I ordered a Dell Vostro 1700 On the 13th of February and it has been in pre-production since this date, the spec is as follows:

    V1700 CORE 2 DUO T7500 2.20GHz,800,4M
    3072 MB 667 MHz Dual-Channel DDR2 SDRAM (1x1024 MB + 1x2048)
256 MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

and pretty much all the basics other than that.

I am becoming increasingly concerned that it is not going past the pre-production stage as it has been 12 days already, and the estimated delivery date is the 03/03/08. This is rather close now and still no progress.

there was an initial problem with the online delivery i placed on the 5th which after 8 days told me had been cancelled for no apparent reason. I ordered again after speaking to a gentleman on the phone. The reason for purchasing is that my previous laptop broke down and died, something i had foreseen for a short period but thought it would be able to hold out another few months, aparently not. And so this new laptop although not urgent is important to me, as the alternative i am using is at least 5 years old now.

I fear i will not receive the laptop by the delivery date unless something happens fast, and the prospect of waiting even longer is rather unpleasant.

does anybody have any advice or tips about pre-production, it's length or why my laptop could be taking so long? and if anybody beleives i will actualy receive the laptop in time for next monday?

i posted this earlier but i realise in the wrong section :S

    any help appritiated.

Dell Inspiron 1520 2.2 Ghz 4MB C, 2GB RAM, 128 MB Nvidia, 1440x900 15.4", 3 years Complete Cover, 9 cell battery, Win XP professional and other config at default

I ordered an Inspiron 1520 notebook on 23rd Jan. Getting assurance that it will be delivered in 15-18 days. But on delivery status the estimated date of delivery was 18th Feb. Whreas the order left the Malaysia on 29th. Adding to that they changed the date firstly 25th feb. and after 28 they say 10th march. 47 days for delivery of a notebook! SHOCKING  . Dell Customer care is not ready to take any responsibility for delay. No body at DELL has full information. Customer care say that it will be delivered by 1st March but sales rep. says 10th march. I really don't know what is happening.

I want to change my notebook to XPS 1530, because I paid Rs. 66,685 now same config XPS is available for around 68,000 earlier it was for 75,000.

Can anyone advice how to deal with dell.

Thanks for the reply Vishal. But they are not answering my mail. I mailed executive who booked my order and his manager and customer care also. But no reply since yesterday. They said earlier that my order is in transit and will be delivered by weekend i.e. 1st or 2nd march. My form-17 which I sent for delivery in Uttaranchal has also expired on 20th Feb. Without the form they cannot send it. I asked about this also but no response. Phone lines are busy as usual.

I have an ooold Inspiron 9300, bought in '05. It's been a great system so far. I had the mobo replaced under warranty since there was a well-known problem with the headphone jack having lose connections during the initial production units. I was aware of this issue before buying the system, so I don't actually count it as a problem at all.

Now, though, the LCD (after having taken plenty of abuse) has given up on me. The lower one-third is completely grey. Only if I push it on the lower left side and keep it so does the greyed-out area become visible. It's time for a new notebook for me, but unfortunately I really don't think the current price for any Dell notebook sold in India is reasonable when you look at the price of the same system in the US. The prices are currently absurd and more so because they are for hardware that is currently at least two to three generations old. If I could have my way I would only buy a system from the US and get it here. The only problem with that is that apart from Dell, HP, Lenovo and Apple all other notebook vendors don't have support in India.

    @vishalbhatia

The next time you manage to get through to customer care, ask to speak to a supervisor as soon as you're through with listening to the standard opening line of the CC rep. Tell him/her that you will only discuss the issue with the supervisor since no CC rep has been able to help you yet. Tell them about the issue briefly, but keep insisting on speaking to a supervisor till one comes on-line. Tell the supervisor that:

    1. You want the order cancelled since it has taken far too long for delivery and the price you bought it for is currently not justified as you can get a better system for roughly the same amount of money.

    2. If the fellow doesn't yield, tell him/her that you're going to consumer court and sue Dell for harassment and unlawful withholding of your money (I hope you have the system invoice e-mail.)

