smaller companies...whose techy have no prior experience on the system. On top of it ..a system like the 1530 is very compact inside.
The chap who came was impatient, always on the phone on one hand. balancing the lcd screen on this thighs etc..I just hope he doesnt represent the good techies out there. It sucks to see something you paid for clobbered by some idiot. But sometimes I feel overall in india hardware support is poor. Its not that they dont have the knowledge. Its just that they just dont care kind of attitude. They did not pay for it so they dont really want to bother to care...they dont mind using a metal screw driver to wedge and lift the media key strip etc. Very insensitive to the feelings of the person who has paid hard earned cash for it.
When I called the xps tech support he was panicky and told me not to inform them that he broke it. He was afraid his company would charge him for the motherboard irrespective of whether dell makes his employer pay the cost for the mistake. I felt really bad for the dude..but I did not want to risk being suspected of opening the laptop myself etc..so I just explained the to the xps people what actually happened.
Those guys are malaysians...and they tell me this is not the first time they have heard of such headaches..and they feel surprised that indians are so damn good when it comes to software handling..how come the they lack the etiquette to handle the hardware. I think the fault is on us indians..we always settle for as long as it works policy. We never force the industry be in service industry or anything else...to give us the quality we pay for. And on top of it..we are taxed also.
However after 2 and half weeks of criss cross phone calls the customer care in india assigned me a person who was very nice in assisting me.
I finally got to order in my replacement. But this time the order originates from india. Now what sent shivers downn my spine is the fact that the CSR told me they are manufactured in Chennai.
I know it sounds bad that I am not having confidence in our production capabilities but can you blame me for being suspicious. I was really hoping that it would be manufactured in Malaysia. However the CSR told me so far everything has been good except for some cases where the parts are missing etc eg. the bluetooth module...My jaw did drop a moment of hearing that.
That was when I started searching for forums where fellow indians are discussing system ordered here and made in India specifically Dell XPS 1530.
And I think some of the fundamental questions asked by so many members remain half answered without any convincing replies..
So below I am going to ask some questions and also tell some facts on the Dell xps 1530 which i have learnt along the way
1. Where is the Dell XPS 1530 manufactured? In India? Chennai?
Dell xps tech support ie. malaysia told that its true laptops are manufactured in Chennai but all XPS laptops are made in Malaysia.
So what is the truth here. Could it be dell imports the made in malaysia xps laptops and slaps a made in india sticker so that they dont have to pay some taxes or avoid customs hassles.
If indeed they are made here can others in the forum who have received please post on the build quality..are the presence of any scratches etc eg. on the screen pr on the touch sensitive panel etc. any loose fitting hinge cover problems. How is the handrest brushed metal finish. Have you checked the screws at the bottom to check their heads for any sign of wear and tear. Any creaking or clicking sounds. I the laptop steady when placed on a flat surface or does it rock a little..Any Dead Pixel issue? How is the lid tightness when closing and opening. Is it loose?
You need to check such things..
2. Have all of you who have received xps 1530 checked the GDDR of your Nvidia geforce 8600m gt?
It must be GDDR3. Don't let anyone tell otherwise. If you did not get it for the above graphic card on xps 1530 then you system is wrongly configured.
BUT REMEMBER this is only for the Dell XPS. If you have purchased inspiron model with Nvidia geforce 8600m gt then your GDDR would be GDDR2
3.How many of you received a grainy screen be it ultra high resolution or 1440 resolution?
I personally have not seen a grainy screen. But i have inquired alot about it with the tech team guys. And they are quite frank about it. They told me they had received so many complains about it.and this issue primarily affects the ultra high resolution lcds. Samsung lcd seems to be the culprit. However they said they have contacted experts on this and compared screens etc..even an independant quality team was employed. What they found was that the grainyness is only there when see on a white background and but the samsung panel are of much better quality in colour representation etc including wider view angle. The Lg supposedly uses a simpler interface and it perfect when viewed at the correct angle. But its colors are not that great and viewing agle is bad. Infact Samsung panels are costlier than LG.This is the feedback i got yesterday.
By the way my LG on my initial laptop developed a dead pixel.I am bothered by it because I am getting a replacement. But they told me it a very contentious issue and usually they solve case by case basis.
Anyway for those of you who are LG worshippers the liklelihood of you getting an LG is very high if you ordered I440 resolution. But remember even LGs can be imperfect.
I am currently awaiting the arrival of my system on the 21st.that is an estimated date. God only knows if it will prolonged. I ordered on 11th and it was still manufactured till I called on 17th and asked customer care what is going on. Later I received an email saying they are facing shortage of parts. I was like WAT!!!!!
She mentioned she has prioritise my order since its a replacement and would have it flown as soon as out of the factory.
Yesterday in the noon it showed in the process of being shipped. So I was thinking once again..where is it actually originating from.