By the way, I had a conversation with a Dell rep a few days ago to discuss a new notebook for purchase and I clearly told him that I felt their products were grossly overpriced in India. He tried to give me some weird reasons for that thinking that I probably would fall for them. However that wasn't the case and I could clearly tell that he had absolutely no clue about prices overseas. Anyway, he happened to mention to me that the production facilities for the Inspiron 1520 (and probably other Inspiron models too) had been shifted to Chennai instead of Malaysia. If that is correct then it is absolutely outrageous that Dell has taken so long to deliver systems.

    Hello Friends,

I just heard day before yesterday that Dell XPS 1530 and Dell XPS 1330 and some other models are now being shipped from Chennai instead of Malaysia ..

Not only this Dell is atlast entering the retail market soon.

2 days back I was sitting in a computer shop in Chandigarh where I met the Dell Regional Sales Manager who helped me configure the Dell XPS 1530 online and gave me the above info.

He talked to direct to Dell to confirm this .

I hope I'll also receive my XPS 1530 sooner than later.

Ordered my Dell Inspiron 1720 today; estimated delivery date 3/10/2008. D: Almost a month... I chose the 3-5 business days option, but seriously. I'm going to have a heart attack of the anxiety of waiting, and this is barely my first day. D:

I have ordered inspiron 1420 yesterday, sales rep. said i would receive it within 7-10 working days.(by end on next week), he also said they have now factory in chennai which is now fully functional from february 08 end, and my notebook will come from chennai factory, earlier when delivery was from malasia it was taking around 3 weeks to deliver. (most of time goes in custom clearnance) , from cheenai factory also notebook has to go from custom clearance but that is done at factory level only and dell has dedicated persons for that, so it takes much less time.
now i hope everything will go smooth as he said and i get my inspiron 1420 as soon as possible.... :)

I am located in Navi Mumbai. From chennai notebook will go to their hub in Mumbai and then to me. I dont think there will be any transit delay for Navi Mumbai, once notebook left chennai factory.
But I am not able to track my order online. Dell said it takes 3-4 days to track the order online.

After some quotation changes because of the Samsung(so called grainy) vs LG screens .I finally gave my XPS 1530 order mentioning the M809C screen on 20th March,2008 and it got confirmed today ie 24th March,2008.

The estimated arrival date they gave me was 15th April,2008

I then asked them is it coming from "Malaysia" they said no it will be shipped from Chennai and that too via Air Mail to Gurgaon .

Now what special is going to happen in between(so many) days I dont know .Is it going to lie at customs for 15 days

Has anyone else received a Dell XPS 1530 from Chennai to Chandigarh ?

If so,please share your experiences .

    Thanks .

PS : The online order status has not started showing yet instead a red error message is shown.

Dell Laptop's is not manufactured in Chennai. it is manufactured in chennai is what dell Sales executive states. in fact it is manufactured in Malaysia and shipped within 24hrs from dell malaysia to Dell factory in chennai once a tracking number is issued. from Chennai it is sent using logistics partners like Professional or Fedex

My order was confirmed on 24 March,2008.

Since last 2-3 my order status is showing "ship from factory".Does this mean ship from Malaysia or Chennai factory ?

Secondly,When I made my order "Penryn" processors were not available for XPS 1530.

Today Penryn processors are available for XPS 1530 now.

I had placed the order through a Dell dealer with a Dell regional manager who was sitting in the showroom. The cash payment was made by me but the dealer used his credit card for payment.

Now I have the following remedies:

1)To let the system reach at my location and then upgrade the processor from T7500 to any Penryn processor .Is this allowed at Dell.

2)To return the system within 30 days and re order with Penryn. After returning Dell laptops within 30 days how many days does Dell refund the money ?

Please suggest what I should do ?

    Thanks .

The second option is the only way you can get the processor upgraded. The money takes a maximum of two weeks to be credited to your a/c. I believe they deduct the handling charges...

And the factory refers to the Malaysia factory.

Not to worry, some how at least when my laptop was delivered the status page still stood at shipped from the factory i guess it s because it was shipped out of Malaysia even after it was delivered to me. and as for returning it, i don't think its practical cos the tax you paid isn't refundable as far a i know, so you are taking a hit on about what 5K?