Oh i was able to obtain the service tag but I was not able to pull up any details on parts on the dell website.
I called the tech people in malaysia and gave the service tag. They couldnt either. He explained that maybe the system is not updated. He tried to cross check with the factory entry, to no avail. He suggested it could be maybe the system was manufactured in Chennai.
Well I just hope I get a good one. I will be pissed if its got some lame imperfections. I hope our Indians bros dont let me down.
When I tell my friends its made in india they kinda roll their eyes.. I want to prove to them its equally good and our workforce is as disciplined and skilled as any country abroad.
All for now..later nite -
Hi All,
All of you who are worried about the arrival of XPS 1530 ,I think you should receive it within 7-10 days unless there is some serious problem like shortage of parts etc.
My expected arrival date was 15th April,2008 whereas the system arrived in Chandigarh on 1 April,2008.
As regards the build it looks good but Im not sure whether it was built in chennai or malaysia .
One thing is true ,which I learnt recently that there is NO XPS support in India .It is a nightmare to reach the XPS support via phone .But if you have a lot of time at your disposal and dont mind waiting in a que then there is no problem .Once you are linked to the XPS support then you are in direct contact with the XPS support team in Malaysia .
XPS support team in Malaysia speak only in English and they dont know hindi.
Since XPS laptops sales is increasing Dell should shift the XPS support to India also .
As regards XPS email support I think it is non existent .If any one knows about the XPS email address then please quote it here .
Regards. -
hsbrar,
why don't you just see what the sticker at the bottom of the lappy says,,made in?.....
thanks for the reassuring note on deliver though cheers.. -
Hello Hsbrar,
Well the reason for the long queue in the Malaysian XPS Dell support is because they are the nerve center supporting Entire Asia Pacific.
We had call centers for dell here in india couple years back..Their service was pathetic and received numerous complains worldwide..Hence Dell rolled back their call center here in India.
Since an XPS purchase is a premium one..I suppose they dont want the owners to have quality as an issue in terms of service..I dont see why they need to know hindi. Its totally unnecessary in terms of cost and training. You will only end up having a team who will have diluted english speaking hinglish. Its not like call centers in India are leaning Chinese.
try this email add for XPS support [email protected]
and this is the number direct to XPS 1800-425-2066.
The customer care here is definitely courteous too but they rather you email to them.. You just cant get hold of the person you want. Their IVR will ring their phone which ends up in voice mail.
I have never failed to speak each time I dial the XPS support team. I use the number above as it cuts across the unnecessary choices in the ivr. -
Ordered Vostro 1700 on 9th April, original Del date was 22nd April
BUT
My online status has changed to 22nd May ??
They say it's an error but i'll see by Tues ! -
Thanks for the XPS support info.
I would like to stress here that although the Malaysian XPS support team speaks a sort of Chinglish but they are quite supportive and courteous once the phone line goes through to them .
This is my personal opinion but I think XPS support should have atleast one dedicated support representative for each customer who could give quick support either via email or otherwise as soon as possible .
But then I think the question of shortage of personel arises .Ive heard Dell is laying off about 8000 people soon but Im not sure .
Regards,
H.S.Brar -
I called the Customer Care on Thursday and later in the day she emailed saying that there was a shortage of parts. However she said she will have it flown down immediately once its out of production. The estimated date changed overnight and it showed Shipping out of factory. The date shows as 21st April.
I dont know wats going on. How in the world they sorted parts problem in less than 6 hours. Or is this just another reason they give when they are running behind scehdule. Or do they come from abroad. Some replies mentioned that Sat was a holiday for customs etc.. so I dont know how they are going make sure it reaches me on monday when the online tracker does even show they have progressed to Transit.
I realised those responsible for updating arent doing a good job at it..Its as if they just dont have enough staff.. I hope they are not cutting corners when it comes to manufacturing the laptops especially in chennai. -
Dear Hsbrar...
Have you not still figured where your Dell XPS 1530 is manufactured? I am anxiously awaiting your opinion on the built quality etc if its indeed " Made at Home" I mean India.
Hope you can reveal soon enough!!!! Pls pray i receive one in a good condition. -
Dear vads24,
I just had a look at the underside of my XPS 1530 ,it says "Made In India".
Actually I have another Dell latittutude C610 laptop also but it's for the first time Im seeeing "Made in India" on a Dell laptop .
I dont have any issues with the build quality except for the slight lag in the touchpad which I think is now one of the "salient features " of XPS 1530 laptop.
Neither have I experienced any shock as is reported in some forums .
Best of luck for your new XPS 1530.
I would once again like to tell potential XPS buyers in India that dont rely either on online status on what you are told on the phone .
After I placed my order one day my status showed in production, after two days "ship from factory" but when I enquired on phone they told me that there is some problem with my order and my system is still in the factory .