As for ordering i'd be carefull as In India i have noticed most so called shops which stock dell usually buy about 100 laptops or 150 laptops at a bulk stock config and sell it at a much cheaper price. but you end up with a laptop bought on a company account in your name.that because dell offers higher than 8% discount while buying corporate it seems. At the end of the day you are stuck with a ownership transfer form

I placed my order on 13th March and received my inspiron 1420 on 24th March. (24th was the expected delivery date). I got mine in time. laptop has been mfgd in chennai as the sticker behind shows "made in india". as far as online order tracking system concerns, its not so reliable and not regularly updated. so better call dell customer service and ask for the details.
i am happy with dell as he kept his promises.

    Hi All,
Ordered my M1530 on Thursday, 3/04/2008. Expecting a delivery Friday this week. Ordered through on of my friends who works in Dell.

So he told me that Dell products are INDEED being manufactured in Chennai, in a plant setup in an SEZ, specifically designed for exports. So whatever raw-material comes to that SEZ and whatever finished goods leaves that SEZ for other contries, DOES NOT have to be reported to Customs. But if the finished goods has to come to India, it HAS TO clear customs.

So most of the Dell products are being manufactured (or rather, assembled...) in India, and still they have to clear customs, if to be delivered in India.

    @vinumsv
Hi, Seen your siggy, you have a 1440x900 LG in your M1530, can you tell me the part no. from your service tag or invoice.
The part no. in my order for the same resolution screen is stated as M809C, and I don't know what panel i'll get. Googling for the part gives around 8 links which say that it'll be an LG but just wanted to make sure. So whats your part no.?

    Hi All,

My order got confirmed on 24/03/2008,got it delivered on 02/04/2008 .

I changed my screen resolution from 1680x1050 to 1440x900 after seeing not very favourable reviews about the Samsung 1680x1050 .

Monitor has hardware id MONITOR/LPLDF00 and Im quite sure it is also a LG 1440x900 screen :)

    Hi all,

I ordered Inspiron 1520 on 28th Jan. (Price Rs. 66685/-) At that time all orders were shipping from Malaysia. It got stuck in customs. It was not delivered even in 45 days. I canceled my order and asked dell for refund.

After getting confirmation that now orders are made in India and it will be delivered on time. Next I ordered XPS M1530. Next order placement took some time 20 days (ordered on 28th March), I got my notebook delivered on 8th April.

I got XPS M1530 T9300 2.5 GHz (6MB Cache), 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 128 MB Nvidia Graphics Card, 1440x900 TFT True Life Display, Vista Home Premium, Tuxedo Black, DVD RW, Fingerprint Reader, 9Cell Battery, Noise Isolation Earbuds. Dell Nylon Backpack, 3 years complete cover, Accidental damage protection, rest all at normal config.

I did not asked for any discount but I got my XPS 1530 at no extra cost. The price difference was approximately 25,000.

I would like to thank NBR members for giving me suggestions in this issue. :) :) :)

I ordered my XPS on 10th April.
Order Confirmed and released for manufacturing on 10th itself.
Dell website showed EDD as 15th!!

Now on 15th the EDD is 21st. I called up Dell, they say that they are facing a shortage of parts so the system is still being manufactured.

Anyone else facing the same issue?

The CSR also told that after the system is completed, it is released for Customs clearance. That takes 2 to 3 days. Then it is shipped. Again there is a state holiday for Mahabir Jayanti, so Customs is not working that day.

Conclusion: I don't know when I will get the system - Bad.
Dell facing a shortage of parts - That's really bad.

    @akshay2386
My status is showing as "Shipped From Factory". That was yesterday.
Today a Dell CSR called up and informed that the package has reached customs. Today is a government holiday in chennai so no customs clearence today. It could happen tomorrow or Monday (It generally takes 2 to 3 days).
He said that there could be a further delay of 1 day. So 21/22 it is at best. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Meanwhile a person from Delhi called up to ask if I needed help for installation. Man, I have not even recieved it yet - they just don't have any co-ordination. He said that he will call up next after I recieve the system.

The factory is located in a SEZ in Chennai. Since Dell is a Foreign Manufacturer, so a Custom Clearence is required [That's what the CSR told, I have absolutely no idea about these rules]. Wierd rule though.

Good news about your status. :) Mine is still in "Ship From Factory"