Then till 2-3 days it kept showing "ship from factory" .Suddenly it shows in transit and I come to know that it has almost reached my destination .
So all of you will receive your within 10 days atleast if you have ordered the Merom processors .May be Penryn processors might take quite some time to be shipped from Malaysia or where ever .
vads24 do let me know which system configuration have you ordered and also about when you receive it and In what condition.
Just be patient .

Good Morning to every one,
Well Hsbrar i have posted my future wife's spec as my signature!!! heheh..
and oh yeah i may have a solution for your touchpad issues. First and foremost upgrade you bios to A08. which i believe was the latest one. It was an urgent release especially dealing with numerous touchpad issues.. also...tweak the settings of your touchpad...acceleration etc.. I too had a little prob with that since i used a 14.1 inch for like four years. increase the sensitivity and decrease the touch check.. it works fine..
Dont settle for " this is how this system probably behaves" ok buddy!!!
You would get a freeze every time you press the eject button on the touch sensitive buttons.. irrespective of whether there is a cd in there or not. it doesnt happen when you right click and eject..According to dell its coz of the direct hardware access by the button. its a very short freeze. DOnt by accident slip in a mini cd...it jacks the drive. and difficult to remove. And removing the cd drive is like removing all your intestines to remove your lung...hehe
regards...

Thanks for the Tips Bro

Lucky you ordered the T9300 penryn processor because it became available with Dell just 2-3 days after I had already confirmed my order with T7500 processor .
Now I think they will not upgrade my processor .Even if they do someone told me the cost will come out to be very high.
Secondly Dell started giving 3GB RAM as default but the day my order was confirmed it was only 2 GB .Will ask XPS support whether they can upgrade my 2GB RAM to 3GB RAM .
As regards BIOS I have already upgraded some days back and there seems to be some improvement in the touchpad lag .
Incidentally I had read about not putting in small CDs as soon as I received the system .I do have small CDs for some drivers but thank god I had read the instructions before hand .
I found one issue which is heating up of the HDD and consequently the palm rest also heats up .This issue can be easily resolved by raising the left side of palmrest a bit by putting something underneath it if the surface is not flat eg a bed .You will notice a lot of difference by doing this .
The 90w adapter is heating up a lot despite the leather covering .I dont know what will happen it May-June unless Im in an AC room.
I think all XPS 1530 users in India should have at least one seperate discussion thread where issues pertaining to only this model should be discussed.

Hie...I am huffing and puffing here to find out where my Box of Computer is. I tried tracking it on Blue dart to no avail.. And i just rang up these guys in Dell and he said the invoice was generated on 17th so shud be arriving today...Best part is they dont even have my waybill on hand and my service tag is invalid to me when i check online..Well at least i confirmed so far I got a Lg. At least thats what i think i got. if what he said is correct.
I think all these hassles are coz of the replacement.
I m sorry to hear that they came couple days after u confirmed..the best thing to do is always check usa and malaysia websites..Then YOU know it will be out soon in India.
Heat hmmm so far yeah it can get kinda clammy warm but i use a 9 cell so its raised like on stilletos.. your must be too.. if its getting warm excessively then u might be having a problem..I hope its not for your peace of mind. I never put it flat on the bed etc.it will suck in all the fibre..
I am in Manipal and the heat is catching up today. after 4 days of grey cool clouds..
Yup there ought to be a special thread for users from india..but not many are interested though..again maybe we can start it after all...i really dont bother with the adapter...its bound to get hot. this is not abnormal i think..
Hmmm about the upgrade..well processor is unlikely because it will cost more than what you originally have. and the ram...well if its not of extra cost...you may be able convince them of giving it..but then there is a problem involved..
Your ram are arranged in Dual Mode. Meaning u msut be having 1gb ram on each of the 2 slots available..
1*1
In my case its 2g Plus 1 gb ram...so i dont know if they will be willing to take back that 1 gb and give a 2 gb module..
I also learnt about it only during my purchase. But most of my spec was not customisable as it was an offer during the chinese festival there...so i 99 percent of it i bought as it is. except for the screen size..battery and bag. and I bargained the 3 year support.
The tax here is way too high man.. Thats where most of the buyers get hit big time.. In malaysia there is absolutely no tax on computer components. This is to promote people to buy IT products...etc.
I wish the politicians here see it like that here...It will improve the competition and thus quality and choice for us the end users. -
I think it is better to talk directly to Malaysia regarding this ,but Im still not sure .
As soon as you get your laptop under "device manager" look at your monitor ,if it says something like LPLD... then you have an LG one .
You'll most probably get an LG screen at 1440x900 resolution .
Best of Luck . -
Dear Hsbrar,
I dont think I will be receiving it today..There is some confusion on the Dell end..The concerned CCR talked to me and said there is some issue with the software which updates the system status etc.. any she insists that my notebook was invoiced which means was sent out to blue dart.
That is supposed to have happened on 18th. She says there maybe a delay in the blue dart service..I was like HUH!!! now she has given me 24th as the date or before. AIYOOOOOH!!!!
Then reassured me tmrw...I called my town Blue Dart guys ...They said even today they received 2 systems from Dell...And said there is no chance for blue dart to delay..SIGH!!! He said he doesnt think the factory would have released the laptop in the first place..and he suggest thats why the factory has not even given the way bill..Kinda Makes Sense too...
Well looks like shortage of parts has delayed many orders..
Hsbar do you think i ought to except their offer to send me a technician to set up the system for me...I really dont need that fellow..
It seems he will check if any part is missing etc. I feel like saying no...i dont wanna him to go all beserk with my system.
VERY IMPORTANT.... DO YOU HAVE A SIM SLOT PRESENT WHEN YOU REMOVE YOUR BATTERY..
my current system does as we can use it for umts 3g broadband service etc..Only thing needed is a umts card that is placed in one of the 2 empty slots next to the wifi card. right beneath the touch pad..
Do check and let me know please.
Thanks a Zillion.. -
Check what is the brand of your hard drive...if its hitachi it could be posing lots of noise as well as heat.. Mine at the moment is samsung. and yeah 99 percent sure mine is LG...JUst keeping my finger crossed so that it doesnt have scratches or dead pixels..hehehehe....
Everyone pray for me..its gonna be a month since i am dealing with this replacement issue..phew..Buying time its like skiing down the alps...Replacing time its like climbing mount everest...hahahha -
I had ordered my xps on the 10th and recieved it last Saturday 19th. I was also told about the shortage of parts but that seems to have been taken care of by Dell.
Also, Customs in Chennai was closed last Friday regarding Mahavir Jayanti. -
I dont think there is any need to let anyone install the XPS 1530 .There is nothing to install.Although Dell does take quite a sum of money for initial installation by an engineer I personally feel it is better to stay away from them unless there is some serious problem in the laptop especially in case of XPS .Dell doesn't have their own trained engineers instead they colaborate with companies like Wipro for tech services so it's better to keep them away from your XPS and not let them fiddle around with your system .
As regards checking that all accessories are there, you can do it yourself and report immediately if any of them is missing.
Dont worry even I did the same ie changed my order atleast twice after placing my initial order .The very first order was placed on 7th March,2008.
I changed the resolution of the laptop twice by phone ,hence there was a delay in the order .But it is better to delay the order than to get something one does not desire .I think we should accept our own fault first .
However ,once the order was confirmed on 24th March.2008 I was given delivery date as 15th April,2008 whereas the system arrived on 1st April,2008 itself .
So once the order is placed it should not be changed later .
As regards HDD it has an interesting number WDC WD2500BEVS-75UST0 .I've heard such a number for the first time .God knows which company this is .It doesn't look like Hitachi,Samsung etc .
Does any one have any idea ?Incidentally I opted for 250 GB HDD .
Is there anyway to find even a single dead pixel on the laptop screen except for physical examination like some software or something ?
Is there any site on the net which gives full info on the system's performance ?
Keep in touch.
Regards.

Dear H.s brar
VERY IMPORTANT.... DO YOU HAVE A SIM SLOT PRESENT WHEN YOU REMOVE YOUR BATTERY.. its near the left side hinge..You can only access it with the battery removed.
my current system does as we can use it for umts 3g broadband service etc..Only thing needed is a umts card that is placed in one of the 2 empty slots next to the wifi card. right beneath the touch pad..
Do check and let me know please....
Oh yeah the drive you have is a Western Digital Drive. Its very popular in India...and abroad too.. Main Hard drives now days are the Seagate, Western Digital, Samsung.
And I think the western digital factory is present here in India. Dell is all about logistics... -
Dear Vads24,
Actually I did read the SIM question earlier also .
But the thing is I dont feel like fiddling around with the new XPS 1530 unless Im very sure what Im doing .
You do one thing ,when you receieve your system you have a look at it and then give me step by step instructions on how to find this SIM slot .
But I do hope it's there .I know in USA,Canada etc they do have this SIM slot which I think is integrated with verizon or sprint etc,if Im not mistaken .But since 3G has not hit India yet I think at the most the XPS 1530 supplied here will have a dummy SIM slot .
By the way even if the SIM slot is not there I have a an N70 mobile and I think this mobile should work as a 3G modem.
At the same time Im sure there is a 6 in 1 card reader in the front .But I found my N70 MMC card is much smaller than the card reader slot .I wonder how it will fit in the slot !
Regards,
H.S.Brar -
The card reader you have shud be a 8 in 1 card reader. the Sim card slot shud be present and its not a dummy actually...I have mine in my current system...all you need to do is actually mini card from the relevant wireless company or a universal one.
